The Reignited Trilogy also completely changes the tone of cutscenes to be more whimsical and streamlined which can come at odds with the originals intentional dry humor and atmosphere as well as the understanding that everyone in the universe was pretty much a goof especially in 2 whereas in 3 the cast were given back a bit more of their agency. I feel it gave the overall series a fun grounded feel and it's a shame that the attitudes of the characters felt so messy in Reignited being at odds with the originals dry humor and this new puppy dog Spyro approach they're going for. Would have probably needed a drastic rewrite not to clash as much as it did in my eyes anyway.

It's platinum to know I'm not the only creature who dislikes the intros and outros to levels in Spyro 2. They all have a very negative energy to them. The NPCs that aren't even enemies are strangely mean spirited. Gives me the same atmosphere as a 2017 Elsagate video. I know they were going for "slapstick" but it's not an angelic rubber chicken when a character gets pushed into lava and you can hear high pitched screams. The outro to Magma Cone disturbed me as a kid.

Yeah I’m not a huge fan of Magma Cone for that reason. But the rest of the level is good. I mainly play for the music. That’s why I’m a fan in the first place.

I kinda hate that durring the spyro 2 segment of repeated questions, there WAS a legitimate answer to them in the original that was lost in translation to the remaster. The alchemist is blind and has giant thick plated hard to see through glasses (as opposed to characters who can see and have glasses rims implying glasses), Hunter is an idiot stoner type who never does anything right and it's a running gag that he's incompetent to the point that missions like gathering the monkeys is him taking a bad path because he's just not very bright, the lava lizards hatch from their egg facing the caveman they go to eat, so they just spot the caveman infront of them, and book it towards him, the Tikis are alive and trapping the hula girls and spyro needs to take all the tikis out before the storm boy smacks them away again so they can do their dance together and summon a lightning bolt to blow the evil idol up. But none of that is really clear in the design of the remaster.

Gnasty Gnorc had a completely reasonable motivation. The Sorceress and Ripto were only after power and the dragons were either a means to or threat to that power. Gnasty Gnorc however was deliberately insulted on live TV without any provocation. He took things too far, but was right to at the very least be angry. My spyro unpopular opinion is that I enjoyed Heroes Tail. It was a fun game with an interesting interconnected world, although sometimes some areas could be interconnected enough to become confusing at times and the game was generally trickier than others.

These are all interesting and valid takes and criticisms. Especially that of Spyro 2- but some of the main problems you mentioned would be hardly present if the final game had included the cut content that is Elora's narration. I recommend looking into it if you're not aware of it because it's all available on youtube. It was discovered somewhat recently that Spyro 2 had expansive lore and exposition that explained a lot of information regarding the levels and overall plotline that left me confused in the final game. The cutscenes were supposed to have Elora explaining the scenarios and sometimes tied Ripto into them, keeping him relevant and making the level narratives feel less detached. The exposition wouldn't have been out of place and I genuinely wish it had been left in the game. It changes so much of the experience and the player's perspective on the narrative as a whole I'd considered Ripto a weak villain because it seems he doesn't do anything! Gnasty Gnorc was hardly relevant to the plot of Spyro but that was okay because the game wasn't meant to focus on him and he was more of an ominous force that you confront at the end of the game to tie everything together and conclude the adventure. Ripto however, his name is in the freaking title and to his credit I feel that he at least has a lot of personality. I like that unlike Gnasty and The Sorceress, he interacts with Spyro throughout the game and is a constant presence and gets in the player's way. It's clear why his name is in the title but in the grand scheme of things as far as the player is aware he just gets there and.... he's mean. Somehow he's taking over- we're not sure how but he is! But with the cut content included we'd see that he is a lot more competent and actively threatening than the final game would have us understand him to be. For example, he is responsible for the conflict between Zephyr and Breeze Harbor. He actually causes a lot of conflict in the worlds we explore meaning that he takes over Avalar by attempting to make these societies crumble from the inside out. This is the smartest and most methodical way a Spyro villain has executed their plans. He turns inhabitants against each other, gives them further issues to worry about which distracts them from his takeover, and is trying to inconvenience you- his main threat, with these obstacles and they just... left that out along with a lot of fun lore along the way. While I doubt this would have completely salvaged the game for you, it would've given a lot more drive and motivation for the player and made Ripto seem like more of a continuous threat that is actively trying to stop you. I think it would've at least given you some satisfaction narrative wise since it would've patched some of the holes in the plot and given the game much more substance So overall while I personally like Spyro 2, your critique of it is very sensible and is enough reason to feel dissatisfied with the game. I can completely recognize it as flawed while still enjoying the parts that I do like. Judging the final product on the surface the plotline is in fact all over the place, the side plots are disconnected, and it leaves us asking what Ripto was doing for most of the game aside from twiddling his thumbs dancing around because he took over Avalar with only two monsters at his side. But god would it have been so much less convoluted and confusing with just those bits of cut content alone!

