When I started to swim freestyle I couldn’t do more than 50. Switching 3 things made me instantly go to 300 meters. 1. Kicking less, or not at all in the beginning. 2. Breathing every second stroke instead of every third. 3. Maybe the most important thing, to not take too deep breath and make sure to exhale it all before the next breath. Last one really is a vicious cycle where you build up carbon dioxide and your reflex is to attempt taking even deeper breaths and not exhale when you should.

Watching the elite/Olympic swimmers, with the exception of the 50 meter sprint, all of the men breathe every other stroke. With the women it is a bit different. None of them breathe every third stroke like the woman in this video does. They tend to breathe on a 2, 2, 4 pattern or some thing similar. Some of the women, like Katie Ledecky, will breathe on the every other stroke. The women burn oxygen and process lactic acid differently than men do.

Hi Brenton. Thank you for all the valuable lessons which helped me a lot to improve my freestyle strokes. I realised lately that my ankles stretch spontaneously when I maintain a streamlined position by lengthening my neck and getting my spine aligned with it. At this position with fully flexed ankles, kicking becomes a lot easier and sustainable. I got the tip of maintaining long neck from one of your drills. I am regularly practicing the side kicks and 6-1-6 kick drills to improve further. Thank you once again for the awesome contents of your tutorials. It proved to be blessing having found your channel.

Did my second freestyle swim session today with no prior experience of swim training. I've had had massive help from your tutorials and not had any other coaching. Was able to swim 25m quite comfortably today when I managed to get the rhytm and timing right of the stroke and breath, breathing every third stroke. Loved the sense of flow and gliding smoothly through the water. Excited to learn to tumble turn now and see how far I'll be able to go before fatiguing. I actually think for me the problem is that I'm not breathing out enough before taking a breath and so slowly accumulate co2 with every breath.

I started swimming October 2022 at age 46 after not swimming since I was a child. I've been experiencing all the things you spoke of in the video. "Fear of face in the water" was a really big one at first and then it was finding my "Rhythm breathing", remaining calm and timing. I run, row, mountain bike, and do dry land exercises every week so I thought swimming was going to be an easy add to what I already do but it was a very rude awakening. I was panicky with my face in the water and over kicking and just getting 25 meters freestyle without running out of breath was very difficult. I felt like I was in a rush to get to the other end of the pool. I'm now, as of Nov 2022, swimming 50m before catching my breath and I'm more calm in the water - albeit I'm consciously making an effort to "relax". I've also found that swimming in general is just a completely different movement and I feel I need to "grease the groove" and get the mileage in so as to let my body adapt to the new mechanics. I'm making an effort to hit the pool 3 days a week and setting goals for myself in what I believe are reasonable and achievable - slow and steady. Anyway, this video struck a chord with me so I wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for the work you're doing because they are helping me figure things out in the water.

i’m a year into swimming and once i realized it’s ok to swim exhausted (or tired) i was able to break through my wall…i equated it to running past 1/2 mile; at 1/2 mile i begin to feel my breathing change, heart rate is now up and it’s no longer a jog but i keep going. once i realized just because i get “tired” at 100m doesn’t mean i can’t continue. it was a state change i had to get over in swimming. i probably thougjt swimming laps should always be “leisurely”, but i should be a workout.

For me when I was a beginner, I got tired quickly because I didn't breathe correctly. I would hold my breath too much when my head was submerged. Imagine using the treadmill or the StairMaster while holding your breath most of the time. You would get fatigued right away. Once I started breathing as normal as possible in the pool I had a lot more stamina. Good swimming technique is all about being very relaxed and tension free and using long smooth strokes rather than short choppy ones.

The first piece of advice is applicable to me. But in my case, I have to keep my head a little up purposely as there are swimmers randomly swimming across the pool. I recently had a terrible accident where one of the swimmers was swimming across the pool and he scratched my back severely and then out of panic tried to pull me into the swimming pool. But thank you for the advice, I'll try to find an empty lane in the pool to practice your advice. Keep up the good work.

Big deal, because as soon as I try and swim free style, I can’t go 150 meters! I try and slow down and relax and seem to slowly build my self into that carbon dioxide! I swim and breath every 2 strokes on my right side! I’m very comfortable in the water! I’m what I can do see improvement?

I really like your videos. In this case, I don't quite understand when the catch starts. It seems that regardless of whether you extend your arm above water or you "post the letter", your hand ends up near the surface of the water in front of you and if you then push down, you are exerting force that doesn't help your forward motion. Is that correct and, if so, should we allow the hand to go down before we really start the catch?

