Why Russian Air Defense Fails Against Ukrainian Drones

Russia possesses one of, if not the most extensive collections of air defense systems globally, along with a seemingly limitless supply of missiles to sustain them. For example, they introduced newer SAMs like the S-300 in the 70s, ultra-fast systems like the Tor in the 80s for countering low-flying cruise missiles, and, more recently, they have focused on systems like the S-400 and highly capable radars to detect stealth aircraft. Despite Russia's extensive world-class air defense systems, questions arise about why we see frequent reports of Ukrainian drones striking targets in Moscow and Crimea. Are Ukraine’s military drones a dangerous threat? Is Russian air defense truly exceptional, or does it fall short of its reputation when put to the test in actual combat scenarios? Or is there another reality that lies in between?

Well, everything is simple and everything is complicated. This is war. And in war there is often confusion when it is not clear where the direction of the attacking forces is and where the rear is. In Operation Desert Storm, the United States and Great Britain led to such confusion leading to friendly fire, when American and British aircraft attacked their own allied forces, thinking that the enemy was there. Mistakes by commanding officers also happen in war. It happens.

All defenses fail against drones whether NATO, Russia or China. Too small, too cheap, too many. A defensive measure by any nation does not exist. Perhaps small suicide drones designed to sense RF and hone in? That's the truth. While Ukraine takes out Russian submarines, warships, black sea fleet headquarters, Russian TU-22 bombers, Predel-E over the horizon radar systems, S400 systems,. The Russians are employing Soviet derived modernized designs which are rather good for what they were designed for. They are not that useful anymore, but that is because this war introduced the massive use of UAVs which mostly no one had accounted for, on any side. It is a new war scenario. It will take a while for most nations to deliver effective counter UAV military hardware and their accompanying tactics.

Well compared with US SAMs Russians are way better with about 95% success ratio. About US SAMs success ratio ask Saudi Arabia and their oil rigs :)

Uhm. No. Russias combined systems are showing a less than 70% success ratio. Patriots aren't designed to hit low flying threats. They are an ABM missiles system first and foremost. Still the Patriots H2K system is superior to anything the Russians have. Russia, has just never been able to get it right. 🤣

Because Ukraine launches 20 drones into an area protected by a Russian air defense system that has less than 20 missiles. So of course some drones will pass by Sometimes the Ukrainians attack with more than 35 drones on one Russian air defense zone.
