Let's just hope that all the stupidity of this invasion was due to fifth service not believing that there would be invasion so pocketing all the money that was supposed to go to fund Anti-Ukrainian Resistance and misinforming Putin of how great their achievements were. There is a strict definition of "co-belligerent nation" in international law. You have to have soldiers on the ground in the uniform of the co-belligerent nation. That would be the case if the Belarus military entered Ukraine. Providing intelligence is not a part of co-belligerence. A country at war is allowed to buy weapons for its defense. That is why it officially is a "lend/lease". Whoever provides those weapons is not a co-belligerent either.

3:20 Both Russia and China sent advanced weapons directly to Vietnam during the 1960s-1970s. Russia also provided intelligence and early warning on B52 raids flying from Guam causing the loss of many aircraft. So I guess this is just a case of reap what you sow. It would also be difficult for Russia to explain why they are shooting down an aircraft from a technically non-belligerent nation in international airspace or the airspace of another country. If the US aircraft drifted into Russian airspace, that would be a different matter. Also, Russia has a really bad track record of shooting down civilian aircraft, like KAL007 in 1983 or MH17 over Ukraine in 2014. What if Russia fired an S400 and it locked onto a passenger or cargo plane instead of the US military aircraft. Imagine the repercussions for Russia. Things are bad enough on the international stage, and I doubt they want to make things worse.

Also its likely such "allied" or Ukrainian logistical aircraft up until they fly over the "contested" airspace border are escorted by stealth fighters. Does Russia risk losing even more aircraft and experienced pilots especially when already paranoid they'll come under air attack themselves? Are the air routes jamming radar by allies so the Russians don't even know where to hunt for them? However from the occasion air raid from Ukrainian forces its actually not paranoia on Russia to save your better assets for when you need it.

It was originally developed by Texas Instruments as a replacement for the AGM-45 Shrike and AGM-78 Standard ARM system. Production was later taken over by Raytheon Corporation when it purchased the defense production business of Texas Instruments.

While Russian aircraft are often quite good (Indian pilots flying Su-30s against American Super Hornets gave the Americans a run for their money. Russia has a fraction of the strength that they claim. This absolutely includes their nukes, too. They can't fight the US directly in conventional warfare because if things escalate they maybe have 1/10th of the arsenal that they claim to, and those missiles are so old and poorly maintained that they aren't sure that they'd actually reach their targets. The invasion of Ukraine was supposed to prove their Army isn't falling apart and considering that Ukraine has one of the weakest armies in Europe it has been an absolute failure. Russia literally can't afford to attack a US plane.

It's impossible to know for sure but within a few years Russia could have ZERO operational warheads due to radioactive decay. The warheads have to be cleaned up and decay byproducts removed periodically and it is VERY expensive. Supposedly the plant that services warheads closed in the 2000's.

@@jgray7970 I might have been exagerating a bit, but the Russians do currently have a huge missile problem. The R-36 is an ICBM that can carry 10 nuclear warheads and Russia themselves set a goal decommission all of them by the end of 2019, they didn't. Its successor, the RS-28 has only just begun manufacturing this year. That one obsolete system has left upwards of 1/3 of Russian nukes stranded on top of missiles they know they can't safely fire. That's just one of their obsolete platforms. The RS-26 was another new missile system that was designed and in 2018 they scrapped the project because it was a failure and probably illegal. The RS-24 is a capable missile recently developed, but they can only build around 20 a year right now. An incredibly large portion of their nukes are strapped to missiles that are potentially more dangerous to Russia itself than they are to any would be target, and the Russian government is very well aware of this fact.

From what I understand, NATO jets are operating within NATO airspace though. No they won't do that. Their MO is different. If this were China yes they would engage probably. China has much less fear of US reprisals for what ever reason. Could be they are over confident, or it could be they are well aware the US military would never actually invade China directly, or it could be their military tech and organization is better than people think. It is hard to tell. China has considered seriously sinking a US carrier and seem pretty confident they would not fail. Russia's main focus over the years has been aircraft and anti-aircraft systems. The war they are currently in could benefit from air operations but it is becoming clear that the Russian pilots and command are afraid of the integrated air defenses Ukraine built over the last 20 years. In that sense this is not a fight of say the US into Iraq. There the US air force can just blitz the air defense networks and airbases over night and pretty much win. The Ukraine has much more sophisticated air defenses that are mostly Russian made designed to be very mobile and layered. It is a case of the Russians respecting their own hardware. Remember that in the Serbian conflict 3 mobile launchers that the Serbs had were a nightmare for the US and EU forces to deal with and probably bagged a F-117 at the time as well as a few other aircraft and we only neutralized one of them. Russia would be heading into a whole defense network made up of mobile launchers and gun systems backed by Mig-29's and with long range intel provided by the US and EU. The result is probably keeping both sides aircraft well back from the front lines... Ukrainian aircraft don't seem to get close to the Russian border either. No one wants to test the other sides air defenses. The Ukraine is not Afghanistan or Iraq or Syria. It is closer in power to many EU countries and probably somewhat less strong than say Turkey. This conflict does not look like previous conflicts at all.

