Had a sona taric earlier in gold elo with me the only silver. Well all of us were plat except jg last season and sona fed early but we managed to hold on until late game cuz i was using panth and jg was reksai and mid was veig so yeah veig late is insurance and we won.

Ryloris Zeru I cant see how thats any different from a dia game where both teams have 2-3 «functional» brains to figure that out. If both teams know that sona is the weak point the sona team will peel her, and your team will try to get through. If you get through you will probably end up losing the teamfight as you used everything to get one sona.

Riot won’t be able to tackle this strategy effectively until they take the time to identify what is the role of supports & providing supports that do what they are intended to do. The bandaid they used this whole time was support items (which provider gold in a way that altars to true role of support champions) & constant revisions of the items interactions to prevent using it against the way they intend, but sooner or later they will have to answer what support champions are supposed to do. For reference, I predicted this a few months ago (asked a few pros on Twitter, but they never responded 😔) after watching Dots2’s AI game. If you watch the AI’s strategy (since the creators intentional limited its reaction time to prevent mechanics from being the cause of the victory), you gain a great deal of insight. By the way, the AI used a similar strategy in how it distributed gold across its team.

Elliot Smith Honestly, I don't recall a single major buff to the support role since the introduction of Knight's Vow and Redemption, and that was like early season 7? It could be bias of me but I honestly think that if you sum up all the changes since then we don't have many positive changes, Sightstone got removed, Aegis lost its aura, shields getting cut to half, the support rewards were introduced but then quickly abandoned because junglers and ADCarries started abusing it, we only have a single dedicated support rune while ADCarries have what, 3, 4? In fact many of the changes that affected support was because ADCarries were a mess and not because support itself was unbalanced. Again I may be bias but remember when we started to see Vlad/Brand bot lane? Yeah, I think bot lane itself its the problem and since it's the only duo lane in the game it will obviously be more complex in terms of balancing. I think Riot's "diverse" policy is starting to crack lately, not all ADs build crit anymore and not all supports care about buffing your team, hell I think putting 3 CCs on a support is busted and I'm a Thresh main ffs. They should make their minds on what some roles and champions are supposed to be played and put the diversity on the side for a bit, and for crying out loud make a separate competitive patch already.

Bigode I don’t think it’s the items (a bit aside from the gold generating items since they give you stats you desire, vision, & income without much, if any investment). The core issue is how powerful & vital supports are (which make them hard to balance). I’ve played multiple MMOs & generally in team PvP scenarios, if the support dies, your team will lose. It is the most important role by a large margin. To combat this Riot’s balance team has intentional nerfed support roles into the ground (to avoid having to balance them). In general, riot tends to avoid providing support champions with coherent kits (without unfavorably adjusting the numbers) since they would run rampant in the game. In general, damage is much easier to balance than utility, which is why it’s easier for them to get behind brand, lux, velkoz, Zyra, & other damage mages playing as support than utility champions. Sona has a coherent kit, but for the longest time been held back by gold requirements (achieved once again by unfavorably adjusting the numbers). Janna also has a coherent kit, which is why she ran rampant until they nerfed her numbers & her shield duration to the point that it is very hard to use. The problem is support characters (in the classic enchanter/debuff/utility genre) are so important in most PvP games that a 4 person team that includes a support character will almost always beat a 5 person team without a support character. Yet, Riot also wants all 5 people on the team to feel equally important (when taking a sum of their contributions in different aspects of the game). These two ideas are at odds, which is why riot avoids enchanter supports.

