*The "Kyle is wrong!" FAQ* 1. I know that Uru is the metal in question in the comics AND I know that everywhere other than Ragnarok says "in" a dying star not "from." But like I said in the video, I'm just using Thor's words in this film, because this is the film where it shatters, and it lets us talk about awesome physics! (UPDATING) -- KH

Assuming the "fading magic" would somehow prevent the pieces from exploding and they'd just lie there on the ground... would the mass of the hammer throw earth out of its orbit if it's from a neutron star?

Well guess what, Thor was wrong. Cos if that was the case, anytime he dropped it or placed it on the ground it would sink to the ground pulling different parts of your body at different speed causing you to tear apart. Also Loki would have definitely been squashed when Thor put his hammer on him.

If you go by Norse myths, his hammer isn't made from a dying star, it's just made from really dense metal making it really heavy, but it's not an "only the worthy can lift it" it's an "only the person/giant with a backhoe could lift it".
@hurjireepz70212 жыл бұрын
The hammer doesn't become impossibly heavy at will. It simply just refuses to move and stays in its place. This explains why an elevator can move the hammer because it's not really a person. But once the hammer senses that it's a person (not worthy) trying to lift it, it refuses to move because of the enchantment Odin gave.

Kyle, you also forgot to mention the mere gravitational density the shards themselves would place the Earth under. Whether the metal was white dwarf or neutron star the shared remnants of Mjolnir would have their own catastrophic effects on the Earth, for example the orbital displacement and the direct grip of all nearby tectonic plates being forcibly shifted.
@callmev35317 жыл бұрын
They mentioned his hammer was made from the heart of a dying star in the first Thor, but in Ragnarok, they elaborated further that it was made out of a “special metal”. This metal in the comics is called Uru metal and it is like the Asgardian equivalent to Vibranium or Adamantium. For all we know, Uru metal could actually just be one of these metals since both of them are made from meteors, meaning they are not naturally from Earth. However, that just a personal theory, since from my knowledge, Vibranium and Adamantium aren’t seen on other worlds.

The hammer is made from a magical material known as Uru Metal, it was forged by three Nidavellir Dwarves by order of Odin and required the heat of a star to forge. The process took seventeen weeks from start to finish, and at the end of the process the star exploded, thus it was forged in the heat of a dying star. This event happened about 65 million years ago according to the comics, and the star exploding may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs in the Marvel Comics Universe.

When the metal is no longer in the star...it's no longer under pressure. Therefore it wouldn't be as dense, but it would retain certain properties. Like the ability to absorb certain kinds of energy, e.g "magic". Just a thought.
@frantisekvrana39022 жыл бұрын
6:40 Technically, only about half of the energy would actually hit Earth (Somewhat more, because atmosphere). The rest would be immediately radiated into space.

The hammer isn't made from dead star matter, it is made from a metal called Uru, and was forged in a dying star. Script writers for the movie got it wrong. The forging process of the Uru metal, to turn it into the hammer, caused the star to die, and the heat of the now dying star is hot enough for the final touches required for the Uru metal . 43 pounds I believe, is the weight of Thor's hammer. It's ability to control lightning, comes from Odin using the hammer, to seal a storm (I can't remember which one). As for who/what determines who is worthy of Thor's hammer: That would be the arbitrary rules placed there by the one who placed the magic onto the hammer.

Great video, Kyle! Both immensely enjoyable and humbling (thinking about neutronium always sends a shiver down my spine). Unfortunately, it's all based on an incorrect premise... Mjolnir was forged in the heart of a dying star, not made out of it. On paper Mjolnir is made of Uru, a mythical and undefined metal. On screen the material used for Mjolnir's construction has never been addressed. P.S. 7:26 Almost died laughing! (Edited for P.S.)

What I always found interesting is that Mjolnir decides not to move for an unworthy person but constantly moves with the Earth. Both spinning around Earth's axis, as well as with Earth around the sun, with the solar system around the Milky Way's center, and with the Milky Way around the gravitational center of the local group. That's one heck of a lot of vectors it has to be able to keep track of constantly. Imagine it forgot to compensate for only one vector for a split second, the crater it would cause in the surface of Earth would be gigantic. We are talking about making the Siberian Trap look like an anthill, and the Chixculub crater like a tiny dimple in a grain of sand by comparison.
@gerolindenberg80177 жыл бұрын
That's the same mistake Neil deGrasse Tyson made when he calculated the weight of Mjölnir. The hammer is not made from dead star matter, but forged inside a dying star. Mjölnir weighs in at 42.3 pounds and is made out of Uru, possilby the Asgardian name for metallic form of hydrogen.
@GiantButterKnife7 жыл бұрын
Normally I would agree with you, but in the clip from the film, Thor clearly says it is made "FROM the heart of a dying star." Now, this could have been a script error, but if it's in the film, it's canon (at least for the MCU version).

@biohazard7247 жыл бұрын
Simply Green Translation error? I always thought it should say wield and not lift or hold. That's probably why some people are able to *lift* it in the first place, they have no desire to use it beyond handing it directly back to Thor. As for deciding actual worthiness, it's subjective. Magical AI script constantly updating and rewriting itself. Recently Thor became unworthy simply because he was told as much. So if you're worthy but get sufficiently convinced of the opposite you lose it. Storm was deemed worthy due to her connecting with the weather magic held in the hammer. Jane Foster was in the middle of a losing battle but resolved to fight it out to the end anyway (late stage cancer).
@baronvonbrunn85964 жыл бұрын
I know that shattered URU wouldn´t do that much, but as it was said many times, they have needed a whole colapsing star to make that material and form it to its final form (form it to form... ehmmm...). so it is deffinitely an amazing material, and very, very dense.

