You completely skipped over another huge risk/cost of keeping them online. Cybersecurity regulations have fines for non-compliance. Regulations like GDPR, PCI-DSS, and others in multiple countries and the industry itself have ruinous fines for non-compliance, especially when handling sensitive data like financial and medical data. They're turning off the payment processors (not the content download servers) like they did for Wii/DSi when GDPR took effect. Redownloads on Wii/DSi still are available. The cost of non-compliance can be equivalent to billions of US Dollars, per regulation/country. Updating to be compliant requires updating the consoles, not just the servers, and can be more expensive than the store continues to generate revenue, or can be impossible if the client hardware can't run compliant software and protocols. Not complying is even more expensive, to the point it could end a business. That Twitter thread you quoted kind of hinted at that. Many countries around the world have recently enacted cybersecurity data regulations and put pressure on companies to comply. The regulations have increasing requirements every year to counter vulnerabilities that have been found, or increased computing power weakening old encryption standards.
@VideoGameStoryTime Жыл бұрын
That's an excellent point.
@bungiefan Жыл бұрын
@@VideoGameStoryTime Also, it isn't just the cost of updating the servers/clients. It's all the staff tied to the cybersecurity operations, including technical legal staff that can match regulations to technical measures that meet the legal requirements. You also need people that can audit the compliance is actually there. So, programmers/engineers to implement the updates, legal staff that can tell the programmers/engineers what is required in proper technical terms, and auditors that can validate it all. That's millions of dollars a year in salary. An old console shop may not generate that. So operating in compliance costs you a lot, operating in non-compliance costs even more (possibly even the company), and shutting down doesn't cost you anything. There's other hidden costs as well, like the cost of employees to negotiate new distribution licenses for the eshop with each publisher/developer, many of which were probably near expiration and thus further incentive to close the shop. There's a lot of nuance to this that contributes to the decision, and businesses make decisions based on incentives and disincentives that don't match what influence us as individuals.

What I don't get is why not keep it as is, where you can only purchase by redeeming a gift card on the website? This is what Sony has done with their legacy stores.
@bungiefan Жыл бұрын
@@dapperfan44 Sony isn't necessarily keeping those up either. You can't buy psp games anymore to put on a psp. Ps3 and vita are gradually losing access to account functions on the systems and their stores are likely still approaching shutdown. Nnid wasn't made to be long term, Nintendo account may be, but 3ds can't use Nintendo account, and security concerns may end up getting nnid shut down later. As I said, there are a lot of less visible factors behind these decisions. One is renewing distribution licenses. Negotiating that takes time and money. If they don't renew, they have to delist the software for new purchase, ala Scott pilgrim versus the world for ps3 or Deadpool on pc and ps3. There's a lot of contracts and such that we don't get to see that influence the decisions.
@dapperfan44 Жыл бұрын
@Jeffrey McDonald Hold on, that isn't true. You can in fact still buy PSP games. For example, you can still buy Crash Tag Team Racing which will only work on a PSP. You can also buy games like Super Stardust Portable, and if you buy it on a PS3 or Vita you will be able to play it on PSP, Vita, PS4 and PS5. You can still purchase and install PS1 Classics and PSP Minis to a PSP as well. However, you must connect the device to the internet to download the games, which is tedious in the PSP's case since it can't connect to modern Wi-Fi security standards. Sorry about the knee-jerk response before finishing reading but I had to make sure that misconception was corrected. P.S. the PSP store was closed in 2016, but there was no outcry about it because the games could still be purchased on the website until late 2020. (Most people preferred using the website for purchases anyway, because it was a smoother experience and it was easier to buy games for multiple consoles at a time.) After that the only option became to purchase them on PS3 or Vita. Recently, the service that was terminated was being able to buy microtransactions in PSP games, back in 2021. This is often misreported as shutting down the ability to purchase PSP games, as "closing the PSP store" when the PSP store had already been closed. That is likely where you got that misconception from.

