Someone posted this on a reddit post about the two movies. I'd like an opinion on if it's accurate. It's pretty long. Frozen absolutely nailed the pacing. It's not just the music, which is fantastic - it's also how the musical numbers are placed throughout the film to draw in and engage the viewer. It's almost hypnotic to children - we could always watch Frozen with my kids even when the youngest was only a year old, but she wouldn't sit through Tangled until she was old enough to understand and follow the plot. Adults like to pretend that stuff doesn't have an effect on us, but it does. Frozen starts off like The Lion King - another of Disney's greatest films - with an instantly recognizable banger of a musical chant, which introduces the setting of the film and anchors the story in a very strong sense of place. Tangled starts off with six minutes of voiceover explaining the backstory followed by a song about how boring Rapunzel's life is. I like Tangled just fine, but the pacing is very uneven and it makes for a less engaging experience. Frozen also hits early and hard with the drama. The accident with Anna and rushing her to the trolls for help. The foreshadowing of the danger which sets up the parents' motivation for hiding Elsa away. It's just much more urgent and effectively told than the story of Gothel finding the flower and kidnapping the princess. You say that Tangled is more "focused" but in fact it's less focused. Frozen focuses tightly on a single storyline, in the sense that all of the action we see in the movie flows from the same source: Elsa's childhood trauma and the family's attempt to deal with it and hide Elsa's powers. Whereas Tangled is a collision of two separate stories: Rapunzel and Gothel (which gives us backstory one, narrated in voiceover at the beginning of the movie) and Eugene's theft and flight (giving us backstory two). These stories collide by accident (fate?). Then also by accident Gothel meets Eugene's former associates - there's a lot of coincidence and contrivance to drive the plot forward. And it's fine - I mean, it's entertaining - but it's not nearly as focused as Frozen's story: Elsa harms Anna, therefore Elsa shuts Anna out, therefore Anna is a shut-in who falls for the first stranger who talks to her, therefore Elsa freaks out, therefore Elsa flees, therefore Anna goes to find her, therefore Anna meets Kristoff and Olaf and gets re-Frozen, etc. etc. etc. - all of the action and conflict in the story flowing logically and inexorably from the same source. The fact that Frozen is driven forward by a single unified chain of events and consequences makes the movie very engaging and in my opinion it also heightens the drama, because you get the feeling that everything is happening because of character choices, rather than coincidences and accidents. It means that the choices the characters make end up having more weight and higher stakes. Then there are the "love" songs. Rapunzel and Eugene get "I see the light", which is... fine. It's slow. It's kind of a boring scene. It ends badly with Eugene seeing his ex-partners and then lying to Rapunzel about it and running off, which is an overused and toxic trope in Disney movies. Anna and Kristoff get "Fixer Upper", which is an absolute banger and also thematically on point for the movie as a whole: "people make bad choices when they're mad or scared or stressed, but throw a little love their way and you'll bring out their best". It ends with Kristoff doing the right thing and bringing Anna to someone who he thinks can save her. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy both movies. But Frozen has better songs, which are used more effectively. It's got a tighter story which is paced better and has more dramatic weight. It has several effective twists, and I don't think the fact that the Hans twist was not telegraphed is a negative. The fact that it wasn't True Love's Kiss that saved Anna, but her act of sacrifice for her sister, is an incredible subversion of prior Disney tropes and a powerful statement about what love really is. And that brings me to the final point. Gothel is fine as a villain. Perfectly serviceable. She's an evil manipulative passive aggressive sociopath. She has a great villain song. But she's also very conventional. "I'm the villain, here's the bad thing I want to do, here's how far I'll go to get what I want". Throw her out the window at the end of the movie and all is well. In Frozen, the villain is fear. Grandpa Troll basically says it all the way back in the beginning of the movie. Fear will make you push away the people you love. Fear will make you isolate yourself where no one can hurt you - and where you can't hurt them. This fear is what we need to fight the most, and the only way to beat it is to love boldly and bravely. That is f*cking epic. Like I said, I like both movies. I'd watch either one right now. But Frozen is justifiably more popular with critics and audiences - it's just a better film, all around, by pretty much every metric. Tangled is good. Maybe even great. But Frozen is a masterpiece.

The decision to make Mother Gothel's power stem from gaslighting was terrifyingly real. I've met people like her, who can twist any scenario into them being the victim, their way being the only reasonable way, and any resistance being either stupid or evil. People like that can ruin lives, especially when they are the primary influence over children. She is chillingly, realistically evil, and I love this movie for fully committing to that.

