Why Tesla CEO Elon Musk Made a Surprise Visit to China

Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk made an unannounced trip to China on Sunday and met with Premier Li Qiang. Musk is said to be seeking approval for driver-assistance software that could help stop the carmaker’s revenue slide. Stephen Engle reports on Bloomberg Television.

Yes. It is great deal for China. In 2019 they get Musk to hand them over blueprints for 'Gigafactory' which Tesla spent decades getting operational and is what really gave Tesla competitive edge. In 2019 China starts copying it en masse. Chinese manufacturers didn't have to go through all the risk Tesla did nor search for funding because Chinese government pays for it all. China now makes more EV's thanks to Tesla, and it is why Tesla is in the bind it is in now instead of sitting on top of the car market. Now that he is in a pinch, Musk needs his as yet pretty unsafe self-driving cars to gain traction. Areas that value life don't allow this yet. China approves it so Musk gets to stay afloat another year or two, but same as 2019 he has to give all the IP he has spent decades on self-driving he just hands over to China. Within a few months and at almost no cost Byd and Xiaomi will magically come up with software that is 'surprisingly similar' Then Musk will have nothing more to offer China so Tesla can go under 🤣🤣😂😂 Well played by China

I've seen BYD and other Chinese EVs up close. Good (not great) fit & finish but they look/feel like ICE cars with a battery. Poorly laid out wiring, no frunk, 5-10 behind Tesla in technology. They will beat most traditional OEMs, but not Tesla. The Chinese govt knows this... and is playing nice for a number of self-serving reasons. The Chinese public knows this too. Wouldn't be surprised if BYD eventually installs Tesla FSD.
