I'm studying English and Philosophy at Uni, and honestly the Humanities are what make life worth living. I used to be a music major until my health forbade me, but music (and its history) and art and theatre and literature and the history of ideas and how that affects culture, and how we relate to it; it's all a beautiful tapestry. Honestly, it's long been my opinion that we should teach through the prism of history: starting with the most basic ideas of math, philosophy, science, and progressing to the modern day so that students see history not as mere rote memorization of dates, but a fantastic avalanche of ideas and their consequences.

Thank you for this. The Humanities get a lot of attacks based on their supposed "irrelevancy". As a current MA student in Classics (with a Roman/Latin focus...sorry Jean, I know you're more of an Ancient Greek girl!), I've never studied anything more critical and important to understanding contemporary society...and understanding myself and others.

Kassia Lind Yes! My undergrad was communication research, which isn’t only conducting research on forms of communication, but also learning how to communicate research. It sounds like a BS but it’s a BA and we mainly took humanities courses, and needless to say, we did a lot of writing. While I’m aiming for a career in environmental science, I’m working at a health systems research firm and I can’t begin to tell you how difficult it is to help these scientists (doctors, economists, MD-MBAs) communicate their results effectively and practically. Nobody wants to conduct such laborious studies for it to just gather dust in archives and libraries. Regardless of the field, may it be “hard” or “soft” sciences, communicating results for aiding policy change and societal change is essential. We also need to stop preaching to the choir and learning unilaterally. I hate it when a forum is homogenous. We can learn so much from other fields and demographics. I wish more scientists appreciated this. I almost considered getting a postgrad in science communication instead of env sci because of my frustration. In addition to its academic or policy uses, though, understanding the nuances and relevance of communication in everything is more relevant than most people think, especially given how ubiquitous and transformative it has been in our generation (e.g., Trump’s Twitter account, the deep web and the individual’s FB page, media, policy statements and political language, your own Twitter feed, family communication, clique dynamics, organizational comm...so many applications and subsequent consequences). Humanities are just as important as “science-based” courses. One cannot function without the other. Also, comm courses don’t just lead to working in TV or advertisement! 😂

I loved this video tbh, I study English and philosophy at uni and it's a little heartbreaking to see how little people there are taking humanities subjects and degrees. I know that at my uni enrolments for English classes are dropping so much because people just don't see it as useful subject, despite the fact so many humanities degrees involve so many important skills. I find that my classes have done so so much for my critical thinking skills. But most importantly its been so important for learning to understand myself and the world around me

I also love the humanities. I doubled in Anthropology and History and enjoyed every minute. It allowed me to be an arm chair traveler and to learn about how "the other" lives and the cultural research people have been conducting for centuries. To this day people ask me why I studied anthropology/what am I going to do with it. And I don't know, but you know what? I loved it and I didn't allow the opinions/pressure of others ruin my university experience. I work in a library now and I love it. I am able to go deeper into some of the topics that I learned about while at university and that adds value to my life. I feel like Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer haha.

Love this video so much, thank you for making it!! I'm a History/Theology undergrad, and I absolutely love the Humanities!! Sometimes I feel like my degree is looked down on by others, so just think I'm learning about "old stuff and God", but that's not true at all! In my theology class, I've been learning about intersectionality, feminism, gender and religions; culture clashes, race relations and religions freedoms in the USA; blasphemy and it's implications throughout history AND so much more! Last year in history I studied the history of Britain and Europe (including modern day Britain/Europe), and right now I'm learning about the history of the United States! I find everything so incredibly interesting and I'm so happy that I chose to do a Humanities degree! Hopefully I will be able to specialise in gender history next year for my honours level, and I can't wait! :D

What a wonderful video :) love hearing you talk about studies and hope it will encourage those who are unsure of its 'worth'. I studied Drama & English and there would often be jokes about how useful it would be afterwards. I did end up working in theatre for four years but even if not like you say the writing skills but also the confidence in presenting to a group or engaging in discussion is so important to note. And now training to be a counsellor I'm finding that my analysis of situations and imagery is helped by having done that with books and plays, as well as developing empathy through these reading experiences too. Plus I do think deciding what you want to do at such a young age is tough and the humanities actually broadens options rather than narrowing. Hurrah for humanities! x

