Sharks have no hands. So biting is the only way to check, especially in murky water what it is. So basically a bite to sample a potential food source.

I see sharks in that area all the time. No joke. But I have never seen anyone attacked.

When you think about it, and how many people swim in the oceans around the world each day, its amazing more people are not attacked. Really the number of bites is really low compared to how many people swim each year.
