DNA isn't foolproof (though usually "good enough"), and eye-witnesses are _notoriously unreliable_ and that's just when third-parties witness something, let alone actual victims, especially victims of this, which usually make a point of looking away or closing their eyes; they don't normally look the attacker in the face and make eye-contact. Not to mention the race-blindness. Chances are he's guilty, but it's hardly a demonstrable fact.

If they pass, allow them to re-establish their life back into society in a positive way. If they fail the treatment program, toss them back into prison. Focusing on mental health and having the hard and uncomfortable conversations about the real reasons people commit crimes of all kinds, and surprise, the majority of crimes are not committed for the sake of being evil. They are committed because someone didn't get the early intervention, and mental health support they needed.

I don't condone this behavior, an ex psycho colleague of mine just got caught with child pornography and I knew something was deeply wrong with him, he was a psycho with me too when he was department head. So I have direct experience of people like these. But it is scary to think people that did something wrong and want to get back to society and redeem themselves basically almost cannot given all these restrictions. Also, consider that a lot of these safety measures are really "safety theater". We have a lot of supposed safety measures in society that do almost nothing besides giving the illusion of safety and politicians use them to get support. If a predator wants to do something bad he will not care about these restrictions and do it anyway. But if somebody wants to change his life after having been in prison for years and years basically he cannot given he cannot find a job, a place where to live, and so on. This actually could make society much less safe. There are several studies showing that rehabilitation helps much more than punishment and crazy restrictions like these.

My daughter was raped when she was 14 years old. I was not informed about the prediters fate. No registry at that time and he was shielded from me and the public at large. What the cop said "don't commit sex offences if you don't want to be on the register " is exactly how I feel about them too. If you've done the crime then it's too bad if people stigmatise you, because, you can be sure, your victims will have to live with your actions for life, so why are you wanting special treatment? They are not babies and are not usually mentally ill, they know what they are doing is wrong, so they should just grow up and accept the punishment. I am sure their victims don't want to hear about their housing problems and neither do the majority of the public. If you cannot do the time, don't do the crime! Of course, I am not speaking about people who were convicted for oral sex and digital penetration at age 15, but, as I write this I am thinking how old was the victim, as this is what will define this crime. I think there should be clear distinction between the types of crimes and I get the feeling that she's playing down his crime and the inconsistencies in the register. I really don't think you get on the register accidentally, I think you have to have been proved a danger. I'm pretty sure there are different levels, or tiers, of the SOR, from low-risk to high-risk in terms of danger to the public. Unfortunately, being on that list at all is incredibly stigmatized, so yes, someone who's a Tier 1 (the least risk to the public, if I remember correctly) for urinating in a park at night or maybe for sexting with their teenage partner (if both are teens) is looked at with as much disdain and hatred as the Tier 4 (highest risk I think) who raped and killed someone. I'm not sure what the numbers are in terms of how many people account for which tier levels, but the fact that there's a wide range of offenses on that list can be problematic all around.

im normally on the side of VICE, but as someone who lived through sexual violence, I have very little pitty for these people. It's been nearly 12 years and i still go to therapy. My life has never been the same. I live with PTSD, Depression, and perpetual anxiety, which are medicated. I struggled to stay afloat financially because of my inability to keep a job for a prolonged period of time. I even attempted suicide twice. I've forgiven the actions of the man who wronged me, but I don't think he should be allowed to live a normal life after that, and I know there are some who are wrongly charged and put on that list and i feel for them, but if you commit the crime, you must be willing to accept the consequences. I had no choice, why should you?

As the cop noted one is the child pornography laws which means a lot of people simply by sitting alone in their home can commit a sex crime and even be labeled a predator. Exactly! At one point the sheriff guy said something about how prevention is most important to him, but what's he doing about it? The only care or treatment for sex offenders tends to be *after* they've already offended. Something needs to change so that people can come forward to seek help *before* offending without being turned away or locked up or something. My situation was very similar to hers - I was molested by my step-father from as young as I can remember (2 or 3 maybe?) until about 12 - when I told my mother what happened. He was never arrested (my mom didn't call the police) and never convicted, spent a single day in prison. I, like her, was in therapy for my entire adult life. Age 47, I started doing EMDR therapy and it changed my life. All the best to her - and you!

I almost guarantee you will be hard pressed to find many if any of those types of cases around you. Most of them have horrible cases with extremely young victims a lot of them multiple victims and convictions. Within 50 miles of my house I can only find one person who maybe shouldn't be on there because he was 21 and hooked up with a 17 year old. My biological father has been trying to reconnect with our family over the years. He raped and molested me for years as a kid, and although I'm in my 30s and have been living my life (also thanks to lots and lots of therapy) I don't care if adult family members chat with him or reconnect, but if I went somewhere and he was there then I'd leave and only cause an issue if there were any of my nieces or nephews there. But from what I've heard from my siblings, he's been trying to reconnect with them for almost 20 years and the only thing I had to say to my sister was that she better not ever leave him around her kids and if she ever does choose to introduce them then someone needs to be watching every single interaction like their life depends on it because in my opinion no one's guard should ever be down around him, especially when there's kids around. He's been complaining about how he's not able to ever see or get to know his grandkids, he's been isolated from his family...etc. If someone wants to have contact with him then that's on them and they're living their life their way. I'd still likely have contact with that family member but I'm not going to have contact with him.