Yes even Germany in WW2 was dependent on many horses. So Russia could retreat within the interior and allow the lack of logistics to aid it. With widespread road transport, supply aircraft and long range missiles distance is not the issue it once was. Also Europe has over 3 times the population and 10 times the GDP so the supply side this time is heavily against Russia. The Soviet Union ceased to exist, but their armed forces, the people directing them, and their nuclear warheads did not. They are still there. A direct armed conflict between the U.S. and Russia invites escalation to a "nuclear exchange"- which means that our two countries (and most likely Europe) would cease to exist as we know them.

This is but a snippet of what occurred in the Vietnam War. Throughout the war, Moscow provided Hanoi with 95 S-75 air defense missile systems, over 500 airplanes, 120 helicopters, more than 5,000 anti-aircraft guns, and 2,000 tanks. In addition, more than 10,000 Soviet military specialists were dispatched to Vietnam: from missile crews, pilots, and signalmen to tank crews and doctors. “U.S. and others providing intelligence on Russian forces to Ukraine. Reconnaissance, intelligence collections…” Intelligence collected by aircraft…could be viewed as an act of war to Russia, and it’s not entirely difficult to imagine how “they” could justify shooting down these aircrafts directly assisting Ukraine as just self-defense. Your comparison of the U.S. aiding Ukraine to Vietnam is woefully imbalanced, Throughout Vietnam received both the then Soviet Union and China “MILITARY” assistance including military advisors as well as on the battlefield military and technical advisors. There “ARE” documented instances where the “Soviet” and “Chinese” were on hand during the “interrogations” of captured “American” soldiers. Do not forget the downing of American aircraft: fighters, reconnaissance aircraft, bombers fighters, and the B-52s were and in some instances were done so by Soviets in Vietnam. So, NO, your analogy is BADLY flawed, and inaccurately equating the Vietnam and Ukraine “war”. Let’s call a war for what it “is” a war. The Russian/Soviet analogy could not justify Putin's declaration of "war" to Russia. This FAILS EVERY LOGICAL ARGUEMENTS.

Russia and China were overtly sending high tech weapon systems to one side of the war that the US was involved in.. Are we forgetting the Vietnam War? USSR sent hundreds of the most capable SAM systems to North Vietnam military, the famous SA-2 Dvina. These missiles took down numerous US aircraft and cost us many lives. We knew this was happening and we were able to stop it by bombing and sinking the ships that delivered weapons in Haiphong harbor. But LBJ never wanted to touch those ships, fearing it would escalate the war and bring in the Soviets. And Russians today are in a much worse situation than we ever were during Vietnam War. First they can't target or destroy most of the equipment coming into Ukraine. US military knew every ship that brought Soviet weapons to Vietnam and choose not to attack. Also Russians are in an abysmal situation regarding the economy and a completely failed invasion, so they are practically incapable to do anything. US Navy ships of the coast of Vietnam could have sunk those ships whenever they wanted, all they needed was a political decision to do that. LBJ and McNamarra were heavily criticized for not allowing the military to hit the Soviet ships..
@barrettjet
@barrettjet 2 жыл бұрын
The Vietnam war could have been won in short order if LBJ had gotten his nose out. Look at what happened with operation "Linebacker". We could have flattened Hanoi and sunk every ship in Haiphong harbor. Then cut all the rail lines. They would have quit quickly if we had turned our military loose.

@@somebody700 It’s a failure as far as Russia’s original objective to topple the government and set up a puppet state in addition to taking the southeast. And the war is a long way from over. It may be a total failure in the end. 1. This is why Russia’s failures are all the more embarrassing. Despite the Vietnam jungles, the US never lost a major battle there. Can’t say the same for Russia. 2. Speaking Russian doesn’t make one “Russian.” That whole justification is no different than the one Hitler used in 1937-39. And many of the ethnic Russians in southeast Ukraine now hate Russia, or at least its government, due to the murder of thousands of civilians by Russian forces. Many will absolutely fight against Russia (and already are). 3. Russia can’t even take the entire south, and any attempt to annex what they have won’t be recognized by any country that matters (no, Iran, Syria, North Korea, and Belarus don’t matter). China won’t because it doesn’t want to get hit with sanctions. India won’t because it wants closer ties with the west. 4. *Currently occupies.*. I wouldn’t count on that lasting forever. Even if it did, the Western companies that Russia relies on to actually drill and supply machinery won’t touch that territory. There is a legal technicality that no one ever mentions. Supplying weapons to a belligerent nation during a war is an act of war. Supplying weapons to a nation that is defending itself against an invasion when war has not been declared is not. When Russia declared that they were conducting a special military operation and not a war, this was under international law the green light for any nation that wanted to, to send supplies to and aid Ukraine in defending itself without it being an act of war. Given that there is not a declaration of war, if a cargo plane belonging to a NATO member was attacked in Ukraine, Article 5 could be invoked. Of course the problem remains, do we really want to go nuclear over this. If we do I'm kind of glad that I got to get old before it happened.

