Why The 1982-1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Was A Genuine Performance Car

My dad had been a car salesman at Chevrolet during that time for many years. He was a true car guy, with a reputation for knowing his stuff. Always making sure the buyer knew what options where possible, and sometimes "tricks" that made for some unique vehicles, even units that were not sold special orders. Most car enthusiasts have looked at a build or window sticker during the days of manual ordering and seen say a $34 posi option, or the equivalent not "checked off"??? yet stripes and a spoiler??? He made sure that did not happen. Anyway, regarding the late 83-84 Z-28, he said a large metro dealer had one about 100 miles away and he asked me if I wanted to go with him to get it, a dealer trade thing. Not something he normally did himself. I got my DL at 15 so I was 15 or 16, and was like "Duu" of course! I think we took a "loaded" Camaro Berlinetta. We picked up a Blk/Blk 84 Camaro Z-28 H.O. 5 speed. He not only let me drive, he told me your driving right from the dealership like it was not big deal. (It really was not back then, kid or not I had a DL). But to me, the city, the dealership, the car, it was all a BIG deal. He did say this car belongs to the dealership, the car we brought was "sold". The car was quick, light, handled great, and looked sharp. During this time period I was able to experience at least riding in some of the coolest new and used vehicles as my dad would often bring them home. More of a fond personal memory than auto related.

@@johneldorado Thanks, and you would have I"m sure. I have another cool story, one that had to be told as I was only 2 years old, So it is 1969 a normal weekend at my grandparents 30 miles from town. I climb up on my Grandfathers 8N Ford tractor, the seat was just not enough, I had to put all hands and feet on the steering wheel rocking back and forth while my mom came running off the porch but I fell off and hit my head on the way down.I would be fine it was just my head🤣. Now the cool part, my Dad''s newest demo, one he ordered as his to drive was 'just' a 69 Z-28 RS Black W/ hounds tooth and every option but vinyl top. factory chambered exhaust, dealer installed headers, 3.73 instead of standard 4.11 gears. Although it did not get the cross-ram. He had actually ordered Black stripes(on a black car) hoping to get a unique black on black, or maybe the stripes left off? But in production it defaulted to White stripes. Oh well, if you didn't try you definitely wouldn't get it. Anyway that ride to the ER was quite a rapid trip I was told. (I actually had a child seat back then, who knew?) Of course past a toddler it was no seat belts, riding in the back of the truck, all the stuff of the times. Thanks for listening.

I bought a 1984 Z-28 HO with 5-speed used and I drove it daily for 5 years. I drove it for a year before a mechanic informed me the rear brakes were locked up and not working. I hadn’t noticed! So I bought a shop manual and I replaced the entire braking system that had become corroded. Man what a job that was for so many reasons, not the least of which was the mechanical screw parking brake that ran through the rear disc calipers!!! I also learned the master cylinder was from a corvette. When I was done I replaced various bushings, bearings, steering and suspension parts until it drove like new. It steered like a slot car and cornered like it was glued down until you tapped on the gas a bit too hard then it got tail happy. I lived in the Mid-West so each winter I loaded bags of rock totaling 500 lbs in the foot wells throughout the cabin and over the rear axel and drove it successfully in the snow! When the snow began to blow in on me through the T-tops I got brave and took them apart to fix them! My shop manual was dog eared and greasy by the time I sold it to a high school kid who got it painted and finished my project. I saw it driving around town a few times before I moved out of state. That L69 HO 305 was a game changer for performance in the Z-2/8. The only thing it took a while to come out with a decent set of performance cylinder heads for it, and people keep trying to swap a 350 style cam (112/114 LCA) which hurt performance in the 305. My drug dealing roommate had one of these in the DC suburbs, I wanted these z-2/8 while in high school and college.

My girlfriend bought a 1983 Z28 back in 1989. It was fast, fun to drive, fun drifting in the snow, a pleasure to drive at high speeds on long distance road trips & it handled like it was on rails.

Yeah that TPI at the end of the 3rd gen was a huge improvement over the misfire injection. I have an LT1, and even though it's still quick enough in traffic, I remember how insane it was when it came out. It was awesome growing up when muscle cars were becoming great again 😅

I had an ‘82 Z28 with the LM -1 150 hp V-8. It was a dog, but it definitely was good for getting girls! The interior was garbage. Door handles pulled out of the door, and many squeaks and rattles.

I was a Ford guy, I even owned a 1970 Boss 302 from 72-74, but I admired that Chevrolet never stopped producing the Z-28. Chevy was consistent and produced performance versions of almost every model of their cars. I had difficulty getting Boss 302 parts from the Ford dealer even though the car was out of production a couple of years

Here on release day! Thanks for highlighting these cars. Spent some time in an 84 z28 with the 5 speed and high output 190hp mill. On the highway, it showed no signs of running out of breath well past the 85mph speedo. Fun car but everything rattled like crazy.