I studied Illustration at uni (though I very nearly did French or English language). I have deep interests in pretty much all areas of the Humanities, but I think what makes the fields feel so important to me is that, while we may point to fields like hard science or business or engineering (all of which I do think are interesting and important as well) and say those are the more "useful" or "practical" fields, the Humanities, at least for me, are where we will find answers for the questions of why we would even bother with doing anything at all. The Humanities deals with the issue of what the work is for. I don't think we could build a society without the Humanities, but their application and use is far more flexible and intangible than many other areas. But they are the WHY when more concrete-seeming fields are just the HOW.. And we need both. They are vitally important, but the WHY is often more complex and malleable and so is more easily undervalued. In an ostensibly perfectly functioning society, the Humanities give purpose and reason and context to our existence.

Hi, Jen! I love the simple fact that you decided to make this video and talk not about a specific subject, as is usual, but about the Humanities. I studied History and then took a second degree in Library Science, which here in Brazil are considered to be in different areas: while History is no doubt in the field of the Humanities, Library Science and other courses are considered Applied Social Sciences (not sure how it is in the UK) and I noticed such a difference between the two! In the Humanities, as you said, we developed skills for life: how to understand another person's arguments and thinking, how to write, the importance of choosing words carefully... In LS, as I've seen in other Applied Social Science courses, there is this major worrying about technique, so there's this risk of the courses being merely some kind of training, forming not a citizen, a person, but just someone who's employable. I feel like this understaing of education as a mean to entering the job market, and not as something broader, is unfortunately spreading its wings. Anyway, good video. ;) Olivia

Very cool! I am currently finishing up my undergraduate in Fashion Business, however I am planning on working in the museum world, focusing on fashion history. Fashion history definitely goes hand in hand, with everything you were discussing. You have to know the context of the time, a garment was created, in order to fully understand it. Hopefully you've inspired more people to enter the fabulous field of humanities!

How cool! I love displays like that in museums, it sounds like fascinating thing to curate. And that's it isn't it - it is more than that one garment, the same goes for a book, context is so important. Hopefully :D.

yeey cool vid! The humanities are so important. I studied Social Work before (which was in the humanities department, yeah) and am now studying English & German Language and Literature.. It's just so important to realize studying doesn't only need to teach you some fundamental facts, but is also there to inspire you to grow as a person, and I think that is what the humanities does best.

Such a great video! I'm an arts and culture studies major and it's one of the fields that is under fire the most in the Netherlands these days. So much so that we had to take a course almost entirely devoted to justifying the importance of studying arts and culture. It said in the course description that it could help us "explain to our grandparents what it is we will contribute to society". Of course that was a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that it's important for us to understand the importance of what we're doing, but it's definitely true that cultural studies as a field is contstantly asked to justify its existence. Like if you're not literally learning to cure cancer then there's apparently no value to your education...

