In fact, starting from gen 6, even-numbered gens should be mega evolutions, and odd-numbered gens should be a battle modifier of some sort (gen 5: triple battles & reversed weakness/resists, gen 7: z-move, gen 9: terrastalization).

Gen 7 feels like the last TRUE generation. Where you can use any Pokemon and any move. Megas and Z moves were allowed. Ever since then GameFreak culled the product. It's still good, just not as great.

Blunder spittin facts as always. I don't know anyone who doesn't miss megas. Gen 5 has a special place in my heart, but it's too dominated by infinite weather and drag mag. Gen 6 is good but suffers a bit overall from being too bulky. Many also see gen 4 with rose tinted lenses, but not being able to see the enemy team is shit and less skillful imo. Gen 9 is ass because tera ruins the fundamental pokemon formula. Like I don't mind STAB tera just to wall break, but tera blast and defensive teras (like poison on levitate mons 🤢) is just unholy. Gen 8 I barely played but even after dynamax got banned I can't imagine it beats Gen 7. 7 meta was peak on god, fuck flipturn, fuck corviknight, fuck booster energy. Heavy duty boots I don't necessarily hate but fuck no mons having defog. I said enough.
