If Spirit Airlines goes out of business, then the reasoning used to block the merger with JetBlue is flawed. Assuming that the reasoning is that prices will rise after the merger, and there are no other super cheap airlines, then blocking a merger would insure the current price of Spirit’s tickets. By blocking the merger, however, the reasoning of the DOJ didn’t take into account that Spirit’s business plan is, in the long-term, unsustainable and it can only exist as an entity of a larger airline.

“We are not going to get anywhere if you win, the merger isn’t approved, and Spirit goes belly-up,” the judge said to a Justice Department lawyer during closing arguments in December. Weeks later he blocked the merger, possibly bringing about the very situation he had described as getting us nowhere. Brilliant.
@GodofGHz9 ай бұрын
I had purchased two tickets to Orlando for me and my wife right after our wedding. Not a honeymoon, but more a spur-of-the-moment, "let's go to Disney!" They tickets were somewhat cheaper (when adding price of carry-ons) and we weren't on a tight schedule. I figured it's ok if the plane is delayed a little, so long as we get there. 1 week before, they moved our flight from 12pm noon to 9pm at night so we missed an entire day of our vacation, they also changed our flight from direct to a 2hr layover. So instead of 12pm-3pm landing in orlando, now we were doing 9pm-3am. And for what? To save $80 across 2 tickets? I bought Delta tickets on the spot. Spirit lost a customer for life before I even got on the plane, and god knows what other BS they would pull. THIS is why Spirit is failing. Their ruthless cost cutting cuts (heh) into their ability to reliably travel at all. Their offers are extremely poor value for money and make the flying experience more stressful and way worse than it has to be.

The DOJ judge that blocked the merger with JetBlue didn't consider the poor financial status of Spirit to stay in business. This wasn't a secret, because it was a reason for the original merger proposal with Frontier Airlines. On the other hand, the JetBlue merger was a hostile takeover. Initially, Spirit's CEO and board members opposed the merger. The union for flight attendants also opposed the merger, fearing it'd cause job losses. But the story is not over. JetBlue is required to pay a $470 million breakup fee to Spirit, for the merger failure. The breakup fee was a clause in the merger agreement, which JetBlue is disputing. Spirit says it has enough funds to continue alone in 2024. But not sure about debt payments in 2025 and 2026.

Honestly I had found air travel to have become actively unpleasant before COVID; now post-COVID when most airlines that canceled hundreds of flights from their regular schedule and have not replaced those flights, it has gotten worse. Delays, canceled flights, getting stranded in a connection city, etc. etc. has become the norm and I've experienced it on so-called "higher end" airlines like United and American as well as lower-cost like Southwest. I travel mainly for business so my company is usually paying for the flight but even without having to pay the cost of the ticket, air travel has become a misery. All the airlines keep shrinking the number of cubic inches of space for each seat to the point where now I find myself feeling cramped and I am a pretty small guy 5'6" with short legs. I truly pity folks with long legs as I don't know how they don't have blood clots by the time they land. All that to say that, since flying has become so unpleasant I am not going to do anything to make it even more unpleasant such as pick the absolute lowest cost airline when doing so is going to likely exacerbate all of the issues listed here.

For the last half dozen or so flights i've taken across the country, i intentionally spent at least $100-$200 more for a flight on any other companies planes. Mostly because the seats on Spirit airlines feels like sitting on a rock. It is by far the most uncomfortable experience in a plane i've ever had. I'll pay a couple hundred more to be comfortable on a plane.

I have flown on Spirit. I know they are low fare, charge for everything. But their extra charges are so outrageously priced that I made it a point to not give them one cent more than the price for that lousy seat (and it really was an awful seat but, to be fair, that's their gig and I knew it). I get there is a premium to be paid for this or that but it's too much on Spirit.

I don’t think the courts had a right to block the purchase of Spirit by JetBlue. I think that smells fishy and should be looked into by a higher commission.

Not sure why Americans don't like Spirit. Is like Ryanair or Wizzair in Europe - super cheap tickets to many destinations as long as you travel with a small cabin bag. If you want your peanuts pay $100 more and fly with Delta or KLM

Spirit’s services and integrity is so much worse than Ryanair and other budget airlines in Europe. Spirit has frequent delays and cancellations and terrible customer service. I never had a problem with Ryanair but Spirit cancels or delay my flights by a day or two the few times I booked them.
@ian35809 ай бұрын
I think the 'small cabin bag' is the issue. We travel with larger bags. Why? Leaving the northeast in January the temp is 20*F, and you're flying to Florida. So you're wearing a coat and boots or shoes, then your bag not only has your warm weather clothes but also at least 1 pair of shoes which take up a lot of space. Or the reverse and your traveling to a colder place, and winter clothes take up A LOT of room.

Not a fan of a Spirit but that’s mainly due to the passengers I encountered when flying Spirit. People generally suck on all airlines but the rudeness and craziness seemed to increased on Spirit flights. For a 2-3 hour flight, I wouldn’t mind flying Spirit again. But nothing more than that.

The best chance for the ULCC model is for frontier to come back and offer another buyout. Otherwise i think both will be circling the drain and once they are gone prices will rise on many of their most popular routes. That being said, i will never fly on either, I'll happily pay a little more for the added reliability and more comfortable experience of mainline carriers.
@25jacobross9 ай бұрын
Have you flown the mainlines recently? When their doors aren’t popping off their seats are just as slim and tightly packed. Delta charges you $100 to pick a seat with basic economy. I got extra leg room on Frontier for … $15.
@quietus139 ай бұрын
@@25jacobross yes I fly mainline all the time and I vastly prefer it because, as I said, I think it's more comfortable and I know it's much more reliable. I also find the other passengers to be more friendly but I've only been on one ULCC flight so maybe it was just a bad experience. If you prefer saving a few bucks for ULCC then good for you, it's a free country and we can all make free choices, enjoy your preference 👍
