Hey, I'm the owner and lead developer for the Penguin Games server. A few comments from my own observations dealing with this: - I am not happy about the player counts either - When player counts are low, it causes a self-perpetuating death spiral where people join the server, see that the lobby for their favorite game isn't active, and then leave. Basically the only thing that helps revive player count is for the player count to be revived. - "Just add more games" is easier said than done. Our dev team is small and we already have like 30 different gamemodes. From my view, we have had a pretty bad scope creep problem, and personally I'd rather prioritize quality over quantity. Any time a dev spends on a new gamemode could be spent adding new content or fixing bugs for an existing gamemode. At least that's my view of it; of course I wouldn't want players to get bored with what's there but I think we have quite a bit of content right now. - The game hub being obscure is kind of intentional because I wouldn't want lobbies to be spread too thin, so we hope that concentrating players in a smaller selection of rotating gamemodes provides a better experience. I'd love to make all gamemodes playable at all time but we don't have the player counts for that, and we didn't even when we were at our peak. - COVID helped us a lot, but unfortunately I can't cause a new pandemic to make my Terraria server more popular again :(. - Another factor is that KZbinrs don't cover us as often because Terraria server videos don't do as well in the algorithm. I assume that viewers don't care to hear about it because they don't even know what's out there. - Yes, ReLogic has chronically neglected this scene. I would love to see an ingame server list. - Map size variation in Spleef is supposed to be coming soon!

The answer why ppl don't play multiplayer is simple: in Minecraft, there's almost nothing to in the game, while multiplayer provides some communication and fun activities with friends, while in Terraria you have access to excess amounts of solo content and fun activities which is why multiplayer always seems redundant besides a small group of friends playing coop.

To be honest, I disagree with it being easy to play with your friends. I think it can be hard to play and commit to a terraria world (especially if you're older). For people like me, hanging out on a server sounds great.

@@evandrofilipe1526 Fair enough committing to a world is a lot of effort, and sometimes you dont have the time or willingness to do so. Minecraft's servers are a lot more convenient if you just want to chill with friends and have a good time. I wouldn't say that terraria is hard to play with friends tho, just that it has a different appeal. Minecraft is good if you just want to have some fun for a little bit, and not think about it too much. I'd say that terraria is more if you want to have a bit more depth to it. both are good games tho

Hi! I am the lead admin & developer from Terraria Minigames server. In Terraria, the servers are really poorly adapted. There is no good API like in Minecraft. There is nothing to attract the attention of players to the servers. And if a player has joined the server, it is difficult to keep him. For example, we have been thinking for a long time about making it as easy as possible for players to adapt to the server. KZbin only helps, but it is not always possible to get a video from a major youtuber ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A lot of people play multiplayer in Terraria, just not a lot on public servers. Public servers don't have nearly as much potential as, say, a game like Minecraft. However, a playthrough with friends or even just random strangers you find online and start a groupchat with is and will be one of the most magical things you’ll experience in a game. Minecraft playthroughs are often isolated even on multiplayer servers due to lack of any incentive to stick together especially because of the mob limit making the game easier than it already is when there are lots of people online, while having someone to base with would more often than not lead to betrayal or getting targeted than a peaceful experience, and the progression ends really fast with mostly mindless grinding making up the majority of the game, so after just a few days you will have no reason to remain on the survival server other than build structures or do certain community events to stave off boredom from lack of stuff to do. Meanwhile in Terraria there are certain things like boss fights with the bosses scaling in stats to how many players are online, that encourages players to stick together and take down the threat. Going your separate ways is rarely a good idea when venturing into the unknown, as the evil regions and underground jungle will lead to a lot of pain and having one friend with you ensures a safety net for any coins or items you may lose on death, which is quite common in Terraria due to the obscene difficulty spikes on higher difficulties. Basically, what it boils down to, is that Minecraft, due to its limited progression, becomes a lot more competitive due to players being the main threat in a much more peaceful environment than Terraria, which has an emphasis on cooperation against an extremely hostile environment, where players are either already competing against the eldritch horrors plaguing the land, or are at a point where they are literally so powerful that attacking each other will just lead to both players oneshotting each other before either side has the slightest chance to evade or perform game-changing outplays leading to one's victory. This makes Minecraft a better experience on public servers where there is constant competition, but Terraria a better experience on private multiplayer playthroughs due to its co-op being actually meaningful. In Minecraft, you band together to kill a rivaling group over control of the world spawn. In Terraria, you band together to kill f*cking elder gods and destroy planets with full auto firework launchers that shoot f*cking nukes.

