They said accents don’t matter as long as you try your best. Just don’t be shy. I like how it’s not even a bilingual skl but the students THEMSELVES are tryna make it bilingual 😂😂❤️

Yeah in Thailand they focusing on grammar just like for the exam, remembering and answering, but not practical, so you can easily found that when the foreigner(s) ask something to some people, I would say that around or almost 50% of them would say something like “I don’t speak English” to avoid communicating with them. Lately we had a drama about Thai teacher’s requirement(s) I think for the government school, that most of the english teacher said that the minimum score around 400 of TOEIC is TOO MUCH some of them requested for around 200 , but i honestly think that they should get over 600.

I’m Thai and I wanna say that all things you’re talking about the English efficiency of Thai people, are correct. I think that the environment of Thai everyday life is not support for example Whom we can make an English conversation with? Accept someone who try so hard to seek some foreigner to speak with or come aboard to study in England or US. I had ever talk to the young American man who came to Thailand to try to learn to speak Thai. He said that why I didn’t come to the US to practice just like him who came aboard to the country that use this language everyday. I said I didn’t have enough budget to do that just like almost Thai people be. In every day life I can’t speak English as well but only read and write from my experience.

As a Thai, I would also add that there is a culture of “shaming” and being self-conscious. People are conscious of what others think about them while having peers who love to laugh and make fun of how they talk. I find the same culture in the Philippines. Most Filipinos outside big cities are shy to speak English to me even though they can because they are afraid of shaming. I also find it hard to learn Tagalog myself because of the same issue of being laughed at for my accent or wrong grammar.

Thank you. You hit it right on the head. I have pretty much similar thought on this subject. Learning English in Thailand is like learning to drive a car by getting the person to learn all the theory and science of the internal combustion engine and to memorise all the names of the various parts of the engine and gearbox and, after passing exams on those subjects, it is expected that the person would be able to drive a car, even though the person would have never sat behind a steering wheel and ACTUALLY driven a car before.

In the USA, this is a similar issue. I have studied Spanish for 6 years between High School and University. I was very motivated to learn but out of the 12 or so teachers I had, only 2-3 of them forced us to constantly speak in Spanish and chose assignments that were practical. In essence, certainly in the early stages, if you learn something and practice saying to someone in an every day situation, it isn't much use. I remembered obscure vocabulary but did not how to say, "I know what you mean" or something useful might use everyday. I've been studying Thai for the last two years and I try to avoid those same mistakes. Also finding a Thai tutor that I can speak with a few hours a week to get honest/often hard but necessary feedback has made a monumental difference in a short amount of time.

This is a very interesting video. I am a Thai citizen who just graduated from an American high school recently. One of the most important issue on learning English is that most people are afraid or shy to speak in front of other people. Another issue is that they kept thinking about grammar structure while speaking which makes it harder to learn. It is really sad to hear that our English learning rank has become worse than before, but I believed that everyone in Thailand is trying the best they could to learn. I really support this video and will post this on social media!

Most Thais are naturally shy but most of all, their English was taught by Thai teachers, whose first language is almost always Thai. It would be nearly impossible for an average Thai to speak English without any discomfort, but I have noticed that most University students can write and read English fairly well. All Thais are pleased that someone who didn't grow up speaking Thai manages to learn and speak to them in Thai.

Yes, that came be a problem. Were as I learnt German in school, my German teacher was a German National. I then continued taking further lessons in evening classes at the my local college where woman teaching German was again a German National. When I learnt to speak Punjabi as a child I learnt from a native Punjabi speaker and spent many hours in her home with her extend family.

That's funny. The Thais never struck me as being that bad at English. Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines really use English so that wouldn't be comparing apples to apples. They're ahead of Laos at least. About the same as Cambodia. Vietnam has really amazed me. I first went there in 99 or 2000 and only a tiny handful of people in the practically nonexistent tourism industry at that time spoke English. Japan on the other hand has stayed stuck at the same level since maybe the '80s. Korea has improved, Chinese has improved a lot. Taiwan is awesome. But I'm a bad judge because I like the language barrier and want to learn a bit of the local language. Thais only need English for two things anyway, for tourism, and for doing international business to get rich, which is why some of the homework stuff was boring businessy stuff. Well that goes for every country I suppose.

