Megatron likely didn't give his soilders an option when it came to decisions. but starscream cares enough about his crews opinions that he let them vote on what he should do and actually respected the vote. Optimus did something similar when the autobots went to the center of the earth. that's what a real leader does. He/ she gives their followers the option to follow them to their potential death or not.

Proof why Megatron is insane: In the Omega lock episode after Optimus destroys the omega lock and the sole means of restoring their planet, Starscream is angry at Optimus for dooming their planet but Megatron on the other hand does not care about Cybertron and laughs because they know the location of the Autobot base.

There was nothing to know about how could that turn out, maybe the cyber-matter wouldn't react well with Unicron's core and so many more factors to consider, so it was risky. Also, the second time he intends to use the Omega Lock on Earth, Ratchet states that there is enough for only one. Primus can give birth to new "people", but Unicron can only erupt some lava in volcanos. Why so much Earth over Cybertron? Maybe to pain Optimus heavily. One thing I cannot understand is why he put Starscream to pursue the fake decoy of Laserbreak, when he himself stated it was a trap which lead to an autobot ambush and his demise. Maybe he wanted to be found, to see Optimu's face when he had succeeded.

If Starscream somehow got Soundwave’s loyalty through showing how crazy Megatron was, he would have had a much higher chance of being leader. Sure, Soundwave would feel betrayed by his friend, but it would be for the better.

The problem is Soundwave usually suffers from a crippling loyalty to Megatron. In alt continuities like IDW Soundwave essentially hated Megatron once he disbanded the decepticons after feeling they crossed one too many lines and it took Galvatron's insanity reduced the decepticon numbers out of desertion to understand actual leadership is more valuable than the glorification of a person, ironically enough by the time Unicron arrived and lacking functional heads, the decepticons were happy to just take Starscream by breaking him out of prison (long story) as their final leader arguing that despite being a selfish cheat he was at least good at keeping a peacetime Cybertron afloat competently all things considered and now need him for the final battle despite Soundwave's objections. In the original G1 Starscream very often pointed out flaws in a lot of Megatron's plans whereas Soundwave just follows up, and often Starscream is proven right at the end of the episode. And in aligned in 2015 RID, he almost destroys everybody trying to contact Megatron despite the fact the Decepticons disbanded long ago. Soundwave is an excellent officer and spy, but is terrible as a consigliere or advisor. If Soundwave takes over the Decepticons, he likely would have tried to become a second Megatron all the way through without any real thought. And we could see here how well that could have ended. I dare to say, Soundwave is a bit of a symbol at times of why excessive or misplaced loyalty is also a terrible trait to have.

@@fourthknower9831 It certainly depends. IDW is better at peacetime. G1 zigzags between 80s logic or "shit, I'm supposed to be a former scientist" logic. Animated struggles maintaining loyalties but is crafty. Movieverse is supposed to be lorewise saner and more noble than Megatron though sadly also corrupted by the war. Armada certainly is more noble. Cybertron is a beast in combat and smarts and slightly less evil than Megatron. The only Starscream that would be flat out worse than Megatron as a leader with no excuses whatsoever is Cyberverse.

I was always rooting for Starscream when I was watching Prime, Animated, Armada etc. and I never knew why but this video sheds some light on that for me. Starscream really only "fails" because he has the drive to try and a lot of the time he's seemingly the only one who tries to challenge the status quo and end the perpetual war between the Autobots and Decepticons even if his intentions and actions aren't the most noble or kind he's doing is best to end a war!

if you think about it, in the very first episode of TFP when starscream was the leader while megatron was gone the autobots wore in a worse position then when megatron came later. starscream was able to kill an autobot and almost kill the other, he was also controlling every energon cave in earth which meant the autobots were getting really low on resources which meant eventually their spark would have dried out, if megatron never returned the deceptions would have won the war under starscream’s command.

Megatron ordered the exodus to curb Starscream's potentially growing power as the war tolled on and Megatron's own influence began to wane. Here's the thing, though. The books Exiles and Exodus are also in the same universe and the games and books directly contradict each other, especially in terms of how Optimus became Prime and found the Matrix. The Aligned continuity is full of self-contradictions if you inculde both the books and the games in it. I personally consider them both separate continuities that happen to have similar events once the war is on Earth. Either way, the Starscream we see in Prime is unlikely to make the same mistake he did with the energon transport. We see he is a better leader by then and he also has learned from his mistakes he has made in the past. Prime takes place thousands of years later than the games, he obviously would've learned a lot since then. It's not like it just happened last week, just pointing that out.

Its also implied Starscream, despite having a huge ass ship and lots of energon mines scattered around, somehow managed to avoid autobot detection for the most part. And when one managed to get in close, he made sure said autobot would never reveal their location so to say. The autobots started to be more proactive fighting and meddling with the decepticons when Megatron attacked with Dark Energon and essentially blew most of the cover. Even if the autobots knew the decepticons were around its implied they still were having problems tracking them down and spoiling their plans.

Personally, I think the best cast scenario would be if Megatron and Starscream would have the same respect for each other as their Shattered Glass counterparts. I think the idea that the show objectively treats him like a coward is flawed. Instead what I'm seeing is that he genuinely sees HIMSELF as a coward, and copes with that through self depreciating humor. He also gives into cruel urges because he feels it would make no difference not to, thus the times he does not are significant.