Hi, I am the founder and sole developer of Eternia. It is obvious that Terraria is simply not designed for large scale public multiplayer servers. All of the solutions we have now: TShock, plugins, automatically refilling all items areas, lobby switching, etc. are achieved as a result of reverse-engineering Terraria. Using hacky techniques to patch the Terraria server assemblies and hook our own code into it, in combination with decompilation of the game’s source code to figure out how mechanics are implemented so we can extend/modify them as best we can in a server-sided fashion. The whole premise of these big public servers exists on the basis of community developers trying to push the game’s limited multiplayer capabilities to the extreme. When you open a server up to beyond your group of friends, you open it up to malicious actors, and Terraria’s protocol and error tolerance/correction is not robust in the slightest when exposed to the vast array of exploits that exist, because this is simply not the intended use case. Re-Logic does not provide public documentation. Re-Logic does not provide public developer tools like SDKs or a server-side modding API. It’s obvious that support for large Minecraft-style public multiplayer server networks was never meant to be part of the product. The Terraria server developer community has requested certain protocol changes and minor additions (such as SSC), and Re-Logic has however obliged. We were the ones who chose to push it to its limits, beyond what was intended. For Re-Logic to make public multiplayer servers robust and act on these highlighted issues would be a massive commitment at the behest of our entitled expectations. It would add longevity to the game to really flesh out multiplayer and build a more solid foundation for our creativity as Terraria server developers, but I think at this point they might as well rectify it in “Terraria 2”.

Well Terraria is a full game and doesn't need anything to make it worth playing Minecraft lacks content, SEVERELY lacks content. You can't not play on servers to enjoy the game. Even if you do play on servers in Terraria you play co-op with your friends(by hosting it) not on some server having minigames completely unrelated to the game itself. I say this as a non-enjoyer of those things. Nobody buys Terraria for playing mini games in servers not Minecraft either but the visibility in the server list helps Minecraft servers while people stop playing the Terraria once they get bored of it but when Minecraft players get bored they see the server right there and start playing it

I think my problem is that Terraria servers often focus too much on how Minecraft's servers work and they try to adapt them in this game. Sometimes it does work, but a lot of the time I feel like it's not nearly as good in Terraria. I love Terraria multiplayer, but what makes the game fun for me is the exploration and progression, and a lot of servers just simply lack that. I think stuff like minigames are just simply not nearly as fun due to Terraria's limitations in its 2D world, but I think it has potential for stuff like PVP, survival or maybe some kind of leveling system. I think many servers don't quite focus on what people like the most in the base game itself, but it's hard to do so due to the limitations put on servers.

Long ago, approximately a decade long, I joined a very populated server with a friend, and started playing PvP. Once fighting with random people, some overpowered player appeared and killed me almost instantly various times. Then, I hit them with my sword (An Excalibur I guess?) and the game froze for like five seconds, then I saw the numeric pop ups of how much damage I made to them and it was an extremely high count, then I got instantly kicked. When I tried to enter again, it said that I was banned and that "we don't tolerate hackers here". So I suppose somebody hacked my damage to get me banned or that the game bugged, and the server automatically banned me after detecting such impossible quantity of damage. That's my funny little story with online PvP in Terraria.