The new systems also can't play the software from the old ones without baking on the old hardware. 3ds has dsi and gba circuitry in it. Ds had gba circuitry. Gba had gbc circuitry. Wiiu had wii and GameCube circuitry. Emulation generally can't handle the previous 1 or 2 generations on the newer hardware. Leaving in the old circuitry leaves in some security vulnerabilities. Pc is the only platform that is very backwards compatible, and emulation adds compatibility, but Nintendo has been very resistant to the idea of accessible emulation. Alsp, the way 3ds is set up, with encryption keys even Nintendo doesn't know, and direct eshop access by the console needed to generate a unique ticket to the encrypted nand storage, means a pc or switch can't generate the data for the 3ds to be able to install the game. Unencrypted data on the sd card isn't accepted, and a matching ticket needs to be in nand. Your 3ds encryption key isn't known without hacking the console, and changes with a reformat. The security on the console prevents another console from making valid data.

In the end, for me personally, I see them closing the shops, as promoting emulation. Instead of closing shops without any efforts to preserve, their library. They could make a console that plays their dead consoles games, where they sell old original titles, as physical copies. Instead they choose to not do anything about original game preservation, and just straight up close shops.

Speaking as a programmer, It does seem Nintendo should focus on a modular approach to the way the shop works, and they build the shop architecture to support multiple consoles, with filters that will only show compatible games on each console. The code to run the console could be abstracted away behind certain functions, leaving the shop interactivity behind certain functions that are used across all consoles. Therefore any updates to the shop design could be changed in one location using the abstraction and universally updated on each console.

The problem with digital storefronts on consoles is that consoles themselves refresh every 5-7 years, introducing a whole new generation. Once the install base of the new console gen is big enough, active userbase of its predecessor diminishes, and so the online service and the storefront get shut down. This is not a problem on PC with stuff like Steam and Epic Games, although they are just as prone to shutting down as their console counterparts. Because PCs don't refresh every 5-7 years and the hardware is constantly upgrading, so you can simply replace a part or two to extend your PC's life. Steam is still active after 20+ years and I can still buy games released years ago. And it seems Xbox is trying to do something similar to that with backwards compatibility.
@bungiefan Жыл бұрын
Xbox has managed to be like Steam in this regard. Xbox 360 games can still be bought on the Xbox store. Xbox 360 was also PowerPC-based and Xbox One/Series is x64-based. The store works on a similar design to Steam's. The difference is Microsoft and Valve had a long time working on PC and with internet before console companies did, to be familiar with the changing security scene and that the governments come in and regulate when there are failures in security. Nintendo especially likes to ignore industry best-practice and roll their own solution a few times until they find something else that works or they fail at it enough times, and they chose to do so with their online store and other online setup, when cybersecurity regulations were becoming stronger. That's not really a field you can go all wild west on your own solutions. PC is also backwards compatible in hardware back to like 1970s CPUs. that's got some downsides, like CPU efficiency and heat issues.
@Ghost101 Жыл бұрын
With PC, only certain games are prone to be de-listed from the store due to a licensing problem. It's stupid, but it has happened before. Some games eventually come back while some never came back at all to this day.

The pc os refresh cycle is about 5 years as well. Look at xp to Vista to 7 to 8 to 10 to 11. New os means new hardware requirements and new protocols like new directx versions. You do have to refresh the hardware, because mobo and cpu set your spec ceiling, and replacing those is essentially a new pc. 7 couldn't run games needing newer directx for 10, xp couldn't run games for 7

@@bungiefan While new versions of Windows come every 5-7 years, you don't necessarily have to upgrade as soon as the new one comes out, or even a year or two after. I had Windows 7 throughout most of the 2010s and newer games ran just fine. It wasn't too long ago that I upgraded to Windows 10, which came out in 2015. Windows 11 came out late 2021, but I ain't upgrading to that one anytime soon, as 10 is still very much relevant. And a lot of people are still using 10. Hell, there are some folks who still use Windows 7. Also, when there's a console gen refresh, developers make games exclusively for the new console. This is not so much the case when a new version of Windows comes out. The only time that is required is when the previous version gets too old. Windows 11 is out, yet there are no PC games that require it or even recommend it. Whereas some next gen games require a Series S/X or a PS5 instead of an Xbox One or PS4. I've got a little story to tell you. In 2007, Microsoft actually tried to make the PC port of Halo 2 exclusive to Windows Vista, but PC gamers found a way not to upgrade to the new OS. People managed to play it on Windows XP with some workaround. So the PC "refresh" you're talking about is nothing like the refreshes that actually happen on consoles.

