A Roman Catholic from South India now settled in California... IMMENSE admiration for my Sikh brothers and sisters. My admiration for Sikhs was inculcated very early on as my older brother would tell me how the Indian army was one of the better because of Sikhs, that Sikhs were of great character, valiant / brave, warriors... Listening to Harinder Singh puts things into perspective. It's high time that the Indian Government honors them of their legacy and acknowledges and addresses the injustice.

@Self Believe, I think you're misjudging the timelines here, Sikhism was born very recently out of Hinduism & prior to that it was Hindus who were constantly under Islamic onslaught! Be it from the days of Delhi Sultanate - from Aibak to Khiljis to Tuglaqs to Lodis & later on Mughals, to slave trade Hindu Kush to fairly 700 years of persecution of Kashmiri hindus and how about Konkani Brahmins who were killed along the same lines as in 1984 by the Congress itself! (Just not clearly reported, doesn't make it any less of an autoctity). Should I remind of Mopilah? Or Noakhali? Or Operation Searchlight in Bangladesh? You look around and you'd see two countries carved out just so they couldn't stand Pegan Hindus signts. Do I need to remind you that Sikhis and Advaita vedanta similarity and how Sanatana Shastra are core to Sikhism because of the Hindu origin of it? We all are intially persecuted because we stood for our Dharma and the Abrahamics are still on to us. The difference is that Gurus don't see Hindus as different units but a sect along with it. One day our teacher told us about sikh massakar , he told us how when he was just our age one day he heard about death of Indira Gandhi and the very next day when he was at campus a mob attached few sikhs and burned them alive . And he could do nothing as all students inside campus were forced inside rooms and the college gate was closed to protect all kids . , He is still hunt by those memories. For days we were deeply moved . I really feel so sorry for our sikh brothers for all they have been through .

Everyone talk about 84 Massacre and Congress must be punished for it. But when they ask about GoldenTemple attack's apology they always forget talking about what actually happen that Indian Army had to force into a place of worship. If you aid with Pakistan's ISI, if you kill innocent people, if you hide terrorists inside your place of worship, then you can't make a case for an apology. All of these events whether before 84 or the Massacre is the effect of Congress's goofed up strategy that ISI used for it's purpose of breaking India and damaging Hindu - Sikh unity.

I love and respect Sikh community people of my India. I'm from south and I went to Golden temple once. This man who looked so big, he came to me while I was struggling to wear the cloth on my head to cover hair before entering the temple. I got scared when he came to me, but man, he might have looked so big and strong but he was a very kind person. I got overwhelmed by the feeling of gratitude. I never forgot him even after more than 13 years or so. I don't want to lose this precious community from India. They are such pure hearted people. Things in the past have hurt them, I hope things get sorted, people take responsibility and genuinely protect them. They are our people. I will always respect and love them. Thank you uncle. Sikhs need their own identity. By calling them an extension of Hinduism, we are making them live in our shadows. That is just not right, given that they are proud people with a rich heritage. Yes, we all know the Gurus were born in Hindu families, and Guru Govind Singh was heavily influenced and inspired by Advaita Vedanta, but the Gurus also drew a lot of inspiration from Islam as well. So the first step in restoring Hindu Sikh brotherhood is recognition of Sikhism as a faith distinct from Hinduism. Just because the faith was born in the sub-continent, we should not be tempted to put a Sanatani label on it.

My father was 11 year old he saved 4 sikh families in his home when My grandfather was in duty and when he realised about the attacks on sikh he immediately came home. That time my grandmother and my father's brother and sister was in village. So, when he came home my father told him the story and 3-4 times people came in search of them in society but didnt find them. I grew up as a Hindu in Militant Punjab where there was terror like Kashmir at the peak of Bhindranwale cult. I somehow never felt the anger towards my next door Sikh neighbours, so why would a Sikh with all the wisdom at their command feel same about an ordinary Indian. Just as a Sikh felt angry on the 1984 incident, the terrified Hindu of Punjab obviously felt relieved but could also see the palpable anger in Sikh community , which the ordinary Sikh to their credit never directed towards the ordinary Hindu. But terror continued and so did Police fight against terror. Again As a Hindu I was angry at the terrorist but not towards the ordinary Sikh and mostly focused on my profession. Indira Gandhi was assassinated- I felt angry but not towards the Sikhs around me because no one showed any feelings . Riots news came and it made no sense to me , why it happened - they say there were celebrations in Delhi …was it there I can’t say sitting in Punjab?…riots did not make sense … and how it helps Congress was beyond my understanding. Stepping back to me the so called “ grievances ” arising from identity politics ( and this applies to all communities) are engineered by some political minded to create a feeling of victimhood and gain political gains. There is always a feeling of unequal distribution when states are divided, but then where was the need to divide a large state like undivided Punjab . How has it benefitted ed anyone?

