I had a “professional” tell me I should either stop my photography or only do one style despite knowing full well I had only just started out, and was teaching myself and wanted to try different styles to see what suited me best. It really knocked my confidence as I loved this persons work

That's a bit of douche thing to say at the very least.

If you share your work online, be prepared to get an opinion on it. Back in the day, when I started photography and made a "PhOtOgRApHy" page, I had people coming telling me why its shit. They werent wrong and as much as it hurt to realise it, I eventually deleted my page cuz it was pathetic to call myself photography, and my work wasnt good at all. Lots of time has passed and I realised they were right with all their critiques.

yes sometimes your work is critiqued because it is a benefit to you and it can aid. However critique should be asked for as a matter of politeness and be constructive. There are groups people join for example on Facebook where it is part of the join up is that all images are up for critique constructively. However I have seen people go to business pages of photographers and make comments on client images etc. If you feel SO compelled to do so, it is better in a private message. But also some make comments because they want to baluster their status.

If I get a good slagging off online or face to face over my photography, I always ask if they are published. Shuts an awful lot of the naysayers up :).

hahah I have found that a lot of so called naysayers have work of questionable abilities.