I am amazed that no one seems to study brinkmanship during a proxy war anymore, because the Ukraine conflict has become a classic proxy war. If anything, the fact that the Russians have, despite their rhetoric, scrupulously avoided sending so much as an errant bullet near a NATO country, and vice-versa, NATO countries have scrupulously avoided *directly* touching anything Russian, is a sign that both sides understand this. Right now Russia is playing against the Ukrainian forces with a handicap. If they down a NATO asset, that changes, and everyone loses. So, for now, it's Russia vs Ukraine (+ western weapons and intel), and we should pray it stays that way. For those referencing Vietnam, where the US was on the other side, you would be correct. US doctrine held that obviously Soviet assets weren't to be touched, much to the dismay of the US military. I had a good friend at a previous job that described watching Soviet dredge ships clear channels through the Vietnamese rivers to allow for resupply, and how taking out that dredge would have disabled a significant portion of the NVA, but that they were never allowed to do anything more than watch it while they drank coffee. Why? Because taking out that dredge would have turned Vietnam from a proxy war to a direct confrontation with a peer nation.

How in the world could it be a proxy war when one of the sides is directly involved? You could argue that a proxy war started in 2014 given the "separatist" forces... but even then it's a bit of a reach and totally irrelevant since the Russian military proper got involved.
@maurvir3197
@maurvir3197 2 жыл бұрын
@@PhysicsGamer You are correct - it did start in 2014. After the annexation of Crimea, several NATO countries started offering training to the Ukrainian military, and to their credit, they accepted the lessons. However, the fact that Russia is directly engaged doesn't change the fact that it is a proxy war. NATO isn't bolstering Ukraine purely for humanitarian reasons, but rather they want to wear Russia's military down to a nub before they consider trying their luck in a NATO country. It's not that different from what the US did in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion, or that the Soviets did to the US in Vietnam.

Not quite. Soviet received Cobra fighters from the US. But We all should show some respect to both western and Soviet and other soldiers, who fought and won. The engagement from all helped to shorten the war. At that time the questions could be if the Soviet would enter if the German troops had not invaded Them. Daring the ask the easiest questions, with multiple very reasonable answers. That said, the video does actually cover the topic quite well. However I’d argue that not mentioning the Ukrainian intelligence gathering is subtly downplaying their own efforts: For example the movement of Russias fleet was rather well covered by open intelligence alone, meaning Ukraine probably didn’t need the help of US to target ships - that capability can be safely assumed just by observing what weapon systems they had. Similarly Russian troops are using Ukrainian 4G/LTE network for both their on-duty and off-duty communications. Identifying and tracking devices is quite literally build into the system. Similarly basic triangulation of radio-signals is practically speaking given. This means that Ukraine would have, depending on usecase, general to very accurate information about position ans movement of Russian positions - through entirely civilian means, such as telecom providers, radio-amateurs and global open intelligence community. No doubt USA and NATO do provide them important intelligence, but they are in no way the ‘eyes’ of Ukrainian military. They can see just fine.

Yeah people underestimate Ukraine. Like they talk about how Ukraine sunk the advanced Russian flagship the Moskva. They fail to realize the Moskva was built in Ukraine by Ukrainians along with more then half of Russia's navy. The Ukrainian Naval shipyard was mentioned by Putin by name when he gave his invasion speech and I suspect taking it is one of his objectives. Hardware wise they don't have anywhere near the capacity of intelligence gathering as the U.S but they do have a large and well developed intelligence organization with a lot of boots on the ground. Ukraine isn't some under developed third world country. Their tech is on par with Russia, in some cases better and some worse. They just have much less of it.

Takes more than knowing where the ship is to successfully hit it. Russian troops were using local networks but have greatly curtailed such use. (Part of why their collapses are so massive when they happen - all command and control is lost so no one knows where to reset lines in retreat). On the flip side, Ukraine has developed an extensive drone surveillance capability and with the home field advantage knows how to best deploy it. Added to that human intelligence assets because, invaded or not, many remain loyal to Ukraine and not Russia in occupied areas. But there have been several Ukrainian military actions thus far that make it fairly clear the exact type of help they are getting, perhaps not consistently, but when needed to make a splash.

I don't think that was his intention personally. I do however think he thought Nato wouldn't be as united as its proving to be. And certainly didn't reckon on finland and Sweden joining the gang. He says he wanted nato off his doorstep. An organisation that was actually winding down considerably in force since the end of the cold War (1990 onward. Albeit there is a rise supposedly to meet China and the emerging Russia threats). But his actions have only served to bolster the resolve and spending of nato members. Epic backfire
