Even Capcom themselves were surprised that this series took off in the West. They had to make like four more shipments worth of copies for the first one. I think the reason why AA and Danganronpa proved popular is that, unlike most visual novels, they have actual gameplay elements to them.

What I find so interesting about Rise from the Ashes as a case is that, while it is set between games, you can *really* tell that the writers for it were way more experienced at writing cases. You can do this just by comparing it to the other cases in the first game. It's not that those cases were bad or anything, but over the years of writing the trilogy, you can really tell that they honed their craft. Rise from the Ashes is the first 3-day trial that actually feels like it *needs* to be a 3-day trial. After the first game, the writers didn't make any other three-day trials. This is because the 3rd investigation day tended to be rather perfunctory. By that point, you know who the killer is and probably have a good idea of how to prove it, so the only thing you're doing is filling in a few blanks. RftA avoids this problem cleverly. Because it's not 1 3-day trial; it's *three* one-day trials. The first trial is the trial of what happened in the parking lot. The second day is what happened in the evidence room. And the third day is what *really* happened in SL-9. It's extremely clever and engaging, as you're frequently investigating new areas and crime scenes. But ultimately, the game ties them all together at the end. You can also tell that the writers of RftA struggled a bit with not having the Magatama as a mechanic. As a game design tool, Magatama interactions were used to structure your discussions and investigations. When you found someone with a lock that couldn't be broken, the game was able to prompt you as to where you might need to investigate further. This replaced some of the fetch quests in the first game, and it was a very welcome mechanic. But RftA didn't have that mechanic. So the third investigation day involves a lot of lengthy conversations and exposition dumps that are important and essential, but they don't involve much interaction. It's just people talking at you until they run out of dialog. It works, but it feels... off. And you can really tell the developers wanted that final conversation with Lana to be a Magatama thing very badly.

Awesome to see coverage of one of my favorite gaming trilogies from one of my favorite channels. Funny enough you pointed out the issues with how the legal system works in the series when it's legit based on how the Japanese legal system does indeed work (to an extent). Yep the odds are severely stacked against defense attorneys, the prosecution works with the police investigation, and a guilty verdict is more likely than not. It's extremely common for Japanese prosecutors to have a perfect or near perfect record. The series was partially meant to be a criticism of how messed up the justice system is over there.

Justice For All´s finale is to this day my favorite case. It just had everything I loved in the series. For Trials and Tribulations, I can see why it is so beloved, but remember hating the ending, making Godot look like an idiot for having Misty Fey die. I just thought that was the most avoidable death ever as a kid.
@thunderphoenix256 Жыл бұрын
Well, it IS an avoidable death, but that’s an intentional bit of writing. Godot’s entire plan was enacted not just out of a selfless desire to protect Maya, but out of a misguided attempt to escape his self-loathing by making up for what he perceived as a failure on his part to protect Mia. Godot isn’t an idiot, he’s a man with a savior complex processing his grief in an unhealthy manner. He himself admits that he should’ve handled things better and gotten help from someone else like Phoenix, instead of trying to be the hero and solving everything by himself. Misty’s death WAS completely pointless in the end, happening due to Godot’s actions as a tragic villain, and that intentionally adds to the tragedy of the entire case.
@marts4169 Жыл бұрын
@@thunderphoenix256 Nicely said. What bothers me is that Godot didn´t even consider simply talking to Pearl, instead going right away with the convoluted plan of forcing Misty out of hiding, trying to distract Pearl and when that failed have Misty channel Dahlia herself. Simply telling Pearl "please be nice and don´t channel this one murderous psychopath for Maya´s sake" might have been worth a try. I know she was a child and under instructions from her mother to do so, but I also remember her being smart and very loyal to Maya, so it was always jarring to me that an option of just explaining the situation to her was never presented in the story. It made Pearl look less like a sentient being and more like a ticking timebomb. Now that I think of it, I actually don´t remember how stabbing Misty even solved the situation. Sure, it was to save Mays, but wasn´t Dahlia then just set free to be channeled by someone else? Couldn´t the grown man just apprehend and incapacitate this vengeful university student? What also bothers me is that Godot then tried to hide this act and not take responsibility for the outcome of his plan right away, all in some sick pursuit of testing Wright.

Thank you so much for perfectly summing up what makes this series such a great experience, I hope you cover the Apollo Justice trilogy and the Ace Attorney investigations duology in the future. FYI, The AAI games focus on Edgeworth except his role is more like a detective investigating the crime, so don't expect any trials, but you still interrogate a lot of witnesses, including the true culprit of every case, which pretty similar to the trial sections of classic AA, and investigation sections, instead of being point and click, now have you moving Edgeworth and his partner around the crime scene and inspecting every suspicious nook and cranny. The 2nd AAI game is Japan exclusive tho, so you would have to play the pretty faithful fan translation instead But the AAI duology is definitely worth it IMO, Id really like to hear your thoughts on it.