A LOT of people can't get a job or a stable living situation right now, these individuals aren't special in that regard. And there's no moral law that says people who commit egregious crimes against their fellow man, particularly crimes that weren't driven by poverty and necessity (such as sex crimes) are somehow entitled to an easy route to making a life for themselves after prison. Things are hard for EVERYONE right now. Things are probably hard for their victims as well. Truth be told, many of the things these offenders are whining about, victims of SA go through routinely throughout their lives due to extreme trauma and the mental disabilities it causes. Go into any homeless shelter, and you'll likely meet people, especially women, who've been victims of SA in childhood as well as throughout multiple periods in their adult lives and it's greatly affected their ability to hold down a job and keep stable housing. Then throw drug addiction into the mix, and things get even more difficult. These people also struggle with getting the services they need to have a stable life for themselves, and they're often thrown in jail for non violent crimes which only makes their ability to reintegrate into society even harder. These are the people I, and most of American society should care about as far as this broken system is concerned. The people who were dealt a horrible hand in life and were abused beyond mention, but have never hurt anyone other than themselves as a result. People who deliberately harm others through nothing other than their defective sexual deviancy really shouldn't be high up on anyone's list of priorities regarding their lack of ability to make a life for themselves.

As a victim I am watching this to try to gain a sense of empathy and understanding. I think it's always important to watch the other side of your opinion to see the world as not black and white. I do think there needs to be a level of nuance when approaching who deserves to be registered and who doesn't. There is a level of gray area that I think needs to be addressed. There are some cases that are non-violent minor offenses. I think it should be a part of sentencing on whether a conviction deserves registering or not.

There was a news story about an 18 year old dating a 17 year old which is legal but sending nude photos of each other back and forth was illegal. The 18 year old was convicted of a sex crime against a minor and had to be on the registry. I’m assuming cases like that is what she was referencing.

I think there should be varying levels of punishment for different sexual offenses. Anything regarding children should be life in prison but there are men who are 20 or 21 on the list who messed up with their 17 year old girlfriend and now have their entire life ruined. I 100% understand what you mean but the registry has a lot of different offenses which definitely all don’t have equal severity

for me there is a bit of nuance- when i was 17 i had an 18 year old boyfriend and we sexted one time (i was the one who initatied the conversation) everything was totally consensual. i dont think he should go to jail since there was no pressure from either person. technically i would also get arrested for the production and sharing of underage photos

As a victim of sexual assault myself, many of the people in this comment section are missing the point. People who commit sex offenses have done a TERRIBLE thing, but the idea that people have to pay their time and then move on is impossible when even after they leave jail it is impossible for them to get a job, find housing, or be seen by the community as anything other than disgusting. Human beings deserve life, the chance to live and thrive even after doing terrible things. If you deny someone their humanity, you don’t help their victims, you simply destroy the perpetrator. But what good does that do?

It’s an every day struggle. The pain of knowing that someone hurt me so much as a child and is now all coming back to me in flashbacks. The fact that I didn’t know I was living with OCPD in response to childhood trauma and I never know what can trigger a flashback memory and send me back into panic mode. I don’t trust anyone. A guy that I went to high school with was placed on the registry because he was dating a 17 year old when he was 23. People like this should not be placed on the same list as someone who sexually abuses ten year olds. People aren't going to ask him why he is on the registry, they just see him in the registry and assume that he is a child molester. A once promising life of a funny, popular, and outgoing person destroyed because the parents of his girlfriend didn't agree with him dating their daughter. I'm in my 20s now but was sodomized by my grandpa for two years when I was growing up. It's not only affected my life (hours of therapy, the need for many specialized services, etc) it's affected my family even more. My dad has tried to commit suicide two times due to his depression and guilt, my mom has had a difficult time holding down a job, etc. It's been a huge challenge for my family to deal with everything. Its really shocking to hear that the interviewer seems to feel that sex offenders are being treated poorly.

Criminal justice & sociology major here : Listen to the victim. This is a call for restorative Justice or in her case rehabilitative measures . However, the offender needs to consciously take responsibility for what he did for any of these to work. Also, the victim must be willing. I feel horrible for the victim and that the interviewer so bluntly told her that he denied responsibility for his crime. Human beings deserve constitutional rights. Rights voided for one group means rights voided for all (eventually). (Just my two cents)

I am kind of shocked by this interviewer's disposition. I was assaulted continuously throughout my childhood. I was raped as a teenager and adult. I have never had a close relationship with a woman who did not express she had been abused or assaulted sexually at one point in her life. Most never reported. I'm still open to discussions on how to effectively deal with them, because I know my first abuser was also a victim. That being said, I will never forgive him. There is reporting with an angle and then there is this bizarrely biased pieces. From the words she says to her intonation in the first half, she frames this almost as if sex offenses are not serious. A majority of sex offenses that are ACTUALLY prosecuted are egregious. There is significant evidence that sex offenders are very likely to re-offend. Other countries have tested that 're-integration' thing, even allowing child predators to interact with children regularly to 'desensitize' themselves. They deserve the stigma. I was abused and I did not continue that cycle. It is a god damn choice. Now if this was a piece about how black men are disproportionately accused and convicted of sex offenses without the evidence required to convict white men, that is worth a story. But this? I strongly disagree with this. It is careless towards victims, who are the most likely audience. Poorly done.