@@ShardonOkI'm not gay, because my name is Walter Hartwell White. I live at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87104. This is my confession. If you're watching this tape, I'm probably dead- murdered by my brother-in-law, Hank Schrader. Hank has been building a meth empire for over a year now, and using me as his chemist. Shortly after my 50th birthday, he asked that I use my chemistry knowledge to cook methamphetamine, which he would then sell using connections that he made through his career with the DEA. I was... astounded. I... I always thought Hank was a very moral man, and I was particularly vulnerable at the time - something he knew and took advantage of. I was reeling from a cancer diagnosis that was poised to bankrupt my family. Hank took me in on a ride-along and showed me just how much money even a small meth operation could make. And I was weak. I didn't want my family to go into financial ruin, so I agreed. Hank had a partner, a businessman named Gustavo Fring. Hank sold me into servitude to this man. And when I tried to quit, Fring threatened my family. I didn't know where to turn. Eventually, Hank and Fring had a falling-out. Things escalated. Fring was able to arrange - uh, I guess... I guess you call it a "hit" - on Hank, and failed, but Hank was seriously injured. And I wound up paying his medical bills, which amounted to a little over $177,000. Upon recovery, Hank was bent on revenge. Working with a man named Hector Salamanca, he plotted to kill Fring. The bomb that he used was built by me, and he gave me no option in it. I have often contemplated suicide, but I'm a coward. I wanted to go to the police, but I was frightened. Hank had risen to become the head of the Albuquerque DEA. To keep me in line, he took my children. For three months, he kept them. My wife had no idea of my criminal activities, and was horrified to learn what I had done. I was in hell. I hated myself for what I had brought upon my family. Recently, I tried once again to quit, and in response, he gave me this. [Walt points to the bruise on his face left by Hank in "Blood Money."] I can't take this anymore. I live in fear every day that Hank will kill me, or worse, hurt my family. All I could think to do was to make this video and hope that the world will finally see this man for what he really is.
@DaRkLoRdZoRc
@DaRkLoRdZoRc 5 ай бұрын
Okay, these are all valid, sensible observations and whatnot, but here's my problem with the way this video is laid out: I don't *care* about any of this stuff. An outdated UI? Dude, I'm not a zoomer. I haven't had my brain destroyed in utero by Tiktok and Cocomelon. I was playing Minecraft in like 2012 when it was *free* and the multiplayer UI looked like Terraria's, where you had to manually enter IP's to connect to a server. Who cares about the screen being pretty? Google exists. The number keys on your keyboard exist. Figure it out. Lack of custom content? I want to play Terraria. I don't want to play parkour or fucking spleef or 'look at my screen-filling build that has no practical application' or whatever. I'm probably WAY in the minority here, but I hate multiplayer servers that take these kinds of big, open sandbox games and compartmentalize them down into layers upon layers of neatly organized geographic menus I have to navigate. I just want to explore and occasionally interact with another person. And Terraria worlds barely cover a few square miles. What am I supposed to do in a server where every available block has already been claimed, mined, explored, and prettied up? LOOK at it for a few minutes before leaving? And that brings me to the main issue of Terraria's multiplayer: progression. Again, probably the minority here, but what most people consider to be Minecraft's greatest strength, I consider to be a glaring weakness that quickly leads to boredom, tedium, and ultimate abandonment: its sheer versatility and lack of rigidity. In Minecraft, I can essentially 'win' in a couple of hours by building a simple box house, mining down to bedrock, exhuming enough diamonds for armor and an enchanting table, and that's it. There's not much more to do. There's only 2 or 3 bosses, and only one of those bosses gives you gamechanging loot (the Elytra). However, this playstyle actually suits multiplayer kind of well, because it's easy to jump in at any time. You won't really miss anything because ultimately most of the Minecraft MP experience is PvP, not PvE. You want to join a faction? Kay, there's a fresh plot of land, start digging or planting crops or whatever you want to do. Terraria, however, is the opposite: There's a very clear sense of progression. You can deviate from or ignore the intended boss order to an extent, but if you jump into a server where your friends have already beaten the Wall of Flesh and you have no equipment, you're kind of screwed. You either die over and over to enemies and bosses that are far too strong for you as you try and play catch-up the normal way, or you have to use everyone else's hand-me-downs in order to get onto the same level as them, which essentially eliminates a large chunk of the experience for you. Even just missing a couple of bosses can leave you crippled or cost you a portion of the game that you really enjoy. Speaking of which, Terraria's player numbers put the game's servers in an awkward state as well. More players means better chances of success and more possible ways of playing sure. But they also mean that the already-limited world becomes smaller and smaller as all the treasure chests, Life Crystals, and various other goodies are found and taken, leaving less and less for any latecomers. Eventually, you're going to have to either scour the far corners of the world for what little loot remains to be found, or you have to start fishing, and unless you're some sick, mentally defective individual that probably has people locked up in their basement, *nobody* wants to go fucking fishing in vanilla Terraria. Now I'm not saying I'd be averse to a progressionless Terraria server that's just one giant golf course or maybe in a constant PvP war mode like how Ace of Spades used to be before its developers gutted it. I get that Terraria's built-in progression will probably only last an average multiplayer server a week or so at the maximum. I just wish it wasn't so hard to find such servers in the wild. If I had friends to set up a server and play the standard game with, I'd probably be doing something _other_ than playing a 15 year-old building block game with them.