I would argue Pocahontas or Mulan tbh. Pocahontas literally forces her dad to choose between her and the war just because she fell in love with one of them. She wasn’t afraid to die with the man she loved if it came to that, because she was ultimately standing up for herself and what she believed in, and her sacrifice was also about protecting both peoples and getting them to see how pointless the war was. And Mulan? She just wanted someone who understood her and expected she’d be killed in war just to protect her dad who would die immediately. And even after she’s been disgraced and abandoned by Shang and her comrades, she still goes after them upon realizing Shun Yu survived the avalanche with some of his men. Even in the end after being honored by the Emperor and the entirety of China, she still feels she is unworthy of her father’s love because she couldn’t honor their family the way a woman was supposed to by being a beautiful bride. But he immediately forgives her for her mistakes and tells her she is the most precious and honorable treasure. Though yes, Rapunzel is very confident and passionate about her dreams, but ultimately is very kind and cheerful and friendly. Its so adorable how her sunny personality eventually rubs on Flynn that he opens up to her about his past and even wanted to be called Eugene from now on because of how much she helped him see the good in his true self.

@kristinahuchison2511
@kristinahuchison2511 6 күн бұрын
@@SpiderkillersInceh, I like Jasmine, but she never struck me as powerful just because she’s defiant and refuses to be treated as a pretty princess to be married off. I always felt Pocahontas and Merida pulled off the whole arranged marriage thing better. Ariel I will admit isn’t one of my favorites, but definitely see why so many people love her. Especially in the third movie (which I find underrated) she actually really cares about her sisters on a more personal level and how much their mother’s death affected their father. Ariel is the one who got him to realize how sad and heartbroken Athena would be if she saw music wasn’t allowed in Atlantica anymore, and ultimately helps Triton move past her death and become a better father for his daughters. But I think almost all Disney princesses and heroines like Esmerelda, Meg, Kida and so on all have strong qualities that prove they’re so much more than pretty girls looking for a man. Legit the ONLY one I can’t really stand is Aurora, and frankly I seriously don’t get why people like her and why she’s still pretty stinking popular. All she does is dream about falling in love, then cries over some dude she barely knows. We don’t even see her processing her learning she’s actually a princess and already betrothed to a prince. There’s no story with her finally meeting and bonding with her parents and how much the fairies mean to her because they raised her an a literal infant. I get she’s called Sleeping Beauty for a reason, but that doesn’t change Aurora really doesn’t have a personality, which was a huge reason why Sleeping Beauty was a disaster at the time. Anyways, another girl I’d mention would be Anastasia. Honestly I find her so much better than a lot of the more popular princesses. I just love her cynical and sarcastic personality, yet she is genuinely sweet and kind and is just trying to find herself and where she belongs in the world. She even gives up her royal title just to marry Dmitri instead

I think Anna's motivations are actually really nuanced and realistic. After years of neglect and the trauma of losing her parents, she's accepted that she isn't getting love from her family, so she immediately starts to search for ways to escape and prematurely latches onto the first person she thinks can give her the attention and connection she craves so much. I like Tangled way better than Frozen, but even I can admit that's much more interesting than "oh I wanna see these things cause I'm curious" (obvious oversimplification but yknow what I mean).

I think the problem with Frozen is more that it is less than the sum of its parts. The story telling is just messy and sometimes contradictary, while with Tangled every piece fits perfectly. The movies are kind of like their scores. I mean, Frozen has "Let it Go", and "Do you want to built a snowman", which are both real bangers, but the score as a while jumps from one style to another with no rhyme or reason and the contents fo the songs themselves don't really fit the story they are trying to tell all that well - and I can't express enough how much I HATE Fixer Upper. Tangled has only three stand-out pieces (I see the light, the healing incarnation and the score for the festival), but the rest are all solid pieces which do sound like they belong in the same soundtrack, and every single one of them moves the story forward or adds another layer to it.

The issue with that in my opinion anyway is that their parents kept them apart after Anna got icied in the head early in the movie. To keep it from happening again and to keep Elsa’s powers secret and keep her safe. But it backfired and that’s fundamentally why the movie happened. If Elsa had just been trained on how to use her powers without hurting anyone who knows how it would have turned out. And the trolls were evil for putting the thought in Elsa’s head that she was dangerous.

