Thank you for this video. I have been struggling for a while now, mentally, how to cope with a world that seems to be falling apart and history repeating itself. I have chosen to stop with social media and only watch my chosen channels on youtube, and it helps. I am tired of all the negativity, hate, shouting, and egotism that seems to prevail everywhere. I have a hard time believing that people nowadays could be so incapable of normal, respectful conversation.

How old do you have to be to remember a time when people at large had respectful conversations? I'm 58, and in my experience, with very rare exceptions, I find that isn't old enough. Everything is an intellectual (or anti-intellectual) silo devoid of anything but statistics and rhetorical talking points and regressive tribal dogma gathered to SCORE points to "win" an argument fomented by some faction to promote some agenda or interest and "prove" that it's in the best interests of everyone, or everyone who matters. There's PLENTY of "storytelling" (pronounced lying) going on, weaving false-narratives and mythic fictions to rival the Greeks and Romans (and let's not forget Christians), mostly designed to appeal to the vices of greed, envy, fear, pettiness, or to exploit the virtues of empathy, kindness, generosity, curiosity. Hardly anyone can be reached through any means that isn't sensationalized and targeted towards a weakness, and the quiet voices of reason and shared humanity have become fodder to be trampled by the agitated herd. I am attempting to develop my own skills in storytelling, but to be honest it just feels ethically cringe and morally reprehensible to approach it in the way it seems it must be approached if one expects to be heard over the host of Bernaissian ad-men and other professional carnival barkers, and futile to attempt to do so without employing the same dirty manipulative tricks that I do not allow into my own home or mind. Is it any wonder the fabric of Western culture is so threadbare? I certainly agree with the premise of the need and value of more humanizing communication like storytelling, but HOW and WHO is a big question mark.

@@don-eb3fjthe difference today is that back then there was a uniculture persoective and if news was false we at least agreed upon basic reality. Now there are obstructions everywhere dividing people on purpose. People are told the people over there hate you, and that is used by nefarious groups for political reasons. More than often the oerson doesnt hate you but youre 'programmed' to feel they are your enemy. I know a young man that was cancelled/shunned at his school by most students because he politely flirted. This level of social animosity towards people that break social rules contrary to nature creates a culture of fear. So people are afraid to talk honestly nowadays. not being able to speak honestly creates a false world. The false world creates more misunderstandings and prejudging. Our culture has become socially fasciist.

Thank you for this video! ❤💯🙏 The fact that many young people today no longer read books, struggle to engage with videos longer than 30 seconds, and rely heavily on social media for both education and entertainment highlights a concerning trend of cognitive decline. This overreliance on digital media is not only impacting future generations but also diminishing the quality of life and intellectual growth. Our brains are suffering as smartphones, tablets, and computers are increasingly used as pseudo babysitters and caregivers. This dangerous practice sets a harmful precedent, with long-term consequences for mental development and societal well-being. 😟

That’s a neat narrative, but, as always with this simplification, it lacks nuance. If society consistently communicates to a generation that they must achieve everything instantly and in as little time as possible, it becomes psychologically hard to take a break and engage in something such as reading, an activity that has no immediate effect on one’s “progress” in life. The smartphone bad argument makes it so easy for itself by disregarding all the other mechanisms at play here. Young people these days are expected to achieve everything at once as fast as possible, or else they risk falling behind in creating a good life for themselves. This is reflected in the way curricula in both schools and colleges are structured, what young people are expected to have on their CV very early on in their life etc. Society expects instant achievement. Don’t blame smartphones. They are a mere symptom.
@rudolphpyatt4833
@rudolphpyatt4833 Ай бұрын
@ The instant achievement/childhood CV phenomenon is indeed a major (perhaps THE major) driver of the issues described. And it has been happening for decades. As long as society has existed, the news has been bad. I would argue that it was always really hard to escape as well. Rome, Byzantium, China, you name it all took a lot of pains to ensure that heralds shouted the news from common areas and Rome put up the acta in public places. Doom and gloom has always been a political and capitalistic tool. I think if you get down to it, the greatest works of escapism and fantasy are born out of this and always have been. Doom and gloom is where Arthur (and Finn Mac Cumhaill before him), Roland, El Cid (the epic poem version), Fierro, Guan Yu, Vikramanditya, and even Gilgamesh were born. When you need a hero, storytellers make a hero and help us get through the darkness. Thank you for another amazing video, Cinzia!