How to play vs Sonic: 2 options: 1st: pick strong solo laners (you dont need fav. matchups), who can contest waves by pushing and are able to reach priority. counterpick jungle ro reach river control, go for an very kill oriented bot lane. Problem of taric sona, since sona doesnt wanna lasthit and taric is melee, they cant control the waves in the early game. Go for a mage bot laner/support + sth as an ad threat ( so they cant just go 2x mr/2x ar in runes) and set up waves, teather so sona doesnt proc clepto only spellth. -> dive bottom pre 6, set their exp behind -> snowball and close out the game. 2nd: go for a super scaling botlane with very high range (kogmaw, jinx, twitch, trist) together with teamcomp that can flank and engage from sides/long distanze (azir is very well in mid if you can play him/fit him in aswell). you can teamfight, if you find angles and keep en on range, morgana mid is very good for this aswell (freeze build, blshield to counter enemy engage if they wanna force.) you either use splitpush to get into your scaling, since your mid game is weaker, or heavy waveclear combined with antidive, so you can turtle out, since sonic comps. usually are weak at siege and are forced to dive. dont give up mid prio to easy, since you need them to contest objectives/control river if you have to facecheck. 1st sets u under timepressure, 2nd is just praying to survive. you are not really allowed to make mistakes, as they easily punish it. Funnel works because of your river control and you come online before sonic in mid game, so you can try to just deny mid and top lane, dont risk losing jungle matchup and just leave them on bot, with nothing to do. Anyways, thats just my thoughts on this topic to share, to add to what you already said. And def. a terror in soloq, since you arent coordinated, just forget your wincons haha and hope they just fck up everything

Well you should not push the wave but freeze it under your tower . Taric has to melee hit minions and Sona pre 6 won't touch the minions because it will cancel the passive of the support item . If you push it pre 6 you have just enabled taric farming

Just a few ideas for specific counterpicks to try out: Shaco: If you want to go with the burst Sona strategy, Shaco is easily your best bet. He gives the least warning of any assassin so Sona doesn't have the time to react and pop archangel's + barrier + W. Kha'Zix: An easier alternative to Shaco, but he gives slightly more warning. Kindred: Kindred is insanely strong late game, and can often out-range everything with enough marks. Kindred ult also out-lasts Taric ult, which is an essential part of this strategy, and Kindred is also very good at mowing down tanks like Taric. Soraka: Specifically because a preemptive silence can mean the difference between a won and lost team fight, and her heals are very effective if the enemy lacks grievous wounds. Solid lane bully as well. Malzahar: An AoE silence and suppress on ult, making it really easy to keep Sona or Taric down. Very easy to cleanse out of ult tho. Kayle: If the strategy you'd rather go with is simply out-scaling them, Kayle is by far the best scaler there is. You have to bait Taric ult or else the team fight is still more or less lost, but Kayle ult can alleviate it somewhat. I cannot guarantee any of these are effective, but they all seem like potential candidates. The most we can really hope for is a nerf somewhere, probably two nearby ally support items result in less gold? Or possibly direct nerfs to Sona or Taric?

I finally got the chance to try this build with my roommate and it's insane. Out of 8 games that we played, we lost only one. Some games also looked impossible to win but by stalling and stalling, grouping and team fighting we managed to win.

One counter strat that wasn't mentioned was to pick strong waveclear champs, depending on who enemy mid/top is. Sona/Taric are pretty garbage at shoving/clearing waves. Also wanted to point something out in terms of stats -- regular support Sona often rushes tear as well, and if you're hard winning a game you can upgrade Archangel's first item. That changes the way you interpret the win rate, because then winning game => AA first item, not necessarily AA first item => win game.

Kog'maw has incredible late game damage, but it doesn't mean that much when everyone on the enemy team is invulnerable to all damage for 2.5 seconds. He's also just too vulnerable to assassins.

This idea can only work if your allies understand the point of a Sona/Taric Bot lane. It is not there because those 2 alone can 2v5 with ease. They cannot. They WILL NOT. The purpose of Sona/Taric is as Phy said. To make early game as sustainable as possible and allow gold/lvling to generate scaling to help the dmg carries and because it is Sona/Taric together with everyone, skirmishes will tend to be more in their favor, but this requires trust in the teammates ability to dmg the enemy. If, like most Gold/Silvers, don't understand the benefit of what Sona/Taric provides in the grand scheme of things, they will tilt themselves to playing terribly and try to report bot for "trolling"

Only lost once with this out of 10 games, if you play it right it's pretty good. Nice sustain in lane and poke/zone with Sona Q and Taric E. Definitely not worth picking if you have no bruiser or any other strong champ in your team. It's really easy mid/late game if you have someone who can kill the enemy easily, since you can't deal damage to everyone really fast. The ultimates are really good to set up kills for your teammate, so overall you can't lose if you play sustain in early and roam mid game. (and don't have stupid teammates ofcourse.)

