Why Software Engineers LIE On YOUTUBE? (Real Junior Life)

In this video I vent a bit of frustration on what it's like to be a junior software engineer, and why I think youtubers lie a bit and don't share how vunerable they are at times. The real struggles and what it's really like to code. Too many people want to break in for the salary and more people need to know what it's really like so if I'm known for one thing when it's all said and done I'd be super proud to know that I was known for keeping it REAL!

Welcome to tech bro. Nothing but trial by fire. A ton of people were hype on tech when it was hot. They didn't know it was like this. But stay strong everyone, eventually the ones who aren't built for this will be weeded out and then by that time, we will be able to look back and see how far we've come.

Remember guys, Multi-Authentication is not designed to be MULTIPLE WAYS, but Multiple CATEGORIES. What do I mean? A PIN and a Password would be MULTIPLE WAYS... but both are 'something you know'. You need AT LEAST 2 out of 3 from "something you know", "something you have" and "something you are" to be true Multi-Authentication. Like a PIN, and a Keycard (know, have) or a Password and a Retina Scan (know, are), or a Keycard and a Thumbprint (have, are). (And yes, I understand a Personal Identification Number is a Sub-Category of a Password that uses only Numeric... but they are still different, hence the Sub-Category. We don't call the 4 Digits you input your Password, after all... it's your PIN.)

You remind me of when I was learning to code during the lockdown. Having flashbacks right now. It is one of the most difficult skills you can learn cause you have to change the way you think. Telling computers what to do and handling edge cases is crazy if you think about it and don’t even get me started on debugging lol You’re gonna make it cause you have what it takes. You’re built different. And please make a video on your old life. It sounds interesting.

I feel your frustration. One of the problems these days is people are being told they can get a high paying job from a 6 month bootcamp or something similar. It is extremely frustrating to work against that expectation. Just relax and enjoy the process of learning a new skill. It takes about 5 - 10 years before it feels second nature. No need to rush. @@lionelthebuilder I'm a hardware engineer so my work is a little different, I been in the industry for chip design, 7 years already and I always try to absorb as much info and learn as much as I can about my job. Only just last week as I was looking at jobs I realize I been segmented, specialized by big tech. This tends to happen in big company when they push you to a specialty and you just keep diving deeper and deeper until you are kind of an expert. The downside is without breadth and flexibility and the big picture, changing roles/jobs becomes harder. I have co-worker who had worked on the same type of project over 20+ years, they are expert at what they do but during layoff season they are scared shit-less because: they old, they don't have other skills, and they have a fear of learning again. I already made plans to keep learning new skills that I need for my next job and try to get project that get me exposure to new skills. Rome wasn't built in a day but also Rome had a building plan. When the job feels comfortable and cushy, think about what new skill, problem, challenge can help you learn. There was a 3 month period where I had normal 8hr days and that quarter was the one where I learned the least because I was on autopilot and using the same skill set over and over again.

I dont know why this video was recommended for me by youtube. But I will give you a sub, because it was good to hear your thoughts. I've been in the same place 3 years ago. Working 12hrs a day and trying to grow as fast as I can. My energy lasted for little less than a year when I gained enough reputation to take responsibility over some specific parts of the app, leading some juniors and so on. From this time I started working in more relaxed way. You sure have to keep on working hard when you are new in the team or when the deadline is near but otherwise no one will judge you if you keep saying "still working on this or that" for few days even if its relatively easy task. Everyone has their ups and downs, it is hard to keep the same productivity level all the time. Goodluck on your journey, be sure to keep on growing, helping others and taking responsibility for specific features. Taking into account your attitude I'm sure you will not be junior for long by doing so.

Great video. I like the positive energy. One thing I’ve learned about CORS is that it can be caused by so many issues. Many times, I ignore the CORS error if I’m sure it’s not one of the typical problems caused by CORS, like a missing Access-Control-Allowed-Origins header, or a missing handler for Options requests (although most frameworks should handle that for you). A couple months ago, my team lead and I got stuck on a CORS error when trying to fetch video data from AWS, which seemed very strange because the code did everything to handle it. It turned out an interceptor on the frontend was setting the withCredentials header to true in the HTTP header. So that’s another header to look out for if you’re sitting there wondering why requests won’t go through.

You have the right mindset. You need three (non cognitive) traits to stay in soft dev. Resilience, so you keep going at it even if (...). Tolerance to failure, because you will fail and must keep on going. Ability to deal with frustration, because that's almost every day. They are usually present in people that do it for love. Either for love of the thing itself or love of money. Don't underestimate true mercenaries, they are VERY driven. But take some advice from an old hand. Don't overdo the hours, at least not consistently. It's not that you stop at 10/12/whatever. It's that you stop BEFORE you go into the "brain fog zone". Let's say A-B is the 100% productive time, B-C is the semi-productive time say 70%, and C-D is the "near brain fog" where you're being 40% productive. Once you get into C-D you're already in dangerous waters, because you're starting to not even notice the mistakes you're making. THAT can be VERY costly. Go get some sleep, even if it's just 4h, then come back and finish. Persisting in long crams leads to burnout and maybe depression, and trust me, once you go past that line in the sand, life will never be the same again... Not worth it.