@@Joesmusclecargarage I have a '69 Z/28 with all the factory Stage 2 goodies. Fast even by today's standards. No A/C (great in Texas), no power before 4000 rpm. Before the upgraded cooling she overheated. Great for ripping through the Texas Hill Country or on a track but not for much else. My '65 GTO is slow AF but a whole lot easier to daily.

I still own my 1984 HO my daughter who was 10 years old at the time. Went with me on the road test. She had the seat reclined all the way back looking up through the T-roof. She said I hope you get this car Dad. The rest is history it needs restoration my daughter Michelle passed away back in 2019. I want to begin work on it soon before I'm to old to do anything. Back in the early '90s, I had just made my final payment on a Mazda 323 sedan I had gotten from a friend of mine who owned a used car dealership. "Hey, come here.." he says, and takes me around to the back lot, where his mechanic was selling his personal '85 T-Top IROC. Bought it on sight...Man, could that sucker get up and go! Loved that car. Years later bought a 95, which was also a going machine. You could pretty much take any corner at any speed, the thing handled so well. I'd buy another Camaro from either of those eras in a heartbeat

I grew up in the 80's and loved these. My 1st car in 1988 was going to be an '84 Trans Am 5-speed with the L69. We had put a $500 deposit down on it but the next day the guy's neighbor guilted him into selling to him, and we were refunded the money. I ended up with a higher mileage '85 Trans Am with the auto trans and TPI motor. Just as powerful, but less fun without the stick. To this day I dream about that L69 car. The Z-28's as well. It was a fun time to be alive as it had indeed been a long wait for modern, fun performance cars to return.

In 1987, i was 14,not driving age yet but me and the boys liked the look of the IROC. Anyways, its 4th of july and we are going to the town park for the fireworks. Traffic is parked roadside for 2 miles ,so youre walkin to the site. As we were boppin along , up ahead was a yellow IROC parking on the side. My mother had an 84 Z28 5 liter HO, auto trans, black on black with the factory louvers over the hatch window. Fun car. First and second gear could get up and go making it a fun stop light to stop light car (1/8th mile), but the jump to 3rd was too great and it took a bit to get back into the power band again. I'd smoke it with my 69 El Camino in the 1/4 mile as I'd be hitting power in second gear when it lugged out shifting to third and leave it behind. But get past that dead spot and with a little running room- I was clocked topped out at about 130-135 mph with 72 Vette by my side. Or so said the Vette, the dang Camaro speedo only went to 85.

In the 90s I had an 84 5spd w/ a short shifter, 305HO all the pollution equipment removed, no cat with a Gale Banks exhaust, 4:11 gears, and Herb Adams beefy sway bars with beefy struts. It held its own and then some. It would out corner a Corvette. Full G on skidpad.

I had a new 1984 Z/28 with the L69 5 spd.. It had every option but the gaudy Recaro interior and an automatic transmission. I blew the motor (outside of Iowa City) within 8 months. But GM rebuilt it for me even though the car was just past the factory warranty maximum mileage (which was nice of them). Great car. Thanks for this video. ☮

When it came to handling, the Camaro was leagues above the Mustang, but the advantage would quickly change when it came to straight-line acceleration, where the Mustang prevailed

A friend's father bought an '83 HO version new. Sounded great, and was very fun to drive... when it ran. It was, unfortunately, a piece of junk. One synchro broke into pieces. My friend was driving it one night (fortunately on a side street) when the passenger axle shaft broke, and the wheel/etc came flying off.

I wanted one of those so bad back in the day. I ended up with a Cavalier instead. The Cavalier was an excellent car, though. Had one clutch replaced and kept it 150,000 miles and ran perfect when I sold it 10 years later just because I didn't need an extra car. Got another Cavalier (1993) to replace the '84 and it was equally as good.

I had a 1984 Z28, with the 5.0 liter HO. I took the emissions control pump belt off of it, and it would spin the tires in 2 and 3 gear, even though it was an automatic. By taking the smog control pump belt off of it, it gave the car at least 50 more HP!!!

My uncle had a 1983 Z28. Despite looking very cool,at least to me at 13, it performed like a frikken brick. Couldnt even get out of its own way in an inch of snow or even a light drizzle. That rear end would just spin right out. He had it until 87 when he bought a Mercedes sedan that smoked that Z28 in every way.

My best friend had a 1988 IROC-Z with the 350 TPI engine. Great car. But I still preferred my 78 base Camaro with the 250 straight 6. The lighter engine was amazing in the curves. And who doesn't love the sound of an inline 6?😮

My friend had the very first L69 Z28 in Canada. It was not available here at first. I worked for a Chevrolet dealership and had a contact in Seattle and got all the L69 part numbers. The Dealer he ordered the car from then did the conversion to an L69.

