Spot on, lots of guys are over-gunned with fly rod weights. Reminds me of the never ending "which rifle cartridge is best" debate. The 9' 5wt is the .30-06, hard to argue that it's the best all around 1 rod solution...that said, how many of us have ONLY 1 rod? 4 wts, and even 3 wts have plenty of horsepower to tame any 24" trout that has ever lived, just like a .257 or .243 cal bullet is more than adequate for every deer that's ever lived. As is the case in almost all gear related topics...it's the Indian, not the arrow.

Here in Norway, the 4wt have become the new "5wt" for most trout anglers. 5wt have actually become sort of the 0-spot. A lot of dedicaded anglers often have two applications, a 4wt for allround dry fly, and a 6wt og 7wt for streamer fishing. I started with trout fishing, but the chase after atlantic salmon caught me, and I was drown to the whole world og speyrods and shooting head. Then I had to sell some of the trout rods to afford new spey tackle, and I discovered that the only rod I used for trout was the 4wt, the 3wt and 5wt was never in use. So I keept my 4wt, and when fishing trout I really don't feel that I miss out on anything.... you can land huge fish, and you never snap any leader!

The 4wt is my go to rod for many of the small streams I fly fish in Pennsylvania. Since I mostly fish dry flies (on a nearby stream I haven't used a nymph in years) I most often use rods from 7'3" to 8'. Some of the reason is the width of streams and trees. I do have some 3 weights as well, but fish them much less often than the 4 weights. Fly fishing for bass, salt water, or big trout waters, I do use longer and heavier weight fly rods.

I fished all day yesterday with a 9wt. I intended to fish streamers on the big river in the morning and midges on the smaller river afternoon. I brought both a 9wt and a 5wt. My buddy brought his nephew and I lent him my 5wt. He caught a ton of fish! Trying to indicator nymph with size 20 zebra midges on a 9wt was a really good lesson on why line weight matters! I caught about 6 fish for 100 takes! Not the best ratio, but still one of the best days of fishing I've had. Watching an 11 year old kid catch between 20 and 30 fish on a rod I lent him was pretty cool. His uncle probably landed more than him, which is a big plus considering he had planned to share his rod all day. I had fun in the morning fishing streamers on the big river even though we didn't find fish. It was good scouting for later in the spring. Having the easiest most productive wild trout stream on earth to fish in the afternoon is always a plus. I'm researching 3-4wt rods for small streams, do you have any thoughts or recommendations?

@TwigNTimberFishingOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesmccreery250 I prefer 2 handers to switch unless you bought one rod to try and do it all. A switch rod is a "jack of all trades, master of none" and casts a little less specifically than a dedicated rig

I love love love my 4wt for the majority of my trout fishing. I primarily fish smaller rivers and streams here in western NC. I’ve been able to throw everything from dries, dry dropper, and indicator rigs with no issues. Hell, I’ve even thrown smaller streamers for smallies and it worked amazingly. I don’t even own a 5wt anymore just because I never used the darn thing

This argument makes sense in norther cold water trout fishing but In southern warm waters, four weight rods are generally too small for big fish and too big for little fish species. In southern warm waters, don't bother with the 4wt unless you want to target panfish exclusively. Even still, while panfishing in the south, you run the very real risk of tying into a big largemouth, peacock, catfish, bowfin, or gar which will turn your four piece 4wt rod into a five piece or snap your spider thread tippet. A 5wt will give you a lot more "luck" bringing a biggish bass to hand. In reality, even a 5wt is walking the tight rope because they just can't sling the larger flies used for warm water predators any reasonable distance compared to trout fishing with smallish flies. Most southern boys swing 6wt on up. I have a 4wt rod which I like a lot but it only comes out of the tube when I travel into cooler country. Just some food for thought before you bring the wrong tool for the job where warm water behemoths dwell. Fish on!

I’m no expert by any means, but I had a carbon 5wt as my first and only rod for many years so I then bought a glass 3wt for stream trout. Really only chose 3wt because I thought the difference between 4 and 5 wouldn’t be noticeable.

MIssing a REALLY important caveat...4weight is the best of TNT's location BUT maybe not your location. Not good for the western waters bigger 20+ inch trout or most nymphing rigs....5wt all around still reigns. 4 wt is okay for nymphing, awesome for dries. Majority of the Western water fishing season is nymphing which requires WEIGHT to get down in the water column...

@wschield6087 ай бұрын
This gentleman obviously loves his 4 wt and it’s not something that can be argued as it is one man’s opinion but please don’t regret your decision. The 9’ 5wt is an excellent choice! It was my first rod and the 7 1/2’ 3wt was my second. Later this year I’m hoping to add a 9’ 7wt to round out my lineup. The 5wt will cover most of the bases plus give you a solid foundation for what you get down the road. Enjoy it!

The 5wt is fine. I have been fly fishing since 1974 when 6wts were the norm. We caught plenty of fish. To this day I live near and fish the Beaverkill, Delaware, West Branch of the D etc. You cant go wrong with a 5wt. And, in the wind you will be happier that you had a 5 wt over the 4wt.

@TwigNTimberFishingOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I find no different in applicable casting distance when actually fishing to stream fish. I do notice however that ot is easier to get a soft presentation on the 4wt than a 5, albeit marginal. It may be a little better to cast in the wind w a 5 but again, marginal. I favor the pros a 4wt gives me to those of a 5wt (in eastern waters that is)!

@@TwigNTimberFishingOutdoors so hard to choose. I'm on the coast in Nova Scotia it gets super windy. But i do also find that if the presentation is poor. The fish around her won't bite a thing 😠 better buy both i guess lol

Can you fish streamers with a 4wt
@TwigNTimberFishingOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
I find it depends on the rod. A fast 4wt can toss smaller streamers. But willl probably not be ideal for that 2/0 bass fly haha
@padronianful3 жыл бұрын
I use a 9' 4wt almost exlusively to fish streamers up to size 1. A stiff 4 with a heavy line like an OPST commando has ZERO issue turning over some pretty nasty flies.
@ericnortan90122 жыл бұрын
@@padronianful I have a 4wt, fast action with 3ips full sink. Works great for most trout streamers. I fish #1 and smaller streamers on it, depending on the weight. We have some good size browns and rainbows it handles them great. When I'm going for bass, pike, GL steelhead or salmon (coho and atlantic) I use an 8wt. I use a 9wt for kings. Some of the rivers I fish have migratory rainbows from inland lakes, basically steelhead. Usually they don't get as big as the ones from the big lakes but 6 pounders are not uncommon, even bigger. I haven't caught one that big on my 4wt, but fish those waters with it and am confident it would do the job. I have caught a few decent sized fish with it and have a good Idea of it's capabilities. And it's light. I vote a 4wt is a great size rod for streamers on smaller rivers.👍
