San Francisco is my city but lol, as someone from Mexican heritage I have never heard of Californios or Mexicans being accepted as equals after the US won. Californios such as Jose Castro were HEAVILY against American interventionism, the gayest district of the city is named after him.

Born and raised in SF and still here at 28. It's really complicated to explain how I feel about the current state of the city because I think parts of the picture are exaggerated while other parts are underestimated and not taken seriously, and there are also a lot of factors to bare in mind when looking at the current state of the city but the one thing I will say is that it's just not as lively as it used to be. I think anyone who says otherwise hasn't been here long enough.

It is a little depressing commuting into downtown SF lately. Every weekday feels like a Sunday. That said, restaurants and bars in my neighborhood in Oakland are way busier than before the pandemic. SF's losses are probably lots of other nearby cities' gains. Hopefully SF officials will stop bellyaching and use this as an opportunity to make downtown an attractive place to work, live, and visit for everyone, not just the 1 percent. Trying to shame companies into forcing their employees back into their soul-sucking cubicles is not going to work.

Even with historical footage you can see where development of the city (and area) starts to plateau around the 60s. Reasons would probably be an entire video on its own. But giving a rather stagnant region the most exciting and fast growing industry in the modern world has lead to unsurprising problems. I do think it can be wonderful again if it gets its act together. It's a major metropolis waiting to happen.

1970's no more free/unclaimed land globally. The end of profit and the beginning of inviting new frontiers to profit from as a means of staving the stomach from digesting itself. Look at wall street they don't make anything and their investments largely don't really go to making anything material that is a good or a service. Look at the decline of investment in economic multiplying infrastructure across the country. We used to take pride in that stuff now we whine because it costs to much and its far more politically expedient to kick the can down the road. Completely detached from the way things worked 60 years ago. The brand-stripping of America by capital.

San Fransisco is often mentioned, at least outside the US, as being the only city in the US that has preserved the proper 'city landscape' by avoiding some of the auto-infrastructure. As an outsider to the city and country, it seems any cities' issues in the developed world are foremost a symptom (positive or negative) of the country and second - city politics. From what I've read, the 'pricing boom' of housing in San Fransisco is aligned with any city in the US or the EU. The average one bedroom apartment rental price is the same in SF as in some Nordic city centres. I don't see any reason for 'a fall' for San Fransisco as it still attaines a healthy job market. (Homeless people is a completely separate issue that usually has nothing to do with a city and everything to do with country policies. It's basically a choice.)

And, SF and Silicon Valley still is the high tech capital of the world with more millionaires and billionaires living here outside of the NYC area in the US. Well, 'twas good as far as it went but 'seems not QUITE up-to-date? To begin the restoration of S.F., I suggest that the Cliff House that burned in 1907 (having survived that '06 quake) be re-built on that same site where it was, identically to the original. Such a thing would prove as monumental toward this goal; full- circle and a triumph utterly. The criticism of San Fran's "dangerous'ness" oozes Jealousy from both sides of the political Aisle. You have progressives who would love to live in San Fran and are even willing to carry pepper spray and a revolver if needed, and you have the conservatives who're upset besides the crime and what not it's a lot nicer than their uninteresting town, or how people are willing to spend that sort of money renting in San Fran with all of their problems instead of willing to move into towns like theirs.

Oh yeah, who doesn't love looting every single day and needles and piles of shit on the streets? I would say keep that shit on the west coast but that scourge has made it's way across the country, so that ship has sailed.

I like your work but how can you make a documentary about San Francisco called the “rise and fall” in 2023 and end the whole thing with your last citation being the 2013 recovery from the 2008 crash? The last 10 years has been quite eventful.

The whole of the City of San Francisco is northeast of the fault, not directly on it. San Francisco Bay Area, however, could be characterized as being directly on it.

I think you need to update your video to reflect the mass exodus from California, as well as the corruption of San Fran; their high homelessness, drugs, defecation in the streets, the need for a "poop / needle map" to get round the city safely, their high crime, along with L.A. is one of the most violent cities in the U.S. outside Chicago, and D.C.

One thing you could have mentioned is all those people that came to California for the gold rush but ended up broke were able to re-invent themselves. Because everyone had something in common. They are all "immigrants" and they are all broke, so with no "home eyes" looking at them they can admit they are failures and can then start fresh from scratch. Though much hardship that attitude is what makes California particularly SF and Silicon Valley ideal start-up culture. I've met many people here that worked for failed startups but they all said they learned a lot and made good connections which they would have not if working for a big company. However, much has changed. Resting on tradition of the gold rush, startups, etc. seems to have evaporated. As I see more and more empty lots and buildings the area is becoming like Detroit. Once a mighty city but now a shell of what it was. I also noticed everyone I knew who moved out of California has seen their standard of living go up.

Hey Ryan, like your content. Can you go to the places you discuss in lieu of using stock footage & sitting at home on your computer? Don’t mean to shade u man but, all points u make would be so much richer if you shot them yourself instead of genaric footage of places we see in lots of vids. Thanks Don’t get mad

@jamesmiller4184

Yes, Nathan, right at the beginning! He said it quickly and so was easy to miss. It was truly "The Paris of the Pacific" and, is to be-so again in a better near-future one hopes. We look greatly-forward to the coming "Golden Gate International Exhibition of PEACE -- 2030!!" As I envision it being, in large part 'twill be also in celebration of the Hawaii State being given its independence by the U.S., because of terrible past wrongs as done them, it becoming once again a constitutional kingdom for Hawaiians, and their invited guests. (The blood-lineage of royalty from Queen Liliuokalani continuing.)

How do we know quarantines stop plagues? You're saying they didn't implement the measures yet only 120 people died over the course of a few years. 120 deaths from any disease is not abnormal. Should they have stayed quarantined for years? How long would they need to remain quarantined to stop the spread?
