Sleep is one of the most undervalued components of our health, yet neglecting it can have devastating consequences. In this episode, I talk to world-leading sleep researcher, author of the international best-selling book ‘Why We Sleep’ and Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology, Matthew Walker. We discuss everything you ever needed to know about sleep. Matthew shares some brilliant tips to combat jet lag, explains how sleep can enhance athletic performance and decrease risk of injury and reveals just how much caffeine consumption can impact sleep. We explore the reasons behind the current global sleep-loss epidemic and how sleep deprivation can affect every aspect of our health - from our blood sugar levels and our risk of heart attack to our mental health. Finally, we discuss alcohol’s impact on sleep and the staggering financial costs associated with lost sleep. Matthew also shares what he has changed in his own life since starting his research. This is an invaluable conversation - I hope you enjoy it!
Please note: Matthew has agreed to do a follow-up podcast to answer any questions you may still have about sleep. Listen and let me know which questions you would like me to put to Matthew via my closed Facebook group (Dr Chatterjee 4 Pillar Community Tribe), where you can also discuss other podcast episodes and any lifestyle changes that you are trying to make.

"Why we Sleep" by Matthew Walker is one of the most important health books I have ever read. One thing they don't get is that if solving the sleep crisis could free up 2% of GDP, that means that the corrupt healthcare system loses billions. Health isn't profitable, and healthy people are harder to control. That is why medical school doesn't teach health, that is why this is fringe. I have so much respect for these two brilliant individuals, promoting true health.

Humans are proven in health studies to be best suited for the vegan lifestyle AKA plant-based. Some major diseases are exclusive to animal based diets. But you probably season animals, like I used to. We have mockups where you cannot tell the difference, and they'll even taste better. The pandemic was started by eating bats or by a Wuhan lab leak (which is now said to be 95% or so of certainty in this cause). Several outbreaks happen from animal agriculture. Even with this virus, scientists have warned of animal agriculture. The AMA (American Medical Association), the Physician's Committee, the largest study known as the China Study, and several other sources state that thousands of top doctors and evidence points to humans being plant-based. Even the latest science shows early ancestors were thriving on plant-based. Some worship the cow but there's a lot of recorded animal abuse there in India. They're the second largest producer of beef. Around the world, about 99% of animals come from factory farms and even regular farms tend to be pretty brutal on average, in overwhelming documentation. We've had several animal based companies go out of business, oh so thankfully. The largest and the oldest milk company in America went out of business recently after filing bankruptcy. Several milk companies have shut down. Vegan meat and vegan milk outsell their animal based counterparts when sold side by side. But only vegans in the small millions. The Canada food pyramid now has meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal products removed. The AMA is encouraging hospitals to replace processed meats and butter and such with plant-based alternatives. 75+ billion land animals are raped into the world each year, tortured, and murdered while around 1 billion humans starve a day. The main reason for pollution, droughts, and deforestation is animal agriculture. About 85% of antibiotics (which are synthetic ones that destroy good bacteria too) go to animal agriculture. Even then, plenty of cancer tumors and other things that get unchecked or barely treated before it's sent out to the public. That's while the meat literally rots as it sits around getting moved around until it's bought. Heart disease is the number one killer in America, mainly linked to animals, especially red meat. Type two diabetes is caused to humans by animal fat, officially. So on and so forth.

@@ReligionAndMaterialismDebunked You are saying that humans are meant to be vegans. That couldn't be farther from the truth. Now, looking from your standpoint, you might be justifying some emotions you have regarding animals. To begin with, you can tell by the length of our guts that we are not supposed to be relying solely on plants, our guts are not long enough. Looking at our teeth, it is obvious that we are omnivores. Humans have short canines that are a functional consequence of having an enlarged cranium and associated reduction of the size of the jaws. We also know that humans share anatomical features with those of omnivores (e.g. pigs, mice, rats, rodents, raccoons, etc.). Cattle and deer have vats, enlarged chambers where plant that are eaten can stay to be digested by microbes. However, we, as humans, lacks those vats. We are neither carnivores nor herbivores, we are simply omnivores. You can say that you want to have a certain diet due to emotional reasons, however you are certainly mistaken when you say that a plant based diet is best for humans.

