We need to have a conversation about how and when video games become sports. Meaning in the way that nobody owns tennis or soccer or boxing. Nobody has the right to own melee. Certainly not Nintendo.

Not comparable. Thats one of the reasons why they aren't sports, they are esports. Played only with the permission of the IP holder because they do in fact own them, and they are the only ones with a right to own them. Its just not like a physical, irl sport. All I need to play football is a few mates, a vaguely spherical object, and 4 other miscellaneous objects to make goalposts with. To play a video game I need a console or pc, a controller of some sort, a monitor, and the game itself. And the only way to purchase them is by agreeing to the terms and conditions of these companies, at which point you have already agreed to them owning melee.