Tangled is one of the best films Disney has ever made. It is actually nearly flawless. The choreography, the beautiful animation, the execution of the story and depth of the characters sets it worlds apart from Frozen to me. All these years later I still love to watch it, and it still makes me tear up at the end sometimes. Even just LISTENING to I see the light can make me tear up. I can't say that for a lot of other movies, from any studio. The sad thing is that I was excited to watch Frozen because Tangled was SO good and it had similar design, but then it ended up being a huge disappointment for me. The plot and characters felt so much more contrived and empty to me, the music I mostly found annoying, I struggled to find things to like about it. I can agree that the vocal /performance/ was quite good, but the songs themselves I did not enjoy. It seems to me that most people like Frozen for its music, and that's the part I enjoyed the least.

Tangled has always been one of my favorite movies. Back when it came out, it was essentially the only thing I watched for months. The characters were so likeable, and I could almost see myself in some of them. I adored the two main protagonists (Flynn and Rapunzel), and the general asthetic of the setting(s) in the movie were almost calming to me. It was essentially just a combination of most of the things I liked back then Even now, I can't tear my eyes away from Tangled and I see new things and ideas in it nearly every time I watch it. I still absolutely adore it and it has to be my favorite movie of all time, if not at least in my top 5. It honestly makes me sad it's not more popular As for Frozen, it is nice and I like the movie, I even liked it back then, but it's nowhere close to how much I adore Tangled for pretty much all the reasons you mentioned. So, in my opinion, Tangled is better than Frozen, even though the popularity of Frozen far outweighs Tangled

While I agree with you about Tangled being superior, I think you misunderstood Anna’s motive in Frozen. It was pretty clear that her problem was loneliness in general. Deprived of her sister and best friend, she longs first for Elsa, then for the presence of other people, and then for a (nonspecific) romance, because she is essentially a people person who’s deprived of any real company for years. While Tangled is my favorite Disney movie, and I identify with Rapunzel’s situation far more than with Anna’s, I just wanted to straighten that one thing out.

What I find more surprising is that no one really talks about how Gothel managed to kidnap Rapunzel in the first place. She seems like a lone wolf, so its unllikely she recieved any help, and even if she did, she probably killed off her accomplices so she didnt have to share the baby's power. Gothel managed to do be a better thief than both Flynn Rider and the Stabbington Brothers, and the thing she stole (the baby princess), is more valuble, more guarded, and harder to carry than a crown, and she doesnt seem to display the same athletic physique as the Flynn and the two thieves either. Oh, and keep in mind she managed to keep her identity as a thief a secret as well.

You want it so bad, you will make it happen and/or 2) It was something so crazy, no one thought it possible, almost like a black swan event. Hence what seemed impossible, was actually very do-able. After she stole the baby, security around the castle was ramped right up.

Love to see this film being appreciated. The storytelling in it is top-knotch, and I think it had one of the best adaptations from the original material in how they decided to incorporate all the particular plot points. I'm thinking specifically about how the original Prince goes blind and regains his sight when he finds Rapunzel, and they decided to just turn that into an actual character arc for Flynn and move the "I See the Light" moment earlier in the narrative.

POV: Tangled was the last great Disney princess movie. I have never been able to sit through Frozen. In all fairness, I was always at somebody else's house at a gathering so that made it difficult to enjoy. Yet, there were always a couple of things that bothered me about the story. For one, it makes a point to denigrate the traditional fairy tale because of "unrealistic expectations" just to be edgy. Shrek already did that a million times better and in Frozen it just comes off as well... Off. Secondly, I was told that Frozen was a movie about family. At the beginning that theme didn't seem to fit for some reason. Instinctually I felt that something else was motivating the characters. It was more like two people going on a quest of self-discovery and then coming back to be a family at the end which isn't exactly the same thing. The twist villain was awful. I think the only reason that happened was that they didn't have a story nuanced enough to have no villain, but they already decided to make Elsa not evil and then they created the whole love triangle situation with Kristoff to denigrate love at first sight for no reason. So they made Hans evil because he was unfortunate enough to be the first handsome dude that Anna laid eyes on. Don't get me wrong, the whole sisterly love thing melting the ice is great. That is in keeping with the actual Hans Christian Anderson's Snow Queen. I just think it could have been executed much better. If the story had followed the original fairy tale more closely it would have been a much better story. Tangled was the last Disney Princess movie to actually respect the traditional fairy tale. Rapunzel is not some snarky strong woman who doesn't need a man, roaring like a tiger on top of mountains, she is a lovely kind, nurturing gentle lady, willing to sacrifice herself for the man she loves. And Eugine starts out as a selfish thief to a worthy man who flipping died to save Rapunzel. It has the perfect mix of modern characterization and respect for the original tale.