Hi! Thank you for your videos and advice. I have a question. I am 50, swimming for about a year now, On a good day I can do 200 freestyle nonstop, slow, although usually need some rest in between 50s. I guess I am doing something wrong because my left triceps is growing and my right is not. but cant see what. I alternate breathing, I try to make same movements both sides. I am right-handed, my objective is to move on to series of 100s and 200s, I swim a couple times a week, no necessarily for muscle development. I run 1 mile now and then and one-hour of dumbles now and then too. Any ideas would be appreciated, Thanks a lot.

Watched quite a few of your videos and they've been very useful so thanks for putting these out.. I've got a weird issue where I i have previous swam 1800m continuously with a small pull bouy - that swim was 4km in total with a few breaks in between. I've never matched that since and around 1.5-2k is fairly normal with plenty of breaks. However... take that pull bouy away and that's why I'm watching this video again. I hardly kick at all, just enough to keep my legs from sinking down but I'm definitely thinking more about what I'm doing so this could be an issue. I'm always out of breath at 50m and max of 100. A note on this, I'm an adult learner (38) and have a slight fear of the water/drowning and don't like the idea of running of of breath before the end of the pool which I know makes me panic slightly! Any ideas here? Why such a difference with/without the pull bouy? Thanks

I've been swimming since last 4 months and learnt my own way of swimming about 2.5 months into it. I basically do a crawl with my arms without lifting them up above water surface. I can swim for a long time like this without getting tired. Been doing 500m non-stop in about 30 min every day this way for the past 2 months. If i try to do the typical freestyle or the breast stroke, i basically lose my breathing rhythm and shape and get tired soon. Not sure if my method is right or wrong but i feel very comfortable and can go on for a very long time (may be even a 1000m if i tried. My pool has only 30 min sessions at the time i go, so I've been doing only 500m)

Mate you become comfortable with whatever you practice. What you're currently doing is actually called doggy crawl. The thing with freestyle while learning it for the first time is that there are too many things to focus on to. You have to break down all the phases and focus on one thing at a time. That's the best and fastest way to learn i would say. If you think like you're pretty comfortable in water and can swim such distances and you don't need to work on the basics separately then you are wrong. Just be patient and work around the basics you'll get there for sure. 1) start with kicking while arms extended in front (may add a kickboard) 2)one arm holding kickboard at front and pulling through the other + breathing on the pulling side VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ROTATE YOUR HEAD TO BREATH not lift it. above will be probably most important ones to learn if you're not familiar with the movements. Once you get these properly everything else will be easier.

Hi Brenton. I'm not sure if one of those things is an issue or the issue for me. I've been swimming for a year now. 3x a week. And I feel like I've gone nowhere. I've had a few swim instructors and they actually all say the same thing... That I'm not swimming that bad, and they're surprised I'm not able to swim for long-ish sets continuously. My current coach gave me the best advice yet, and I feel like some things have improved but again they haven't resulted in me being able to really start training. Yesterday I had 10x100m scheduled, I wasn't even able to do the first 100. I felt so deep in the water, so uncontrolled, i couldn't handle the thought of feeling out of breath again. There are better days occasionally, but mostly it's like this. I have no issue cycling and running, if my swimming was up to par, i could have completed a 70.3 this year quite comfortably. At the moment I feel kind of lost. I have no idea anymore what to do or where to start. I'm probably also developing kind of a mental block. I've thought about entering your video subscription, but it's hard to get permission to film at my pool. I have some recent footage, but it's not from a good angle. (Frontal view from the pool deck). I don't think we can get far with that.

I can front crawl 400m in just over 11 min with front snorkel and nose clip. Just pushing off the side, no flip turns. I consider that to be adequate for my age and fitness level. One goal would be to get the regular front crawl to under 10:45 min. I can breaststroke for 400m (at what I find acceptable for now, just under 12 min). With regular front crawl my heart rate climbs steadily over 100m until I feel I need to take a break. Intermittently the thighs start burning (I guess over-kicking then). I'm not very fit (working on it; hence swimming 😂), so it takes a while (2-3 min) to get the heart rate down. After each 100m it gets worse. If I even make it to 400m, I am done for the day, pretty knackered even when I give up earlier (because I start struggling so much I can barely keep afloat). I have trouble getting under 20 min (including the breathers) swimming regular front crawl (pushing off to start, no flip turns) this way. It is clearly related to breathing. I also have rather long and heavy legs (I'm 2 m tall). There are just so many things I need to adjust at the same time when incorporating breathing that it gets overwhelming. I just don't seem to be able to swim slowly (and I'm clearly not going "fast" objectively) and relaxed so that my cardio system is not stressed as much. Not sure what the point is of this comment; I won't get a quick-fix distance diagnosis. I guess I just needed to vent. Off to the pool now.

