Why some slow cars FEEL fast

Ever wonder why certain cars give you a rush while others don't, even at the same speed? Well there's tons of science and math behind why some cars feel fast and others don't. we look at the difference between Speed and Acceleration, the phenomenon of "Jerk", and how the manufacturers can even tune in a sense of speed. Everything from the suspension to the chassis, to the windows come into play. In this video we explore how much a drivers sense of speed can be affected, and just how susceptible our host Jeremiah really is to all of it as he tries to guess car speed while blindfolded.
About Bumper 2 Bumper:
Jeremiah Burton breaks down all things automotive from vehicles like cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles to car parts and accessories, engines, oils, brakes, and more.

One thing I can add to this discussion: lane width on the highway can influence how fast you think you're going. If I drive on a newer bit of highway with wider lanes than I'm used to, I literally have to remind myself that yes, I'm still doing 100kph and yes, that still means I need plenty of braking space in case that truck right therOHMYGOD
@lukasg4807
@lukasg4807 Жыл бұрын
Thing I never understood about breaking space is that no car is going to instantly stop in front of you. They still need to slow down themsleves if they break, so yoh really just need a fast enough reaction to start breaking, not to actually stop.

@Lukas G The short answer: information and reaction times. The long answer: it's been tested years ago that your reaction time is about half the total braking distance. So if the driver in front of you notices something bad in front of him/her and starts braking hard, your brain in normal relaxed driving mode is not aware of this until your eyes register the brake lights, tell your brain, your brain tells your eyes to lock on the brake lights, the eyes send the info back that yes, those are really brake lights in your direct path, your brain tells your leg to start moving off one pedal and onto the other, and then the time it takes for your body and the car's mechanics to do what's needed to get the calipers onto your brakes. That's half the distance already gone. Even with sufficient distance to the car in front of you, your car will need to work hard to keep your crash stop from becoming a crash. (Remember that Top Gear braking distance thing they did? Yeah that was bullsh-- I mean 'comedy'.) The next thing: when a car in front of a close string of cars on the highway brakes a bit, the car behind it tends to brake a little harder to compensate for the cars being suddenly much closer (because of the already mentioned reaction speeds). The car behind that needs to brake even harder, the one behind that even more, etc., until cars end up stopping completely in a traffic jam or pile-up. Keeping enough distance does much to soften this effect, as cars are not 'suddenly much closer' -- you don't need to compensate -- and therefore helps to avoid traffic jams & pile-ups behind you. Finally, there are situations where the car in front of you does brake faster than its brakes could do. For example, when the driver doesn't pay attention and rams another car. Or spins out of control. In those cases, a good distance means the difference between just touching your brake pedal the moment you hit the other vehicle, or driving much slower by that point. In other words, the difference between potentially murdering people and a stoved-in front bumper. In an ideal world, you get the information about the obstacle the same time as the car in front of you does. In an ideal world, your cars are driving on a similar surface, with similar tyres, have the same type of brakes and they are equally well maintained, and no-one ever gets cut off, falls asleep, loses grip, has broken brake lights or spins out. We do not live in an ideal world.

The problem with the blindfold test is I doubt you're actually "sensing" what speed you're traveling-since, as you mentioned earlier in the video, you can't feel speed. I'd imagine what's happening in the blindfold experiment is that you're feeling the car accelerate and you're remembering the intensity and duration of that acceleration and matching that up mentally with your past experience with acceleration, same thing with deceleration. So the blindfold test is probably more of a mental equation than a "body sensation". Also, a car with stiffer suspension will let you feel more of the imperfections of the road at speed, which will also give you a pretty good idea of how fast you're traveling. Not because of the speed itself, but because your body knows what going over a bump in the road at 15 mph feels like vs 60 mph. So, it stands to reason that a stiffer suspension would be more accurate in the blindfold test.

First, feeling the car shacking is exactly how you feel the speed. The faster you go, the more unstable it feels. Second, accuracy depends more on personal experience, because your senses are calibrated based of that. While more bumpiness can allow a better accuracy, previous experience is still th3 strongest factor.

Good to know about context altering our perception of speed. It reminded me of how, years ago, in World of Warcraft, I found flying mounts way more fun when flying low. Now it makes sense that when flying higher up at the same speed, it felt really slow because I had all the context of where I was coming from and going to. Flying close to the ground at the same speed felt way faster. Cool how it rings true even in a case like that.

Thanks for sharing this! Super interesting. Went from driving an Xterra to an XB and I have to be sooooo f’n careful on the freeway. On a good day I’ll hit 50 on the on ramp and be breaking 80 by the time I merge. Like how?! Still trying to wrap my brain around the info dump here and how driving a smaller car has made me speed racer. I never experienced this driving around in the Xterra. In like 15 years of having one I got one speeding ticket - and that was due to being in an unknown area and driving into a school zone. Every time I take the XB out I legit feel like I’m in a go cart. Crazy what a difference size, weight and acceleration play.

