My friend had a Furby, he found out that if you turn them upside down they begin to scream. So he decided he would leave it upside down until it screamed itself to death... Years later I began reading about Japan's Unit 731 during WW2. They were a Biological & Chemical Warfare unit that conducted their research on Chinese POW's. I know comparing atrocities is a silly thing to do, but they're RIGHT up there with the worst of the worst. They referred to their subjects as 'Logs' as a way to dehumanise them. Anyhow one of their famed experiments was very similar, turning a 'log' up-side down and leaving 'it' that way until 'it' expires. After that I could never break the connection in my head.

@cyanity1017 Жыл бұрын
@@leedlelel2373 honestly I think it's scarier when something you think is inhuman shows a genuine human emotion. it's like in portal 2 when glados gets removed from her body, you hear genuine pain from her screams making it extremely unsettling, cause it means this robot feels emotions, or even worse, pain. Even in a game like FNAF SB it's scary with the shattered animatronics, cause you hear them crying in pain, and begging for their parts back. So Mama tattletail getting angry is actually equally scary because this thing you thought was just like an animal hunting you down has emotions and understands you enough to respond to the joke, Meaning it knows what it's doing, it's not just protecting it's young. Or if we're going by the "don't leave me!" Line, it could be doing it for another reason. Whether it says it as a manipulation tactic, or if it's genuine, it's still scary.

As many others have said, this story really comes off as an allegory for somebody processing childhood trauma, specifically around an event that happened on Christmas. This is definitely indicated by a lot of Tattletale’s lines “You’re in big trouble” “I know what you did” and then the secret lines in the void “How could you do this? You ruined everything” These sound like things an angry parent would say to their kid, possibly just before or during the abuse. This could either have been in response to breaking the vase or her discovering that the child already opened their present early. Even the name of the toy, Tattletale, could be indicative that the child didn’t know how to turn it off, so it gave away to the mom that they had opened the gift early. Then the Kaleidoscope episode implies that perhaps they were gaslit into believing a different version of that time that was nicer. The person in the letter could either be the sibling, trying to talk about what really happened, or perhaps a therapist.
@Sunnysideup42011 ай бұрын
I think the letters might be the protagonist themself except they’re older and trying to process trauma. Considering how they talked about going in the kaleidoscope as well. This could also represent how, in life, we can get trauma from all sorts of people or events, because of the experiences with go through. Genuinely I think the allegory of childhood trauma from an abusive parent just makes me love the game more
@grlsneverdie11 ай бұрын
alsoo!! when you leave the kalideoscope, mama keeps saying “ i love you so much “ as if shes trying to guilt trip protag into staying with her. another detail i noticed is that since tattletail makes noise when it wants something and noise is associated with mama finding and jumpscaring you, it could also allude to neglect in which the protag’s mother is not very keen to taking care of them. or maybe im projecting my own trauma but yeah

it would also explain the absence of the parents of the child in the entire story and how, if you knock on the door during one of the nights, the door opens and mama is there and jumpscares you the child has had such a distorted sense of reality due to the abuse and trauma that they no longer see their parents as themselves but instead as a nightmarish representation of something that the protagonist finds comfort in (tattletail). the failed ritual in the base game could also be a metaphor for how people often end up sweeping trauma under the rug which causes it to resurface at some point in the future (in this case, mama tattletail jumpscaring you on christmas most likely represents your inability to overcome the trauma) also, i find it much more likely that tattletail isnt actually speaking or even alive, you do have to remember that the protagonist is probably somewhere between 3 to 6 years old here and children have a tendency of imagining their toys as being living beings. my explanation for the ''noise going up when the food bar goes down'' is probably the child themselves being hungry and as a result crying, which attracts the attention of the abusive parent. also i definitely think that the letters are from the future version of the protagonist looking back on these memories after a couple years and trying to process them (hence, the eggs lead to the good ending where you can remember your past properly and overcome it, atleast if you exclude the kaleidoscope dlc. i assume its some kind of memory thing where the person can be like ''oh there was an egg on top of the washing machine'' which allows them to more easily remember certain events, hence why it leads to the good ending) i think the kaleidoscope dlc most likely represents an alternative of the bad ending of the base game but instead of the trauma resurfacing, it instead recedes and the child's brain gaslights itself into thinking that their childhood was good and they have to remember what actually happened (this may also explain the letters talking about ''going through the kaleidoscope'' already, as we can assume that the base game is the protagonist's first attempt at trying to remember their past and failing, hence the bad ending and then retrying at a later point to remember it, which is where the kaleidoscope dlc comes in) but yeah this is all just theorizing and my 1 AM ramblings, would love to hear other people's opinions though if they have the patience to read through the entire essay i just made lmao