Great analysis while I do really like frozen tangled is by far my favorite Disney movie I can watch over and over and not get bored and I really like your point about how the story was not nuanced enough and you see that especially on rewatches but the part I don’t agree on is the whole “strong women who doesn’t need a man” thing. That is one of my favorite parts of both movies especially frozen. Elsa is one of the few Disney princesses to not have a love interest which I think is great because it shows young girls that they can be strong women and be independent. It also shows how a girl really doesn’t need a man which we see with Elsa, she is very good on her own now I don’t know how she would do with a love interest and that would definitely be awesome to see but if it did one day come the audience would know it would be because she loved her man and wanted him and not that she needed him. We see this with Ana, through out the story she of course has much help from kristoff but we se though out the two movies that she dose not need him but rather really loves him and wants to spend her life with him and the same for him. With Rapunzel we see and similar thing to Anna. I also really like your point about how frozen is suppose to be about family but in reality it greatly strays from that. We see both Anna and Elsa on there own journey and eventually those journeys merge but they were definitely motivated by separate things. Despite this I think the ending did do a good job about being back the family element. And back to the villain point, mother Gothel in Tangled was one of the best Disney villains I have ever seen. The way they were able to execute gas lighting and manipulation was brilliant. She did it in such a subtle yet impactful way that she genuinely influences Rapunzels thinking and gets her to question herself all the time. The scene where Rapunzel realizes that her relationship with mother gothel is not normal, is like the perfect representation of what gaslight can do and how detrimental it is. The realization got Repunzel someone who almost never defied her “mother” to hate her in a matter of seconds. It was amazing to see. Again great analysis you have some really good points.

Here's a long little diatribe about Disney villains. To start with, a lot of people forget that Disney can and has done good twist villains before. Back in those awkward in-between years after the renaissance, you had Claton in Tarzan, Commander Rourke in Atlantis, and Captain Long John Silver in Treasure Planet. The reason why these characters worked as twist villains in a way that today's versions don't is they are able to get the protagonists to act in a way that is counter productive to their best interest without them knowing it. So, not only do they gain and abuse their trust, but it forces the characters to interrogate their own morality and take accountability for how there are more important things then their wants and desires: 1. Tarzan wanted to get in touch with his humanity, but he _needed_ to protect the family that raised him; the resolution is a give and take from both sides which allows him to not have to choose between two parts of himself. 2. Milo wanted to prove his grandfather right and regain academic credibility for their family, but he _needed_ to protect the culture he was exploiting in order to do that; the resolution is him going against his employers and inspiring others to do the same. He finds satisfaction in doing right in and of itself, without needing to be validated by the outside world. 3. Jim wants the love and affection of a father figure, but he _needs_ to grow up and take responsibility for his own actions. He is seriously conflicted when the person offering him parental guidance turns out to not has his best interests at heart, but unlike John Silver, Jim unequivocally makes the choice to value the people in his life over material gain, or some abstract notion of adventure. You do not have this with modern Disney twist villains. Hans doesn't force Anna to grapple with her obligations to her heart or her obligations to her sister, he is solely there to deconstruct/represent the "can't marry a man you just met" vibe. Dawn Bellwether doesn't force the protagonists to deal with prejudice or go against their morals, it's just that their search for the culprit forces them to work together, and leads them directly to her. At best, you get someone like Yokai in Big Hero 6, where even if they don't really force the protag to make any tough choices, at least they serve as literary foils. And, in addition to my previous list, I would also argue that Gaston is a twist villain. Maybe like Ernesto De La Cruz, he's one you could see coming from a mile away, but it's still a twist. He treats Belle like a jerk but, so does the Beast when she first meets him. You don't really know he's a bad guy until he puts Maurice in the asylum, and even then, he's not really a "villain" until the very end, where he refuses to stop fighting the Beast even when he knows it's what Belle wants. He also doesn't follow the "force them to recon with their desires" thing, but unlike Hans, Gaston is maybe a better commentary on who you should and shouldn't be in a relationship with since... you know... he actually does weird shit that we can see that turns out to be a representation of even worse weird shit which is why you maybe shouldn't ignore those red flags and Belle handled the situation exactly how she should have right until the very end? Rather then being a foil for the protagonist too, he's a foil for the deuteragonist, the Beast. The reason why the Beast _is_ worthy of love is that, he encourages Belle's interests, is willing to work on his issues to be with her, and is not (or learns to not) be controlling of who she can and can't see. Gaston does none of these things throughout the film, and instead doubles down on his view of who Belle should be for him, even going as far as to convince an entire town that she's bewitched and not in her right mind just because she loves someone else. For a lot of these, I know you're going to have to search _really_ far back in your brain to see what I mean. I do too, because that's the thing with old twist villains. It's only a twist once, and part of what's good about these films is you can see their insidious behavior on a second watch whereas you couldn't before. They're used to highlight how seemingly innocuous behaviors can coerce, blind, and control us, which leads to the next few kinds of Disney villains. Broadly speaking, I'd say there's two or three more? And I won't spend as much time on these since they're more self-explanatory. Like, you have Maleficent, Hades, and Shan Yu who are unambiguously evil, and exist to thwart the protagonists. Then a smaller sub-set kind of category of this are transactional villains; one's like Ursula and Dr. Facilier make Faustian deals with the protagonists early on in the film that get the plot started and, again, force the characters to deal with the consequences of their actions and confront the want/need dichotomy. Then, there's the Mother Gothel tier of villains where they in fact _are_ twists, but only to the characters within the story. Others in this category include Scar, Judge Frollo, and Jafar. Notably, all of them have some kind of authority over the protagonists, often familial. This is my favorite category because it allows for a more direct deconstruction of all the tropes Disney thinks they're deconstructing with their twist villains. You also pull in that need v. want stuff, which modern Disney is sorely lacking in. Tangled had that though, and it was glorious. Rapunzel wanted to see the floating lights, but she needed to assert herself and get away from her abuser. Eugene wants to be a swashbuckling rouge, but he needed to be himself, and find something he valued more then money. There ain't really a conclusion to this, it's just food for thought, but there you go. If you made it this far, all that did something for you.

