I think an important aspect that is not noted by the lyrics here 3:03 is that they have a polyvalence of meanings - they use German words, which can have multiple meanings depending on the context without giving you the context. In other words, they mean all the meanings at once and perhaps none of the meaning at once - because they are "plastic words" in the Pörksenian sense (Penn State University Press, 2004). If you ignore German orthography, and merely focus on phonemes - Rammstein uses words that sound like other words (homophones) - "Du hast mich" could also be "Du haßt mich," They also do a lot of play on words, use metaphors and idioms. That is their genius. A lot gets lost in translation, which makes their lyrics appear simplistic when they really are extremely complex.

The way he sings "Du hast" sounds like you'd say "Du hasst"(you hate) in german, especially with this aggression. For as long as he just repeats "Du hast mich" (You hate me), the meaning really hangs in the balance. It is only once he gets to "Du hast mich gefragt" that it becomes clear.(You have asked me) Set's the mood, to say the least.

From the German point of view it's also really interesting that the thing I like the most about Rammstein is completely lost on international audiences: their lyrics. Aside from Till sounding really fantastic, he's also a really talented poet (he actually even published poetry over the years). The themes and stories are really interesting, mature, well told and offer some really great insight into the human condition. They are often told from the perspective of some interesting, complex and sometimes deranged character, which is a fact that often gets overlooked by critics: the lyrics are not from the point of view of Rammstein or Till, but from a character. And as a fan of literature I can't help but notice the influence of classic German literature and poetry. A lot of the lyrics are really similar in style and rhyme scheme to German poets like Goethe or Schiller (they even referenced some classic works in their songs, e.g. Roter Sand references Effi Briest, Haifisch references Brecht, Dalai Lama references Goethe). If you took certain Rammstein lyrics, mixed them up with poems by aforementioned poets and asked someone to determine which were written by whom, I guarantee you that he would be completely unable to do so consistently. I really like that Rammstein is so popular outside of Germany and they have a lot of qualities to justify that, but it's a bit of a shame that Till's poetry gets lost in translation.
@Volvith5 жыл бұрын
I swear to god, i was looking for your comment. It's a shame that too little people actually care to look into the more poetic context and meaning of their songs. Cheers from Swamp-Germany (more commonly known as the Netherlands)! :D

Honestly, it's not the language that sounds metal, it's the way the language is spoken. If you yelled "butterfly", it would sound intimidating to a foreigner just as much as schmetterling. Try saying schmetterling like you would say butterfly, it's just as gentle.
@ZenoDovahkiin5 жыл бұрын
True. If I yelled *"BUTTERFLY!"* at an american, it would be more weird and maybe amusing to them, but only because they understand what butterfly means, and the meaning of the word is what infuses the situation with irony and thus makes it funny. I could probably intimidate somebody who doesn't understand English that way. Or, if you aggressively yelled "mariposa" at an English speaker, they'd likely be intimidated, too, not because mariposa as a word is harsh, but because a stranger is aggressively yelling at them in Spanish.

I would add "lyrics" to the list, since the lyrics why seemingly straight forward at times always have like a greater depth to them really. There is so much irony, hidden imagery and subtle social and political criticism to it while depicting the obscene nature and conflict of the human mind, at times sheer brutality on the outside but the deeper meaning makes them relatable and personal, showing in merciless "in your face" way that we have a part in that grotesque nature. But then I realized based on how many fans word wide probably never understood a word of that Till sings, the lyrics are probably not the reason Rammstein is popular, even though they might be very important to a more involved audience.
@shughume3 жыл бұрын
I agree. And I worry that it comes across as slightly "snobbish" or "Oh, you don't understand the deeper level maaaaan" but you are absolutely correct. And I think, unfortunately, the dude that is narrating this video is one of the people that doesn't actually really get it. Take their most "popular" song... I bet there's millions of people who would say Du Hast is their favourite song, yet aren't able at all to articulate what it's actually about, and that's a shame.

How is the concentration camp scene controversial I still dont understand. Song and music video are about history of Germany and about how Till and Rammstein love their country but the country has dark history, made serious things - mistakes in the past, its about mixed feelings. So are so many talented musicians that never get a fraction of the recognition that rammstein has so I disagree. They're just that perfect level of heavy for most people where there's distortion and it baarely touches the label "heavy" but in an extremely safe, poppy and inoffensive way, relying on imagery instead to offend just like manson. Their riffs are beyond basic and accessible, not that they should be nonstop shredding but I don't think I've ever heard their guitar player play a 16th note. Ever. Their drums melt into the background instantly they're so boring, and their singer is good but in a classicly trained way which isn't that appealing to me. They were cool when i was 12 but they're a yawn fest now.
@nellevw29505 жыл бұрын
Selling Soul 5 Bucks it’s your opinion man, but you definitely can’t say that they don’t have talent, at least in art and stage presence... They are known worldwide for their creativity, heavy music, poetic lyrics (most of the time), but as some members said before, they can totally work without provoking
@incongruous45 жыл бұрын
@@nellevw2950 I never said they wern't talented. Just that they didn't get big off raw talent because there are plenty of other talented and arguably more talented artists who never get exposure. Stage presence is nice but I have no interest in seeing them so it's not a factor, just their music itself. Their shows do look cool though but again, nothing to do with their composition skills. They aren't even that heavy anyways. I guess if all you listen to is billboard top 100 they seem heavy. They were heavy back when the only rock bands I knew were 3 days grace, slipknot, linkin park etc but these days I'm more into technical death metal, slamming bdm and some math/prog rock so it feels like they aren't heavy anymore and what they write is suuuper basic. All they have is pyrotechnics and a good clean singer, every other band member sucks at what they do. Oh and they seem to be way better directors than musicians so there's that. And yes this is all 100% my opinion, just felt like getting it out there.

Even the German intelligence agency Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV) - Federal Agency for the Protection of the Constitution - had them on their observation list for some time. That's also why Rammstein made the song "Links, 2, 3, 4" with the pretty obvious lyrics of "Sie wollen mein Herz am rechten Fleck/Doch schau ich dann nach unten weg/Dann schlägt es links" - "They want my heart in the right place/But if I look down/Than it beats left". They also talked about growing up in the GDR multiple times and originally coming out of the left-alternative scene. @@heyitsAxone Colombian guy here, and yes, they are massively popular, although they don't visit us that often. Hopefully, a new World Tour (a real one, not "US and Europe" only tour) would bring them back.

Yeah, people, you're right, the song is fanservice for their huge base in Mexico (according to Spotify I think Mexico City is their number one most active region), that doesn't mean the song doesn't appeal to Spanish people as well. These countries are linked in culture, and I think the song landed well in Spain, too. I mean, why wouldn't they be happy about a song in Spanish? :D I mean their one song about America isn't really appealing to Americans, either.... at least if you actually understand the song. This song also made me so glad to have taken that one year of Spanish in school. Just hgad to look up two or so words and understood everything. :D

I am new to the Rammstein craze. These guys are weird, and I love it! They give a big 🖕to conventional. I’ve been a metal head for 40 years, even took my daughters to metal concerts but I didn’t know much about Rammstein. I really missed out.

I had the pleasure of seeing these guys once. Easily the best live band I have ever seen. From the sound itself, to their music, to the vibe, to the imagery, it is all amazing!

How amazing is Rammstein? In a small enclosed music stage they did the whole pirotechniques of Du hast and all..... even a friggin flamethrower , best concert I´ve been to.

There is another thing: If you look at their videos, you will notice them exchanging smiles, winks, small gestures; They are doing what they love with their very best friends.
