My now husband is only man who responded with, "Wow, that's really cool. I've never shot ____, but I'd love to. We should go shooting sometimes. I'll bring my stuff over." He was a God-fearing wonderful man who loved guns, came from a good family and was a romantic. My dad, mom, and I were smitten. Blessed doesn't even begin to cover it. 4 years together, 2 years married, and a lifetime to go. The couple who shoots and prays together=💪💪

LegallyBrunette and Beautiful when I picked up my wife for our first date her dad had 20 guns laid out on the living room floor for “cleaning”. I paid no attention to it because I thought it was normal lol she brought it up years later and it still makes me laugh because I love her dad so much, and he respects me so much, I can’t comprehend him trying to intimidate me like that. We shoot every time we get together, guaranteed! And I’ve taught his daughter how to defend herself and our son. 10 years later, we’re the closest family.

Most people are the products of their parents' upbringing, and still maintain valuable relationships with their parents. By extension, spouses ought to show respect and appreciation for each other's parents. It is a rare person who can be financially independent enough to completely forsake parental support in a relationship. And if you need financial help, then you owe it to them to allow some input and advice. It's only fair to them. And sleeping around will never lead to finding love. Eros and amor are related, but distinct, objectives in life. If you want love, you need to work toward that. If you want good sex, then work toward that. But don't confuse the two.

My wife had no experience shooting before me! luckily, I was able to train her a bit! Now she loves shooting, except for the 12 gauge. First trip out, she was dinging metal at 800 yards w my savage 308! My ruger 556 is her favorite tho...and basically she took it over! It’s funny, I plink w a scoped marlin 22...while she outshoots me w the 556! My 8 yr old daughter can take a pile of rim fires, load the mag and that same scoped marlin and ding metal at 75yrds!! Great advice. I'm wearing my Glock 19 in a neoprene belly band as I sit here typing. I work from home now and so mostly wear sweat pants; a regular holster WILL NOT work. I got into shooting and carrying after two murders within 1/2 miles from our home within 9 months. We live in a safe little town -- ha! there's no place safe anymore -- and I realized I had to take charge of my safety and my family's safety. (Husband and dogs, but I'm the one with the killer instinct. He's great on rifle, nothing with a handgun. We work well together!)

Nancy, I work from home, too and I definitely understand about a regular holster. I usually get some funny looks from guys when they find out I'm carrying a Canik TP9 SFX in Appendix. Btw, I'm NOT a big woman. I'm all of 5'4" and somewhere between 120-140 pounds. But, I've gotten creative with dressing so I still look feminine, but I'm also able to disguise my Canik. I've added a CZ 75D Compact to my life. My rule of thumb, if it isn't On me, it's Not loaded. That way, if someone grabs a gun that is laying out (no children in the house), I know there's no ammo in it, so I have 1-2 seconds to determine if I can talk them into laying it back down.

For those of you wondering how to get your partner to start taking responsibility for their safety, I started out by dropping scenarios on her without warning when you both have the time to discuss it. I started with us both in the bedroom and said “ There is a fire and I’m not here, what do you do?” It surprised her but got her thinking. Once she told me her plan I didn’t say she was wrong I asked more probing questions. “What if our daughter is home but she is down stairs?” “What if the fire is blocking any escape from the front of the house?” “ How could you get over the side or back fences?” Then one night we were getting ready for bed and I hit her with “ I’m not home and your in bed and someone starts pounding on the door, what do you do? “ She responds with “ I call he police and lock the bedroom door.” A couple of days later my wife and I see a local police officer grabbing a sports drink at a local convenience store. I thank him for his work in the community and during our conversation I mention the street we live on and ask him what the average response time would be to our house. 8-10 minutes if there isn’t a car in the area he says. When we got back in the car to leave I asked my wife if she thought that the front door and the bedroom door would keep a determined attacker out for 8-10 minutes. You could see the light go off in her head. “ No! Maybe 1-2 minutes “ she said. I told her it was her duty to keep herself and our daughter safe if I’m not there. From there we went to her asking for pepper spray. Then a stun gun. Then, one day after watching a segment on the local news about a viscous attack she turned to me and said the magic words. “ Honey, I think I want to learn how to use our guns”.

Wow. God bless husbands like you. Way to go. As a woman I'm reminded that I got interested in pepper spray long before I got interested in guns. Then I learned that pep spray is basically useless if your attacker has a gun. That was when I started to realize there was no way around it. The biggest thing that made me hesitate at the time (aside from a misunderstanding of the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill") was not knowing anything about gun safety habits.

This is so applicable!!! I was roofing a house in a nice neighborhood in Milwaukee ($380,000 home) when I saw the neighbor of the house behind us crying and talking to a guy with a clipboard. When she saw me she came over and asked me (she was hysterical) if I had seen anything. Turns out a guy jumped through her kitchen window at 11:30 in the morning! She was home alone and he robbed the house while she watched. I thank God she wasn't harmed in any way, and that the police were tracking this career criminal's car and staked out this particular robbery (they caught him right after it happened). This altercation wasn't violent, but just think of the potential! It was a nice neighborhood in broad daylight and she was alone. Ladies, get trained!