I just started lap swim in a 25m pool, which is longer than the pool I practiced for 2 years. It was a bit scary to go pass my usual stroke count. I could sense my heart rate raising because I wasn’t conditioned to go for 25m. I thought about trying a 50m pool soon. I think I’d feel very scared looking at the distance. I have to say though, swimming a long distance really makes me be very mindful of my form and breathing rhythm. So far I just try to stick to easy pace. But 3 sessions this week I can feel my body reacting to longer laps.

When you start swimming you tend to believe that it is a propulsion system. It is not. The arms are motor. You should be able to swim fast even with almost no kicks. if you are not going fast you should focus on really catching the water and using it to pushing yourself forward, once you get that feeling of gaining speed that way you won't need the kicks that much.

Cause it takes more oxygen, also, you have to release some air while you make the turn so you don’t get water on your nose, add to it that you are also pushing off and rotating your body which takes effort, in all, it’s pretty oxygen consuming and when you don’t know how to do it properly, you will most likely have this 3 problems: 1-you don’t have enough lung condition, and 3-you don’t know how to do it and make more movements than necessary, wasting energy from your body, hence, oxygen, and 3- as you don’t know how to do it, you don’t get to administrate your air properly and may end up throwing it all when only a quarter of it should’ve gone out Still, those are things you improve with time and experience, and also why pushing off is easier than to do the flip, in the push, you avoid all that underwater thingie, whereas with the push, you take a breath and immediately push off, meaning you still have all the air you took (minus the one you take out in the dolphin kick)

@@archismansaha7660when starting to use snorkel, you may want to focus on exhaling through your nose. When you inhale through the snorkel you also have tendency to inhale the water through your nose so just try to exhale immidiately when you feel any water go up your nose. Try with simple drills first like kicking with your arm in front Or pull with your arm under water. I got used to the snorkel after a few days. You may want to try wearing nose clip but a bit loose at the beginning, so you still can exhale through your nose, and make it harder to inhale water.

It’s a weird thing, i don’t really know how to explain it, but what I do, is I keep a pocket of air in my nose, I exhale from the nose like only once or twice in a 25 meter lapse, the rest, I try to breath as normal as possible from the mouth, also, if you are using snorkel, you shouldn’t be getting that much water into your nose as you are looking down, so, as I said, with a little pocket of air there you won’t get it…. Now as I said, I don’t know how to explain it, but maybe give it a try, at first it’ll obviously be uncomfortable, but once you get used to it, it’ll, be better

I always thought freestyle was choosing any style, front crawl being one of them.

Front crawl has pretty much adopted the “freestyle” name since during a freestyle competition swimmers are actually allowed to use any stroke they want to however the front crawl is the fastest

I think all of those applies to me, especially the last one, I’m not quite sure how does “post a letter” should feel like, struggling to get it right, will practice once I can get back in water. The first point, I was told by a trainer before that head should only get in the water a little bit, exactly like you said what we shouldn’t do 😮 So confused, people told me different things

Same for me. There’s lots of conflicting advice out there : Breathe out continuously thru mouth AND nose; breathe out continuously but ONLY thru your mouth; DON’T breathe out continuously, just hold it in until the next breath then blow it all out at once! I think the answer has to be that there’s more than one way to do it, and you just have to try different things to figure out what works best for you. I’m still trying…..

But I should add, I think this video is helpful. In other videos, I’ve heard that you should minimize the kick, but I think I may have been overdoing that, with resultant sinking legs. I did notice that it was unexpectedly easier to do small fast easy kicks than to do a single powerful ’arrow-style’ kick with each arm stroke. Not that it’s easier for everyone, just that it might be easier for me, right now, with my current skill level. There are so many moving parts, and changing one can hinder the others. It takes a lot to put all the parts together!

I believe "post a letter" mean landing finger first rather than elbow, then your arm fully extend in the water, angle slightly down ward(finger lower than elbow, elbow lower than shoulder)

HI Paul, the bucket is a metaphor, I think it's about the width of your hip, the width of the toe of your left foot and the heel of your right foot.😀