@@AllieRX GameCube games still came out for a while after wii came out. Ps4 games have been coming out after ps5 did. Ps2 had games up through 2014 when ps3 came out in 2006. Wii had games up to 2019, while wiiu was out in 2012. Console generations tend to overlap at least a year or two, usually longer. It takes a while for people to migrate to a new console, just like to a new version of windows. Good luck making windows 7 install on new hardware that doesn't have drivers for it. I couldn't install win98 on a pentium 4 build in 2005, it couldn't handle the hardware it was faced with. Support for old hardware and operating systems dies, regardless of platform. Pc and console are the same in this. Pc just has more backwards compatibility due to the nature of how windows and the pc cpus have built up extensions and functions on top of old ones over the years. Pc also embraced emulation and virtualization earlier.

Sort of, but also the cost/risk of keeping the shop running versus the revenue it generates is way lopsided now, away from profit for Nintendo. 6:14 You are mixing things up at this point. Miyamoto only explains the incompatibility between platforms. But this is no reason for replacing the whole eShop system. This is only the reason why software for one machine cannot be executed on another. Nonetheless the server side can still be the same. For example, Steam works since its launch. But it supports multiple platforms as Mac OS, Linux and Windows versions of games are supplied by the same servers even so the target operation systems are incompatible with each other. This is something that can be hidden by the shop system. Nintendo seems to have an issue with avoiding legacy here with their accounts. The best approach would have been to provide a Nintendo account since the launch of the Wii. But no, unlike the PS3 they went the way of using the Wii System ID as an account id. They fixed this with the Wii U and the 3DS but we still had to migrate to another account as the Switch needed another one. This becomes tedious and is not necessary when comparing this with other console manufacturers.

As cloud infrastructure gains popularity the excuse of maintaining old servers is going to go out the window. As these services will allow scaling either enormously large or as small as needed. At the end of the day, Nintendo certainly could host all their 3ds, Wii, and Wii U VC files on switch's eShop. Yes it would be an effort on their end to put out a firmware patch to Wii, Wii U, and DS systems. But it's not like they couldn't do it if they wanted to. Hosting the VC on Switch's eShop would have one storefront, one set of code to maintain, one place to ensure all ecommerce related security issues are patched, but as we already know, Nintendo wants to squeeze as much money out of its fanbase as possible and try to get them on NSO, even though NSO is lacking many of the games from the VC.

It isn't just new servers. The client side console software has to be updated, and you've got much lower resource availability (cpu and ram) to handle updated encryption protocols and such. That's the bottleneck in compliance. Also, new servers wouldn't just be an easy thing. It isn't just the hardware. It is the security design of the server software, which still has to speak a language the console can understand. The foundations of the design themselves are flawed in light of newer security standards. It's why windows xp, Vista, 7, or 8 aren't updated anymore, and got replaced by things on newer foundations. Older hardware can't run nswer operating systems and you eventually need a new pc, same as a new console.

I remember watching a video reviewing Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, and at the end of the video the reviewer said something along the lines of "Please stop releasing 3DS Games." The 3DS, and Wii U, practically died in 2016 and was put into the ground by 2017 when the Switch launched. I think Nintendo knows that when they announce a new console, the old console becomes pretty much obsoleted in the public eye. And also, these virtual shops, are mostly for the Nintendo fans. Especially the Virtual Console. The Virtual Console was doomed to fail, since only enthusiasts and nostalgic people would buy old games. Newer and casual players would probably never even dream about buying 20 to 30 year old games. Personally I believe many Nintendo fans are under the impression, that they are the majority of the player base. I have reason to believe otherwise. I think the Causal Consumer, the people who will buy less then say 5 games total for a system, are the majority. I believe that's why Nintendo Switch Online is marketed primarily as an online service, that one could use to play with your friends, and not a way to play older games. I think if it was presented as a way to play older games via subscription, the amount of people who subscribed to NSO would be a lot smaller. The Expansion Pass is that idea of playing older games via subscription, but the main selling point of Base NSO is playing online with friends

At least virtual console gave me the ability to purchase the games separate. They mostly just needed to lower prices from games from the NES up till the N64 and implament transferable purchases. Switch Online is an awful replacement (doesn't help it's the only LEGAL one at that). Retro games and subscription services that don't give you the option for individual purchases really don't work together. Not to mention Nintendo has become even less caring to preserve their old games; especially if the fiasco surrounding the Mario 3D Collection is anything to indicate. No to mention that expansion pack is overpriced to oblivion. Also, Nintendo still showed the 3DS some support in 2017.