First to get things fast out the door, then to fix all the problems that "fast shipping" brought along. Wash, rinse ,repeat. I'm currently a University student in the CS program, and I cannot describe how accurate some of this stuff is when it comes to looking at what the real point of view is. Everyone shows the technical aspect but not their personal experiences in the program. I started the cs program and coding last year around July and have noticed I have went from being unable to write a line of code to being able to do some of the basic things to a limited extent because I always race through different ways to do it rather than just code it. I still find it hard to code at times especially when university puts so much on you in such a short amount of time. I cannot tell you how many times I vent with other students about how stressful this stuff gets. However, I found a strategy that can help me be more productive and successful in the learning aspect but my coding skills are still relatively weak, but I am convinced that as long as I continue to keep trying and look to instructors and others for help when I need it.

great video. i will say thought that when your a junior, not asking for help if your really stuck on something actually is really bad. when your working in a corperation its the same as coding on some personal project on your spare time. the end game is to ship software of the highest quality to your client in the quickest amount of time. so by not asking for help its jeprodising this workflow in most cases too, a senior dev will know the awnser to what your stuck on and you could have it solved in 5 mins, instead of staying up for 12 hours straight on your own. if your a junior your not expected to know everything. in fact a senior engineer will be more happy to awnser a question you have and will definitly not take it as you dont know this or don know that. so ask more because it will save you a lot of time and it will help build relationships with yu and your team

Also worth checking in your server implementation are allowed methods/headers maybe etc. But the main one would be allowed origin either set to '*' aka 'all' or some specific ip addresses I felt this, keep it up man the authenticity is much needed!

I’ve learned how to develop this skill in grade school bc I supposedly was told to work on that and now I ask my supervisor a lot of questions of what he wants done. I always give progress updates. I know eventually I’ll have to call the shots. Currently do government which they don’t pay as well as fang. Which I might consider doing contracting a bit for payout on the side. As someone who was in this field I kind of envision what I’ll be doing afterwards after I reach higher position. I’m basically jack of all trades which I know a good amount about everything just in case it comes up. It’s tiring to know a lot but I’ll use that to save people more time.

That's one of the things that people mean when they said back in the days it was harder to land a job, things like the cors issue that you run into we grew up in a time where ides werent that useful and LSPs didn't do more than just highlight your code, basically linters didn't exist and you have to actually learn how to follow conventions and semantics but also have least basic understanding of networking so you can setup your development server, ports, firewalls, and be able to deploy your own solution on the server. Now people lack the fundamentals and some don't want to invest time into them at all, which makes their life horrible and it's a sure path for a failure. But that aside i think you're on the right path, giving your best and spending all your time to do what you love is how you become great. On a side note, on your day job if you're a junior developer and you have to spend more then 8 hours to finish your task, it's not a you issue, most of the time it's management issue and you should weight your options and start looking for a better position somewhere else. I would never trust a junior developer to implement MFA or anything that has to do with authentication unless it's supervised and i know the guy has a unique talent. I lead 2 teams at work, and a lot of my core responsibilities on top of working on the more complicated problems is figuring out who works on what so the teams can be efficient, most of my junior developers focus on user facing tasks during the first year, for example things like CRUD actions on certain interfaces and i will gradually increase the complexity based on the person, but i would never trust someone that doesn't have the experience to go over anything beyond simple tasks till i am certain they are ready to handle the task. It's not an actual trust issue, it's simple business decision, if there is a task let say to integrate passkeys for the authorization module as a second factor option, i would rather hand that to a senior developer because it will take him around 1-4 hours to finish and for someone that is now starting it will probably take 1-3 days, because there is a lot of research that has to be put in place and the physical and soft skill abilities to consume information is different between a person that has 6 years of experience and 6 months of experience. But keep going, you got this and don't make presumptions based on a single experience, i had the pleasure of working in awesome companies and some really shitty ones as well.
@lionelthebuilder
@lionelthebuilder 18 күн бұрын
Bro I almost screenshot this and sent to my lead dev but had to stop myself haha maybe that's not a good idea but I think you hit the nail right on the head. I deff felt like I was out of my skill level in what I had been tasked to do but then again I don't want to be that weakling that admits defeat and I appreciate it because now when I do little side projects everything is a bit easier as I've been through the fire a bit and I still have along way to go but I feel like I have the battle scars and a bit of experience which will pay off in the future thanks for the input you obviously know your stuff and it's greatly appreciated.

I quit. My "lead" gave me a task no one else on my team could solve and he gave awful/incorrect advice and I couldn't skip and try another ticket. It often felt like perception was reality at my company, looking back and researching there is so much that no one tells you about how to deal with leads especially #$___# leads. My advice to those in that situation, let them fire you if that's what they are trying to do.

I trust YT channels more that talk about and show their work even the ones they struggle and have to do debug and find their mistakes, its like when you turn in math homework when we were in school growing up that we had to include our solution and problem solving on a different paper showing how we broke down that problem. I don't really vibe check with modern YT channels that don't show the nitty gritty behind problem solving.
