Wool for felting: which wool best for felting? roving, batting, prefelt and more
Which wool is best for felting? This is a question we get all the time! People call wondering which wool is best for their felting project and would like guidance on choosing from the many types of wool we carry. Perhaps you even received some wool and wonder what it is best used for?
We also see questions about the difference between roving, batting, sliver, felt and prefelt.
Often people have received or read information that is not quite accurate. Our goal in this tutorial is to help clarify some terms and help you best choose the right type of wool and fiber for your project.
Core wool and batting are not the same thing. Roving and batting are not the same thing -- prefelt and felt are not the same thing. We hope to help you better understand your choices for wool for felting your creative projects!

How lucky am I ?? I have been a mixed media artist for 30 years but I had never even heard of felting. Last month I came across this magical 🧙‍♀️ process of stabbing loose wool fibers with a needle and it makes actual ART!!! Shabby stabby= art !!!>!🤯😲 my mind was totally blown. In a month I have made 4 cats, a chihuahua, a sleepy bunny, peppa pig, and 7 mice 🐁 for kitty toys. It is an obsession, and I came across your video this morning and it’s not even an old video it’s from last night!!! Destiny 😉

I've been going to felting classes for years .... all were with mostly world renowned European tutors. As a result I kind of missed out on most of the basics of felting (and surprise, surprise the important difference between felting and fulling !) I suppose one of the problems I have is that I go home hugely inspired and don't have time to practice and consolidate, but if I try the lack of the basics makes me give up. It doesn't help that the other members of the classes are very experienced felters, so consequently I'm slow and underconfident!! Thank you for a very enlightening video, which has pulled together what I have mostly gleaned for myself, but could never be sure was "right" !!!

I learned wet felting in a fiber class at wnmw. Self taught or as you've put it, self exploration, for needle and nuno felting. This is SO HELPFUL - thank you!! Before I knew any better, I purchased a felting kit that included what was called core roving (white), but it is so soft and the fibers seem like they are going in the same direction. It's also slippery and takes a while to felt - and shows all of the joints and seams of the folded-over pieces. The kit also included various colors CARDED Maori wool which is nice and fuzzy with fibers going every which way- it is SO MUCH EASIER to felt - and NO seams or joints showing... it creates a much more uniform texture. It's unfortunate that there are so many inconsistencies in the terminology of these products- it makes it difficult for us newbies. In any event, I will be coming to your store for future supplies!! Thank you!! :)