NOOOOOOOOOO MY 5000 HOURS ON THIS SERVER AND I WASNT IN THE VIDEO NOOOOOOOOO ok though seriously i thank you a lot for this video. i love this server a lot, the memories, the people, the skills i have developed, my personality forged from this server. i do agree a lot with the points you've made in this video. multiplayer ui is horrendous and joining a server is like pretty hard. though i'd like to add some of my own points for why the server was dying (i was there before the rise, during the peak, the downfall of it all) 1. there's hardly any publicity from external sources (thank you for making this video) 2. theres a bit too good players that discourages new players. (im looking at you solar lums) 3. during 2021, there was a lot of cool af events such as echomaze, cryptorunes, coordhunt, and a lot of hosts. this kept a lot of people on the server, and thus more people that came in, stayed because of this. 4. LAG IS FRICKING HORRIBLE. lag is such a big factor on ruining the server experience. what happened in that cctg match of yours was that the guy probably had 500ms and so when u hit him, he took damage from your screen yes, but on his, only half a second later (500ms) only then he takes damage. and ONLY after he takes damage on his screen then you can damage him again. thats all i have to say though, congrats to ml piace, ponky, deer to be in the video those are my friends oh god i regret not staying up to the 3 am to play in this server and be IN THE DAMN VIDEO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Yeah, point 2 is solvable with skill based matchmaking and point 4 is solvable by splitting the server into multiple regions (like a US host and an EU host). However for both of those solutions, unless you have a sufficiently high player count, neither are viable because they split up lobbies too much.

For me personally, I've never looked at Terraria as a game where I play on public servers, since that ruins what makes the game fun for me. I will absolutely do a playthrough of the game with friends in a private server, since that means we get to share the experience of exploring the world and getting new items, but a public server where everything is either pre-built or already destroyed takes that away. Yes, you could say the same thing with Minecraft, but that game was built more with a creative focus than an explorative one, with mods being the only way for me to get a kick out of exploring the world and finding loot.

On Classic Capture the Flag I'd agree with you on the inherent weirdness of invincibility frames and melee detection but it's the opposite perspective given in that terragrim example - any melee weapon that has a decent arc (even a platinum broadsword) and knockback can do a weird stunlock of the character - where doing the same swing, you hit your opponent multiple times while knocking them back - sort of carrying them through the air. The best example is the fiery greatsword which is so damn powerful in this gamemode though that comes with the skill ceiling. I've at the very least decent - I kill either a biome boss, skeletron or queen bee before time runs out because it's fairly easy when boss health isnt affected by player count (and the gamemode is on classic so it's easy to navigate the world). You can fairly easily get to a stage when you have a grappling hook (the best mobility item - bypass knockback), a movement accessory to help and melee weapon (the crimtane or demonite hammer is actually better for this 'stunlock' of hit detection on opponents than the sword but for other metals sword is dominate). Though, at that level the equivalent ranger weapon is fairly powerful though the grappling hook allows one to abuse the stunlock to the utmost. I'm not sure if some meddling with invincibility frames should be applied here - its a mid-high level strat, tending on the high level as it's best used when you have the best material - hellstone (or I hear in some rare cases hallowed bars). There are greater problems attached though they tend to skill level (jungle is pretty much better than snow/dungeon) & dependency on rng for team to win - it can be infuriating to be sacked with a hard to traverse evil biome preventing you from exploring beyond or getting nothing useful from chests.

What kind of reasoning is this? Like terraria being fun causes their servers to be dead? And are you suggesting that minecraft by itself is not fun? Maybe not for you if you have tried minecraft and didn't enjoy it, but there are tons of unmodded minecraft multiplayer servers that are fun, which shows that many people have fun without the addition of mobs. Both games are fun without mods and also fun with mods, but I don't think mods really affect how fun servers are. There are tons of minecraft servers that are still popular and remain fun without mods such as hypixel and hoplite.

> "you know what else relogic gave us? commands." No. This is Tshock. The only advanced server manager for Terraria. It's super arbitrary and nowhere near as advanced as Minecraft's. Tshock is also what requires you to make an account for every server in order to play. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because Terraria doesn't have a UUID system (like minecraft)? But then that would require you to make a "Terraria account" and Relogic would have to manage servers of said accounts. Tshock is also in like disarray or something. Their website's gone and the plugin store too. All that's left is their github repository and a new manual they're working on.

