Should we shoot photos and videos on celluloid film, now that we have great digital cameras with spectacular resolution and low-light capabilities for next to nothing?
To try and find out, after 15 years of shooting exclusively digital, I get myself a huge beast of a camera, a bag of film and head over to one of the prettiest islands in the Croatian archipelago.

The thing I love most about shooting with the 67 is that I am forced to slow down and really think about my composition, really think about the light. Then meter the shot, wind the film, frame it and when you press that shutter button, you can feel confident that you got the shot you intended to get. The process of each shot is so enjoyable, it really makes photography feel like an art form again.

„Why would anyone with a sane mind choose the next door girl/ boy when a perfect model lay at our fingertips?“ I’ve been riding a vintage speed bike since I bought it new, when it was not vintage and I have been using film cameras since about the same time as a teenager. When digital came up, I enjoyed the new possibilities - but boy, do I enjoy sitting at the pc editing „that vintage look“ or do I enjoy the process of creating real world artefact images (even if it’s painful at times and film really got expensive, quite like back in prewar times)? Is analog perfect? Nope - but is digital perfect? Nope - at least not for me, as much as I love the new possibilities… very nice and personal vid on the topic, thanks for posting!

Of all the places I've been to, the area around Split was very much to my liking. I only really started with photography when the pandemic hit. I needed a reason to go out and walk other than to get exercise and escape the four walls. So I bought a cheap used digital and immediately fell in love with photography. But the more I shot, the more I realised the look I was going for was vintage. So I bought a film camera and now I'm addicted to both digital AND film. Is film a pain in the back end? Yes. Is it expensive? Yes. Could I achieve the same results with digital- almost definitely I think. But somehow I am utterly in love with film in a way that I am not with digital. The loading, the waiting, the winding on- it's all somehow more involving and pleasurable than shooting with my Sony A7ii. Not that I will be giving that up though- my love for film may be greater but I still love the digital too. So far I have only experimented with 35mm but medium format will be next.

I had been shooting medium format film for years before I started shooting professionally. I shot weddings with three Mamiya TLR cameras and 180/80/55mm lenses. When my three wedding cameras wore out, I replaced them with two RB67 SLRs and 180/90/50mm lenses. When the digital age began, I did not stop shooting film. I still use my two RB67 cameras.

Your description at the end nailed it for me. The best things in life are worth waiting for, and when you spend time considering your framing, subject, mood and lighting, and how many shots you've got left in the can, your photos are going to be waaaay better than most digi snaps. I too love film, for many of the reasons you so wonderfully discuss in this great video. Frankly, there's a clinical look to digital images with amazing detail, but we simply don't see the world that way with our eyes. Film does a much better job (though not perfect) of mimicking what our eyes see. For many of us it's a most pleasing photo when we can imagine ourselves at that scene - hard to do that in a hyper-real digital photo. Good job with this video, enjoy the wonderful RB67, and what else is money for but to buy more film (and vintage cameras, of course)?

I love film because of how it looks and it forces me to slow down and think about my shots. What's worthy of me shooting on film? With digital I can just clink away all day and not lose a beat. But it defeats the purpose of going out and shooting. And to me, that is capturing the moment of a scene. Something special should be photographed and film forces me to look around more and think about what I want to shoot over digital. Though I can get some nice shots on digital and play with it a bit more as it costs less it's just not as fun to me as film is. Film just gives a unique look that can't be satisfied for me any other way. All the different brands and styles that can be had just by changing out a roll is something hard to recreate on digital without a lot of editing. Something I don't particularly care to do a lot of.

I started out with the RB67 as well! never had the 90 but made do with a wide/tele combo in the 65 & 180 - I also ignored the internet's advice on size and weight and even hiked through Great Sand Dunes with the beast - I will say that the Hasselblad 500CM is much nicer to hand-hold but I do miss the size of 6x7 at times, still square format is well worth trying out as it really changes how you compose an image!

for the medium format my choice is 6x4.5, negative are still pretty large, and you've got 15 shots per roll but large format 4x5 is kinda sweet stop in the realm of large formats imo, cameras aren't too big, yet you end up with huge size negatives with tons of details

Nice one Alexander :) It seems we are quite a few coming back to film again especially during or before the pandemic. Its kind of fun to see all the youtube videos dedicated to film and sharing a similar story. I liked your version a lot. well put together and i share and agree with most if not everything you say regarding film. I always had a nagging feeling of loss when i left film back i the day for digital, and while i loved some models and grew a lot from learning photography on those cameras, i felt like coming home picking up an analog film body once again. My first being the Nikon Fe2 and the Nikon F100 ( which was the last analog body i had before going digital), most likely like you i added quite a few since then, but the favorites id have to say is my Rolleiflex T75, the Nikon FM3a and my Konica Pearl 4. At least for now hehe. You got new subscriber today. keep it up :) /regards Martin the swede.