Great to hear Dr Walker speak of the associative brain "your bed is neither a kitchen, nor an office, nor a cinema" "your brain gets desoriented on what a bed is about". It inspires me... And do not eat when you wake up in the night because your brain will learn that night is the time to eat. That was j.u.s.t. for me. Surely in 21st century med schools need to be incorporating both sleep & nutrition into their training. It seems unbelievable that these 2 things get virtually no time devoted to them (or the menopause I believe) so GP’s have to largely fall back on drugs. A pill for every ill. Think how much money could be saved or better used in NHS if doctors knew more about such fundamental things.

Dr. Walker please help me. After hearing in your book that routines are so important. I decided to start a routine along with my baby girl last Feb 27, 2022. I used to not have a routine ever in my life. I'm a woman in my upper 30's. After me and my 6 year old daughter started a routine I have not been able to sleep. That first week a did not sleep but 2 days out of seven. After that I start taking 50 MG trazodone and it was helping and I was getting better. Then, daylight savings came and destroyed all my progress. Now, I consistatly wake up at 2, 3 or 4 am. If I am lucking taking a trazadone can help me sleep until five. Sometimes, if I have too much stress I can sleep at all. My doctor increased the trazodone up to 300 but it did not helped with the waking up at 2. Just gave me a horrible dry mouth. I have not had a good night sleep since Feb. I feel like I'm dying. I forgot to mentioned that my little girl was/is also affected by this routine. I am camping out in another room but she wakes up to "go to the bathroom", or because she is cold, etc. A tiny bit of melatonin 0.25 MG has helped her somewhat but she still wakes up for different reasons. . Why would a routine mess my sleep and how can we fix it?? I forgot to mentioned that I don't take naps and we are trying to get more light exposure in the morning but sometimes the cold weather doesn't allow for that. Please help us Dr. Walker and Dr. Chaterjee I feel like I can't go on much longer.

Maybe just wake up early and have your decaf at 7 or 8 a.m will be the best solution. An at the workplace, after you wake up from the short break, just have some direct sunlight and does the breath holding exercises (which Dr.C also has a podcast on, #99) can help you with your focus enough for the rest of the day. I'm currently an university student, which led me to a very "strange" biological "clock" (lol, my English is not so good, hope that you can understand what I'm talking about): wake up at 10-11 a.m and *try* to sleep at 11 p.m which actually is 1-2 a.m in the morning. Because of that routine, when I wake up at the "mornoon", I feel really bad, which makes me to drink a lot of coffee after that, which now leads me to stay awake for far too long, how miserable. After listening to a lot of Dr.C and Jay Shetty podcast on health, now I'm trying to sleep and wake up earlier, using my "addiction" to cafein as a bait to trick me wake up earlier so that I can sleep like a "ideal normal person". It works like this, I told myself that: Hey, I know that if I drink coffee so late in the day, I can't sleep soon enough to feel good, and I love my coffee routine, and I don't want to continue suffer from that miserable lifestyle of me anymore (because I'm selfish and I don't want to die too soon and too painful), so I will sleep earlier, in order to wake up earlier, in order to still have my coffee and also to greatly improve my health. (long comment, hope that I can help you, just want to share my experience in case that it can help you with yours)

Decaf coffee /tea has about 4% of the caffeine of regular. If coffee has 150 mg per cup you only have 6mg at the time you drink it. How's the half life of 6 hours so 6 hours you after you drink it it's down to 3 mg and 6 hours later it's down to a milligram and a 1/2. I don't really think the decaf coffee or tea is a problem. One way you could try is to give it up entirely and see if that affects you.