I'm surprised that the drag coefficcient was as high as 0.37. I got to drive quite a few of these Camaros working at a Chevy Cadillac dealership. The quality was a bit spotty, but not as bad as the Monte Carlo SSs. Surprisingly, the quality on the Cavalier Z24 was better. And the Mustang was that much better. But the Camaro was much cooler looking and felt cooler being lower to the ground. Corvettes were of course the best of all. Still love the super clean lines of the C4 over the C3 and later Corvettes. Many people, even from that time, don't get how earth shattering it was. An amazing design and such a leap forward technology wise, and of course performance wise. The handling was amazing at the time and still holds up today on smooth roads.

Growing up as a teen in the mid late 80's I remember these cars. The LG4 cars were a joke and had that reputation. The Crossfire cars the same but unreliable. The good ones were the L69 3:73 geard cars as well as the 85 up LB9 and L98 cars.

They were of decent build quality, but certainly not great, especially the body. Door handles were poorly designed, made of pot metal, prone to breakage, and would easily freeze up in cold weather. Overall fit and finish wasn’t anything spectacular, either. I was a mechanic back in those times, and most GM products kept us busy. Interior plastics were prone to fading and cracking, and the HVAC systems were poorly designed. Good looking car, and that’s about all it had going for it, from the mechanic’s point of view.

I worked at a Pontiac/Buick/ Chevrolet dealer in 1987, and the cars produced during that time period had the worst build quality of any cars produced in the U.S. at any other time in history!!!!!!! The build quality was absolutely horrendously bad!!!!!! I constantly saw cars with a 3/8th inch gap between the one side of the hood and fender, while on the other side, the hood and fender had a 1/8th inch gap! Body moldings and stripes down the sides of the car, not only did not line up, but often were literally 1/2 inch higher or lower on one panel than on the other!! Also, I saw paint jobs that were pathetic beyond belief!

The five liter "H.O." came into being because Dodge ran an ad that showed their Charger 2.2 was quicker 0-60 than both the Z28 and the Mustang (with it's 5.0 2bbl carb). Ford's response was to put a Holley carburetor on an aluminum intake and factory headers and true dual exhaust. That first year third gen was one weak car. Good aero and a great chassis and suspension was a solid foundation, but those cars were slugs. If only the L-82 would have been an option, that third gen would have been a absolute legend.

I love these cars, I have a 1990 Trans Am GTA and I can confidently say the 3rd generation Firebirds and Camaros were are still are my favorite generation of F-bodys! The 5-speed manual really brought out the performance in these cars, the automatics felt like dogs. If you test-drove a 1983 Camaro Z28 with the cross-fire and the 5-speed, I bet it would feel faster than a later model IROC-Z.

These things were rattletraps. I knew it back in the 1980's when I drove an '85 Scirocco Turbo. I had a flight instructor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University who had one, and he even told me it was a rattletrap when it was a year old. He went on to fly F-18's in the Navy, and his brother in law is Bruce Springsteen.

I've said it for years that the 3rd generation cars don't get the love they deserve. I currently own an 82 Z28 pace car and an 87 firebird formula. The Camaro is a crossfire auto and the firebird is an LG4 auto

My car for my Junior/Senior year of Hi Skool 1983-84 was a copper colored tan interior 1978 Ttop Z28 350 4bbl auto & I dated a chic not long after that had a red '88 Ttop IROC-Z 350 TPI! I liked the '80s Z28s but I was more into the Trans Ams having had a new 1985 Bandit II Edition & an '88 GTA ✌💖☮

lol my friends dad bought a brand new z28 in 83. It was slow but it chirped 2nd every time. It felt like it had a shift kit in it

78-81 z28’s were they best looking cars of the era save for tge 77-81 trans am. 82’s we’re ok, but didn’t do much for me til the irocs were introduced

I just had the sport coupe, not the Z28. I did add a salvaged Z28 hood. It was just a great bodystyle car.

before i even watch this video,the title made me laugh. my First job working in a real shop was for a guy who Specialized in Upgrading these camaros for Brand new owners Without voiding their warranties. these things were Slugs until you swapped in a 350. if you remember Jaspers,they made a crapload of money selling those crate engines.

I remember a guy who had bought an ‘82 Z28, he wasn’t happy with all the plastic inside. He shifted into reverse on the highway and pretty much destroyed it. 🤪 Took the insurance money and bought a truck, which lasted longer. I thought they were okay.

All the videos on 3rd gens seem to mention the good braking of the Camaro's. The fact is that the Camaro's with the drum rear brakes had the exact same brakes as the 4-cylinder S-10 and GM G-body cars. In other words, the brakes were garbage. Rear disc helped a little, but these cars were not known for their good braking.