You guys are spot on regarding indoor firing. I took my wife to an indoor range during a slow time of day. We were given Lane 2, with a .380 Sig. Wife was extremely nervous and apprehensive. Started warming up after a magazine. Guess who got Lane 1? Mr. .357 showing off to girlfriend on how fast the pistol shoots. Not only am I back to square 1, I haven't even unpacked the board game. Wife wants nothing to do with pistols, however, does not keep me from going to the range. I'll ask her to view this video and maybe I can get her to an outdoor range with a .22. Fantastic video and didn't seem to be 24+ minutes long.

Now it's a different take on this, One nite I was going to school an a gang of young men tryed to break in cause they knew she was home alone, she met them at the back door w/ my .357 in hand an sent them pileing out the gate of the patio, she had never shot a pistol before an had never shot mine, NOW she shoots way better than me an went thru many pistol class's an has CWP an her own pistola's, God help the idiot that mess's with her now.

My first time shooting was an indoor range with 9mm Glock and SW on lane 2 with guys shooting bazooka like firearms on lane 1. After 3 shots I was shaking and holding back tears. But I hit the target on my first try! My competitive nature kicked in and I started to enjoy it. I was so pumped at conquering that first step I couldn't wait to go back. Third visit, lane 2 again, with high powered rifle on lane 1 and shotguns on lane 3. The concussion hurt my head so bad I asked to move lanes. Can't wait for warmer weather so we can shoot outside!!!

Great points. Years back I got my GF into self protection and shooting and got her in some training classes too. Started her off on a Walther P22 .22 and she liked it. She learned the basics of safety, stance and target acquisition via that Walther. Then we moved to a Ruger LCP .38 with low recoil rounds. She fell in love with that one due to the simplicity of reloading and cleaning. Then on to some standard and +P rounds. She hung in there but when she fired my PX4 Storm 9mm she was like....owww, no not this one. She stuck with the .38 and is fully comfortable. She is still improving.

My young wife, was similar to this young woman. HS and college, was basically oblivious to the potential dangers around her. Children (and my cajoling) were an influence to her eventually carrying. The "Mama Bear" instinct had more to do with it in hindsight. Excellent video on a neglected topic. Always a great idea to lead instead of push. Outdoor range instead of indoor = great advice for ALL novice shooters. Heck, I would always choose outdoor over indoor if all other things are equal. For novices, this is 10X more important. My wife and I have been together since 1994. When we met, she was an industrial artist, card-carrying member of Green Peace and Amnesty International. She had shot air guns in school PE in growing up in Europe, and enjoyed that. I was just off active duty and carried daily, active hunter, etc. So our first date was to an outdoor shooting range to familiarize her with MY pistols. I figured we should just address this head-on, right up front, and see how it goes. She had fun. I had fun. We kept dating and got married about 9 months later. But I owned all the guns and she never went hunting with me. She would go to the range now and then. A couple years later, we moved home to TX. My best friend growing up was just out of NAVSPECWAR. He asked us to go shooting at his family farm. We went. My wife out-shot both of us with his Cold Anaconda (which he was given by Dick Marchinko). OK...we actually fudged that just a tad on purpose, but it shot her confidence and enthusiasm through the roof. Mission accomplished! A secret he took to his grave several years later. I went full-time into the shooting biz about 4 years later. She began opting in to practice sessions when I was doing 1-1 coaching for clients. She'd run traps, set targets, etc. and they would inevitably invite her to shoot. Then 9-11 happened. She joined the Army, chose MP as an MOS, and went to war. She was pretty severely injured, and became an academy instructor for the rest of her time in the Army. Upon medical retirement, she got her carry permit and became an NRA RSO. She bought her first personal pistol on active duty. She bought an AR when she retired. Now she tells me when we're getting low on ammo, buys med supplies when they're on sale, and stocks emergency food supply without prompting from me. We had a range date at the local indoor range on Friday. It's a regular thing we do now. She asks me to take her. Yes, we have immediate action drills, code words, etc. Make it THEIR idea. Allow time and space for their motivation to grow. It's not a sprint. It's a marathon. And some is way better than none!

Just be in good physical shape and ready and willing to learn. The Army will teach you the initial skills in Basic Training then when you go to your unit, they'll teach you how they do things. You don't have to try to be a 'weapons master' when you go in. The Army will teach you their way of doing that.

I just got my wife to the "figuring the pistol that works for you and working that pistol" part and we've been on the gun journey for a couple years and she's almost ready for Concealed Carry. I appreciate you sharing the bit about wives being less susceptible to learning from their husbands because I thought I was doing something wrong. And I can say from experience, Instagram is a great platform for outside input for your spouses targets. A company gave my wife pointers on her page (the exact ones I said but what do I know) and she was so excited to hear she did well, the next range sessions she was all about improving those techniques like anticipation and trigger control. Good shit and as always, awesome information. WPS✊

I didn't grow up with guns the most we had was a .22 for snakes....So when I started dating my husband who had a gun in him at all times I was nervous to say the least ... But he taught me how to shoot and gun safety ..and now here we are almost 14 years later and I too carry a gun when ever I go ! And every chance I get I try to educate women on carrying and self defense and how vital it is to know how to shoot and carrying ! Thank you both for this video ! And hopefully we have more like this on a regular basis !!