Yes, studying history definitely does change your perspective on the world we live in today. But I also understand that it's a privilege to be able to study humanities as they're not something that directly "contribute" to the day-to-day functioning of society in the same way that, say, medicine, law, engineering, (even I.T.) and the trades do. We rely on the functioning of all these other things in order to have the privilege to read and analyse our primary sources in the library. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't study the humanities or that they're "worthless" like some people might tell you -- it just means that you should be humble and grateful that you get the opportunity to. :) Who would want to live in a world without the arts?
@auriacos
@auriacos 7 жыл бұрын
Well yes, law, engineering and medicine etc is extremely important, but I wouldn't say that studying Humanities is a privilege. Studying at a higher degree in general is a privilege, but we need people to study Humanities as much as we need people studying the other subject that you listed. What I got from this video, and what I also agree with, is that there's this general idea that there are a few subjects that are worth studying, that are "most important", and that other subject, such as history or language, are just "for fun". But everything goes together, and without, say, the authors of textbooks who HAD to read and be able to analyse primary and secondary sources, it would be extremely more difficult to learn about any subject. I understand where you come from, I just don't think it's necessary to put these subjects against each other because they are all equally valuable :)
@ThesaurusToblerone
@ThesaurusToblerone 7 жыл бұрын
auriacos I really don't like arguing, especially not with strangers on the internet. And I'm a nice person, I promise. This is just my opinion: I think it's nice to think of all subjects as equally valuable to society, especially if one is a humanities student and wants validation for what they're doing, but I really don't think that it's actually true... I guess it depends on what you mean by "valuable." I don't like the polarisation between people on the one hand who say that the humanities are so important to society that they're just as important as trades and medicine, and people on the other saying that arts degrees are "worthless." Can't we have a middle ground? I acknowledge the value and importance of having historians of science, but I don't think that they're absolutely essential to the practice of medicine in the same way that being in good health (thanks to your doctor) and having access to food and water and shelter (made possible by labourers and tradespeople) are absolutely essential to being a historian of science. Or being anything, really. I promise that I myself am a humanities student, but I also really respect my friend who is studying to become a paramedic. She could save my life one day, but what can I do for her with my degree? Yes, having humanities scholars makes the world a better place IN GENERAL. But me specifically having a humanities degree isn't going to save lives -- however, her specifically having a degree in paramedics and nursing IS. They're both important to society and communities, yes, but not to the same level. If we're talking about the value for an individual, maybe they're about the same. But for a community... people need doctors to survive more than they need historians.
@auriacos
@auriacos 7 жыл бұрын
Oh don't worry, I don't think your a bad person at all! And I didn't want to argue, just have a discussion :) I do understand what you mean, some professions are more immediate life-saving and important to the everyday-person. There are some people that we need for the day-to-day-function, just like you said. But I also don't think it's fair when we put for example historians next to doctor and say "well we need the doctor but we don't need the historian". If we could only choose a few subject to teach, a few professions to have, then yes, medicine etc would go first. But that's not how it works, and it's sad to see unnecessary criticism against Humanities and people putting it down because it's "not important". Something can be important even though other things are more important, or more life-saving. So I do agree, we should have a middle ground, and just respect each other for the things we choose to study and do in life.

I appreciate this video so much! My goal is to become a teacher in Humanities studies for younger people, because I really believe that if we show High School student (or even younger student) how important every subject is, it'll be easier for them to make an educated choice for themselves when, and if, they want to continue their studies after graduating. Math is amazing, but if you hate it, history and philosophy and LANGUAGES (as a non-english speaker I'm extremely passionated about lanuguage-studies because COMMUNICATION) etc are just as valid and important.

Hello Jean, I am currently taking a Humanities course which in my opinion does not align with my career goals. Although, I find myself feeling that maybe I am not allowing myself to truly give Humanities a chance to enlighten me. Maybe I find myself fighting to understand other perspectives or angles since I am not a artistic person. I am strong conscientious type of person according to my Organizational Behavior course and this determined to help me notice a great deal of myself and why I behave the way I do. Structure and rules are not a bad thing, it just works. Why does this subject make me think of changing what works? What are your thoughts about my train of thought?

Most of my interests outside of science have, I suppose, been in the humanities section: linguistics, history, culture. I've always loved reading about different cultures, both past and present, and lately it's evolved into reading about politics and philosophy and art and the history of all of it. I have a degree in business though (officially 'international communication'), although then again I did major in Japanese and some of my best subjects were intercultural communication and Japanese history & culture. I constantly get the "so what can you do with your degree" and "why didn't you do something more useful" and it's so incredibly frustrating. Plus I don't see why knowledge of other cultures would *not* be important in this modern age.

Ngl as a geography a level student and planning to a degree in geography I feel like I don’t know english language in slightest but I can write well. I use all those techniques without knowing what they are called but think of the overall structure and words and stats to throw in (I feel like a bad humanities student despite getting As/Bs xD)

Loved this video, it really opened my eyes about humanities! I'm a junior in high school and I'm stuck between choosing to take the philosophy or humanities class. (i can only choose one) Is there a clear difference between the two or what each teaches that you know of that would be able to help me decide?