Very interesting. In my S5, I drive slower in dynamic than in comfort mode because I feel every bit of the road. More aggressive shifts and exhaust crackling remind me to let up early because I feel like I'm hauling ass. In comfort mode, the powerband isn't as aggressive, but the smoothness of it creeps up so quick. The road is plush and the shifts are seamless. Very easy to hit 60 in a 45 unintentionally.

Kinda depends, actually. If everyone drove sports cars, more woul get more accustomed to be lower to the road and at least be better able to *handle* more speed. And this is why Subaru WRX STI are still so popular to this day, despite their engine having 280 HP. It just feels like you're going so fast while only at 40 mph, on the highway, you feel like you're driving a speed demon. But honestly it isn't going over the speed limit, just feel like a high-end luxury sport vehicle.
@MindlessWanderings
@MindlessWanderings 3 жыл бұрын
Just one criticism of your testing (for future reference). By giving direct feedback, saying what the actual speed was, after each guess you guys were adding a correction factor to the test. i.e. when a subject knows their error the subject can adjust to account for their perceived error and adjust their guesses to factor it (e.g. "Hmm, I think we're doing 50 but I was off by 10 last time so i'll guess 60"). This also means there was likely an element of practice too meaning which ever car was tested first will inevitably have a larger error that the second vehicle. If doing a blind test like that, don't give feedback, just look at the data afterwards.

When I'm going very fast I tend to notice that all the active thinking gets deactivated and much happens from muscle memory etc, also when close calls or sliding out (on a motorcycle) happen everything is slowed down a lot to a point where I've had way more time to react precisely than when I rewatch it on the video, its an interesting phenomenon
@speedymarc

But I think that this happens because there is no right focus in the videos, the whole image is in focus and we are the ones who see where we want to focus, when we review our own accidents. This is interesting coming from the view of my fairly basic sim racing setup (I have a vr headset, pedals and a wheel with force feedback, no motion chair etc) If I'm going at like 80mph, physically it feels pretty calm like I'm chilling along at 30mph or so. If I send it at 200mph, the difference is certainly noticeable but far from the forces you'd feel in a real car. Being lower to the ground also amplifies this, much like when you are high up in an airliner it doesn't feel like you're going nearly as fast as you are in reality. The wheel tries to mimic some of that force and it does work to an extent with force feedback. With a "harsher" feeling car you feel the speed way more than a very smooth ride at the same speed. As you accelerate and the vibrations and feedback ramp up it does feel more like you're pushing forward a lot more even if it's actually the same as a smoother ride. Same goes for a louder engine/exhaust, the roar as you hit the gas adds to the feeling of giving a big push. Of course in my situation you have zero G-force involved and that is a huge factor when compared to fancier rigs or real cars. However, this does help narrow down what other factors come into play in terms of the sense of speed. I find the lower you are to the ground and the more feedback you get, weather physical, visual or auditorily all adds to it in its own right. When you get into the realms of motion seats and wind simulation, this adds a LOT too and gets extremely close to reality, but far from my budget haha. Also interesting side note, racing in the rain adds to the sense of speed a lot for me too - hitting a long straight and seeing the rain glancing of the windshield faster as you go seems to add to the feeling also.

I think that the phenomena due to the lower riding height is due to the fact that you're closer to the ground so the 'movement' of the floor relative to you seems greater. Compare that to riding in a plane, you're super far from the area you're traveling across but you're traveling at high speeds. I think that concept applies to higher vehicles vs lower vehicles

The answer is simple. People having a fisheye lens/optics. It is distorted like a barrel roll effect. And you have a motion blur effect due to low data updates. It helps in speed detection. Since you have to watch in straight line while driving, you will have issues with blur due optics. While object is far from you AND you reaching it for long period - it will feels like driving slow If object is closer to a viewer, and changes fast - it will feels like a fast moving pace. Also, we have a phenomena of "constant speed", it is a brain "energy saving" issue. In a very short terms, brain don't want to process info every single second. The moment when everything around you stills the same - brain skips, no needs in updates. But, our brain is trained to detect changes in environment, and very fast processing it. Like: Drive 5-7mph, and then instantly go 20-30mph - brain will instantly say "wow, danger, stop!" But the same thing - for a high speeds. Drive 100mph for a 1 minute, it will be "stop!". Drive 5-10mins - it will be like 40mph. But the moment you will reduce speed from 100 to 40 - instantly feels like 5mph... But that's only while looking straight forward. Look to sides, and bang, you will know actual speed. Also try the same with looking straight down on a road from a passenger seat.