Ignoring the kaleidoscope I always preferred the head canon that the whole experience was just a series of guilt fueled nightmares after sneaking around and opening your present early. It would just make so much sense to me with the strange focus on the door to the child's mother's room, the fact that it all takes place at night, the not supernatural but still unusual things like the front door being wide open and just not addressing it or feeding a toy real frood, and the whole game being about not getting tattled on to mama. It would really work if it was all just symbolic of the child's guilt and fear of getting caught but seen through the filter of a child's mind

My interpretation of the Kaleidoscope is that its supposed to be the kid trying to remember 1998 Christmas after growing up, The notes are being written by the grown up version of the kid trying to "communicate" with his younger self, trying to remember how he had fun with Tattletail as a child in the past because in the present he only remembers him as a boring toy. Also the presence of the cassette that explains the waydrives stands out to me because thats not something a kid would usually hear, its more like an employee training video, I think this means that after growing up the kid got a job at waygetter and only saw Tattletail as a boring product of the company, which is also why Boring Tattletail has the "pizza slice" eye. The events of the Kaleidoscope are the kid having a nostalgia moment.

That makes a lot of sense, and is my new fav hc for it

Wait, what if the person remembers Tattletail as a boring toy and the reason for going through the Kaleidoscope is for the grown up version of the kid to relive his childhood memories. I think it symbolizes the idea that when people grow up, they leave behind the toys they used to love playing with as a kid, since they're getting older.

If Tattletail ever comes back, I'll scream. Official merchandise, Books, Artbooks, anything. I'd eat it UP. I would BUY it so fast. I loved this game so much. It's a staple in my childhood, however with how little I see of it, I don't appreciate it as much as I want to. I used to play a Tattletail-based game on Roblox constantly because of how much I admired them game, but couldn't have it for myself. Even if it was a roleplay game and it's not even Tattletail anymore. Which I honestly really wish it was. I love the new models, and the new stuff, but I will forever miss the Tattletails we had in that game. Regardless of how bad the developer is according to sources. I think they almost had an ARG, but they-- stopped. Probably due to the loss in popularity. I think the Kaleidoscope was an effort to revive the game, but it had no announcements that it even existed, it just literally popped up. Which didn't go the game's falling popularity much good. But regardless, this game is a game that should've been a bigger staple in horror. It deserved way more than it got.

My first thought as you went through the story was how memories of abuse can become warped with time with denial in order to cope. Kids can come up with some pretty terrible stuff during playtime, and it can be indicative of their home lives, hence why it's suggested that teachers pay attention when kids are playing in school or in other places. I noticed how every single one of the toys, except for Mama, had nearly identical voices. I know that's intentional if they're mass-produced toys, but in the theory it could be related to how kids only *sometimes* put on voices, and that they usually sound pretty similar. And the warped version at the end could be the result of Mama trying to gaslight the child/ren into thinking that they only had happy times, and the abuse didn't happen. When they resist, symbolized by going into the Kaleidoscope and retrieving the genuine memories, she gets angry because it doesn't work.
@IJustAnimateThatsTheJist Жыл бұрын
That could also explain her pleading at the end of the game addon as well. Her suddenly pleading as the character retrieves and escapes with their true memories could symbolize her being caught and the abuse on the children being proven, so after exhausting all of her other options of maintaining control of the situation, she resorts to the "Please come back! I swear I'll never do it again! I didn't mean to hurt you." manipulative phrases they'll use to keep their victims firmly in their grasp. It also explains how obviously disingenuous her doing so is. Only when you're safely away from her is when she tries to be loving and comforting yet when she's nearby she resorted to using violence and fear to get what she wanted from you. The theory is pretty interesting.

Also, to forgot to say, Mama Tattletail may also be inspired by Teddy Ruxpin. Also, I just realised from when you were talking about how Mama is telling you noise will attract her. This put into words for something I've always felt. Tattletail feels different, like classic FNaF, it's just trying to tell a story in the most bizarre way. Tattletail almost feels like the experience of *finding* found-footage horror rather than just seeing or playing found-footage games. I guess I also have this weird nostalgia for it, since this (and Little Nightmares) got me into the horror genre. While I do wish for more answers on what's going on, what happened to the characters family, why the Tattletails are alive and WHAT is Waygetter? I think it's good by itself and the mystery is just given enough answers to feel ok, but vague enough that curiosity itches my head every once in a month or so. (Also the aesthetic of Waygetter is so enticing to me for whatever reason)

Honestly, I sometimes still think about Tattletail. It started off as being a simple horror game that seemed to follow Fnaf 4 but with free roam. It was an amazing game, but The Kaleidoscope didn't really give the game the chance it needed. Let alone the DLC didn't really make much sense to me when I first played it, but it was pretty cool. If Tattletail comes back by some miracle, I think the plot should revolve around how Tattletail isn't really popular anymore, and it faded out of popularity. You play as a toy collector who finds a Tattletail, but little do you know it's a fight for survival. Overtime, you start to learn the story of why Tattletails are no longer made, and why Mama Tattletail was banned. There was originally meant to be a little series of Tattletail for KZbin, like what Hello Neighbor did, but all we got was some promotional art, and it never saw the light of day again. Dawko played it again a while ago, but I doubt that'll make it popular again. Tattletail was one of those things that had a good run, but it didn't deserve to die out like it did.

