I’ve always felt economics should be ALL high school student’s focus from 9th-12th grade. It’ll be four years of critical thinking and understanding of how and why the world operates the way it does. Of course make time for arts and phys ed but HS would’ve so much more interesting and beneficial going into college if we all knew how to think like an economist

I am now a high school economics teacher, after spending the first 15 years of my career as a financial advisor and investment compliance officer. My son just graduated with a degree in economics and math and is heading to law school in the fall. Of interest, he started as a mechanical engineering major, and switched to Econ after 2.5 years. He still was able to graduate in 4 years after taking just two classes during the summer. Economics is a great major to consider switching to, if you find that your heart just isn’t in your (first) chosen major, especially if you have taken plenty of math classes.

What did I do with an economics major: tried Phd, dropped out, became an economic consultant, wanted to dig into the theory more so went back for a PhD (part time for a while), realised academic research wasn’t for me so went back to consulting, got a phone call one day from a headhunter inviting me to work for the energy regulator (my field) so headed to the public sector to make a difference, found making a difference fantastic but hard work at senior level, had a year out to be Mum, set up my own consultancy which was pretty successful because by then I had expertise and network, did not like isolation of being a one-man band or income uncertainty of self employment so took a side job teaching economics at a local university, remembered how much I loved being a TA when doing my PhD, as if by magic as things clicked my institution where I had done my PhD advertised for teaching focused roles, 9 years after graduating from PhD went back to my alma mater and have stayed in this role longer than any other but the road is still there for travelling.

I always tell my students that the world is their oyster with an economics degree - very few doors are closed and many are opened. Support is needed to navigate the matching challenge - what is out there, who you are and what matters to you when you start your career. You need the coaching through your career too as you navigate opportunities and how you and what you value changes.

I’m a physics major but I have minors in data science and economics. I love the economics minor because it gives me insight in how everything isn’t clear-cut when suggesting policies for example in environmental economics. The physics major allows me to read and understand the economic models better. In addition, economics is going to serve me well in my personal life by studying different markets like healthcare and real-estate industries. Lastly, I love economics because it gives you the bigger picture on interdependence of our complex, human(error) system.

Maria, thanks for your comment. BS and BA are both great. Just depends on what you want to do with it. Either way, I recommend that you add some courses on data analysis. Also, the math isn’t as bad as you think it is. About studying, economics comes to life when you apply what you are learning to your own world. I recommend spending some time to take abstract models and make them applicable to you.

Very good choices in my opinion, obviously statistical mathematics can be quite difficult for alot of people and economical mathematics can be more abstract which people aren't used to. I'd recommend you just going for it. Watching KZbin channels that focus on the subjects and studying, keeping up with global economic effects, doing internships and updating your resume.

I think, ultimately, I want to go into managing funds and something finance related that's more focused as a career; however, my main focus right now is getting into a good college and finding a good major related to economics. Would you recommend majoring in just economics or are there more specific majors related to economics based on my particular career interest. I'd also love to know if you have any advice for someone in my position who's constantly looking for opportunities that will help with growth and applications for college in a couple of years. Nobody in my family has much knowledge in this field, and I'm desperately looking to find advice on things like mentorships and programs that students with this interest usually partake in during high school and beyond. Is it more beneficial and impressive to do summer programs/courses, or should I actually look to research and projects under an economics mentor? Thank you so much for your content!

I’ve also watched another video saying that economic major is a bit too theoretical and some of the classes like micro and macro are not applicable to the real world, so it’s better to have a minor (or double major) in finance/accounting along with econ major. Is that true?
@EconWithDrA

That might be true depending on the school you go to. But theory is important. Applying it is important too. I think all majors are better when combined with other majors. Dr. A I really hope you open and see this, even though it’s been months since the video came out. I have a question, I been doing my research about taking economics or what actually economics can influence just not myself but to a lot of people, question is: Does attending a specific school matter? in terms of wanting to have a great outcome of learning THE ECONOMICS. I know IVY league schools teaching in economics are way focused differently (which is not an ideal to attend by everybody) than other colleges. Last question: Is economics fully based on essays and Is writing essays a huge factor in passing this major? Coming from me who really struggled or who procrastinate writing essay but willing to learn how to write essay specifically and learn.

Mesha, I see your comment. I’ll try to answer your questions but I am sure my answers will spur other questions so please ask away. 1- does school matter? Yes schools matter. But it depends on what you want to do, what life you want to have, and where you want to live. It’s more complicated question. Path to economics and careers in economics are so varied. 2- economics is based on your ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. Whether that is through essays, data visualizations, or mathematical expressions. You will have to communicate, the method will vary. Also writing ability is not fixed, you can learn how to write, with the right help, you will learn to love it. Hello Dr.A, I am a first-generation college student, and I have to choose my major soon. Even though I am more geared towards a statistics or data science major, I am anxious about my decision and the future. Here's my question; do you think double majoring in economics and statistics or data science will make me stand out as a strong job candidate after graduation? Because I was told that as a statistics major, it is good to have a domain knowledge in a specific field. I am curious about your opinion on that. Thank you.

Knewzi, thanks for the comment. Absolutely a combo of data science or stats and economics is a huge plus in the market. In addition to the things you do on campus, consider joining external communities. Not sure what university you attend but consider joining the econ games. Check out this video I just released. And reach out if you have questions. Glad you stopped by my channel kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIrQk2Cpd7etlbs

@@EconWithDrA well my job is basically practicing economics at the Macro level. Working in the Research department, I prepare reports on the economy, track the key economic indicators thus GDP, Inflation, Interest rates, among others. Propose measures to help the government generate more revenue and ways the revenues generated would be put to best use to have a positive impact on the economy.

I graduated as cum laude in my major course "business economics". I loved the economics subject. But I regret choosing it as my course. Just my opinion.

I have chosen economics as my major. The college i am going to offer history maths as complementary subjects. Can someone suggest me which is better .. I'm not a fan of maths..but everyone says to take maths ..what negatives will i have if i don't take maths ...?

It really depends on what you want to do after college. If you’re interested in doing a PhD then you first have to take a lot of math, which you can read more about on the AEA’s website. For that, the math-econ major is the best preparation. Note that you don’t need to major in history to study it, though! Check out Tyler Cowen’s interviews with Nathan Nunn and Melissa Dell to see the cutting edge of historical economics! Also check out some related research videos on the Econimate KZbin channel!

@@EconWithDrA but what worries me is that I don't know how I'm going to go there at NkU my only strategy now is work hard and never fail economics I'm hoping that when I've graduated in high school school I could somehow go there becouse I really want to study more about economics and my country can't offer the standards of learning I may require which are there in NKU. I actually have a dream and part of it is to be the best economist in whole world but we have scarce resources for that here,I really hope I could go there I'm actually writing my final exam next year and I was hoping you could advise me how i could come and study there