I am really interested in the Fine Arts and Philippine culture being a Filipino. It is like I have within me an aim to promote and to best preserve our culture and arts in a changing world where people tend to forget their roots and ancestry. I wish to take Fine Arts then go for an art-related business/entrepreneurship of selling merchandises or manufacturing useful products with a slight of fine art in it or into having a little workshop and training center where I can conduct workshops, daily or weekend trainings, summer programs, etc. for pre-school, grade school, high school, and even university students in enjoying a hobby of art making or supporting the educational or curricular programs of their Art classes, giving extra-curricular activities, or even to inspire a new generation of artists and cultural leaders. :) I feel inspired. I believe the arts like the humanities is not dumb field of study, for it takes much courage to study it despite other people telling you that it wont guarantee a financially stable job. For me a humanities or fine art graduate just need to see possibilities on where they can apply their skills and education. I believe that fine artists don't just work in galleries and studios to create and try to sell art, but to venture more avenues of careers in art education, business, social and cultural development, and even trying to apply art as a therapy tool in social work. Fine artists needs to learn more and be open to develop their skills beyond their craft. Like a painter can also learn to do digital painting, graphics, layout designs, and study print media maybe to work in advertising, television, print, etc. and still have time to do the art of painting on canvases. With the world telling us that these fields are unstable especially in financial concerns, we need to put a bit of practicality to it so we can cope but still never loose the passion to it. :D This is how I see my future despite people telling me I have none, and I hope I could get there even going through a bumpy road.

Oh... I want to believe that what you're saying is true. But not in my case or even in my country. I have a bachelor from art history and German language and literature (as a foreign language). I'm not saying that this are not important subject to understand and I do appreciate them, but the skills that I have don't really help me now as I am looking for a job. Only 2 skills that they speak for me are German language and my writhing abilities. And they are not enough. Now I have to work harder to prove myself and make a lot of learning in other fields. I think the problem in my case is the programs in my country. A lot of my co-students have the same problems. And it's sad and discouraging to the point that when people ask you, what have you steadied, you don't tell the whole truth.

I hope your parents understand your choice if you are able to make it. It's your future so although it's good to have those that care about you contribute helpful advice the decision should be yours at the end of the day. Maybe show them the video :). Good luck with whatever you do.

Honestly, the problem with humanities is that there's not really a career path available unless you graduate from an ivy league school. Otherwise, it's better to study it as a hobby. For example, it's a lot cheaper to buy a dozen solid history books and study it as a hobby than borrowing $75,000 to study the same, and far cheaper to read books on philosophy from the library or buying them on Kindle than spending $100,000 to learn the same concepts, and then find out you can't get a job that pays more than $15 or $20 an hour and in a totally unrelated area than what you studied.

Hello, I am from Brazil. I studied Psycology and Modern Laguages/Literature in university. I applied for studying Human Resources in postgraduate and planning a master in Sociology. Humanities are so important for people, it ´s a shame that many of them don´tt have a clue. Most of people think researching is only useful when is about technology, they forget that machines exist because peolple think!

If we obtain Arts we have many opportunities too do but people think it is just crap and waste of time i just completed my second year it’s too hard too learn Psychology,History,Economics but people think it is easy and waste of time but they won’t experience that hard work as we did! Through all that at least we get good opportunities like HR Interior designing Graphics design Fashion designing Lawyer Psychology (in any 25 psychological fields)-also it can be considered in science field Also we can obtain Accounting,Banking or any commerce field because we have Economics In university i was nervous that they will take Arts student into commerce field ... That administration lady told me u can obtain commerce field because u have Economics with 70% So if u obtain Humanties u have all the fields Science-Psychology Commerce-banking/Marketing/Hr/Accounting Computer-Hardware/Software EG Arts-Interior/Graphics/Fashion design English-Writer/Magazines There are more opportunities but still HUMANTIES ROCKS❤️🔥

I loved this video. Thank you for making this. I am an undergraduate student of English and I related so much when you said it changed your perspectives. When I look back to my first year of college, I remember being so enamoured and influenced by the feminist perspectives of my professors. I never really thought about it in school and listening to so many people talk about equality was really inspiring. Apart from that, I also learned to think about everything differently when I read the different kinds of literature. I consciously became more of a diverse reader and I attribute it all to my line of study. I should also thank you for reminding me about why I decided to study English in the first place. So, thank you again for this.

I would love to write a dystopian novel about a world where a new generation has grown up with no liberal arts or humanities teaching cause sometimes I worry that's our future :(. That is such a wonderful thing to have taken away from studying English - what more can hope than a more inclusive and diverse understanding of our world :). Thanks for your comment!

I think studying humanity is so important so that we can learn from our mistakes. People like to do the same mistakes again and again. When I see the rise of all the right-wing parties in Europe I feel like people just don't learn from their mistakes at all. -.-