Lovely podcast. My late mother, who was a licensed practising traditional Chinese medicine, told me that one of the most important factors to longevity is to sleep as early as possible. She mentioned that our organs begin to rest at 10pm. Therefore, traditional Chinese medicine has been going upstream on general health.

I love this interview, Mathew Walker's episode of JRE was one of my favorites as well. HOWEVER.. that pop filter over Matts face is driving me crazy! It[the podcast] listens really well but the visual is distracting af. I keep finding myself watching where the line crosses his face..

At around 2:40 Matthew talks about not wearing sunglasses outside for a daylight reset. I acknowledge that sunlight can cause permanent damage to the eyes over time, and I personally wear crystal clear polycarbonate glasses when outside, since that blocks most of the UV rays, but lets 100% of the sunlight through so I still have to squint, which is even healthier since squinting naturally reduces the amount of UV rays into the eyes. My question is if you can get that reset using polycabonate clear glasses, so you can maintain eye health, while also getting your circadian rhythm reset.

Dr Chatterjee, thank you for this great podcast. You seem like a very lovely and smart fellow, however, may I suggest that you practice asking shorter questions? A sign of a very good interview is the fact that the interviewer speaks very little, and the interviewed speaks a lot. Just my two constructive two cents. :)

Agreed, the body language says it all. The guest seemed uncomfortable a lot of the time and barely got to speak at all. If it was a guest at dinner they would probably make an excuse to leave early. I'm sure there was no malice or ill intent at all but if you are interviewing someone you need to let them talk and make it about them.

My goodness that doesn't sound healthy or balanced you deserve better. If you're having gut issues start drinking bone broth daily. I have IBS and in 1 week time I'm seeing results. I also cut out coffee because I'm serious about having better health when I get older. Stop all coffee and drink bone broth to heal your gut. Coffee does so much to women's hormones and blocks absorption of minerals. Bone broth has a ton of nutrients and glycine to help improve sleep. Just think of what your grandmother made in a slow cooker and get back to ancestral traditions. Also I use red lights and red light bulbs at night to eliminate blue light which blocks melatonin. If you wear glasses you can find clip on lenses to block blue light at night before bed. They sell on Amazon. Good luck. Don't stop seeking better health. If you can heal your gut and get sleep your hormones might improve way more needing extra medications. God bless 🙌

I'm a big fan of Matthew Walker and his works. But I noticed that he quotes a study giving participants 200mg of caffeine and calls it "a standard cup of coffee". Wouldn't this be more like half a litre? Not saying that it majorly changes the results or that people do not drink that much (many do) but do I have a massive misconception about caffeine content or is this just an error or simplification?

How do the 1% of "short sleepers" fit into this and are these parameters relevant to this population? Or do you think the "short sleeper" anomaly is not legitimately a reduced sleep requirement?

Natural short sleepers must show that there is no physiological harm being done to them with 4 hr sleep Linda. They do fine! They are the outliers of course but they could get pretty bored trying to fill that much time each day with things to do.

We must reduce our caffeine: caffeine reset for a week, try decafe, don't drink after 12 8 hours sleep extremely important ( non negotiable) Mental health crisis is coinciding with Sleep crisis One night of only 4 hours sleep has prevailing bad effects for longer then a week Alcohol as a sleep aid is terrible, it is a sedative not a sleep aid Losing weight and building muscle begins with getting a good night sleep you are 40% more susceptible to virus' when you are sleep deprived Sleep tips: Keep bedroom cool Wake up at the same time Lights off for 1 hour before sleep Use artificial light exposure to fix jet lagg If not sleeping in bed, get out for a bit Quote: "children need a sleep routine, why don't we?

Aren't there any KZbin rules that prohibit a Brit from interviewing another Brit? Were poor sleep really killing humans then how do we explain the population explosion and the doubling of the lifespan? Something stronger is negating the harm of sleep loss is causing so in the sum we are bit ahead but that is about to stop now as lifespan shrinks. Sleep alone wont halt this, We have overlived ourselves a bit.
