Scottie Pippen has more games in the playoffs shooting under 30% than he has scoring 30+ points in the regular season. Look it up. He could not be a reliable scorer, in fact he was a very VERY limited scorer. He had no offensive package whatsoever. Transition scoring, spot up 3’s and a baby post hook was his go to moves and none of those were reliable in the playoffs.

That entire Bulls team also developed a defensive edge and mentality by playing with Jordan. He was already a DPOY and one of if not the best defensive perimeter player in the league before guys like Scottie and Horace became serviceable 2nd and 3rd options on a championship level team. When you have Jordan as well, it's not exactly like Pippen had to worry about everything on the defensive end. They were likely comfortable asking Pippen to do all those things because they also had Jordan doing a lot of those things. Jordan was nearly just as capable off-ball and generally better on-ball when it came to defense. Jordan and Scottie were basically interchangable on defense especially during the first 3-peat, except Jordan was also asked to carry the entire offense as well. During the 2nd 3-peat you can pretty much say the same thing. Except now you had Ron Harper and Rodman who are also both elite defenders. And that took a lot of pressure off of Scottie and allowed him to go out and be as versatile as he was. They had a safety net of 3 other great defensive players in case anything went wrong.

LOW A GOAT. OG knows his stuff too (even though he was unnecessarily hating on MJ that one time with some inaccurate facts here and there) But overall I love how these guys know their stuff. I appreciate my man pulling for Scottie as well. But I feel he was off about bigs being favored. They were but for good reason. The game was played mostly through the paint offensively so at that time rim protection definitely trumped the perimeter. Now today would probably be a different story. Being a versatile wing defender is much more important than it was back then but the key is still versatility coupled with rim protection. How to stop the most valued shots. Embiid, Giannis, and AD when healthy are in my opinion the absolute best defenders in the league year in and year out because of that versatility. Lastly yes, Pippen did A LOT including deflections, defensive WS and leading the league in steals but remember with Robinson and Hakeem it wasn't just about their 3.5 to 4.5 blocks per game. They could also get you around 2 steals too! Killing everyone else in overall STOCKS AND defensive WS.

Pippen & Hakeem are not comparable. It’s just not. Pippen (like it or not) was a sidekick. Number 2 guy. Hakeem was the main guy. Resumes and the 6-0 in the finals thing - it’s only a thing when comparing comparable players. Comparing Pippen (a number 2 for nearly his entire career) to Hakeem (a number 1 for almost all his career) is not comparable. There’s likely 20 players just straight up better than Pippen simply because they were the best players on championship contenders or winners their careers. Pippen was never the best player on a championship team. Never an MVP, never a finals MVP. He just is not top 20.

Hakeem's 2 rings as the head honcho hold more weight than Scottie's 6 rings as the Robin does. Scottie never could have won a title as the main man, he had limited ability to close out crucial games with his scoring. Defensively, Hakeem clears Scottie too, Hakeem had to be the Rocket's consistent rock every night on both ends in order for his Rockets to have a chance. Scottie did not have that same pressure, there were many nights where Larry Bird, Grant Hill, Chris Mullins, Jamal Masburn, Larry Johnson, Adrian Dantley, etc would get there's against Scottie and the Bulls would still win or be in the game.

We all look at basketball differently so I think it just comes down to how you view it and what you prioritize. This generation looks at scoring as the end all be all and unfortunately because of that we've lost the importance of great on ball defenders, great off ball defenders, great role players who did what they had to do in order to solidify a role for themselves on teams or in the case of Scottie was to defer to Jordan when it came offensively and be that complimentary player he was.

He was doing too much as in literary leading the offense and defense of the team as well as being the point forward. He literally led the team in every statistical category, that should explain itself. Of course he needed help and had been asking for it , like I said basketball is never a 1 vs 5 but 5 vs 5, so no matter how good you are there's a limit to how far you can take your team without a good support system in place. People always talk about 30ppg etc, Scottie put up a lot of that when necessary that year but his assignment has always been playmaking and defense before scoring. Go watch the game against the suns that year he got 35 on Barkley n dominated the game once he was switched to defend Charles, watch the game against the Bullets in March he dominated the whole game scoring 30, watch the revenge game against the Mavs, ( he was going for 50 in revenge against Mashburn but was mysteriously not allowed by Phil to play the 4th qtr, he got 36pts in 3 Qtrs, dominating all ways) watch the games against Charlotte they lost some but close and you can just see his dominance in all the games, against New York , Christmas day and Jordan's return in Chicago it was Pip dominating, against the Lakers he had 40 at home close loss ( almost single handedly won the game) 34 in win at LA ..it goes on n on bro. This is funny. Jordan was a better one-on-one, lockdown defender than Pippen was. Pippen could move his feet really well and was long and tenacious, therefore he was quite versatile as a defender. He played excellent team defense and had good hands.. definitely one of the best perimeter defender one the 90s, and all time. But that's where it stops.