...I would disagree that those early twist villains worked other than Silver. The other two are so obviously evil that it is just hard to believe that the protagonists would fall for them. Also: Not much of a twist there for the audience, hence I am not sure if they even qualify as twist villains. (I agree though that the only twist villain Disney did so far which kind of work is Yokai and the only one which actually works well is King Candy).

Anna's jumbled motivation was actually her priorities slowly shifting away from Elsa. After Elsa shunning her so much, Anna believed that her only chance to get what she needs is from a man at that point. This was 3 years after their parents died. Being alone after a tragic event must have really messed up her mind, which we get to see how silly Anna really became for most of her movie. But I never forgot about Tangled. Tangled the Series releasing years later just solidified the Tangled franchise in my mind. I also don't know why people aren't talking much about Tangled for some reason.

Um. To be fair, Rapunzel never even saw another human her entire life, let alone was almost ALWAYS by herself with only Pascal as her companion and best friend. She doesn’t immediately crush on Flynn, if anything she gets annoyed when he tries flirting and sweet talking her into freeing him. And she kept smacking him with a frying pan! Anna at least had her parents and servants she could talk to, though her parents did a TERRIBLE job at parenting and refusing to at least try to explain why Elsa was basically off limits, almost like she was a porcelain doll. And she never even tried to at least understand from Elsa’s perspective why she was so afraid to talk about it. She literally gets mad at her when Elsa was trying to get her to open up in front of her entire kingdom, and it just made her a ton more nervous about harming so many people in a crowded ballroom. Anna screamed at her “No!! Why do you shut people out?! WHAT ARE YOU SO AFRAID OF?!?!” So imo Anna was kinda immature several times throughout Frozen, and acted like she knew everything as shown when she was telling Kristoff to shut up and pay attention when he was shocked by her willing to marry someone she only knew for like 2 hours. And then she’s like “Excuse me sir, he is a prince” Honey, princes in real life were fat ugly old people who got married for male heirs and political power, looking at you Henry VIII

I have said this many times but Flynn and Rapunzel are one of the best Disney couples. One of the main reasons is that they respect each other and get to know each other before getting married (watch the TV show to see what I mean). And instead of the man saving the girl (and the girl being in debt to him) the two save each other. Flynn saved Rapunzel from Gothel and she saved him from, well, death.