Terraria does have a uuid system, but sadly somewhat useless due to a malicious player can easily change theirs which brings a lot of other problems such as uuid grabbing, ban evasions, and empty uuid's. Leafos Gaming has been around quite some time and I can only attest 2 things here, DDoS attacks using an advance client that also allows spamming slots and hogging them up to prevent new real players from joining. This is because unfortunately there is not proper authentication system in place for Terraria to assert that it is a human player or a fake login. Secondly, Terraria community base is dying a s a whole due to various communities blackwalling each other over "religious" beliefs. Not to be confused with actual religion, just terraria religion, such as who is the best server, we don't support pirated server that allow pirated copies joining or downloading, and modded servers that shouldn't exist because owners have done questionable things without proof. All in all, its just other games are becoming more interesting than others...Palworld, for example. Terraria just can't keep up with cooking new ideas or mechanics anymore, and Re-Logic is probably sitting on prepping for either Terraria 2 sequel, or a whole new game as a whole. In any case, love to see Leafos reach top 10 again, but we got knocked down to 40, so I can say its just time to throw down the towel soon. But for those looking for survival as close to vanilla as possible, Leafos does it and I still wish all others servers the best of luck in their feature presentation. www.leafosgaming.com/ Even Teeria Legends (I worked with them) made its name for what it did before Pedguin snatched up its player bases, and that is all thinks to the shady inner workings of Pryaxis and owner who blackmailed users and owners of servers for false wrong doings. Only those in power have power now, and they have coders who can do more than the average joe. Corruption exists everywhere sadly, and only way is to let it die, which is where we are now.

I always found multiplayer terraria servers charming between a few friends, but I feel like those multiplayer servers become depressing when you look back at them and they’re empty. It seemed to me like terraria was never in a format that supported multiplayer capability like Minecraft did. For one, because it’s a left, right, up, and down-only game, with PVP on it was almost a guarantee that you’d hit whichever player you passed if you were swinging your weapon and passing by somebody on terraria, whereas on Minecraft you had to be more deliberate. The limited world sizes and amount of resources also didn’t support a full servers worth of people in terraria, seeing as most of us playing single player also eventually want to switch worlds to enjoy something new or grab more resources we’re struggling to find in one. If there was a super massive world size exclusive to multiplayer or if a player was only allowed to make one super massive world that could be used for single player or multiplayer, this might clear up a lot of issues for people. 🤷‍♂️

I would say the problem isn't terraria's multiplayer servers in of itself, it's more like that Terraria is already such a fun Solo and Co-op experience that there was never a need for a dedicated server to exist. Minecraft is more of a survival sandbox experience, living life, building villager cities, trading, making your world more personalized, that kind of stuff. Meanwhile, terraria has a dedicated progression-based adventure for its players to sink their teeth into, they don't need to have a dedicated server with unique gamemodes and experiences because the solo and co-op experience already provides everything they'd ever want for the game.

I think a main component is that, quite frankly, Terraria was made with only a few players in mind. Terraria has microscopic worlds compared to Minecraft, meaning things like SMPs (What I imagine to be one of the largest cintributers to Minecraft's huge multiplayer playerbase) just can't be ported over to Terraria the same, and no amount of game changes can fix that by the very nature of Terraria. Survival servers will always devolve into whats seen in the video because of the size

Honestly the only reason I don't play Penguin Games anymore is BECAUSE of the low player count. I had a lot of fun playing CtG, Class Wars and Spleef when the server was super active- I would log in every day and just have the drive to keep playing and getting better and better, because it really is fun to get better at these modes. I would see the results of my efforts in getting more Penguin Points the better I performed (which admittedly don't give great rewards but it's good as a symbol of progression and status at least) and it was honestly addicting. I didn't quit playing because I got naturally bored of the gamemodes or whatever, I WANTED to keep playing, but the player counts got lower and lower until the server wasn't active enough to consistently play my favorite gamemodes every day. And playing so consistently is what made them so addicting. So I kinda just had to quit because what was I gonna do? Spend most of my day either waiting for players to join so I can get to play a few matches with the absolute bare minimum amount of players needed for one to start, which wasn't that fun? My hand was kinda forced. I would go back to playing these gamemodes as they are now if the server became super active again, but that's not going to happen just because I wish it would. So change is necessary. The server needs to attract an audience. It needs big flashy gamemodes that are great for making youtube videos. Sponsor youtubers to make those videos if necessary. Terraria is more limited than Minecraft but making great gamemodes and server systems is not impossible, it's just harder, and it seems like the devs are demotivated. Unfortunately I cannot just tell them to be motivated. They don't have a great reason to be, tbh. But I think an attempt could be made and perhaps it COULD succeed.

