Some chapters, like the Dragon Spears, eat their dead simply to pass knowledge and experience to others, and that is arguably one of the more "wholesome" examples of this practice. Also, sometimes the potency of the memories aquired varied depending on the chapter; like the Soul Drinkers, who got their name because they would also inherit some the subjects emotions associated with the memories, as if they also able to see into the subject's soul!!!

Mortarian does it to a Cultist leader who failed him and fled battle in the siege of Terra in “Garro: Knight in Grey”.