Spyro 4 is in the same boat as Crash: Wrath of Cortex, where it's a decent game on its own but marred by the expectations of a new console game not made by the original team plus a very messy development cycle. I wouldn't deny that I liked it as a kid, but I wouldn't put it above the originals either, so it just sorta exists. I'd be interested in hearing what you think about A Hero's Tail. It did many different things for better or worse and is a lot more polished tech-wise, but the sardonic humor gets cranked up really high.

Just saw this posted on a server I'm on and all I can say after watching this is that you've best summed up a lot of the ups and downs Exo tried to nail down in his remake and rebreak episodes of the games a couple of years ago, especially the issues for Spyro 2 which most seem to look at as the best of the series for some unknown reason. And the section on Enter The Dragonfly best sums up the game for me honestly, I revisited the games awhile ago alongside A Hero's Tail, this time playing the two post PS1 games in reverse order and after that, I felt ETD was the more fun experience despite AHT being more finished, AHT was just pretty frustrating or boring for me which wasn't fun at all.

As for the "cruel" tone of the game, I think it was a result of the postmodern humor of Ratchet & Clank being successful at being a mix of a game with cutscenes straight from a cartoon. The cynical approach of "cruel=funny" really influenced a lot of the cartoons and platformers of the 2000's.
@AddyLovestar2 жыл бұрын
Ratchet and Clank used that humor to build a world, unlike Spyro. R&C also makes smart commentary on many things that wouldn't become common talking points until a decade or more later, and the cruelty plays into character depth. In Spyro they just kinda drop it in and leave it

Both of you rock on!! I’m also a recent ETD fan! Fell in love with the music so I had to go give it a chance when it seemed like the world didn’t. Loved it. Every second of it (minus the few crashes and yes, worry that it would crash due to the frame rate.) It has a beautiful soundtrack (Platform Peril and Honey Marsh being some of my favs) and it has some charm in the dialogue that actually made me laugh. Honey Marsh has the best dialogue exchanges in my opinion. The fact that the crocodile guy didn’t think you could actually do the challenge, then he says “now I owe Jimmy Bob five bucks” had me in stitches 😆 And Dee Bradley Baker does a voice in it and he’s in Phineas and Ferb, so bonus! Going back to the main reason I love it, the soundtrack. It’s so mystical and otherworldly and really feels like all the world’s cultures in one Spyro game. I think this game got me into foreign vocals and music. 😁 Thanks for hearing my Ted talk lol

The way I see it, the little plot ETD has is complete nonsense. I really hope someone, somewhere has the original script and plan for this game, because Spyro 4 would be the next best thing since Spyro 1 if the dev team would have had the chance to make the game they intended to. I love ETD, I like it over other Spyro titles, not for the story though. Or the glitces, which honestly actually doesn’t bother me that much. I like it because of how the game feels like. I like the ambiance, the creativity and especially the music. ETD is just fun and cute game to get back to every once in a while. I hope one day we get to play THE Spyro 4 ETD was supposed to be.

Saying "I can't find any convincing reasons ETD is bad, besides the technical issues" is kind of like saying "I don't see why the Titanic was a failure, besides the sinking." Like yes, everything you're saying about level design is technically true and logical, but you're hyper fixating on it and in the process glossing over the game's massive issues. The constant glitches and bad performance, lack of satisfying game feel, the super rough visuals, and the fact that the game feels fundamentally incomplete. For 99% of the player base, those ARE the convincing reasons.