That feels more like a copout to me. If that were the case learning Japanese would be extremely difficult for English speakers as English is SVO and Japanese is SOV. But either way language structure has very little do with with actual language acquisition.

It's just awesome to ask if they've fish curry, buy some, say thanks. And the next time there's something deep in you that remembers, because it's lodged in that actual usage. I asked a kid in 2014 in Bangkok where the skytrain station was, and gave him lee-ow sai, lee-ow kwa and trong pai as options, and he showed me. Again, that just lodges it in your being.

Paddy, a great video! Thank you! However I feel you don’t scratch the surface of the issues in education enough. There is a fundamental issue in the education system structure that prefers native English speakers as TEFL as opposed to qualified English speakers from outside native countries. There is also the issue of native teachers who teach English, not having the ability to speak English... a conundrum more prominent in areas outside of BKk. Confidence is also an issue, especially in an education system based on rote learning over discovery and critical thinking. Thailand suffers because the education system rebates teachers to a level where asking a question implies inadequacy in the teaching method.. therefore students do not question the word of the teacher in fear of being caught on the wrong side.

Verbs, adjectives, popular phrases, days, numbers and the alphabet is the fastest path to a language. The ability to describe and ask the name of a thing is much better than only knowing the name of a thing.

English education system in Thailand is mess up. I’m Thai myself, learning English from my schools since 5 years old until 23 yo, still can’t speak English. After I graduated and worked in a hotel where English is important and I got to use it everyday, that’s when I actually speak English. I tried hard to learn English, because I really wanted to be fluent. I watched shows and films in English, listen English music. Learning by myself and also from foreigner friends. 3 years later I’m fluent. If you really want to be good at languages you have to start working hard on it and stop finding an excuses. I know it’s hard, but you’ll never go anywhere if you don’t start. First start from listening, speaking, reading, writing. This is a natural way human learn language. Just think of an infant baby.. listening is the first thing they learn. When you do things against nature, it’s unnatural and it’ll be impossible.

Great to hear that you are finally able to communicate in English! I was hired as an English teacher in a small village high school in Thailand a few years ago, and I was asked to teach 'speaking'. I wanted to get a conversation going so I said; 'I like cats'. The students said 'NO!'. They thought I was asking a question! Grades 10, 11 and 12 were equally bad at English, so I went back to the basics. When grades 11 and 12 found out that I was teaching the exact same 'basics' that I was teaching grade 10, they got angry. I was instructed by the school to make it 'more difficult' for the higher grades, even though they had a hard time with the 'basics'. I feel that one of the reasons that nobody learns anything is that the students just keep getting pushed along the English courses in school, without ever having learned much and they keep giving them passing grades and moving them on because they don't want to be embarrassed. It is sad that after many years of English 'study' students in Thailand have almost zero English skills.

This is such an interesting video. We love Thailand and never really encountered people who couldn't speak any English. It's very possible that we stayed near the more touristy areas, but I feel that the Thai people are also a very proud people and you can see it in everyday of their lives. We hope to learn more Thai one day, but there are so many languages we want to cover. Also, ENGLISH is very crazy in a language on its own. There are so many way people speak that is generally not grammatically correct or they have evolved the language to use words that could have multiple meaning or switching words that are generally more conversational. Great video Paddy! We love you

G'day Gregory, I just tried this on the missus & kids to see if they would understand....bear in mind my translation is nowhere as good as what Paddy's would be even though I have been learning Thai for over 35 years! First I talked about lockdown Then I said: เเบปนี้คือการจ้ะขับผมบ้าน้าครับ Baap nee kid garn ja kub phom bah na krub this got a mixed review....half understood I think Then I dropped the driving reference เเบปนี่ทำให้ผมบ้าน้าครับ Baap nee tum hai phom bah na krub Then totally understood....yay

