Why SpongeBob Seasons 1-3 Are Golden

Oh my wow.... you are so right, this really needs to exist. I grew up on spongebob, to the point that literally had a spongebob themed 12th birthday party (life goal right there) and had the nickname spongebob all throughout my adolescence/youth group years. I was seriously obsessed with it. I think a lot of parents and people our generation now think of it as the quintessential “stupid show” that kids love because fart jokes haha he got died, etc. But only in the last few years after finding out the thing about the first 3 seasons did I realize how GOOD it is on an animation level even. You really can’t ignore its charm... It has a different pace than most “dumb kids shows” and is so not confined to a uh.. consistent episode structure I guess? Any episode can have any kind of speed/structure/story arc which honestly is similar to how adventure time works. It really feels like you can get comfortably lost in the spongebob world without having to react at a joke every few seconds or follow a predictable storyline. And the VISUAL HUMOR! Some of the animation is seriously so experimental and awesome, like inserting an extremely detailed image every now and then (even my bags have bags, dropping the couch on squidwards toe, even the one where spongebob dates a patty) it’s just stuff I don’t think I’ve seen in any other show. Anyway, this idea is awesome and you seem like the right person to execute it! Cannot wait to hear it!!!!

Hey Sam did you know that Stephan Hillenburg wanted the show to end after season 3. The last episode "Pranks a lot" aired in October 11th 2004. So the Spongebob movie (which I saw in theaters) was support to be the grand finally. But Nickelodeon didn't want that. Since the show was super popular they wanted to keep it going and milk it for what its worth. So thats why Hillenburg left the show, and thus we got season 4.

​@@marquezradcliff1614 Even as a kid I noticed the difference in how the show was animated and precisely when spengbab started to become more annoying than funny and clever. the only decent episodes I can remember is the Crane and maybe the krusty towers episode with the hotel, other than that I would watch something else when an episode that wasn't in the first 3 seasons was on. Same thing with the Fairly Oddparents, that show stopped being good when Poof was born and when Cosmo's voice got noticeably more irritating. Season 5 is the last one I watched

I consider season 4 a "transitional season", meaning that there are ok episodes with funny moments, and quotable or memorable lines, but there obviously not quite as equal as the previous seasons. Thats for sure.

I totally agree with you. As a kid I could not tell a good spongebob episode from a bad one, resulting in me having watched The Splinter more times than Band Geeks. But now being an adult i can safely say that Seasons 1-3 of Spongebob is my favorite tv show. Everything about it makes pretty much all the seasons after it pale in comparison. Im kind of late to the party as I see your podcast has released its last episode already but I will start listening from the beginning. Great video!

As I go to the comment sections of Spongebob videos on youtube a lot of people state that the first 3 seasons were the only good ones. Other say the drop began in season 5, or season 6. I agree that the first 3 were good.

I loved seasons 1-3 (and partially 4). But I'm not gonna lie and say that everything after that was garbage. Some episodes were good, and were creative and entertaining. I have yet to see every episode. But from what I see in seasons 5-13, is that the humor is becoming more exaggerated, forced, gross, and kind of repetitive. And I like watching it, probably to see how annoying and bland it all is, which might be wrong. Plus all the caricatures that develop over time. Do I have to explain THOSE??