Personally, I believe the story of tattletale is an alegory for an abusive parent. Likely mother. And the siblings coming together to go away from her. The colidoscope chapter is about the good times, or the times youre told, or mother tells, thus making you wonder if the abuse happened.

@entothechesnautknight1762 Жыл бұрын
I do like how openly... Odd the game is. Especially the DLC. Way too many mascot horror games either lean too far into absurdism or too far into providing a decently clear explanation, I like that tattletale just gives you the scenario, and just enough information that you aren't lost or wondering why you're even doing this. Some weird shit happened on Christmas in 1998. The company did something weird, and though they didn't intend it, you're now in danger. And now, years later, someone's tampered with your memory of it in your dreams. And someone else is here to help you, as much as they can. It's connected to 1998, but it's probably not directly. And Mama's ghost is still around, having a grudge for very obvious reasons. There's obviously a lot more under the surface here that we just don't know about, but nothing that really makes the story hard to follow for the sake of being "mysterious" or obtuse. Things can be interpreted many ways, but not so many it becomes pointless to think about. Things are unclear, but not vague. Tattletale is a game that's stuck with me for years after watching it 6 years ago. Now I can see why.

What I love about tattletail is how it stays true to being in the perspective of a child. It is just you, your flashlight, and a nagging fur- I mean, tattletail. You can find and collect gifts to give to other “ Neons “, and the preferred gift of one of them, Neon Violet, is a Tattletail toy. My theory is the kid has ptsd or some crazy shit like that, but yk ofc telling ur parents "mom I have ptsd because tattletail's mom tried to kill me and then I watched him and his friends banish her to oblivion" Is gonna make you look insane so they put him on meds and so now he barely remembers any of the shit that happened and escaping the kaleidoscope thingy at the end is basically the kid reliving his memories

I don’t even have to watch this video to say: Everyone was terrified of Furby’s as a kid… It was only a matter of time before some genius finally took that recipe for disaster and gave us this terrifying game.

I was scared of furbies as a kid but as an adult I think they're cute in that creepy-cute sort of way.
@emstink Жыл бұрын
I was never terrified of furbies, I thought they were so adorable and wanted to look after them. Even when one of my furbies mouth/beak skin peeled of his face because I kept turning his skin inside out, I still loved him, and that didn't stop me pulling the beak skin of my _other_ furbys! Sure, when batteries got low, his speech slurred and stuttered - that just meant I wasn't loving him well enough!! That meant it was time for the ritual sacrifice: one of my _less_ favourite furbies would be picked based on how little they'd appeased me that month, then I'd swap their life sources, inserting it into my *favourite* so he could keep fluttering his eyelashes and begging for more love for a little while longer. Whenever I'd go out, obviously bringing my favourite with me, I'd put the others in a circle so they wouldn't be lonely and I _knew_ it worked, because when I'd come home, they'd all be chatting "lalalalalala 😊", "I'm hungry 😡" "feed me 😡" "tummy rumbling 😡" "hahaha! 😊". So cute!! Eventually when the baby furbies came out, I thought I'd trained _my_ furbies well enough that they could emulate me and care for the smaller creatures, so I added a few to the middle of the circle. To my massive disappointment, ALL of them continued to beg for food, sing, cry, and sleep, while the baby furbies cried in the middle. I was so disgusted with my now supposedly "adult" (although now I'll admit they would've pinky been teenagers in furbyland and it's rude to expect teenagers to be responsible for new babies) furbies, that I locked them all in the cupboard under the stairs. Despite their incessant complaints, I ignored them all and focussed on my babies. But my love for them was tainted by my disappointment, clearly it was my parenting skills that were the problem, so I neglected them and eventually let a friend 'adopt' them. Over the months, the sounds in the cupboard slowly died out, the final, faint, slurred "I'm scared" before I completely forgot about them. I found them about 6 years ago while moving out and wondered wtf was wrong with me as a child.