You know I am a sikh too, I am aware of the atrosicities of 1984 and would just like to point out that there are several other communities who have suffered for over 30 years, and they have never had to channelise their anger, or require discourse, which may be necessary but doesnt call for tearing up the flag of your own country or abusing it over the internet. I have no sympathy for Khalistanis. I narrowly escaped the Lajpat Nagar blasts in 1996. My bus had just left when the bombs went off at the bus stop. Yet it is also a shame that the perpetrators of 1984 were never properly punished.

I was born in 1977, it is for sure the dark ages when I grew up, being a Hindu we lived in terror in Punjab consistently, I remember my dad getting threats and my mom was a teacher and there was a direct threat to wear Punjabi suits only no Saari,, both communities have suffered immensely. There are are lot of things he mentioned are contradictory and agree with some too , I wish someday someone can talk about Hindus in Punjab also. @@NitikaBansal-sg3xe that was pre-1984. After 1984 the persecution died down. Bhindranwale himself condemned the persecution of Punjabi Hindus however he couldn’t control all Khalistanis. When Bhindranwale was killed and Indira Gandhi shot. The anger by the Indian government caused thousands of Sikhs to be killed. Let me ask you this, who persecuted the Punjabi Sikhs in Delhi? 1984 basically caused thousands of Sikhs to flee to foreign countries like Canada where anger towards Indian government still exists. Remember what Amitabh Bachan said about the Sikh riots?

My mom comes from Punjab sangrur. We are Yadavs now living in Noida but our roots are from Haryana which was then Punjab. She always told me the contributions of the Sikhs for this country and since childhood I always looked upto them like heroes. These people wear their hearts on their sleeves. Sikhs never got justice for the riots which followed after Indira Gandhi's death. There was a deliberate campaign of terror across (mostly North) India to terrorize Sikhs and "teach them a lesson". None of the murderers or the instigators ever went to jail or even brought to trails. We Indians talk a big game like bad shit doesn't happen in India and pogroms and mass killings only happen in other countries. But we need to look inwards at ourselves and hang our heads in shame. For all that Sikhs have done for India, we screwed them over by not giving justice to the victims. It is a blot on India and I have no hesitation in stating that. All right thinking folks should demand, even today, justice for the Sikhs who were the victims of atrocities done to them, esp in New Delhi. I have close friends who are Sikhs and when I hear to stories of what happened to their families and the terror they faced, it is terrible. Not surprised that some Sikhs want Khalistan - we the silent majority pushed them towards that unfortunately.

Point no 1 - demand of Khalistan did not start in 1984 .. it is pre-independence time when this started ..we all condemned congress acts in 1984.. congress does not represent India .. hope this is evident now… No PM has been more Sikh friendly than PM Modi .. this man clearly is curated by Pakistanis.. he forgot how Sikh brothers from Afghanistan came to India to find peace .. they want to show an alternate reality when that doesn’t even exist.. we have Sikh PM, President, Army chief, Navy chief, Air Force chief in this country.. no 2 - If question of persecution is concerned, 1984 will not stand a chance of Mughal persecution of Sikhs is accounted for .. Sikh Gurus were burnt alive and beheaded by Mughals .. today such Khalistanis dance to the tunes these Pakistanis who are the descendants of these Mughals.. they overlook the persecution that is currently happening with Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan today

I visited Punjab once and the way they treated and judge looking at your colour and culture related attire is not something which explain innocence. The gentleman didn’t spoke about the militant actions against minorities in Punjab nor the state enemy sponsorship linked with the recent miraged farmer protest. Seems to gradually presenting religious centric views rather being a just.

Very disturbing and terrible not only for the Sikhs but the entire country. As a South Indian I feel very disturbed by what has happened and try avoiding thinking about it. Feel very sad for them. Sikhs are a respected lot always and still being done. 1984 violence was a pure political violence and the people involved should not be spared at whichever level they are in, however powerful they are.
