Owned quite a few old Holdens(Australian) in the past with mechanical distributors. They have a centrifugal weight and spring mechanism to advance the spark from around 5 degrees to 30-35 at max rpm. You could mess with the spring rates to get quicker advance on a tuned motor. Then came electronic ignition where you can map an exact advance curve.

The ones I had back in the 70's and 80's also had a vacuum advance.

That's going back a few years now.

Great advice for general use of esc. For me….. 18deg on the can, sensored only, 90deg of timing 😊. All in 1.5 seconds.

Interesting. That's quite a bit of adjustment.

I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0L straight 6 engine, it has a distributor on it. Do you recommend Smart Sense for speed run cars also as I am currently using sensored only.

Wow I'm surprised that in 1997 they were still around. I would recommend smart sense for all applications until I find a good reason to say otherwise.

Lower turn senrored motors operate better within their useful sensors threshold

What do you mean? I'm using mostly 0.5 or 1.0 turn motors.

Does vacuum advance come into play when talking about vehicle distributors??? Rhetorical question...

For optimum fuel mileage on an unmodified street car yes …..vacuum advance on a properly tuned modified engine doesn’t affect much.
