Samoa is home to the nicest people in the world. Even the street sellers are all really nice, and won't hassle you say you're interested in what they're selling. I spent a week there and every single person I met there was awesome. However, if you do go there, be warned - it's bloody hot!

I think I'm probably saying this for the first time, and potentially the last time, but I think China has the right idea. Having a single "standard" time zone would be odd for a while because of the sun not rising/setting at what we consider the "appropriate" time, but in the long run it would solve a LOT of problems that frequently pop up due to time zones and things like daylight savings. Particularly when you're dealing with stuff internationally.

To those saying China is not wrong ... It is. I think that what @VirtuallyChoco is mentionning here is that the time are switched. Eastern China is AHEAD of Western China. So When it's 7am by the Sun in eastern China it's 3am by the sun in wester china. The same way that when it's midnight in London it's 8am in Beijing

Julien Tricheux its right, you're the one interpreting it wrong. Sunrise in western China is at 7.30 am, while eastern at 3.30 am. China only had 1 timezone, +8, so your london - beijing comparison is wrong.

You got the Chinese time wrong. The time zone is more (or less) in line with Beijing. Sunrise/sunset are 'normal' in the east, while Tibet and Xinjiang are WAY off (clock-wise).

To be honest, I think the PRC's approach actually makes sense. I'd be all in favour of a single timezone for the entire globe; having set times to wake up and go back to sleep is just as much of a human-made convention as timezones are, and adjusting to the idea you'll wake up at (say) 20:00 and go to bed at 11:00 is less of hassle than having to convert times on every occassion you talk to somebody from another timezone.

You wouldn't change a thing regarding the necessary conversion, even add more difficulty to it. Because we have the timezones, we know the business hours of locations. If we hadn't timezones and everyone would stick to the sun, we would need much more information or calculation to determine when we can reach someone. Or do you think stores in New York would be open from 8 am GMT to 7 pm GMT? ;)