Great video! I’m former SF (18E/18B) and eventually eased my wife into wanting to learn to protect herself. She went with me to the range, rented a few pistols to see what she’d be comfortable with, and settled into a full size 1911 in 9mm. This was without any suggestions from me except for the caliber. Over the years, I’ve continued training and found ITTS (Scott Reitz & Brett McQueen) just outside of L.A. An excellent training facility with top-notch instructors. So, my wife went there for a one-day All Women’s course, then returned a few months later for the 2-day Handgun l Course. This all started about 5-6 years ago and she’s still quite enthusiastic about shooting and handling handguns. Since we live in this ridiculous state (CA), there’s no way to get a CCW, but she at least knows what to do should our home be invaded by a bad guy. One of the best side notes is that all of this has made her very aware of her surroundings when not at home. One last thing: We’ll be moving to Texas during the next two years and we’ll both be able to carry! I loved this video..........the more women watch it, the better off they’ll be. It's annoying, CA is like NY, in that the county you live in matters so much for getting a carry permit. In one county, only politically-connected people can get a permit, in another county the sheriff is doling them out to anyone that passes the BI, connected or not.

Spot on! EVERYTHING here is 100% accurate and it makes me smile. Keeping it short and fun is essential. Outside better than inside. Not too much instruction. Sharing a little of my own two cents... My wife doesn't take much instruction from me well, a little is ok. Plan on time for make up and hair to go to the range, this can be the time you get gear ready to go and in the truck. Allow her to get "TactiCUTE" before hand. Also, get her her own ear pro, and don't skimp, get electronic so she can hear you talk to her. Encourage and get excited. Keep targets close, especially at first or if she's having a tough time to build confidence. A long gun mixed in will help her mow down targets and keep it fun. Took a couple of years and now she has her own pistol and is interested in taking classes. Thumbs up you two, as usual.

Anyway, vids like this further reinforce that you are one of the very few who actually knows what you're talking about. One of the problems that husbands have is that we often times wanna teach our wives something the way we were taught by our fathers (that could be good or bad) or they way we were taught by our coaches/instructors in our lives (again, good or bad). Also the unfortunate thing is that there are a lot of guys who think they know everything and they actually are way off on much of what they do so when that type of husband tries to really teach a technique to their wife, they're teaching whatever bad habits they picked up. Keep it safe and fun with the spouse and let the actual instructor do his or her job when that time comes.

Good points! I have a rule I got from listening to wise old married men and has proven true over decades in my own experience: don't try to "teach" your own wife! When mine asked to learn to fly fish, I sent her to 3 different courses ranging from 2-6 days long from professionals I highly respected and knew taught the same basis of technique that I do. Yes, I was teaching fly fishing a LOT in those days. Only once she had been through these 3 ladies' courses would I take her fishing or try to help her improve skills. Know why? Because now I was REINFORCING what she had learned from others. Familiarity breeds contempt! No matter how big of an "expert" or "pro" you may be, they see you at your WORST. They KNOW you screw up. They will doubt your authority on the subject at hand even if you are the KING DING DONG of what you do. Send them to YOUR teachers. Save your marriage and your ego the beating! Then...and only then...will it be awesome to share your passion with your spouse. That's sort of the flip-side of the coin you posted.

My husband didn’t. After a life event that required us to be situational aware, we started to party (in John’s words). First firearm purchase we came home with 4!!! Less common, maybe. Strange? I don't think so. Everybody makes big decisions like that at their own pace. My mother has always been more decisive than my father, who always takes his time to think things through very carefully. I carry even though neither of my parents do or probably ever will. If they were so inclined or felt threatened enough, I think my Mom would be quicker to take to the lifestyle than my Dad. Or it's possible that your Mom felt more vulnerable in today's world to being targeted, and wanted that force multiplier to level the playing field. A lot of times guys don't feel that same vulnerability.There's also a lot of guys that walk around with the mindset that because they're tough or big or work out a lot they they can just deal with any problem that comes their way, but that's a whole other problem in and of itself.

My wife recently acquired a S&W Shield 380 EZ. She loves it. Easy to rack the slide, easy to shoot. I know, .380 not 9mm. It works for her. She is now excited about taking a concealed carry class and getting her license. We are lucky that we can shoot on our property. With the new pistol she is actually asking to shoot.

Paul Patriot Thanks for the encouragement. John has a good point though. Training your significant other can be difficult, even if you do it professionally. Getting her to carry or get in the habit of always having it close by and ready is a struggle too. She laughs it off like it’s not a big deal, but just the other day she was nearly caught in the crossfire of a gang related shooting and her gun was at home in the dresser because she had forgotten to take it with her.