I played against this 2 nights ago. I picked Rek' Sai and snowballed top and mid. By the time lane phase was over they couldn't help their team. Obviously, the answer is not always the same, but it worked for me in that scenario.

It was fun while it lasted, but now people are getting much better at countering it. The problem is that the enemy team can just lock in a wave-clearing ADC and solo the lane with impunity early while their support camps mid and invades your bot jungle. It's so simple to execute for the opposing team even in solo queue. By the time you hit 6, your team is so far behind you can't catch up.

I feel your pain. I cant get internet at my house either. I watch most of your vids on my phone then when I want to play I actually have a 24 hour McDonalds nearby which allow me to play there. Sometimes I use their internet sometimes my phone as a hot spot depending on the day. It works for the moment but God I miss being able to play at home. Honestly, I'm convinced Sona is secret broken anyway. Her dmg as a support is pretty absurd. People say its hard to climb low elo as support just need to play sona, you can pretty much shrek bot lane, build mage, and proceed to have highest dmg done till like diamond. Annie and AP malph is my OP bot lane. Full Combo by the two alone does 1.5k damage at lv 6 or full HP of any carry. At mid and end game they can 1 shot 2 or 3 people if caught

I think a veigar+(aggresive support) bot lane could potentially beat this strat. I used to play veigar bot lane for fun and his only real weakness was his early game (pre 6) and his lack of wave clear. Against taric+sona you dont have to worry about any of that + you can burst down sona even through her shields.

zilean mid with Morde kayle botlane can win against this just funnel into Kayle once her quest is complete give her the zil tis and extra levels and you have one of the strongest meele champs in case they get jump into your nono zone you can also get nunu or something tanky jg and have him buy knights bow and put it on Kayle

how to nerf it: as you probaby know, when you have a relic shield when you kill minion both you and the adc get the gold, BUT ALSO GET +1 IN YOUR CS SCORE. just make it no matter what if you get cs your spelltief(or whatever is it. idgaf) go on cd way2: i supp item for every team. since the changes, there is no point taking supp item for solo lanes and jg have their own item way3: even after compiting the quest if you cs spelltief go on cd. you still get the wards

Achieved challenger on eune with them (lookin4uke if u dont believe). Imo Lux brand and vel as a carry supp can counter them quite good + u rly need to have frontline if you want it to work

Wouldn't this strat be countered by just having a team with good disengadge and a good split pusher? As a big Taric and Sona fan (both of them are mastery 7 for me), I don't think this botlane is undefeatable... just a really good counter pick for a lot of things. Otherwise I would think Caitlyn Nami would do pretty good. Caitlyn can cause both of them to get no farm and Nami is good for getting out of teamfights when Taric and Sona go in. Not to mention Caitlyn will just be destroying the turrets. Your entire goal will just be to not get to late game. I understand how this could be a problem in soloque, because not everyone wants to end as fast as possible (even though they should), some people want to hit their powerspike and increase their kda despite being able to win for whatever reason... but in pro play? I would feel as if this Sona Taric strat will fall off in pro play to just a strong counter pick option into other mid - late game teams. All strats like: yi jungle mid support/ top support and funneling, Singed proxy farming, Sion suicide are all op in solo que because of the people who don't know how to deal with it... they all fall off in pro play though. But yeah early game poke/ disengadge comp would beat them pretty hard. Taric ult is super easy to waste and Sona ult has a pretty short range. You're basically hoping for someone to get hit by sona r or taric stun every time you go in and then taric can ult and sona taric burst is pretty high. If you can disrupt that combo... they're honestly going to be trash. So yeah poke them out of the game and disrupt their combo by saving cds early and then siege towers as cait and have a strong split pusher if for some god forbidden reason you make it to late game.

I might have missed it, but in all of the footage it does not seem that your team as AD carry at all. Why not put a ranged AD carry in mid... like Corki, Sivir or any other that can solo it. Fights will probably go faster and strategy still prevail.. since Sona is pretty much the AP of your team