I'm guessing why so many people turned against Turnabout Big Top is that the localization team didn't adjust Regina's age to a legal marriage age, which IIRC would have zero impact in the case overall. Her character being a sheltered happy-go-lucky girl would still make sense even if she's aged up to let's say, 20. Yes, 16 is the legal marriage age for women in Japan, I'm not here to argue for or against that fact but this is an issue of cultural difference and players enforcing their ideals on a game. It's somewhat comparable to a previously mentioned example as to why Franziska can crack her whip inside the courtroom as she wishes, because within the game it makes sense. The game originally was set in Japan, where Regina would pass as a valid marriage candidate (although being the bare minimum age is still creepy but not outright criminal). When the game is localized and the setting is retconned to take place in L.A., they should adjust her age for the case to make sense, much like keeping Adriana Andrews' name androgynous to fit the case.

As someone who could only play JFA first and couldn't touch any other AA games until muuuuch later, I haven't seen a lot of problems with Turnabout Big Top. Sure, I could tell it was filler, and back then I wasn't too bothered in checking people's ages, I've never ticked about Regina's age, and as you mentionned, Phoenix never commented on that. But I didn't find this case to be "bad" by any means - The last two cases introduced me to how goofy and un-serious the characters were that, when I arrived at the circus, I wasn't surprised they tuned it up to 11... or maybe I was just that oblivious to the side gags. Farewell, My Turnabout gave me a lot of trouble. I could tell something was wrong when I had to corner Andrews. I usually took pleasure in finding contradictions, but this time, what rewarded me for my logic was a breakdown. The kind of breakdown I've done a lot as a kid when I was blamed for something I didn't do. That was the moment I realized "Oh shit. This game got too serious too fast." That said, catching Engarde was cathartic, especially with the cold line Edgeworth gave him after I pleaded "Not Guilty". On a side note, if you were playing with an "Infinite Health" cheat, these 100% penalities will still give you a Game Over, since there is no redirection to the question you just failed.

15:54 I love this case, mainly because I love the pre-fnaf style camera sequences with the blue badger and the bad guy (Damon Gant, chief of the police). his animation when he gets caught was wicked

Seriously between This and Ghost Trick Takumi-san is a Great Storyteller and a trailblazer for playable visual novel awareness to the mainstream also thanks to the DS and 3DS now almost all on Steam with the Apollo Justice Trilogy on the way Thank You Capcom for giving him the chance on this entirely unique set of IPs and let them come to the US I would love to see the story of Takumi-san's pitch of the AA series to Capcom btw Dalia is The Ultimate THOT or at least up there with one of the most manipulative women in gaming and Gumshoe and Gadot both will always be BASED

Still on the 1st one, but as soon as started playing, I've gotten hooked. This game is so fun. Yes, level 1 and 2 the intros tell you who the killer is, but after that no. Then it's a mystery to you who the killer is also. It gets alot harder and complicated with the 3rd level.

Ace Attorney c: Thank you for this video analysis!! I've been really into the Ace Attorney series lately and I enjoy your style of video essays quite a bit (I owe to you the fact that Sonic has been on my mind lately, haha). If you want to talk about any other Ace Attorney games, I'd be more than happy to listen!

I started playing it this year it is fun it is 8/10 for me I have some problems like Mia in some cases just tells you what to do and spoils the excitement and fun 2-sometimes it is just too specific like you need to use certain evidence against specific sentence logically it can be used on deferent sentences but it only work on one 3-pressing on witness there is no consequences on doing it so you do it all the time and see if something sticks 4-you cant lose cases (if you can lose and there is a short cutscene or something you will feel more pressure to win) and this will make the game more fun

I've always liked Rise from the Ashes, it's a great case and super satisfying to solve. But it's true that it's too damn long, the first time it's amazing, but whenever I replay the trilogy every couple of years to refresh my memory, I kinda dread the arrival of that chapter. But then you solve it again and it feels gooood.

13:53 This is unique to the Western release btw. In Japan the name of the case is “Turnabout Reborn” (“Yomigaeru Gyakuten”, which is also the DS port/remake’s subtitle)

The ending painting suggests that Godot was finally able to stay with Mia, in the other world, in which he passed away shortly after the case. That hits me the most after story. Damn love this game and can't wait for the next trilogy in 2024!

While I don't play visual novels, this was an interesting video J. Didn't think you'd cover something like this. I've heard about Ace Attorney, but I didn't know the main games were this good, based on how you described them. They got my respect now. Hey, do you think you can cover a series from Bandai Namco sometime?

4:41 The reason to why they eager to testify, it's a Japanese one, you see in Japan, if you are call to court to testify and refuse it's seen almost as bad as a crime, so seeing as this are Japanese games, they are more written with this in mind, as such the reason to why they are eager it's to not call attention. Even more, if they have positive image, they would think they have more edge because of how the Japanese system works (At less at the time, i don't know if this has changed)

I love this series to death and like many others, it's how I got into other visual novels like Danganronpa and Professor Layton. (Naturally, the crossover was the first Layton game I played.) Really hope you do the rest of the series, in part because you need to experience it yourself and in part because everything outside the original trilogy needs more love. The Apollo Justice trilogy in particular is criminally underrated and if you're willing to give Turnabout Big Top of all things a fair shake, then it deserves some better coverage. By the way, that nitpick about traveling around locations is actually fixed in later games. I don't remember when the shift happened exactly, but I know The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles at least does have all the locations available at once.
