We lived in Switzerland for 16 years. There was a bunker in the apartment buildings we lived in and in the house we lived in. The bunker in the house was inspected and tested about every 4-5 years and there was a signed sheet for completed and passed testing on the inside of the door, for every test since the house was built. If you built a home without a bunker, you had to pay your local municipality for the right to space in the municipality's general bunker... they all have one. The bunkers are NOT just for protection from war - "traditional" or nuclear - they are also for protection from nuclear fallout in case one of many nuclear power plants goes kaboom. Because of the air filtering system, they also provide safety in case of a chemical tanker accident and other things that can contaminate the air where people live. Also, they would provide safe shelter in cases of extreme weather or run-away fires.... and, probably, the whole house falling down on top of them.

We also have a bunker with a circulating air filter (including the large yellow wrench 😊) installed in our house. It is used as a storage room and the racks are actually beds. We also have the army weapon that everyone stores at home and is allowed to keep when they finish their service. Many things are special in Switzerland that would be unthinkable in other countries.
@amnbvcxz86503 ай бұрын
That should be the norm in all countries, especially in North America, Europe and Asia! That’s not weird, the world is weird for having a mindset with preference to depend on luck to survive! The prevalence of short term thinking is what gets humanity in danger in terms of pollution, health hazards, wars and nuclear accidents or warfare.

@@PartyhatRS Every member of the armed forces has their service weapon (currently a SIG 550) at home and may keep it after completing their compulsory service. However, serial fire is then changed to single fire.
@zoutewand2 ай бұрын
@@PartyhatRS as I understand it every man in Switzerland is conscripted and trained in the military. They get to leave after the training and a short period of service and they have to take their weapon with them. This ensures that if there is a sudden invasion, there is no need to suddenly acquire and distribute a ton of guns, they sont need to train people while they are being attacked and every household will be able to defend themself from the invasive forces. As they had been attacked by Germany during WW2, they think it's important that they can defend themself if something like that were ever to happen again. So they basically have a giant backup army, that in the worst case could even function as a guerrilla style army if it is necessary
@Signofevil_Smile4theCam21 күн бұрын
@@zoutewand There are a ton of good reasons of the Swiss army. Since generally everyone has to serve, you not only have the 'Warheads'. this limits the risk of a military ruler, since he has much more resistance within the troops. Having not only the gun and ammunition at home (if you unseal the ammo you have a very serious problem) but also the basic soldier gear, including gas mask and war filter to it, you can mobilize the troops extremely fast, as nearly every servable citizen is ready to serve within 24hrs. On top of that all active soldiers have to perform refresher courses (at my time it was 3 weeks every second week, so 17 initial weeks and then blocks of 3 weeks every 2nd year) until you have your total serve time of 250 days. This keeps the whole army in some kind of shape, of course, not comparable with a professional one, but you still don't have to skill them up with stuff they learned 10 yrs ago. Last but not least they have to perform a mandatory shooting once a year, where a minimum score MUST be reached, else it's repeat until fulfilled. What is not so nice is, that people unable to perform military service, due to be ill (e.g. blind, limited, or whatever) have to pay an annual penalty for not actively contributing to the defense of the country by serving in the army. Unfortunately, this is a nasty side of Switzerland, often being ignored.

This, hands down, is one of the best documentary posts on KZbin. This is not hyperbole whatsoever. It was astonishing in context, with cogent explanations, entertaining in a contributing way, and is produced with perfection e.g. one could say “it’s so Swiss.” I know a fair amount about the bunkers and feel that the narrative here is spot on-or more precisely, each segment and location packed a salvo of information gunning for the passes of our curiosity. And what can I say, after the good old U.S. of A, Switzerland is my second favorite country. I’m rather fond of their rail network and the terminal in Zurich. But, I digress. While watching this post I wondered about two things. First-how would the majority of Swiss bunkers withstand the 5,000 pound U.S. “bunker buster” bomb like the ones lobbed at Iraq in 2003? Second, with such HUGE guns tucked inside mountain beaver conduits, how well and for how long can the rock withstand the repeated concussion and recoil of the cannon when they are fired… …not to mention the decibel level, the deafening sound, of a firing gun echoing throughout the corridors of a bunker of any size? With each kaboom upon firing would assuredly give everyone the bunker shakes-I mean, if you’ve seen “The Hunger Games” you know what I mean. Finally, it’s been awhile since I’ve watched an “independent” KZbin post that gave me a bang for my KZbin “Premium” buck. Bravo!

