I was literally just thinking about this movie the other day! The subplot about Shaun’s stepdad in particular, and how in his last moments he *apologizes* for not being as good a father as he could have been. The fact that, as a zombie, his instinct is to turn the radio off speaks to how that was just his “wiring” and not something done out of hate or annoyance towards Shaun specifically. He’s a gruff dude that was trying his best. Bill Nighy was perfect for the role.
@Claymann71
@Claymann71 9 ай бұрын
Billy Nighy played a SUBLIME 'hate-able *sshole'. If I rate an Actor on how much they emotionally effected me, he's up there with the Top 10 Best Actors as Villains. I agree. He's not motivated by Hate so much as Apathy, the true Opposite of Love. He was even somewhat 're-deemed' in the end. Damn good writing!

I really like the idea about the story being about Shaun trying to "grow up" and largely screwing it up. It's a reminder that ultimately, none of us have all of life's answers and we're all just winging it no matter how "in control" we have convinced ourselves we are.

Nick Frost said that he was basically exactly as parasitic to Pegg in real life as his character is to Shaun. He couch surfed in Pegg's apartment for years. Also as one 29 year old to another, i also understand the horrible urge to flee from real adulthood. All I can say is this: your comfort zone will kill you (nearly literally in the case of the film)

As someone also around this age I will add that adulthood is gonna look different for different people, and sometimes it takes time to find the "flavour" that is right for you- and that can also change over time. Don't try to force yourself into a box. One thing I have learned from growing up is literally everyone is just fcking winging it, like I kind of knew this as a kid but I had no idea it was this bad lmao. We're gonna be fine guys😂

I honestly believe this movie is the finest Z word film ever made. One thing that sticks out to me is that it the ending a nearly pitch perfect depiction of life after COVID. You know, the world changes irrevocably… but things kind of go back to normal. Z-words still exist, but they’re working menial jobs or are isolated, people argue about best safety measures on live tv, and the world just kind of keeps going. An anti-apocalypse.

I think David is the play on that asshole (can’t remember his name) from night of the living dead who turn out to be right about staying in the basement. Sure he is right about a lot of things in the movie like Shaun’s leadership and plan and that staying where they were really was the v better option. But at the same time I argue that being right about something doesn’t stop him from being a useless scumbag. He doesn’t help at all with their situation sometimes even making it worse. Reveals how much a toxic boyfriend he is and doesn’t hesitate to shoot Shaun and his mom despite being a “pacifist” and despite criticizing Shaun at every turn he still goes with him. If the apocalypse is a metaphor for change than it shows that change can sometimes bring out peoples most toxic traits

Ontop of being hilarious, relatable, well performed, edited, shot written and directed. Jessica Stevenson goes by Jessica Hines professionally now. This is seared into my brain from watching the Spaced episodes with commentary a bunch of times. She introduces herself as "Jessica Hines nee Stevenson" every time. Those commentaries from the boxset are really fun. They have commentary by Hines, Pegg and Wright, with celebrity guest fans of the show like Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino (who hardly ever does commentary for his own films), Patton Oswalt, and Bill Hader.

This reading of Shawn of the Dead is so fucking poignant. As someone who was abused and then abandoned, I was forced into my own uncomfortable period of growth but I just got off the phone with a TV exec who loves my script and wants to help me get it optioned as a feature and this is 1.5 years after my abuser left me in a state close to suicide. Some things changed but some things stayed the same. I am just a lot more focused and a lot freer than before. Seeing your reading makes me feel better about my life and makes me love this movie even more. I'm super glad you decided to talk about it.

I find a fascinating yet additionally tragic connection between Shaun and Oppenheimer. That being Shaun's half-baked heroic plan ends up becoming the proverbial bomb that destroys his comfortable world. It was interesting how you noted how ironic it was that if he had done nothing, his friends probably would've had a better chance at survival. But I can imagine many in his situation would probably think similarly in wanting to keep their friends and family safe. However his sudden ambition - albiet selfish - to become a hero ends up leading him to a devasting future that he has to live with. I love this movie to death and as hilarious as it is, it has some pretty deep and dark themes that even on my (idk how many times I've watched this at this point) umpteenth time watching, there is always something new to discover.

I first watched Shaun of the Dead as a teenager, and re-watched it recently as a 31 year old. It's been a completely different experience. As a teenager, it was a funny physical comedy, where the characters were like these grown ups who were silly and a bit stupid. As a 31 year old, it's been a sobering experience of watching full grown adults screw up their lives over and over again, walking around in their day-to-day as emotional zombies, taking their relationships and lives for granted and choosing to fuck them up. Let's just say that finishing my late-20s in apocalyptic lockdowns did a number on my mental health and perspective on life. I love coming back to movies after a decade or two - good movies grow up with you, and Shaun of the Dead does so gracefully. I rewatched the entire Cornetto trilogy recently, and really looking forward to your thoughts on the other two. The World's End surprised me the most on rewatch, because I'd forgotten how ultimately bleak the ending is. (And the thought of loved ones being replaced by Blanks, without even being noticeable, was a genuinely horrifying concept that I didn't grasp fully when watching the first time.)