Add a comma might help. Try saying "driving me, nuts!" Come to think of it, you didn't mean to say "driving my nuts", right? That would be really hard to put in Thai words. 😏

I'm Thai and before i was in Bangkok and that school had English teachers and Thai teachers that ever taught me about accent before i think it was fun to learn. But when i was 12(I'm 13 now)i moved school and it was in Angthong(i didn't want to say bad thing about all of schools in Angthong) i regretted it i thought that this school wasn't bad at all and if i can't make friends i still have my sisters to go eat lunch with me. But i think i made the wrong decision. The students were naughty and didn't listen to teachers.I thought i could learn with English teacher but no i only learn with Thai teacher. I was like my heart's breaking. I know every type about the students in that school and i know why my sisters bad at English. It's not like that Thai teacher bad or something. It because of students didn't like English and not gonna learn about it. Now my English was dropped but i finally passed it. I learned in that school for 1 year. And now i moved school but it was in Angthong. But this time i can learn with Thai and English teachers. Now i think i didn't regret it.But too much homeworks ;~;. I kept that school for my experience of my life.(And sorry for the bad grammar or spelling) Again sorry if i was just like talking some bad things about the school.

As a Thai here's the reasons : - Some teachers spell wrong accent or pronoun and the education more focus on grammar than conversation. - If student (in some cases) speak wrong accent , vocabulary or pronoun they will get teased by classmate or maybe get punished by teacher. - In some Asian countries culture and society don't want to make the people being difference or confidence by seniority system it's one of the reason that can be a hard thing to learn English because its must being confidence to speak and many Asian people seem low self esteem to spend their life to do something. - Thai education index ranks relatively low because the education system don't give a freedom choice to student to choose their interested subject to learn and they can't avoid some subject that not indispensable likes scout , swimming , dancing art , etc. If they don't attend the class they will not get passed I think these subjects should be optional likes USA , Europe , Japan that these countries had much better education system than Thailand. It's not that good things.

Paddy, I was an English teacher in France for 2 years. I am conflicted about the French system. 🤔On 1 hand, I love that English is a mandatory subject starting in 6th grade (age 11) and up, so if you study you’ll achieve basic fluency by graduation at 18. On the other hand, because it was mandatory, it made it feel forced and unliked by at least half of my students (ages 15-18). Edit: Yeah, at my French high school they offered: English, German, Spanish, Italian, and Corsican. I too had kids learning up to 2-3 foreign languages including their native French!

It’s always a bit of conflict! I guess trying to make it fun whilst also being mandatory is always going to be a bit of a challenge!

Thai's just don't use English outside of various areas to communicate. Unlike the other countries you mentioned. Which use English almost more than thier native language for everything, except in private conversations and with family. For Thai's English is just that a second or third language. Many can understand Chinese and Filipino and pick up it as an additional language. But dialect is very different in Thai. Northern Thai, southern, central, mix in some Laotian.... and oddly as it seems to use. English is a very difficult language to learn. A lot of slang, a lot of mixed meanings like in your example. Then you add in your Australian, and you also have English people from the UK,, Canadian people, American people, just to name a few... who speak English and it's their native language yet each is completely different bloody hell mate by golly I don't know how y'all can't seem to fully understand and comprehend how to simply order a hamburger.....

I taught myself Thai some time back and your point that languages are taught in an impractical way is quite true. I remember watching videos of Thai's teaching English to Thai's and the students are bombarded with an enormous amount of formal grammar concepts. I can tell you now very few native English speakers understand what those grammar terms mean. I went to Thailand a couple of times (about 8 years ago) and I there were people who spoke excellent English, not just people that work in the hospitality industry either. I was really impressed. By the same token some of the younger people I met, who obviously learnt English at school, only knew a few words. From my own language learning experience I found watching movies and TV programs an excellent way to find common words and phrases. The only problem is you have to spend a lot of time trying to understand what is being said and then translate the meaning.