Most municipalities, towns, cities, etc as wellvas larger businesses also have bunkers to accomodate citizens that dont have access to private bunkers. And these really are just for Swiss citizens. You are not going to luck out if traveling and in Switzerland if a war breaks out, because you are not going to be allowed in these bunkers. Fascinating.

What you saw under the city with a room for surgery, patient care and essentially a morgue is a nuclear shelter for citizens. Until very recently, every resident of Switzerland needed a spot in one of those in the vicinity of their residence, or to build a bunker in their cellar that can provide shelter in case of a nuclear attack. Where I grew up in Switzerland, my family had spots in a nuclear shelter in the mountain behind the house, which has the same facilities, food rations for a specific amount of time and a bunk bed for everyone. Also, people doing civil service still are being trained in first aid, how to build rudimentary telephone lines etc and how to protect these sites. Imho this actually is a very good defense strategy: try invading a country where the majority of the population is prepared for such a worst case scenario, either through training in the military or in civil service. Anyone playing with the idea of an attack would have to consider the extremely high cost of doing so and the resistance they'd run into.

From a Swiss perspective... this is incredibly well researched for KZbin-video standards. You talked to different people, you managed to catch the essence of the topic, and you also shed a light on different political views and aspects. So often in internet-discussions you will only hear one side of the medal. E.g. when looking for the reason why Germany didn't attack us in WW2, where some people will say it was entirely due to the bunkers, and others will claim it was only because of the banks. You said it correctly, it was most probably both and an elaborate risk vs reward analysis. Same goes for the neutrality topic that was big in 2022 due to the Ukraine war. I am very much pro sanctions, because in my view neutrality does not mean inactivity. A judge or a referee is expected to be neutral, but sanctioning is part of their job by definition. However, I thought you shed light on both sides of the argument in an adequate way. Discussions and debates are a huge part of Swiss direct democracy. In the more recent years, certain groups and parties tried to underminde that by using more emotionalized and populist approaches, so it's nice to even see a foreigner capturing the essence of a civilized discussion, not giving any ground to those polarizing forces.

Swiss Person here: As a child, I've always thought the bunkers we had everywhere in our woods where just like- what you could see, so one room. Windows and doors were shut, so it wasn't much more to see than a blob of concrete, the size of a small delivery van. I grew up with one of those "cellar-bunkers", and our school had two big bunkers as well, entire networks I've only ever explored parts of. In I think 7th grade our [sweetheart of a] teacher briefly told us about his time serving in the military in a HUGE bunker, an entire mountain. Even before I've stayed in these city-bunkers multiple times, either when helping out at Conventions/Events where it's easier to rent a bunker than a hotel, or when I was in gymnastics summer camp at my old school. When I moved out from home, our apartment building had maps and noticed on the wall detailing the way to the nearest nuclear safety bunker. That's the way it is, that's normal, we grow up with it. But I think most us "civillians", especially people who've not served in the military ever, will never TRULY realize just how fortified we are, have been, or could be. And we're not even talking about the idk how many bridges they would've blown up in case of invasion, or how we got a shitton of guns. It's fascinating to me, really, because you can stay completely oblivious to all that if you choose. And it's also just- easily forgotten, honestly.

Thanks for the video. Being Swiss, the scale of our bunker system never ceases to amaze me. Three things to add: During WWII, the idea was for the government to perform its functions from the redoubt in case of an invasion. Private cellar bunkers aren‘t mandatory in new constructions anymore, but all inhabitants have a place in a public bunker. The chalet bunkers weren‘t primarily camouflaged to hide them from enemy intelligence but rather to not destroy the picturesque views of the towns and landscapes.

Same thing happened in Finland, but now that it's not a requirement to build bunkers into homes, my local council came up with a good idea. They tunnelled below the town and made underground parking, which also doubles as a bunker for the town. I guess the logic behind it is that it will pay itself off in parking fees. It also aides in traffic congestion as you can drive to different parts of the town through this network via one of the many entrances/exits.

I first visited Switzerland in 1969, and have been both amazed and inspired ever since! I worked with Swissair for decades in my own business, and am more than familiar with how things are done there. As an American engineer, you cannot be impressed by the degree of quality, cleanliness, and thoughtful design and build you see virtually everywhere. In short, Switzerland is a real life "Disneyland" for designers and those who like to build things with their hands. There simply is no rival, anywhere! Trains, buildings, fine watches, optical goods, electrical systems, machinery, everything, has inspired me in everything I have done both in business and industry. If you want to learn how to do things right, visit Switzerland! What most people do not know is that the Swiss telephone system (landline) is designed to withstand a nuclear war, Even with push buttons, most of the systems use switches that can withstand EMP. Almost every dwelling has a concrete fallout shelter with air filtering and other systems, plus a hefty blast door. Are most of these facilities over designed? Yes! But like most things in Switzerland, unlike the US, facilities are designed to last virtually until the next Ice Age and beyond. But it takes a great many highly skilled, educated craftsmen to maintain it all, and they do with amazing aplomb! Both Switzerland and Germany are essential to modern society and the human family in general. Without them, the world would be a much less pleasant place, and without a source of industrial inspiration to all.

