Originally, Ashborn was just looking for a body to take over. The plan was to gradually adapt the new body to accept Ashborn's full power. But after living in Sung Jin Woo's mind and memories, he decided to make him his successor, thus betraying the Architect.

Continuing the above statement: The Architect did not agree and wanted to destroy Jin due to the broken promise between Ashborne and the Architect. Because Architect wantwd to be given a reward, sorta like power from Ashborne while Ashborne wanted a new "body". Instead, Ashborne grew fond of Jin, due to his great and often stupid tendencies to go into Dungeons that even HE couldnt survive. Which in turn brought him as close to death as possible. So Ashborne gave him an option: Die now. And live in this Illusionary World. Or Take over his powers and become the new Shadow Monarch. Why? Because Ashborne had had enough of wars and killings and wanted to rest. Eternally. Jin wanted power. Not ONLY to kill the Monarchs. But to allow Ashborne rest. He also wanted powers to protect his family. And he decided to choose to become the Next Shadow Monarch. Remember when Ashborne smiled at him. In the LN, Ashborne said "Thank you." And Jin replied with, "Rest well." It was a subtle but very profound way Jin showed his respect.

*****THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS COMMENT***** Ashborn was originally just looking for a vessel he could take over like the other monarchs because he and the dragon king both were too powerful to just pick anybody. Before Jinwoo got the system Ashborn was watching him and his constant struggle as the weakest E-rank to stay alive always skirting the edge of death and persisting. Then after Jinwoo got the system and Ashborn watched him grow he came to like Jinwoo. The second time Jinwoo went to the Cartenon temple was supposed to be when Ashborn took control of the body but instead Jinwoo just saw part of Ashborn’s past which is why the Architect freaked the fuck out when he realized it was Jinwoo in control of the body, plus Jinwoo got the black heart and the black heart was Ashborn’s way of making sure Jinwoo would actually become his successor or cementing the fact that Jinwoo was going to be his successor. So it seems that was when Ashborn really made his choice to have Jinwoo be an actual successor rather than just be a vessel. Then, when Jinwoo died to the Beast and Frost Monarch, Ashborn gave him the choice to either stay in the death realm or go back. And by choosing to go back Jinwoo *really* became the shadow monarch, and it’s semi-implied it’s because Ashborn went into the eternal slumber that Jinwoo could fully take the mantle which is what lead to the Beast Monarch running away. And the phrasing of the scene where Jinwoo chooses (at least in the manhwa) almost implies that if Jinwoo had chosen to stay in the death realm Ashborn would have taken control of the body, not that it would have mattered too much since Jinwoo and Ashborn became “the same person” according to Ashborn. Ashborn even goes as far as to say that, “No matter who controls the body it won’t be strange because I am you, and you are me.” And Jinwoo doesn’t deny the statement and even says, “I know, I’m you after all.” when Ashborn is about to tell him how to return to life.

Jin Woo glared back at the abyss and said “f this, ima take over” and Ashborn basically said “I like him”. Ashborn was probably the most powerful ruler but what I like about Ashborn is that he’s extremely humble and wants someone like Jin Woo to take over and entrust his role.

S is kinda weird for me, because when I originally read this as a novel, it was my first ever light novel. It seemed so long at over 200 chapters, but over the past 5 years I've read tens of thousands of chapters, maybe close to a total of 70 or 80k, which I know is a lot but I read about a chapter in about 3-6 minutes, depending on the length. Just for some rough math, if I read for 8 hours a day, every day for 5 years, I could've read 146k chapters, and that's assuming that each chapter toom me 6 minutes on average, so I didn't actually read that much, but much more than most, at about 4 hours a day. The 3 longest of them that I've read to are ~ ch900 -the legendary mechanic; ch1100- reincarnated as an energy with a system; and ch800- lightning is the only way. Now it seems like a short story in comparison. I know I'm around the 500s for trash of the counts family as well. In total, I read a fuck ton and this was long and feels short In comparison.

I do kind of hate that Jinwoo was chosen based on strength of character. Not because that's bad but because that's boring. You know what would have sucked but been entertaining? That he was chosen because he was weak and Ashborn or even the architect was taking the piss OR that in order to prove that the system was worth it they had to pick THE WEAKEST to become the strongest. That said throughout the story the way characters seem to be written - hunters anyways - no matter how nice or even benevolent they are a lot of them are jerks. Jerks who would not protect the world unless they hold it at ransom while Jinwoo wouldn't care about that stuff. He'd use his power to do what's right every time regardless of any other desire and more so because his desire is to be the strongest. So I guess its not that they had to have the weakest guy. They really needed an earnest person. Imagine if anyone else that isn't Joohee or Cha recieving the system. They'd likely turn into more powerful assholes than they already were