@@RyanBeane Have you seen his all Disney animated film ranking? I'm mostly satisfied with Tangled's rank, though I think it deserves to be ranked at maybe 7. It's my favorite movie and the only Disney movie I feel passionate about. I wish he liked it as much as Nostalgia Critic likes Frozen because to me that would have made up for him saying Frozen was one of his top 10 favorite Disney animated films, but had really nitpicky reasons for thinking Tangled is nothing special. I'm impressed how close my prediction of its rank was going to be. I thought it could be twelve and was thirteen. I don't understand his problem with how the art quality has aged, though, or why he seemed more passionate about this movie in the 2010's Disney animated film ranking. Tangled still looks beautiful to me and there were three years for technology to get advanced enough to age better for his standard after Tangled. I don't think that's a fair complaint. I really hope he reviews it next year. I hope that besides I see the light and I have a Dream, he also loves the reprises of When Will my Life Begin and Mother Knows Best, Kingdom Dance and Something that I Want. I don't know why a lot of people think the songs in Tangled aren't as good as some other Disney musicals, and especially enough to think this movie isn't exceptional.

When I first watched Tangled, it never stuck out to me and it was just an entertaining movie. But going back and rewatching both of them, you know the writers and creators of Tangled did something way better when you can watch a movie over and over and it STILL gives you the feelings. I rewatched Frozen and realized how bland and empty it was, and let's not talk about Frozen 2. Some movies age well, and sometimes you need to age a bit before understanding the deeper meaning and beauty behind things you watch or read.

I'll agree with you on every point until you said that Gothel is the best Disney villain to date. I enjoyed her, don't get me wrong, but Frollo is essentially a better version of her, with the gaslighting, better villain song, and twisting lies of the outside world. Also, Frollo killed someone on the Church steps and almost drowned a baby in the name of "Justice." He had power in the system the characters exist in, and it took Beelzebub himself to drag Frollo to hell to defeat him. There is really nothing more chilling in my mind than the image and line "And He shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the Fiery Pit!" Frollo genuinely believed that he was the hero in the story, that God was on his side. Gothel can't compare to that.
@kristinahuchison2511
@kristinahuchison2511 Жыл бұрын
I’m only agreeing Frollo was better because of how dark Hellfire was. To this day I’m still dumbfounded how the hell Disney didn’t have a problem with how adult this song was, considering the part Esmerelda is dancing in the flames had to be reanimated because it literally looked like she wasn’t wearing clothes, which is the point. Like it infuriates me how If I Never Knew You from Pocahontas was deemed “too mature” for children, and sadly that was a critical mistake to cut it and unfortunately tanked Pocahontas’s performance. But for whatever reason, a song about rape and lust didn’t even force the Hunchback of Notre Dame into a PG rating. Also, Frollo made it clear he hated Quasi with every fiber of his being, but manipulated him into believing he actually loved and cared about him, and no one would ever love a deformed monster like him. Which sadly felt so true when Esmerelda unknowingly broke his heart by kissing a smooth talking jerk. But Frollo even tried convincing him when she was seemingly dead that it was God’s plan, all while almost assassinating him. Its not until he thought he finally had Quasi and Esmerelda cornered he finally revealed how he truly felt about him and why, that he was by far the worst parent ever. If he hadn’t monologued the Bible into trying to seem like he was a saint doing the holy work of God, he would’ve killed them or broke the gargoyle they were hardly hanging onto and they’d burn in the molten copper. Legit even watching that scene as an adult with Frollo falling into the copper is so chilling because it looks like he’s literally falling into the lake of fire, aka hell. Which is exactly where he belongs. Honestly the sequel was a huge embarrassment to the point the villain is flat out insulting to how horrifying Frollo was. Like I really don’t get how he isn’t a more popular villain with how terrifying he truly is. He burned an entire city just to get laid