terraria survival on public servers will always be messed up as long as there is no limit to what people can do. Here are a couple problems with easy solutions that are harsh but quick. 1: no hard mode. If a new player spawns in with nothing but copper tools they will struggle to do anything, or when hardmode hits any new players get end of pre-hard mode gear. 2 No bombs destruction or drill containment unit. This would slow the destruction of the entire world and is not such a bad limiter. if you want to mine out a section for a farm get some people to help you!. 3 limit progression. this one is harder to explain, basically have servers where after a certain amount of time another boss/event becomes available for everyone to mess with. lets say week 1 has king slime, eye, goblins, and eater/brain. week 2 queen bee, deer clops, skeletron, old ones army, and wall of flesh. So on and so forth. This would allow people to not progress to far apart from each other. Then have resets once the world dies down after wall of flesh and have the world download available for a bit incase people want it!

Just want you to know, Pedguin's server is the ONLY server that is minigame-based. Almost every other server is based around building, PvP, and communal stuff with way less shenanigans. Also, yes, Relogic has not supported dedicated servers and that has led to a lot of the problems you describe. A lot of what server devs can do is limited by the lack of updates to server functionality. I would say almost none of these problems are on the devs of the servers actually. As for reading the signs, they actually are easy to read if you've played on any server before. It's basically just like the Hypixel menus where if you've never played Hypixel the menu is awful. Honestly, never seen a dedicated server with good menus in any game lol. Would be interesting to see custom menu implementation.

Second - You can log in with an existing character. I know that this barely sounds like a issues for "games" servers, but that's how the online community starts in games like these. I still remember playing older times playing on Minecraft servers - most of them were for simple survival and progression with lots of other players. That was hella fun. And that was how it started and progressed from there. There's no progression like this, casual gameplay like this in terraria to kickstart the online scene. And I doubt there will be, actually, since Terraria and Minecraft are extremely different.

It used to be bustling at all times way back when! In addition, I feel like there used to be significantly more building-centric and general hangout type Terraria servers than there are now, as well. Minigame servers are awesome, but they used to not be the only thing on offer on the Terraria server browser! And that's not a criticism of the servers that do minigames, it's mostly just an observation. I used to hang out on Terraria servers a lot around the 1.2.4-1.3 days, and while they never did Minecraft server numbers, they felt more active than Terraria servers generally are these days, and had more variety in what they offered. People would just come around to goof off and chat, and make builds together. It was a lot of fun, but I honestly have no clue how you would even go about bringing that kind of community back.

A lot of these suggestions just sound like ways for horrible P2W to creep into servers. If you want pay-to-win that bad, just play Minecraft. Minecraft servers are basically unplayable without feeling like you're playing a cashgrab mobile game.

Hello there! I'm a solo server dev and the amount of work-a rounds we need to do is a bit crazy. Since we are already very limited to what we can do due to Terraria as a game mainly being client sided. Which means that for any future terraria server devs you are already starting of with a kick to the chin due to how easy it is to use a client or mod in servers. So the incentive/traction for new devs to start or help existing servers will be low to begin with due to how painful it is to run a server initially with little to no anti-cheat. Which results in a lot of restrictions to new players more than often to mitigate potential damages to a survival run which in it self will push away a lot of players, but this usually isn't a issue with older servers since they probably have developed a form of anti-cheat to combat client mods but usually affect the regular player in some way in return. All this could be fixed if re-logic gave us more tools and more control over the client, but sadly it isn't as simple as that. It's just sad since Ive seen so many servers try to run but end up disappearing in a month or two, and i believe its due to a underlying issue with cheaters making it impossible for new devs to keep pushing since they end up realizing how big of a task is to prevent cheaters in the first place. Some of the servers that are up either have a anti-cheat that hurts the regular player as well or doesn't exist at all and they just live without one other than the stuff developed by tshock. (i cant thank tshock devs enough for doing so much for the server community) (tldr, it's tough already to get started as a tserver dev due to the amount of control the client has and essentially discourages a ton of future devs. caused due to client abuse and how big of task it is to develop a proper anti-cheat with the limited tool set we have.)

Part of the issue with PVP games is the Terraria (Or steam) servers are really unstable even for just couple players. Unless you wanna host a port forward.

I just don't like competition in games in general. people take it too seriously when it's just a game so it ends up being ruined. that's why I never play servers