Thank you. So many statements tend to start with “in these trying times,” or similar. But the times are *always* trying. There has never been a point in history when things weren’t described that way. But that doesn’t mean it’s true. Yes, things could always be better, but they could also always be worse. Just look at infant mortality rates for example. The media has always been biased towards bad news. So we turn to stories to escape it. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. But it would be nice if we could maybe…have some good news too. To balance it out.
@hjorhrafn

“If it’s worth answering, the best answer is given by Tolkien, author, critic, and scholar. Yes, he said, fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the knownothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can." Both Ursula K Le Guin and Tolkien have wonderful essays dealing with this topic, at least in some regards.

I grew up in the 70’s and the 80’s. Lucky there was no social media yet. My grandfather had lots of books, different kinds of books. There were novels, short stories and science books … also classical writers … I loved to read books. It was like I couldn’t let go because I always wanted to know what happened next. It got so bad that I woke up in the weekend at 6am to start reading. For me it was an escape from my daily shitty life. Loving to read was the best that ever happened to me. I could sit for hours in the public library. Reading, looking at books… The quit and the serenity in that place was amazing. And the smell of books, I love it. The love of reading is what helped me through bad times. Now I still read every day. It makes me relax. A good fiction book can make you dream away. It awakens your imagination. I gave this love of reading and storytelling to my daughter. We used to read together when she was a child. Sometimes we would read and finish the book with our own fantasy. Now she is a busy veterinarian but when she has time she still likes to curl up in her couch and read a book with the cat on her lap. I think that she still tells her own stories to that orange monster. 😄. Reading and language are so important. Being able to concentrate and focus on something for a longer period of time can be trained by reading. Having focus and concentration is necessary in almost all other things you do in life. I do hope that parents can help their children to learn how important this is. Social media is here to stay but it is necessary to keep responsibility towards yourself in how to use it. Me, I don’t use it much. I do watch youtube become I like some creators and I like to watch the documentary type of videos. FB is the only other social media platform that I use very moderately. All the other applications aren’t interesting me. I rather do creative things or spend my time outside or with my friends. All this time mindless scrolling is wasted and you never get it back..

It’s such a relief to find a KZbinr actually talking about this. Since COVID, I’ve had so many mental breakdowns, and it’s left me completely drained - mentally and physically. I don’t have any real friends, just acquaintances I make an effort to be social with occasionally. And you’re spot on: all anyone seems to do is parrot the same bad news over and over. Sometimes, I just want to scream and tell them to think for themselves for once instead of recycling the same negativity. Workplaces aren’t much better. Training has become almost nonexistent - you’re expected to know everything as if you’re a mind reader. It’s like no one is acknowledging how chaotic and unsustainable all of this has become. We desperately need to slow down, like how things were in the '90s, or we’re all going to burn out. And don’t even get me started on the loneliness epidemic in the U.S.; it’s affecting both men and women at staggering rates. As a collective we need to put our foot down and stop.

@jessicapendleton8413 I'm in near complete empathy with you on this. I can't get anyone in my own personal orbits to pick up, as one example, a radically important work like Gabor Maté's The Myth of Normal. It's just bizarre, and endlessly frustrating. At this point I honestly believe that little screen addiction (I've never owned one) has screwed up most people's brains.

One simple ingredient of this is that most of the stories we're bombarded with are ones we don't need to hear. Some self-respect that makes us OK with not giving them attention can help. Some narrower focus on where you actually are, not just place, but also context, can help too, instead of being 'out there', where, in fact, there's no real place for you. We've got this innate need to be included and have some handle and influence on our environment, but our environment has become one which is infinitely big, infinitely changing, and also virtual, and also just media, not the real world, so thus we're trying to be included in something that can never include us, and within which we equate to nothing. It's a kind of suicide drive.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Ed Hooks at an animation festival. He is an actor, a pioneer in the field of acting for animators, and has written a book with that exact title as well. He told us that animators (And by extension, all storytellers) are today's shamans. When our faraway ancestors didn't know why something was happening, e.g. why there was a flood, a plague or a war, they would ask their shaman, who would paint themselves and dance around a fire, and then tell the people what the gods had told them as to why these things were happening. I have carried that wisdom with me ever since. I tell stories, so the world makes sense to all of us.

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment Cinzia. Storytelling can often stand in for other forms of human connection which is more important than ever while people are feeling as disconnected as they are today. The idea that storytelling can reach across space and time, helping us to connect with people from alien cultures and in many cases, long dead, is astounding when you think about it. What are books on a shelf but miniature universes waiting to be brought to life by the minds of others? I really hope that we as a society begin to treat it with the reverence it deserves... we live in hope.

