so I left Vietnam to move to Calgary, Canada 6 years ago. Yes I've settled here, have kids, house, job and everything, I'm able to provide my family and live a comfortable life here. I would love to call Canada my second home, this country has been so nice to us from the very beginning when I set foot in this land. But tbh I don't think I'm gonna stay here forever. It's not because I don't love Canada, it's just the feel of belonging is different from what I feel in Vietnam, one day maybe I'll move back.

"If they know you're a foreigner, they will bring a bunch of random sh_t to your table (when you're at a bar)" - Sound like one quick way to spend 4K USD per month. But hey, look at the bright side. It is still only $48K USD per year. Waaay cheaper than living in Monréal. Quite interesting, my niece and nephew are half Vietnamese and half Syrian. When they are in the US, we think they look more Syrian than Vietnamese. When they visited Syria, their Syrian relatives think they look more Vietnamese than Syrian. Love this kind of interviews. One can definitely relate to many experiences others have.

I'm ok with the financial aspect ...but the fact that I cannot be out of the country (Canada) for more than 6 months or else I would lose my status...etc. Sure, I would love to permanently live in SE Asia...but if I lose my status AND not become a legal resident of a SE Asian countries...what then???? You are right. Foreigners love it because in Vietnam your living cost is 20% if you manage things moderately intelligently BUT for local Vietnamese life is anything but cheap. There is definitely and without a doubt a “foreigner privilege” in Vietnam. The same applies for Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

@@Chiklet42 Racism is an interesting word. If a white European or American says to an immigrant you are not German, French, American then the white person racist, right? However in Asia if a foreigner wants to buy land he is not allowed because he is not a citizen of that country. Also getting citizenship of an Asian country is next to impossible but westerner countries give away citizenships like free c0ndoms! If a foreigner wants to buy land in Canada USA or any western country, western governments sell to foreigners half of the country. If a western real estate agent says to an Asian: I don’t want to sell you land or property he will be labeled as racist. But in Asia land is reserved only for true native citizens of that particular country. Any Asian will tell you that even if your western children are born and raised and live all their lives in an Asian country and speak an Asian language fluently they will “never” be considered Asian. Who is racist to who bro?

Here's what chatgpt said. The word you're referring to, "dipaisy," is likely "dépayser." This French term has several meanings, but it generally refers to the feeling of being disoriented or out of place, especially when someone is in an unfamiliar environment. It can also mean to change one's surroundings or to give someone a sense of being in a different place. In English, it is sometimes translated as "to disorient" or "to make feel out of place." In a more positive context, it can also imply the refreshing change of scenery.
@mango000mvy
@mango000mvy 4 ай бұрын
Dépayser includes the French word "Pays" which translate to "Country" so together with the prefix "De" basically becomes the verb version which means "Out of country". I think she meant be ready to be appreciate the change of scenery and to be challenged by the difference in culture