@@alexander.starbuck hehe Varsågod:D Im sure i will, i like your style of making your videos. Im SO not used to being in front of a camera ( mostly on the other side lol ), so while i wish i would be confident enough( maybe at some point) to deliver my points like you do, at this point i will make voiceovers only ;) I have tried SO many cameras as im sure you have as well, but the brands i have worked the most with would be Nikon, leica and Fuji overall. Nikon might be a bit "boring" if you compare to some other analog cameras even though looking quite classic, but they are very reliable and well made in my experience, so just feels like a safe and stabile bet when in doubt on what to shoot. The only analog leica i have used is an M4 which i regret selling. Mostly because of the built quality though, cannot really say i produced better pictures with it. Otherwise my digital M240 is a nice cameras as far as digital cameras go, and probably the most inspiring i have next to my Nikon Df. If you have any questions regarding Nikon just shoot, you should definitely try one at some point, id recommend a FM2 or FE2 or an FM3a even though they are crazy expensive these days. Have a great summer, regards Martin.

@@martinandreasson5504 Haha I had the same issue as you - camera shy and everything looked ridiculous to me, when I watched later. BUT, the greatest thing I learned through this process is, just do it. Turn on the camera, no preparations, carry it in your hands around the house, just talk stupid stuff. You dont even have to look at it later, just get used to the process and to that device, honestly. In no time it will become second nature to you, it will even become a bit boring and you will make a great presenter. trust me! FM's are wonderful, I'd love to test one! And for Leicas.... @@alexander.starbuck hehe thanks again Alexander :) You might have given me the courage to try at one point., im actually trying to compile a little "favorite film camera" list to film as a fast and fun episode , and the thought it its not going to be a lot of free filmed stuff, but just me with a mic and with webcam perhaps. Not sure how im going to shoot it as i most likely have to use the mic i have for sound. Dont have any loose mics for the other cameras right now, only for my mac. So that might be the first time i try being in front .Lets see how that goes ;) im quit a novice when it comes to sound and setup for filming etc, so the stuff i have done have been with a X-T1 and a iPhone but now upgraded at least to an external mic lol. But i will try and make it work :) and yes drewl, the M2 and M3 are such classic cameras, never had a M2 or M3, but just the M4 which i loved. Now i use the Voigtlander R2a with some leica lenses for film , its nice, but not an M ;) Have a great summer! /regards Martin.

After shooting film for some time, even when I pick my digital camera I only shoot 5-10 pics :)) It changes you, making you to value each frame, forcing you to fire that shutter only but only when you find that composition you truly like.

Excellent video and well produced. I echo previous comments. As an analogue dinosaur digital will never surpass the feel and quality of film. My 6 x 6 camera equates to 3600mp files per image, with tonal and dynamic range out of reach of the most expensive digitals. Digital has its appeal as convenient all singing all doing and captures the moment effortlessly , but wheres the creativity and sense of accomplishment. Digital misses the aura , the feel of film and the thought process that goes into each image.

Nice thoughts but only shooting few frames is not good. Film can have defects! ISO not always true. How many rolls did you use on trip? Cost of the Mamiya Brick? (I used Mamiya's in 70's for pro work.) Your lab costs? Add that All up and surely digital away better solution. Geez! You could have printed pix at small kiosks. E-mailed to family. Easily make a book! Your opinion is yours! I love small cameras, few lenses and fun. My phone becoming very important. Best luck. Let's see some images.

If you really reminisce and love the old world’s charm of old school film photography, then buy a film camera. But…the most stupid thing is to spend loads of money on high spec, over-priced, over-hyped modern DSLRs and mirrorless stuff, and the even more ridiculously priced modern, super sharp lenses,…to electronically imitate that old-school chemical-based looks😂😂😂 Humans.
@alexander.starbuck
@alexander.starbuck 6 ай бұрын
But it’s really not like that. “Dslr scanning” is only one of the finishing routes one can take. It is totally possible to have a completely analog process, start to finish (a bit more difficult for color printing in the darkroom because of the paper availability but still possible). The thing is, most of us (if not all) already own some sort of a digital camera, either for enjoyment or for professional work. Why not use it as a scanner, to share your film work? Or even as a way of expanding your printing options - you may not want to do a wet print but rather an inkjet, in which case you would need to scan the negatice. Cheers!

as a former Rover V8 , Ducati and Colnago owner its not about masochism, It's about romance. And film is the same. Unfortunately that kind of romance is expensive and that's why i now have a bus pass, a Trek and a digital camera....romance is dead, capitalism killed it.....
@alexander.starbuck
@alexander.starbuck 2 жыл бұрын
Of course it's romance 😉, I was joking a bit in the video. If I could choose, I'd only ever own Series Land rovers, Paul Smart Ducatis, vintage Piper Cub airplanes, more film cameras... In general--all the stuff made back in the day when engineers were like children, when they played and produced good, mechanical, tactile products, which weren't perfect but exuded their creator's passion. ❤