I wish I could be as generous as you were to Frozen, but honestly I feel like it's not even fair to compare Anna to Rapunzel as a protagonist. Frozen was such a hot mess in the writing department that I'm not even sure if Anna IS the protagonist. She doesn't actually have any kind of character arc and I feel like nobody really notices this?? Elsa barely had an arc too, but at least it's more than Anna. At the beginning of the movie, Anna loves her sister and wants a boyfriend. At the end of the movie, Anna...loves her sister and gets a boyfriend. Yep. She has learned nothing, and nothing about her changes from the character we were introduced to at the beginning of the movie. It wouldn't have even been that hard for the writers to fix this - all they had to do was add in a blowout between the two sisters in the first act (before Hans is even introduced) that ends with Anna being like "screw this, I'm so freaking lonely and I'm sick of waiting for you to get close to me again. Obviously you don't want a relationship with me, so I'm gonna find someone else to love me, BYE B*TCH" and then have THAT be her impetus for suddenly craving a boyfriend and giving up on her better judgement. There, movie fixed. (oh and also just remove Kristoff from the movie completely because literally his only role in the movie is being a big pointless distraction from the movie's central conflict) IMO what makes Tangled not only better than Frozen but THE most compelling Disney princess story to date is that the movie absolutely NAILS a legitimately realistic depiction of a very relatable conflict - someone experiencing, coming to terms with, and overcoming narcissistic abuse. Had the writers of Frozen taken their heads out of their marketing-obsessed asses and instead focused on writing the movie as two orphaned sisters learning how to trust each other again after their opposing responses to grief, THAT'S a movie that could have been as good as, if not better than Tangled. But that's not what we got, because 2013 was apparently the year that Disney just sorta....forgot how to write women. Like seriously, try to wrap your head around the fact that the studio that wrote Anna and Elsa is the same studio that wrote Lilo and Nani.
@farahahmad9239
@farahahmad9239 3 ай бұрын
I agree, that would make Frozen a lot better! I think the problem was the creators focused too much on marketing, making the snow queen and Anna very sympathetic, and on being edgy like DreamWorks.
@DSS712
@DSS712 3 ай бұрын
@@farahahmad9239 yeah, pretty much. This was the movie where Disney realized that they could make a lot more money on merchandise if they tell little girls that women are all perfect the way they are, "just like you are!" because writing women that occasionally make flawed judgements, just like any human being does, is just too "real" and that's not gonna sell lunchboxes. Writing Hans as the twist villain was a trick that the writers used to basically take all accountability off of Ana and Elsa to actually learn things or make difficult choices. Ana didn't have to LEARN that rushing into love is bad, twist villain Hans taught that for her by being evil! Elsa didn't have to LEARN that she has to overcome her fears and return to the kingdom, twist villain Hans simply drags her back to the kingdom, because he's evil! No protagonist accountability, no problem! No audience members being asked to reflect on themselves, more toys sold!
@farahahmad9239
@farahahmad9239 3 ай бұрын
That's unfortunate. Girls need to know that everybody makes mistakes both men and women and should change. I saw some animation tests of Anna and Kristoff where Anna was reserved and a bit snarky while Kristoff was affectionate and loving. Their personalities so much interesting in those tests! Why didn't they keep their personalities in the Final Cut? Yeah, if it weren't for Hans, the plot would have never happened. Not to mention I couldn't understand what was keeping Elsa from finally telling Anna the truth when they meet again as adults. The parents are gone, you are adults now, talk! The movie would have worked better as a cautionary tale if Anna did have to learn that rushing into love is bad. Maybe she learned that Hans was bad husband material. If the writers didn't like the idea of Anna being divorced, they could have Hans be killed off (they did so easily with the girls' parents) or have the couple get an annulment of their marriage. Maybe she wondered why she and Hans no longer felt those oney gooey feelings anymore after getting married. As for Elsa, the writers should have had some wise character tell Elsa to face her fears and she does this on her own accord; not because Hans dragged her back to the kingdom. @@DSS712
@DSS712
@DSS712 3 ай бұрын
@@farahahmad9239 the reason Elsa didnt tell Ana the truth is because her parents successfully traumatized her as a child, convincing her that she is an inherent danger to the person she loves the most. Which again, is why killing off the parents, just like making Hans evil, was a very intentional marketing decision. Parents ain't gonna go buying lunchboxes and toys based on characters that taught their children that parents can make poor judgements sometimes too!