@@emstink sounds like you had the 2007 furbies since those are the only ones with "skin". I own one and I pinned a pin on his chest with a t-rex on it that says "if you're happy and you know it, clap your . . oh." Because y'know, t-rex's have really tiny arms. And furbies have none lol

@@CasualVFlowerEnjoyer I did wonder since every time I search up furbies, they have those horrid hard beaks lol, I thought maybe it was a UK thing, but 2005-2007 edition makes sense. I looked them up and they were called Emoto-tronics - definitely not a name kids would remember! I forgot the baby ones had giant Bigfoot legs, I think I found those ones kind of grotesque in comparison with the 'adult' ones, maybe that's why I never loved them as much lol. That's cute lol! I hope your one is still alive, I think all of mine are dead beyond repair since I'd left the batteries in. I remember seeing the 2013 furbies and being really disappointed that they were so horrendously ugly. Plastic ears and flat plastic eyes. No potential there, for either scaring or loving lol

@@emstink Mine are all still in working condition, thankfully. Except for my tyedye 1998 furby but he came to me not working. I've been meaning for quite some time now to try repairing him, since the early furbies are supposedly quite easy to repair as long as it isn't a circuit board issue. I have two English OG furbies and one French OG furby, along with an OG baby furby, 2007 furby and the first edition of the more modern furbies. Personally my favorite is my OG French boy, Dah. I think the main thing that has kept them working for so long is, I always take out their batteries when I'm done loving on them. Also I've heard a lot of horror stories of furby parents leaving batteries in their furby that end up leaking and corroding their insides. There're really no repairing that so its a phobia of mine now. Edit to add;; I was also disappointed by the newer furbies. Not so much because of the plastic parts, those don't bother me. I didn't like that their gimmick is that they change to a number of pre-set personalities depending on how you interact with them. The thing I love about older furbies is that they all have their own unique personality kinda like a real pet. There are things that each of my older furbies do that the other older furbies don't do as much. Like Dah for example, he loves sleeping and he always comments on how sunny/bright a room is. The newer furbies' personalities are so shallow, predictable and soulless. And if you do one particular thing too many times, like petting or feeding, they might swap to a new personality. So any friendship you may have gained at all is squashed because your friend just became a totally different person.

Never could play horror games myself, but for whatever reason I find let's plays of them and deep dives into them entertaining to watch, and Tattletail way back in the day was one of the more interesting ones for sure. Despite being a clear parody of one property and inspired by another property, it still manages to come across as very genuine and heartfelt and clever, plus a bit of a sense of humor. Seeing them up that for the first time in DLC is really nice, honestly.

I really like that people keep bringing up tattletail lately, it makes it clear that the games still loved and appreciated. Even if its not in a huge spotlight anymore. Edit: I ALSO LIKE HOW YOU ACTUALLY KNOW THE TATTLETAILS NAMES, THAT IS BEAUTIFUL

The director of Tattletale, Ben Esposito, has actually worked on a number of really cool projects like Neon White, Donut Country, and my favorite, the Arcane Kids. It does kinda fit that this dude worked on Sonic Dreams Collection and Bubsy Visits the James Turrel Retrospective. Id definitely check out his other stuff.

It starts with one thing I don't know why It doesn't even matter how hard you try Keep that in mind I designed this rhyme To explain in due time All I know Time is a valuable thing Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings Watch it count down to the end of the day The clock ticks life away It's so unreal Didn't look out below Watch the time go right out the window Trying to hold on, didn't even know I wasted it all just to watch you go I kept everything inside And even though I tried, it all fell apart What it meant to me Will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried so hard And got so far But in the end It doesn't even matter I had to fall To lose it all But in the end It doesn't even matter One thing, I don't know why It doesn't even matter how hard you try Keep that in mind I designed this rhyme To remind myself how I tried so hard In spite of the way you were mocking me Acting like I was part of your property Remembering all the times you fought with me I'm surprised it got so Things aren't the way they were before You wouldn't even recognize me anymore Not that you knew me back then But it all comes back to me in the end You kept everything inside And even though I tried, it all fell apart What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried so hard And got so far But in the end It doesn't even matter I had to fall To lose it all But in the end It doesn't even matter I've put my trust in you Pushed as far as I can go For all this There's only one thing you should know I've put my trust in you Pushed as far as I can go For all this There's only one thing you should know I tried so hard And got so far But in the end It doesn't even matter I had to fall To lose it all But in the end It doesn't even matter

I could not appreciate this more, Tattletail was THE game for me years ago and it still is, it will always have a special place in my memories. Also you just reminded me of how I used to play some Tattletail rp game on roblox because I was so starved of content about the game😭 It was actually fun tho, that was the last time I ever saw Tattletail fans before the game dissapeared from public attention until now, thank you for making this game kinda relevant once again, and also for showing it to people who might not know about it, it really means a lot for me, thank you man❤️

i usually consider this game to be the last truly scary mascot horror game. it just makes me even more confused thinking about how it got forgotten even tho it had everything going for it. i’m glad that it seems like it’s getting a resurgence during this period of mid mascot horror games. (except for bendy and the dark revival cuz that one was actually good)
