Over the last 20 years the amount of skate shops in North America have shrunk like crazy. In our years we've seen 3 recessions, a pandemic, the rise of the internet, explosion of smaller brands, and decline of the skate shoe.

There’s nothing better than walking into your local shop and smelling urethane and clean clothes. It’s part of life. not just for skateboarding but everything we need should be exchanged from the hands of another. That’s our heritage for hundreds of years. Now online is choking it all out. What do we do to change this? Somehow we gotta stand up and fight. If I need to use a landline/house phone and write letters to relatives then so be it. Time needs a rewind.

I get what youre saying because im part of the older generation, but to be real there are thousands of online videos explaining everything about skateboarding as far as feedback and expertise goes. I've learned far more about my setup from nine club guests compared to my local skateshop. to most people skateshops are intimidating, especially the "core" ones. skateshops are in a precarious position where they have to be on the core side yet appeal to "normies" who bring in business. we are just living in a different time right now.

Spot on ShredzShop. I had a skateshop for 3 years and sold it because there was no money to make. I had enough customers but the brands just had ridiculous demands. Brands like Vans, Dickies,... all have a minimum order for shops. And as a shop it takes longer to reorder then as a customer straight from there website. They just want to kill the skateshops(middleman). Suppurt your local so the brands feel they can't live without the local shop !

Internet research has made an impact on all kinds of shops because people spend hours researching exactly what specific thing to buy and then are disappointed if the local shop doesn't have the exact thing in the exact color they want at the cheapest price possible. In the old days we just went to the shop and bought what they had on the wall or in the display case and trusted that they only brought in the best brands.

Skteshops are the real backbone of local scenes and here locally their websites aren’t too difficult to navigate but the one thing, at least here, is availability and selection. Granted its profit loss carrying things that don’t sell but the having something other local shops don’t and being able to put your hands on it does a lot for sales. More variety in local shops would be ideal, even variety in shop decks would be appreciated. I’d totally rock a shop deck if they had the shape/style available or even in stock.
@ShredzShop7 ай бұрын
🙌Agreed, I think letting your local know what you're looking for is important too! Smaller shops are usually good at doing special orders and listening to what people want, if you let em know, hopefully they'll stock that stuff!

We opened a skate shop in a small rural town in Georgia because there is nothing even close to here. Thankfully I have another business to support overhead and the skateshop is more a labor of love. Its hard to compete with online pricing and availability. And often the profit on a purchase of $100 is only $35-40. It takes alot of sales to cover the cost of running. I feel like a lot of skate shops have to piggy back off another business to stay afloat. Around here a smoke shop or scuba shop or in my case a motorcycle shop may double as a skate shop because the skate shop can't support itself. Lil Chub Decks Fitzgerald Ga

When I was growing up, I practically lived at the local skate shop and I still buy gear from them till this day. But something I've noticed is that nowadays, many shops aren't hosting as many events as they used to. I get it - there aren't as many skate brands going on tour to do demos at the local shops, and we're seeing fewer skate videos these days. But that doesn't mean the shops shouldn't be organizing their own skate demos/events and streaming events like SLS, Dew Tour, Xgames, and hosting movie nights featuring old and new(when they do come out) skate videos. Give people a reason to come to your shop and they will.

So much amazing stuff seems to come out of Gainesville! I feel like you guys need a Rodney Mullen museum there...

@ShredzShop he deserves one man! I was happy to work there for a year or so. But the University of Florida bought up the original plot and moved the store down the street!

The problem is that zumiez has more product then most local shops which sucks cause the local shops do deserve more product and foot traffic. and the casuals and posers will always go to a zumiez no matter what, and the employee's that work there do not have any expertise and most of them don't even care, while local skateshops have the expertise and passion. Oh and shout out to Boarderline.
@ShredzShop7 ай бұрын
Love Boarderline! ❤️ I feel the opposite, if you go into Boarderline, they’ll have tons of unique brands Zumiez isn’t allowed to carry like Polar, FA, Quasi, Alltimers, Sci-Fi, where as Zumiez might have a huge board wall of warped boards from less exclusive brands. Thanks for watching ❤️👊

@@ShredzShop i run a zumiez in a town that doesn't have a local skate shop nearby and i also skate. in my store its not about putting local shops down i've begin to notice that a lot of newer skaters/ shy skaters tend to come to my store because it's just a welcoming environment, i however do find that weird because i grew up helping a local skate shop and it was also just as welcoming i honestly just think its preference, i just miss seeing people outside actually doing something and although i work in such a hated place its still nice to see the community grow.

I hate to admit I can only hit my childhood skate shop once in a while as it's an hour away. That's the closest one too. I've been skating since the 90's, I know what I like, I order it online. I know that sucks, but I do local online shops!
@ShredzShop7 ай бұрын
Hey, ordering online is rad! Lots of people from surrounding cities buy online from us and it's still money in our pocket we can use to do local events, sponsor skaters, and pay the bills!! 🙌❤

@@ShredzShop I buy from you! I just still feel bad I don’t take the trip. My kids are all skating now, 4 girls.. I put a mini ramp up this week. I think I’ll take the drive and get us all outfitted…

There was a skate shop in Dublin called Skate City that only recently closed down. I believe that the gentleman who owned it simply retired, but it had existed since the late 70s. My brother and I used to love the store back in the early 00s, and we have fond memories of skating in (and often being kicked out of) the nearby grounds of the Central Bank of Ireland. Support your local businesses always. This goes well beyond skateboarding. If you can get something from a local store, it's better to spend a few extra buck (or euros) to get it there and not from Amazon. Small businesses need to be supported.

The feeling of a shop where skaters hung out infront of the store inside a couch full of homies or strangers no one cared watching the newest skatevideo the backyard park session in full blast that is a feeling online stores can never have