Wow, really interesting video! Definitively seeing starscream in a new light! I think the other reason that fans think that Starscream is in general a bad leader and coward is because some of the most famous version of him (g1, tfa, and live-action as examples) ARE cowards and poor leaders. However, tfprime shows that starscream can be a great leader, but the problem is that no one takes him seriously. Same thing happens with bumblebee in the same continuity.

If you look at G1 though, he's not really worse than Megs there either. Megs is a nightmare, and it's the same sort of situation in Prime where he's labeled a coward even though other's are just as quick to run from the Autobots. Think about it, there isn't a single engagement in G1 where Starscream runs off on his own, and it's almost always Megatron giving the order to retreat (in fact Starscream often chastises him over how quickly he tells their troops to turn tail). ... It's the same with people calling him a traitor. if you pay attention in season 1, Rumble doesn't accuse him as being a traitor for wanting to usurp Megs. That's because that's a legitimate way for him to take over the Con's, Rumble just points out he'd not going to beat Megs. We know this is legit, as what is implied to happen in the movie to secure Starscream's leadership? Similarly Megs doesn't call him a traitor (I don't think ) until Season 1 finally, in which Starscream shows himself to be the ultimate loyalist. He has Megs dead to rights, but upon seeing that an Autobot has infiltrated their forces, he puts aside his ambition to prioritize securing their base.

Looking back, Megatron let his obsession with Optimus and hunger for power cloud his judgement many times. He may have been "cunning" but he was far from intelligent. Megatron from TF animated was intelligent enough to trick Sumdac into repairing his body and managed to avoid detection from the autobots by hiding in a mine and secretly building a space bridge to Cybertron. Hell, Prime Scream may have been weaker but his plans were better and he a came closer to success many times. I cannot forgive him for killing Cliff, but he proved to be a more effective leader than Megatron.

A highly skilled fighter, a popular leader, and an enormous headache." That cracked me up lol "You will notice throughout the show that Starscream is an Energon hoarder." *snaps with fingers* YES! YES! THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT!!! I included that in my Rogue!Starscream fic without really having that direct information! I just figured it out from his personality! I knew he thought about the future! :D Though I think I still need to work on the part with no grudges and never being hostile/aggressive unless the opposing character is hostile. Cautiousness is pretty easy to remember, though sometimes it slips a bit, but I think even the most cautious characters can let their guard down a few times. No one's perfect in anything, after all. This video was worth the waiting! I knew Starscream would be a better leader of the Decepticons than Megatron, but I didn't know just HOW much until now! My favorite moment of Starscream is definitely when he puts together that plan in Inside Job and steals all the Autobots' Omega Keys. I didn't realize his creativity in those other episodes though, like with Skyquake, Makeshift and such. Sometimes I need to be directly told about certain things to really realize it, or it has to be blatantly obvious like in Inside Job lol. In this case, Starscream's creativity, to clarify. I can't believe how easy it is to take Megatron's word for granted XD The creators of this show are brilliantly sneaky! The reason why Transformers Prime is still popular today is because there are so many things to analyze, so many unspoken things, easter eggs, mysteries to solve and lies to reveal! It makes the show so much more immersive! Great job on the video, I enjoyed it very much!

You know Starscream can be honorable leader he would go back to cybertron take the energon of earth rule like loki from thor ragnorock. Energon fulfillment, autobots and decepticons enjoying an Energon mug in macadams and reweloming colony worlds. He did personally come to save breakdown even if he used dark energon on himself personally once and forever left his addiction he wanted to know what the power felt like. Plus he would just yell and minimal damage to his troops. If Starscream was leader he will make cybertron the way he has in an image no one can possibly thought of.

When loki was in charge, asgard was prospering, just like loki explained to thor. I think if thor had actually allowed loki to rule legitimately, he would have been surprised at how good of a ruler he was. In Megatron's defense: the Autobots could regroup and gather assets on Earth. They could also recover the Project Iacon relics, which would provide a massive advantage. My knowledge is unclear, but the Decepticons may have had at least some understanding of the Iacon payload, considering it housed many weapons which they produced and subsequently lost in battle.

I wonder, if Starscream really did manage to overthrow Megatron by some miracle, and took the rule over the cons, would Optimus even consider to accept him as a leader just to stop the war? Optimus did see some potential in SS when bots captured him, but later on it seems he began to dislike SS as much as every other con. It would be such an interesting conflict! Prime could even show the dark side of his Spark, if he decided to continue the war because he consideres himself to be a more suited leader.

Well, when the bots captured Starscream, he did reveal by accident to Arcee that he killed Cliffjumper, and she obviously told the others. That is probably partly the reason why the bots dislike him more later on, Optimus included. I wrote a fic where Starscream says it was Megatron's doing instead of "my doing", and he ends up getting taken back to the Autobots' base where they keep him as a prisoner, then they slowly warm up to each other and eventually he becomes an Autobot himself. But later, he reveals himself that he killed Cliffjumper, and things don't go well from there. It's called "The Good, the Bad and Starscream", if you're interested. I wrote it before finding Emperor Kumquat, so there are a few flaws in there, but nothing major, and I relate so much to Starscream that I can write his character pretty well. I also put in some more characters, like the Combaticons, Thundercracker and Skywarp. Again, when I wrote the story, I didn't know the two Seekers are actually dead, and I was so sad to find out about that. I'm trying to find a way to explain why they're alive in my story though. I'm also doing something with the five Protoforms in the Harbinger, turning them into characters of their own and joining the Autobots. I've written 30 chapters so far and am 8 chapters away from finishing the story. Each chapter is a whole episode, changed with Starscream's joining the Autobots. Somewhat changed, at least.