I agree that Tangled had a better villain than Frozen. In the film, they were clear on who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. Mother Gothel was clear that she was bad but also had charm which made it easy why Rapunzel to think she was her mother. I don't mind twist villains as I have seen great ones like Stinky Pete and Lotso from the Toy Story saga, and Ernesto De La Cruz from Coco. The problem with Hans with Frozen was that there was no foreshadowing whatsoever and even if there was, it wasn't memorable nor did it make sense. Also, Flynn Rider got to fight! I'm not sure how popular Flynn is with boys but at least I can picture boys looking up to him just like they did with Aladdin and Hercules. And girls were crazy about Flynn, including me. Not to mention that Tangled had better romance than Frozen. Tangled took the time to develop the romance between Eugene and Rapunzel so that it would feel natural and believable. It also did a good job showing me what made Eugene love Rapunzel and why she loved him. I like that each took the time to get to know each other and they had great onscreen chemistry. In Frozen, Anna and Kristoff had no chemistry. They came off more like brother and sister that fight a lot rather than a couple. Because Anna spent almost the whole movie loving Hans and staying true to him, I found it hard to root for her and Kristoff. She had better chemistry with Hans than she did with Kristoff, who always brings the worst out of her. She's always mean to him and vice versa. Kristoff was mean to Anna but because she's so impulsive, flippant, and has poor listening skills, who wouldn't find her annoying? I too would have liked Frozen better if Anna and Hans did kiss but it doesn't work because they realized that they weren't really in love; it was just gas or a passing crush. After Frozen, I was hoping Disney would make a new movie with romance that is better than Frozen but sadly it never happened. Big Hero 6 was obviously an action/adventure film. Coco didn't count because not only was it about Miguel, but the Imelda/Hector romance didn't happen until Act 3. Before that, you were led to believe that Imelda was a divorced woman who was abandoned by Ernesto De La Cruz. Same with Encanto because not only was it about Mirabel but the Dolores/Mariano romance didn't happen until Act 4. Before that, you were led to believe that Isabella would be the one marrying Mariano. The closest I got to was Toy Story 4 which showed Woody and Bo getting back together, and it was satisfying.

I’d say if anything Rapunzel is very popular, given there’s a mini backpack by Loungefly I haven’t been able to buy because it outsold the day it came out. I’d say she’s probably in the top 3 most popular Disney princesses, and it’s largely because of Flynn Rider imo. Well …. Only thing I semi disagree with is Mother Gothel being the most terrifying villain. She comes milliseconds behind Frollo. For basically the SAME reasons. 😂

one word: soundtrack ,or even better songs. tangled's songs, while not bad like fizer up and summer ,they don't even come close to let it go and for the first time in forever, and yes I persobally don't like really rapuznel songs expect the villain?s one 8 I skip I have a dream and I see the light is BORING) ,the best and most memorable music score of this movie is " kingdom dance" ,an instrumental one ... do I mean is a worse movie than frozen? NO but the underwhemling songs, expect "mother knows best" , played for me a big part of THIS . As you said the songs are not catchy like in frozen or in disney reinnaisence also Disney TRICK us about the trope" girl always need and end up with a man" , because people didn't and still don't understand technically Anna is the protagonist ,becaus of Elsa, so when people saw Elsa without a ,man and being a queen felt disney destroyed the trope ...when actually they basically use disney's formula for Anna XD basically they made the mistake to made with tangled a clear love story when people didn't want it

I like frozen. It was cute. Tangled was better though. The majority of its characters were slightly better. And the side characters and villain, definitely so. Maximus was awesome, and pascal was… there. Lol He was still way better than Olof though. I know this is probably a controversial opinion, but I just really don’t like Olof. He annoys me.

I thought Frozen and Tangled were just average movies. Not bad, but nowhere compared to Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Aladdin

Nah. Only one I actually really love from the renaissance era is Lion King and Pocahontas. Tangled is so much better than Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin. Sorry but neither wowed me even as a kid

I mostly agree with everything, except it feels like you're too scared of the Frozen fans burning down your house to actually say what you think about the Frozen characters lol. I mean, valid I don't have such weaknesses though Olaf is annoying as heck, and even watching his shenanigans for the first time when I was a child did not make me laugh a single time. I know they were going for naive, but he just ended up dumb, which coinsidentally is HIS ENTIRE PERSONALITY Kristoff... oh boy. If for Eugene they asked the female staff, I somehow feel that not a lot of female and gay/bi people were invited to evaluate Kristoff. As a matter of fact, I think he is a straight guy fantasy of "she will love me as I am and I will not have to stop eating my own boogers, being rude and frenching a deer to score a princess". He strikes me as extremely unpleasant and the fact that they want to sell him as this dream guy is infuriating when just 3 years before that we got THE hottest piece of a/s on the market in the face of Eugene. Unbelievable Elsa doesn't have a personality at all. Good for her And Anna... she's fine actually. I mean, they basically copy-pasted Raps's whole character onto her, and with way less success, but at least she's less annoying than Olaf, way less gross than Kristoff and has SOME sort of personality which makes her infinitely better than Elsa If it was considered just another Disney movie, I'd be completely fine with it, but the fact that some people have the audacity to claim that it's better than Tangled really makes me hate it with passion Unfortunately, that started in my formative years, so I've based my entire personality around this pathetic squabble lmao
