Yeah, he just did it wrong. He should have started a label if that's what he wanted to do, then he could have done that. It's what dre, birdman, em, Jay, Kanye, master p all did. When you sign a deal with a label, unless you negotiate that aspect, they are going to want you to use their infrastructure, similar to how companies offer discounts for doing business with their partners. Or he could have created and produced the album with his own people and negotiated with the label for distro and marketing resources. His heart was in the right place but he just didn't understand business which doesn't work the way it does on the street where you can just drop a bag off with someone and they get back to you for the re-up. The label is also making deals to put "their" people and partners on by guaranteeing their producers and engineers a certain amount of projects and credits so you have to be cognizant of that. Like, how would you feel if you had a studio, you sign a artist, and then he come and say I don't want to use your cousin who's producing, I want to use mine? You be like "negro please" and show them the door

He had the right idea in mind. The problem is he tried to make that move too soon (and with the “wrong” peoples money) instead of truly solidifying his power first. He needed just a bit more time and important investment moves to build a stronger ground as an entrepreneur (his own money). Solidify another successful album or two, sell a plethora of OTHER products than just music, meaning master entrepreneurship. Get his own large investors to back his own label well enough to where he could do what he was doing for his family and city - his community. He’s right, we absolutely are supposed to use our success to bring the rest of our community up. He still can, study Berry Gordy of Motown. In todays global market with advanced technology that Motown didn’t have (the internet is powerful), he can still achieve his original goals. It’s just a matter of if that’s still his vision, his dream.

Technology really has played a lot in making 🌟 where there is truly little musical talent. I enjoyed Dru Hill and its success. And wonder what could have been had Spotify or other streaming direct to consumer apps removed record labels from artistic expression.

*Long Comment* I think what really killed Sisqo’s career was the rumor that was floating around that he was gay. It was in tabloids and magazines. Aries Spears even changed his impersonation of Sisqo on Mad TV from “smooth ladies-man” to an “overly flamboyant gay stereotype”. S/N: One thing that would’ve boosted his career: Sisqo was on 106 & Park talking about how he was the “Best”. Usher showed up on an episode a few weeks later and replied to Sisqo saying he was the best with: “Calm down little man”. A friendly battle between the two would’ve boosted Sisqo’s career… but the battle never happened.

Yeah but, Dru Hill was part of a wave of boy bands in the late 90s. Fun as they were, they didn't change anything. They didn't bring anything new to the table like groups before them such as New Edition or even Boyz II Men. Dru Hill was in the same category as 112, Next, Jagged Edge and groups like that. All great performers and singers FOR SURE. But it was the boy band craze. That's all. Still made great music. Still a blast at concerts and parties and it was great. But it's always fleeting. I thought Sisqo had a clothing shop in Baltimore and that's what he's doing now. Oh well.