You made many interesting points here, including social media being both a solution and a problem. It's been haunting me in recent years. When I was using Instagram on a regular basis, I saw updates from my friends every day, but I don't feel any more connected to them than to any random celebrity I follow. It's when I stopped using social media 24/7 and try to meet my friends in person whenever we can that I get to hear their real stories, what's been happening to them beyond the well-curated lens, and it reminds me why I write in the first place: to let someone out there know that they're being seen. Not "having their content that they put so much effort into show up in a person's life as five blurry seconds in the midst of mindless scrolling and swiping" seen, but "their problems aren't unique and there are people willing to listen to them" seen.

I’ve been intentionally trying to engage with longer-form stories this past year ever since discovering that the Dimension 20 series of TTRPG stories are SO well crafted. Its been fun to rediscover how a slower moving story that takes many days of watching and lots of detail to absorb is so much more satisfying than 5 minute TikTok’s or binging TV shows. ❤ As an aspiring author & editor, I've been struggling with this for over five years now. Storytelling is my passion, my drive, & one of the primary lens through which I view & understand the world. But stories have become so commercialized, bastardized to the point that anyone can be a "storyteller," even an artificial person, so long as there's profit potential. I remind myself that Story matters, that people need it in their lives, and that I should keep pushing ahead even when #stories ™️ continue to grow more & more shallow.

This is part of the reason I literally like to tell stories. Why I’m writing and publishing the series of novels I’m working on now. I want to tell meaningful stories, and also stories with uplifting and hopeful themes.

Really great video, you earned a sub! I loved the contrast/comparisons you used, really helped emphasize your points: telling a story about war in facts vs. telling it from the family's viewpoint, telling a story vs storytelling, and also comparing the 'telling a story' to fast-food which was brilliant.

Your voice is a soothing tonic in the tumult of the digital world and your expository insights make me joyfully inebriated as I listen and ruminate on the content. I love your dichotomy of telling a story and storytelling. It's a wonderful insight seemingly missed by our present circumstances. Interestingly, the digital age is another Guggenheim-esque revelation, democratizing authorship and spreading words across the world. I wonder if our society is in its elementary understanding of how best to utilize our digital technologies to move from merely telling a story for attention onward to storytelling for meaning and human exploration. Will we grow or will we remain in elementary ignorance because of the capital gains available in such ignorance?

Exactly what I needed to see right now.. Had been feeling overwhelmed and lost with my mental health tanking not too long ago, but storytelling and hearing stories has helped bring me out of that. They've made me feel more confident, given me a sense of direction.and have allowed my imagination to go nuts and tell the kinds of stories I loved hearing when I was younger. This video has helped affirmed that feeling that I'm on the right track. Thank you. Keep up the great work :-)

I loved playing TTRPGs. Not only were we told stories by the GM, but we got to play a significant role in the story and how it unravels. It is better than a movie because we are not a passive audience.. we are active participants. Yet unlike real life no matter how badly the story gets there is no risk and at the end of the day we can simply go home.

I think I found your account because you'd commented on a video by Caroline Winkler (correct me if I'm wrong!) and she is a prime example of storytelling, and that's why her videos evoke such a different feeling than so much of the stuff online. Long form video itself is an improvement, but that reminder of what it is to be human and helping us find meaning really resonate. I'm glad I found your channel ❤️

Good point! Last week I started unfollowing a lot of creators on KZbin (not you, though :)) to make my days less filled with soulless information and just try and read more! Which I have already been doing, but I have been sooo tired the last couple of weeks and it is probably because of this. No I will only spend time watching my absolute favorite creators.

I want to thank you for this video. See, I'm a fanfiction writer. On fimfiction I've written a number of stories that have touched people, though my ADHD makes it difficult to finish them. Well, these days I haven't, felt like writing much. I've felt, isolated. Lonely. Disconnected. My Dad has dementia, and I've had to devote a lot of energy taking care of him, and my Mom's stress in also dealing with it has begun to bleed onto me. Combine that with me being depressed at how the world is currently, not only have I felt awfully lonely, I've felt powerless in the deluge of chaos. Like, what can I do? I'm a Witch, and I've used magick to improve myself and help other people, and through other meditation techniques I've done my part to help people, but I didn't feel like it was enough. You, I think helped me see what I need to do. I, have to get back to writing. If I want to make a difference, I should write, tell _my_ stories, and go all in with them. I didn't realize how important stories were until you pointed it out. You, made me feel appreciated, like I _can_ make a difference. So, thank you.