Great points! I think the reason I didn't like World's End back when I saw it as a teen was because I thought the heart of the trilogy was supposed to be the tight bromantic friendship between Pegg and Frost's characters, so the dynamic of their characters in World's really soured the film for me. But you're totally right--Ed was not good for Shaun. They are a stellar duo because of the actors, but their friendship definitely wasn't the heart of the film. I guess I never stopped to rethink these films because I haven't seen any but Hot Fuzz as an adult. I'm definitely going to have to marathon them now that I can view them more complexly. Fun fact, Dianne actually ALSO survives, as revealed in some DVD special features for the film. There was a deleted scene where she showed back up during the epilogue and a set of motion comics that detailed some of the events that happen off screen (including a pretty hilarious one about how Shaun had to keep slowing down while leading the zombies away from the pub, because he kept handily outrunning them). One of the other motion comics details how Dianne managed to evade the surrounding zombies after she ran outside by using David's severed arm as a kudgel and then climbing a tree to wait for the army to rescue her... during which she ate some of David's arm for sustenance. Grim, but hey, she made it out alive!

You did it! A new perspective on a modern classic. Cheers. Can't wait for the world's end video because it becomes more my favorite with each rewatch of the trilogy

This movie has that apathetic feel to humanity also seen in Hitchhiker's Guide. The main plot is essentially a nuisance to the protagonist that he has to just deal with so he can get back to his pint/tea

As a massive fan of both this channel and the cornetto movies, the prospect of getting multiple videos on them is an absolute TREAT. Even the tiny mention of TWE in that prior dissection of the Ritual got me hyped as hell so I'm excited to get a deeper dive on that one especially. Looking frward to it tysm :)))

One of my favorite details in the film is that Shaun is the one who keeps leaving the front door open, not Ed. On the second day, Shaun is the only one to enter and exit through the front door before the tuxedo zombie walks in. It's kind of a microcosm of the film itself. Shaun is using Ed as an excuse to not take responsibility for his laziness in life, and it isn't until the literal apocalypse walks through their front door that Shaun takes some responsibility and shuts the door.

11:02 okay, the "post-9/11 anxieties" portion had me ready to snort derisively, but then you mentioned foot & mouth and mad cow disease.. and now I'm remembering how many zombie movies came out around that time centered on prion disease, problems of mass agriculture, and problems of population density. I believe there was also SARS and a kuru outbreak in NZ that contributed to these fears around 2003. I love the way horror can be examined as a microcosm of societal anxieties in the past! Excellent review btw, not a "hack job" at all, good on you for kicking imposter syndrome in the butt! Excited to see your upcoming entries on the rest of the trilogy.

I think a lot of 20 and 30 somethings can relate to the character of Shaun. Shaun essentially is still a teenager and doesn’t like the idea of responsibilities, something that The Worlds End would cover as well. Speaking as a 27 year old male myself who still feels like I’m 15 years old, because nothing in my life has changed since I was 15 and I’m unprepared for adult life. But Shaun Of The Dead along with 28 Days Later also touches the themes of a sense of freedom during times of chaos. As during times of unprecedented chaos there is no laws and hierarchy, there essentially is no rich or poor. In the beginning scenes of 28 Days Later where Cillian Murphy is roaming the empty streets of London you see a big poster of a women smiling, essentially a smile for the freedom of no hierarchy. And Shaun is much better prepared for utter chaos, than the struggles of the everyday monotonous life he loathes.

Ryan, absolutely no shade given for any of these masterpieces. Anyone and everyone can think of them as they want. And every time I see a take on any of them, i watch them again. They are just so good, and you can absolutely see their brilliance in previous works. Shaun is my fav, Hot Fuzz is the pinnacle, and The End is a literal gut punch of a movie. Each and every one makes me want to give my friends and family a hug.

This isn't just one of my favorite zombie movies, this is one of my favorite movies. Checking out the Blu-Ray extras, I was really surprised how many set-ups and pay-offs, foreshadowing and depth in writing there is in this movie. As well, Ryan brought about a lot of perspectives and aspects I hadn't noticed. It was well worth the wait for this review and I'd say you accomplished your goal of saying something new about this film (I certainly hadn't thought of many of these things.) Thank you and well done, Ryan.

the Cornetto films as de-romanticization is very true, with Last Night in Soho probably being the most extreme of Edgar Wright's filmography to visit the motif

I love that you are covering these. I watched The World’s End for the first time after watching your video about The Ritual, and now I’m on a Simon Pegg binge. Most recently watched Absolutely Anything. There’s something really fun about going into a movie and connecting with everyday, average characters and then the movie doing a 180 and becoming something completely different.
