Just listened to the song and it sounds like he was trying to make his own version of George Benson’s “Breezin’ “. GB’s tune came out in ‘76 and “Love Space” was released in ‘77.

These chord progressions are very popular chord changes. Good pop songs! Breezin is just 1 6 2 5 ... Maybe producer suggested to use that popular chord progressions and try not to play too jazzy! That was why that song was a hit!