While I think more countries could learn from their defense system, I am not okay with them doing it at the expense of the world. They aren't helping more than harming simply via enabling the Black Market. I don't really see how anybody could think Swiss Banks don't harm more than anything else in the Country could help. Unless Swiss start curing cancer and end poverty I don't see them as valuable for anybody else but themselves. They've raped and pillaged much via lending money to criminal syndicates throughout history since they started. From Nazi's to war criminals, I am not a fan. One of my closest friends was born in Switzerland and came to the US when he was a little kid. He’s probably the smartest and most laid back dude I ever met. Quiet but 10 steps ahead of everyone else. We’re also both touring musicians. He’s a bass player and I’m a drummer. And he’s the funkiest and most amazing bass player I’ve ever played with and I’ve played with a LOT of bad ass bass players. So what I’m saying is he’s just a complete anomaly. And his whole family is like him. The Swiss are just built different.

You would love what Colin Furze did on his channel. He got the building permit after the fact. But considering that he's an engineer with attention to detail and was able to do it without the biggest busy bodies in the neighborhood knowing I'm sure there was more pros and no cons in his favor. Incredible!

Drove from Verbier in Switzerland to Chamonix in France last summer and when I got to the Hotel de la Forclaz on the mountain pass road above Trient I stopped to take in the view from a rock outcrop nearby. When I got to it, I realized that some of the rock wasn't rock at all but a gun emplacement :)

Why obsessed with Switzerland? Because of their willingness to benefits from Hitler? Because of Switzerland being a financial safe haven that's destroying all other advanced economies? Yes, Switzerland is super advanced... but they achieve this by continuously free-riding while the others pay the price.

There are 5,500 bunkers in Helsinki, creating a vast network of underground facilities that have been built since the 1980s. And although they're usually used for parking, storage, sporting events and more, their true purpose is more ominous: they are designed to protect those in Finland from attack.
@jefferyzhang1851 Жыл бұрын
Metro networks serve a similar purpose. In peacetime it's mass transit, in wartime they will serve as underground bunkers.

@汤圆-y7f Жыл бұрын
neutrality? I have been brainwashed to believe something like this: "Switzerland is a nation of neutrality and we have the safest banks in the entire world", wonder if the president of the country or the CEO of credit suisse knows what "neutrality" means. Ok, nevermind, credit suisse doesn't exist, and the ex-CEO is hiding in a bunker, now we know why they need all those bunkers.

I remember when I did my military service here in Switzerland, we once went into such a bunker at somewhere at lake lucerne. The entrance to that bunker was a secret door in the rock next to the street. I passed that place many times with my car. But never noticed that secret door. After we entred the bunker, there was a funicular inside that bunker that took us even further down. It was huge. It was amazing

The nice thing about the Bom shelters is: they're an excellent place for food storage, good temperature/climate. And since every building in Switzerland anyway has a basement, so combine it together. the most logical thing in the world.

Hey Johnny thanks for the great vid. Little fun fact: we swiss didn't stop with our defense by only building bunkers, but trapped some key infrastructure as well. Bridges crossing the borders, Railwaylines powercables and much more were rigged to blow up.

Kinda same as mostly all bridges here in Finland. They're made so that they're easy to blow up to stop enemies

@dibudabug80992 жыл бұрын
finding a secret bunker is pretty easy if you ask me. They should hire people at NDB/swiss military to edit google earth's (street view) to something normal instead of cencoring it or leaving that part of that certain street completely off. Because that's just a confirmation to my research and confirms my guess. No worries NDB, i love switzerland and won't ever give that information public. I'm just interested in finding secret facilities, guessing where they are and draw conclusions etc. I do that for any country. Just somethin interesting about the place of the final commando bunker from a military/president. Sometimes i think i should work for you, instead of wasting my talent.
@Slithermotion2 жыл бұрын
@@dibudabug8099 Hmm I‘ve never been into Bunkers that have been blured on map. And they don‘t need to because the entrance look very normal. Unsuspecting. Barndoor, side door on a house ect. Some examples are a bit more specific that are probably a bit risky to tell. But…They are really creative. The wildest thing I‘ve seen had something to do with a hidden gondola and a fake high voltage line. But again those places are not blurred. They are in plane sight.
