In this video I explain exactly why beginner needle felters should start with carded wool especially if they want to make their needle felting journey a little bit easier!

This video is so helpful. I started with a kit with tops and was frustrated. Then I purchased batts. Not only cheaper, but easier and quicker. I couldn't and can't understand why more felters don't use it. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials. I am grateful.

Thank you and I totally agree, I am always talking about batts, they are so much easier and nicer to felt, thanks for watching and commenting x

Why do just about all of these kits come with tops wool😂. I got some carded wool. Looking forward to my next felting project.

I’ve been felting with tops for about two years now and never knew there was carded wool (I’m self taught), I’ve always wondered why I get so many needle marks 🤦‍♀️ and projects seem to take forever. I am now off to search for carded wool 😂❤🇩🇰

Hope you find some, World of wool online UK is excellent and I think they post to Europe but not sure how much, otherwise Etsy might have more local suppliers x

Whatever it’s called 7:01 I recently got myself core/carded/batts wool in bulk and I used it as the base/core for my current project and used my finer dyed wool over it for the color, definitely felt (lol) quicker compared to before, plus I use less of my other stuff too!

Thank you for your very informative video. I just wish I'd seen this when I first started needle felting. I assumed that shiny long combed merino fibres would look beautiful - and I got nowhere very slowly! I've just watched a Living Felt tutorial on making a 2D mushroom picture and tried with the wools I had (I'm in the UK). Not good. So I've just ordered some carded wools and fingers crossed I'll make a better job of it. Thanks again for your videos - they are really helpful.

Glad to help, merino's are lovely and useful in a different way such as long coats. Several felters do use them fine but they need carding up a bit and just take longer which I find really depressing! Hope you enjoy the carded wool xx

Ohhhhhh!! No wonder my horse took so long, I used roving! 😅 I couldn’t understand why there were so many holes, and it wouldn’t smooth no matter how much I felted. He’s about 1 1/2 x 2 ft or so, it took me a few dozen hours 🤣 I’m glad I can always go back though. Maybe I can do carded over the top!

Your videos have a wealth of information. I recently purchased some small amounts of wool to try to start out by making a toadstool or ladybug. All 4 colours are roving. I wonder why starter kits or small batches for beginners aren’t carded? I’m delighted that you show us how to card it…..I haven’t wasted my money. Thanks so much Phillipa for sharing this video with us. 💕

Yes, it's definitely usable but a quick card will really help, some needle felters are fine with it but it takes much longer x

Thanks Pippa! Always good info! I end up ordering often from Living Felt because they have a good selection and really great customer service. I enjoy her videos, too. I've been tempted to order from World of Wool, but the shipping to the states makes it hard to justify. If/when I visit the UK, exploring some of your suppliers will be on my to-do list!

Thank you so much for this, it's been such a huge help to me. I'm an absolute beginner and had almost given up before I started because I was seeing different opinions on what wool to buy to make the project I want to make. The instructions say I can use carded, tops or roving so I was baffled. I have nowhere close to me stocking needle felting supplies and none of the videos I saw up till now showed the differences so clearly.

Yes, there's lots of name difference too across different countries, carded is the word you want to see though. Etsy is pretty good for wool, are you US or Europe based or else where? X

Nice video😊 you make such beautiful things I get all my felting supplies from living felt, they have so many fun fibers,if you get a chance, you may enjoy their mc-1 ,it's a carded merino/cross batt, their site explains it better😊

What would you recommend more for wrapping around core wall - carded batts or carded slithers? Edit: when you said ‘now don't freak’ out I had to laugh 😁
@feltsbyphilippa
@feltsbyphilippa 2 жыл бұрын
If it's a larger item I do the body and head with batts, it's much quicker to get it started and the the legs are slithers as they are great for wrapping, glad you liked the video and the hand is very freaky! X

Thank you for such an informative video. A quick question...which wool would be better to add fur to animals? Like your snow hare..is it carded or merino? coz I read that merino wool gets matted soon..Im confused as to what to use for fur...thanks
@feltsbyphilippa
@feltsbyphilippa 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! So, you can definitely use merino but you just have to be careful with it, don't have your mat in contact with it and I felt it standing up (the felt, not me!). For that hare I used a more coarser wool but I'm not sure what, I didn't have it in a bag, it was possibly a Swaledale breed.......now I just went on the World of Wool site to check and I've had to order some wool! Your fault 😁! Anyway, I use mostly tops for my makes so give it a go xx

I heard you can card roving by using carding brushes, is that true? The shop I bought my wool at had lots of marino roving and I really like that texture, but the carded wool was listed much more expensive, the core wool was cheaper and carded, so I bought a bunch because I wanted to try carded wool, turns out is it is so easy to sculpt, and I wanna try carding my marino roving because I got a bunch. Is it even possible for marino roving to be carded?

Yes, here is my video on carding wool, do it gently with merino as it's quite soft x kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2fTcqalq79srMk

Nice video, but the terms are a little confused. Top (or combed top) is a preparation in which the individual fibers are aligned. Roving, batts, and sliver (pronounced sly-ver) are carded preps. It's an important distinction in handspinning.
@feltsbyphilippa
@feltsbyphilippa Жыл бұрын
Are you UK, roving can be both depending on what shop you look at and batts and slivers are the form that carded wool comes in. This is exactly how needle felters get confused. Living felt have covered this in a great video.

I'm so confused with the whole carded, tops, roving, batts, nepps situation. At the beginning of your video, when all your wool is laid out next to each other, you say on the left is carded wool and on the right is tops or roving. I thought carded wool was combed which would mean that the wool on the right was carded and the left hand side wool wasn't. Send help! 😢

Carded wool is more mixed up and tops or roving are combed (they look like hair), check out my video on wools to see more of the different types in my beginner playlist x
