My OCD kicked in and I am trying another cartridge. This is how you can use statistics to convince yourself to try that new-improved mouse trap! UPDATE... The 6.5 PRC was stolen in the mail... first time that happened so that's the end of this series. I had to send it away for warranty repair (feeding) and it never made it back home.

great point about field position, once a season i find myself needing to shoot at angles I've never practiced or thought of

I’ve been in the 6.5 camp for a long time so my darling is still the Swede version. I’m not interested in the extreme ranges you mention and I don’t need an ultra light rifle so my dependable FN’98 with a 1-8” match barrel in a McMillan Edge lightweight stock is my do everything rifle. It’s almost like cheating. When I’m feeling nostalgic I’ll carry a .32 special, .33 Winchester or a .348 and when I desire more punch I’ll reach for my .300 H&H but MY rifle is the custom Swede.

I also have a 6.5 x 55 Swede and I like it very much. I am also fond of older stuff. Lever guns, single shots loaded with paper patched bullets, single action revolvers and flintlocks are a real good time.

My upgrade was getting proper fitting left hand bolt rifles and better optics and new rangefinder. I'm happy with an 270win and 30-06. Perhaps one of the best upgrades I did was aquire really good rifle shooting slings and picked up the practice of field positional shooting.

550+ Yards is actually a long, long way in the real world. The 30-06/270 are still very capable!

Interesting video. Thanks. I bounce around from my 243 etronx to my 338 ultra mag, but always seem to come back to the tika 300 win mag.

I've had a .264 Win Mag since it was offered in a Rem 700 classic rifle in the 80's. I've always loved it, it can reach out a lot farther than I can. Very comparable to the 6.5 PRC or 6.5mm Rem Mag. Lots of case capacity but long action and that belted case of course. Maybe it's just me but I've always felt it with 140 grain bullets it kicked a lot harder than a .30/06 not less. Same with the 7mm rem mag, feels just like the .264 win mag to me and both those two much sharper recoil than the .30/06's I've shot, more like a .300 win mag. Maybe it's in my head or maybe I haven't shot the heavy bullets in the .30's.

My 7mm has a brake so I can't say. It's possible the recoil energy is delivered more quickly in the 7 Rem Mag or 264 than in the 30-06. The 6PRC has less powder capacity than the 264 so kicks a bit less. Truth to tell my 6 pound 13 OZ 30-06 (all in) has always been very easy to shoot.

I personally find my model 70 in 264 win mag shooting 140 gr bullets to have noticeably less recoil than any 30-06 or 7mm rem mag I have ever shot. I was actually surprised to hear you say the opposite. Perhaps its a fit difference? I have always liked the fit of the model 70 for me. I'm interested in playing with some of the newer 6.5 bullets in a PRC eventually.

If you haven't checked out the 6.8 Western yet but to me that hits the sweet spot better than a 6.5 PRC when you look at animals bigger than caribou. There are more high b.c. bullets coming out now for the fast twist 277's now. It's bison legal here in BC with 175's. Looking forward to seeing your new 6.5 PRC when it comes, I'm going to guess it's a Tikka!

The 6.8 Western is the superior round but hard to find and I am afraid it might not make it. My rifle is a Nosler 21. They had trouble with feeding when they first came out in the PRC but this ones is supposed to be good (checked by the dealer) Shilen barrel..ought to be a sweet shooter.

@@north61 I saw those listed at eastern Alberta's favorite fun store, they sure do look like a well made rifle! Now there are even high b.c. 150's coming out that would be perfect for the 6.5 PRC. I'm going all in on rebarreling LH Tikka in 6.8 Western, worst case scenario is getting it reamed out to 270 WSM later or just resizing any of the other WSM cases down to the 6.8. I hear you on the longevity of it but it's just too good not to try.

When you love guns and your wife asks you which gun is your favorite, always reply: “the NEXT one”. She won’t ask again and she definitely won’t ask which your favorite wife is!

My wife is definitely not a gun person. But, I love it when she asked me gun questions. Last year she asked me what type of gun would I like to have that I don’t have. My reply was an over under shotgun. So that year she bought me a Browning Citori over and under 12 gauge, just because I didn’t have one. I have the best wife ever!

Would you use ELDM for hunting? My next rifle will be 7x65r with a fast twist barrel!! It will be around 7-7.5lbs…. 170gn bullets going 2600+ fps should make for a good all around mountain rifle for up here!!
@north61

Guy from New Zealand who has shot hundreds of animals past 400 yards uses the ELDM as it opens up reliably at slow speeds. I'll test it myself.

@@davidgendron1953 At close range on light animals you place the bullet in the boiler room and it absolutely crushes the lungs. It worked with my 6.5 Rem Mag back in the day with light for caliber sierra's. A whole whack of absolutely devastating 1 shot kills. If you hit shoulder bone it upsets the plan... so the Nosler 140 Partition is loaded first up. At 0-300 yards shoots to the same spot.

Nice, I have a 6.5 swede in a tikka; I'm thinking of getting an after-market 6.5x284 barrel for it. With that said, I hear the 6.5x55 Ackley improved is as good as the 6.5 PRC mind giving your options? I'm also thinking of a 300 prc. If so, what twist would you suggest for 208-250 grain bullets?
@north61
@north61 2 жыл бұрын
1-9" for the 300 PRC You will be short a lot of capacity in the 6.5x55 improved. Good cartridge in a long action but I don't think you will get to 6.5 PRC land.

I have a weatherby vanguard in 6.5-300 wby and the recoil is not much, shooting only the 127 Barnes lrx has great accuracy and just fits well. Shooting this projectile with factory ammo at 3500 I believe, only a hunting gun so the barrel don’t get shot out, recoil is maybe like a 7rem mag
