Believe it or not, from what I've been seeing, there are more happy couples than you'd expect existing today. 2022 is considered by some as the "year of weddings" because so many happened then... But the modern relationships seem to NOT have much middle ground. You are either fairly/very happily together with your significant other, or your relationship/marriage is doomed from the beginning. The image of the grumpy old cantankerous married couple is just about nonexistent.

So true! Often a women's confidence is based on feeling competent. We definitely want to feel both confident and competent with each little step before moving on to the next when dealing with fire arms. Your suggested approach is great. I also have had similar in my Well Armed Woman (TWAW) local chapter (which is an all women group that meets once a month for classroom training followed by range time). Thanks for the great videos!

What do you do if you already made the mistake of being too serious? My wife seems to want nothing to do with guns now. In fact, she slips in occasional comments like "yeah I don't like loud noises" in casual conversation on other topics. As someone who trains seriously, my wife knows I want her to like shooting more than anything, but we live in a middle class neighborhood with no crime and she is not convinced that it is necessary. I've infrequently shown her a few small things over time as John suggested. I also took her to the range once and she seemed to like it a bit, but I think I've accidentally communicated too much disappointment through my tone when after the fact she still expressed distaste for shooting.

Everyone that is not an idiot bases their confidence in their competence.
@kathysharp75514 жыл бұрын
@@musicman1eanda I believe that's a fairly common husband and wife situation about any topic. Maybe try something like the approach outlined below. I'm sure you know some of this already, but I have no idea which parts, so here is all of it. Yes, It's a bit long. Fortunately, this approach can be used in just about any communication, so it has more applications than just this context: (1) Choose the right time to talk, generally when everyone is calm and happy and there won't be any interruptions. (2) At the start, let her know that you have something to talk about that is really important to you and you would really like her help thinking through it. (3) Explain why it's important, for example "I care so much for you that I sometimes worry about your safety. I realize that we live in a fairly safe area, but bad things can happen anywhere, and if something did happen I would not want to go on without you." Rephrase that to sound more like you but keep the emotional vulnerability in it. (4) Then ask how you might be able to help make shooting more enjoyable or at least a little less unpleasant for her. WARNING: This step is a bit tricky in a the following three ways. (a) FIRST, don't jump right into problem solving. Initially with patience find out what the real issues are. Noise could be one issue, but she may have another that is a bigger hurdle for her but that she has not mentioned. For example, a woman may not say, "I don't want to look stupid in front of all those men at the range" because, for example, she doesn't want to sound overly sensitive or doesn't want to sound like she's noticing other men which is totally not her point. (This is just one example, her issues could be totally different). So, pause and wait a lot to see what else she says. If she adds nothing, then maybe try some questions. (b) SECOND, Whatever issues she comes up with, respond supportively. Regardless of what she says, treat it as a valid concern worth thinking about. Even if she tells you she thinks she looks like a man when she is holding a gun, you keep a straight face and act like that is significant and important. After all, her feelings are significant and important to her and you are her teammate, so they are important to you also. Also, she may like to hear that other women likely feel the same way. (c) THIRD, don't take it personally (or if you do, then at least hide that for a while...save that for a future conversation). She may start off saying something stupid like, "when we go to the range, you make me feel…" or "you always…" or "your concerns are stupid." These types of phrases are not necessarily attacks (despite the fact that they sound just like attack). Think of them as "My feelings are hurt, and I don't know what to do about it." Her feelings could be that she's embarrassed, or feeling inadequate, or any number of things. Give her a pass for this conversation. If she says things like this, she is probably hurting. (5) After you identify the issues, then the two of you can brainstorm ideas to try (eg for loud noises maybe double ear protection, or better ear protection, or outdoor ranges with no other shooters, etc). (5) If you teach her anything or if you practice together, maybe think of it like training a toddler to walk - perhaps don't mention that thou :) Be patient, encouraging, and gental. You could also end training/range time with a little treat, like going to get ice cream - some little date-like thing that is something she really likes. This will cap the experience with a happy memory/association. You could also, if appropriate, tell her that you know she is training for your peace of mind which you appreciate, and ask if there is any little thing you can do for her in exchange. (6) TWAW - The Well Armed Woman (mentioned in my initial comment) is nationwide. There could be a chapter near you. If she is interested, you can search for a local chapter at twawshootingchapters.org/ Hope some of this is helpful for shooting or maybe just for life in general. I learned this approach from my husband using it on me. I really appreciate this approach and his thoughtfulness.

Guy W Pacot - For me it took current pandemic and social unrest. Finally got her to the range once after 20 years. She loved shooting pistol, and wants to take a full class with instructor who helped her out. Unfortunately she’s been isolating with her elderly mother so no go for now. She’s taken the hook, so time to gently set it. Hard to be patient after all this time, but we’ll get there. Have enough FMJ for a class or two. Better for her to use it for classes than me for practice. Shooting skills are perishable, but if she’s training it will be easier to work dry fire into my routine. Not as fun, but supposedly can be more effective than live fire.

Loved this. You nailed it. Too often men overdue the info not realizing that most women don’t naturally get into the idea of shooting guns, often because they associate guns with hurting someone or someone being killed. As the Mama Bear tee (loves) implies that can change with kids when women feel they know how to safely operate a gun and also that they’re kids won’t get their hands on it. Plus the differences in strength in the size of the hands and upper arm strength can make a difference, if women are not taught proper technique or with a guy that is insensitive to that. I really would love to see you add more videos for helping women, maybe Mrs. Poet would join 😁 Keep up the great work, you’re doing an awesome job!

I only joined him when my "mama bear" sensibilities were aroused. I bought a handgun and got my concealed carry license and have never looked back. I love telling other women and give them opportunities to shoot with my hand guns - starting with a good old .22 and working up. Now I'm sorry I didn't join my husband sooner.

Somehow I missed this video. Glad to see you wife involved and having fun. My wife of 30+ years is also involved in firearms and typically watches your videos with me. We are both retired, gray haired, arthritic, wear bifocals and both enjoy shooting. She also has her License to Carry here in Texas and we hit the range fairly often. We especially enjoy your content, manner of presenting material, and your ethos. Keep up the good work!

She's right, I tried your way initially and it didn't work lol. I at least got my wife to pepper spray me and consistently carry that. Now she carries her 43 just about everywhere she goes.

How did you get your wife to pepper spray you? I managed to get mine into guns but she still refuses to “hurt” me with the pepper spray and I want her to feel comfortable spraying/shooting an attacker if that is ever needed.

Lol! There was no "getting my spouse into shooting..." She was in the U.S. Army, and she's often said she's had enough... That BEING said, she *is* a good shot, she's no stranger to firearms, and with all the stupid Marxists on the streets of Democrat cities burning everything in sight, and then popping up on roadways with the randomness of spazzed out A.D.D. sufferers, *she did just recently purchase a new Smith EZ 9mm!* 🔴(Btw, I'd like to pause here for a sec to give a "shout out" to BLM/ANTIFA!) ~ *THANK YOU [SO] MUCH, BLM/ANTIFA, FOR RE-KINDLING MY WIFE'S INTEREST IN SELF-DEFENSE & HANDGUNS! SHE EVEN LIKES SHARP, TACTICAL KNIVES, TOO!* *MUCH OBLIGED!* 🖒😎 Now, if I can only get her to carry the extra magazine with it... lol!