The issue is that the hammer, by itself, isnt overly dense. We have seen it in the comics and in the movies kinda just sitting there, whether it be on an ordinary table or such mundane circumstance. So unless the magic intentionally lessens the density to just sit in place when Thor ISNT weilding it, its most likely not absurdly heavy normally. Not until a living entity attempts to move it, in which case the magic will judge them and adjust density from that point

Soooo this is off topic, but same line of thought as magical weapons for superheroes. How would Wonder Woman's sheath work if the sword can cut at an atomic level, or why it doesn't accidentally cut air particle and cause an atomic explosion? Possibly magnetism? Having a slight charge would help create a barrier for the sheath to keep the sword from ever touching the edges under "normal circumstance" and may also help to push other atoms, not intended for slicing through, out of the way, and may also help increase the blades sharpness since if the material that is being cut through, the atoms of the material on a subatomic level would have a slight push away from the blade, making a cleaner cut.

Kevin Tibble You're not wrong, but considering that a star is basically a massive ongoing explosion, it doesn't start properly 'dying' until it has reached a point where the mass it contains can no longer support its continued existence and begins to decay, ironically becoming more active and volatile than ever as literal planets worth of mass are ejected in explosive waves of fiery death that take millions of years to settle.

I think it' an assumption that Thor's hammer becomes incredibly heavy. Considering it's enchanted (and a little bit sentient), the hammer may be fixing itself in one place in space using magic - hence why traditionally pure muscle hasn't been able to shift the hammer (also explains why no one thought of chipping away at the ground under Mjolnir in the original movie).

Seemed like when Thor's hammer shattered that the pieces weren't obliterated, so perhaps the magic holding it together wasn't broken and even though the hammer was broken into smaller pieces the magic around the whole hammer separated to uniformly surround the individual pieces?

Mjolnir must have some terrifying metallic bonds. If the uru required a star to heat it to a forging ready state then it would either have to be a terrible conductor or an overly great one with ultra high metallic bonds. Option one means it wouldn't be able to shoot lightning so that's out. Option 2 would mean it would be normally very could to the touch and nearly impossible to break

It doesn't come from a star it was uoru metal given to Odin by the dwarves after he helped defeat the trolls it's power is based in a universe ending storm trapped inside by Odin using the Odin force
@GuyWithAnAmazingHat7 жыл бұрын
It's far more powerful according to current canon, since within the metal itself is a sentient galactic scale storm that destroys galaxies. So basically Mjolnir is galactic storm encased within magical uru metal and is forged with the heat and pressure of a neutron star. If it explodes, it will destroy the Milky way and neighbouring galaxies.

SURPRISE THOR'S HAMMER!!!!!!!
@tieflingcorpse98177 жыл бұрын
I hope they make it so that when Milner is destroyed Thor is emotionally distraught. Because if you didn't know, Norse god weapons are sentient and even have they're own personality, the only reason why you don't hear him talk in the movie is probably because only Thor can hear Milner talk as it is his weapon.

Personally I don't think Mjolnir is actually all that heavy. I personally believe the theory that the hammer is in fact a fixed point in the universe and that it doesn't move through the universe so much as the universe moves around it. Thor can "wield" Mjolnir because he has the correct quantum frequency to be able to provide the leverage needed to move the universe around the fixed point that is his hammer. I personally think that's a lot cooler than a magic weight-changing hammer.
@marvelstarwars__7 жыл бұрын
Selena Gamya The hammer is about 45 pounds I believe, you don't need your theory, it's already official canon 😂
@101Mant7 жыл бұрын
Selena Gamya since all movement is relative to frames of reference the concept of a fixed point is meaningless. You can treat anything as being still with the universe moving around it, it's just not usually a useful frame of reference.

Yeah but the Flash can run faster than the speed of light... in other words comics are not really known to adhere to most of the somewhat obscure fundamental principles of physics and instead tend to operate by virtue of hyperbolic extensions of more conventional human intuition about how the universe works (i.e. speeds can increase arbitrarily; it is possible to be at rest relative to "the universe" etc.). I find it annoying most of the time but setting that aside, the concept mentioned by the OP in this thread is pretty cool even if the science is flawed. Flawed science is nearly unavoidable in science fiction, because it's rare for someone with the passion and creativity of a fiction writer to also have a deep level of education in hard science.

It couldn't be graviton emission increase because it would then just crush through anything under it. I mean it doesn't seem to do much in the way of downward force until something pushes back up against it to try to lift it.

the hammer is made IN THE FIRES of a dying star, the hammer is made of Uru, the legendary nordic metal.
@spuntrader48386 жыл бұрын
He could be referring to the "core" as the "heart", not literally the neutron core itself. The very outer layer a neutron star is actually a few cm of ultra-dense iron.

I think the Hammer actually moved itself, no one picked it but requested it to move. And the Hammer was "forged IN the heart of a star" not forged from. So it does not make itself heavier but just refuses to move or applies force in a particular direction. Which is why it goes up and down in a lift when left in it, instead of snapping the lifts cable like its made of cotton candy. Which makes me wonder exactly how much force/energy the hammer has to generate in order to do all of the tricks it does. Just how many cities could we power off that energy lol?
