In my opinion, America is still one of best places in the world to live, even when compared to other 1st world countries like those in Europe, the US has higher salaries and lower taxes. There are millions of migrants coming in, and few Americans leaving. If America was so bad, it would be the other way around. If you were born outside of the US, you'd likely be lusting after the American dream, like many do. In fact, in the country I was born, taxes are 2x higher, homicide rate is 3x higher, yet the salaries are *5x lower.* I get tired of hearing people say how awful they have it when they have no idea what awful is. The reality is that social media has led them to believe that they have it bad while also leading them to believe in some idealized past that didn't exist. So, I would say the American dream is very much alive.

Single? Work online or retired? Want a nice $200 a month fully-furnished, 1 bedroom apartment with free water and Internet? Cheap $1 taxi to get you around a very walkable small city with very friendly people. I’m living like that in Cambodia. The US dollar is used here every day and English is spoken. Beer is $1 in restaurants. What’s not to love? The US is NOT the best place to live.

This hits close to home for me. After losing my first career and seeing 'just how valuable of an employee I was after great sacrifice for nothing', living hand to mouth, listening to what my culture told be "work hard, go to school and be rewarded' and living in this ultra-competitive highly individualistic society, I left America for Japan for a total of 4 years. I knew society and economic systems were screwed up; after living in Japan and its different culture, I was forever changed, for the better! I now say that the "American Dream is just good marketing to sell you a false sense of self at your own expense." Thank you Austin!

Lancaster, PA has priced out the locals, due to greed, so that mostly folks from higher cost of living states, are able to comfortably live here. The high cost of housing, taxes, fuel, food, etc. makes any pay raise a joke… even when not eating out, paying for entertainment, or have no children. The cost of houses or rent is so unreasonable and just greedy.

One thing you said that young people do not have is a home. We cannot afford a house. Its easy to have a garden when you have a home but when you rent you don't own anything so you cannot grow your own food. It still makes more sense for younger people to leave that has nothing and start a life overseas.

How long before expats out stay their welcome? When wealthy Californians started moving to Texas and paying top dollar for housing, the cost of living for native Texans became unaffordable. It didn't take long... Moving to countries with a lower cost of living may have been a great idea a few years ago, but the huge increase in expats is now affecting the cost of living of the host countries. Recently Mexico has started deporting Americans. How long before these countries start enacting laws and taxes to benefit from the "rich foreigners?"

There is no American dream. I own a pretty large gym. And I live in an extremely small trashy apartment. That I can barely afford. Day-by-day. I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to afford my groceries. This should not be the type of life that Americans are living that are from here that are apparently supposed to have some grand life.. Especially since COVID, I've seen that people have become more tense and we have all become shorter financially and emotionally. I do travel quite regularly to other countries. In all honesty, the one reason I do is because I cannot afford hotels in America. I recently got back from Ecuador and they have homes there for $20000. I don't talk to my neighbors here in Arizona. So why the hell would I care? If I don't fit in, I never have and to me that's one of the main allewars of moving away. If I don't fit in here and you say I don't fit in there. Then why don't I live where I have a financially happier life? Anybody that hasn't traveled out there. You must get on it soon. You must go see the world for all its beauty and all its grandeur. America is extremely overrated. Don't give me wrong. I love many things about this country. But the fact that I can't go on the grocery store and get a basket full of groceries. Anymore is a horrible thing. I am on the road to saving to live in a country other that is sad. That so many americans want to leave but I completely understand why

When I think about moving abroad for a lower cost of living, I sometimes realize it would be a form of my own personal colonialism, and I get a sense of guilt that I would be using that country for my own selfish purposes. If it's just about the money, it's selfish and exploitative. It has to be about something greater than that, like wanting to be a part of that culture or escaping to a country that better matches my values. In that case it would be worth it to live in a more expensive country. So I use that as a reality check: Would I move that to country if it were more expensive? If not, then I would be moving there for the wrong reason.

I get how the phenomenon of migration flows from developed to developing countries can have a negative impact on said developing countries. However, such migration flows have been relatively small in terms of raw numbers. Much larger have been the migration flows from developing countries to developed countries since the end of WWII. Developing country to developed country migration has had a truly profound impact on the developed host countries in terms of cultural assimilation or lack thereof, downward pressures on wages esp. for the most vulnerable developed host country citizen, and upward pressures on housing prices for all (some of the very factors that are causing people from developed countries to move to developing countries). I think that your omission of the impacts of developing to developed country migration, which always has been and continues to be much larger than the other way around, simply reflects the stranglehold that left of center thinking has on what content creators feel that they can and cannot say on social media. I mean a content creator pretty much has to have political YT channel to even broach the topic of negative ramifications of developing to developed migration has on the host country but no problem with the other way around. Despite the fact that our PC rulers tells us that we cannot discuss it, the fact that we do not suggests clear bias.

I don't see the possibility of being able to live in a cheap country while remote working for a wealthy one with a first world compensation is sustainable long term. I also don't see high first world wages sustainable long term for activities that can be performed remotely. You already use call centers in India and large business will wake up and stop hiring expensive Americans and Europeans since there's many qualified professionals overseas that might not be as cheap as a semi slave call center operator but will surely be much cheaper (and much easier to fire). I don't think that's a bad thing either, to be honest. Rich countries are facing a shortage of local labor. We need more people doing work in the physical world. If that's already a problem with too many people holding college degrees looking for office jobs instead of working on trades or high skilled activities in high demand areas like care/health imagine with people that don't even want to show up at the office a few hours per week, at least, in person. Yes, you might even outperform a local worker, but so can foreign workers, which couldn't compete due to restrictions surrounding visa issuance. Once you remove that barrier by using remote work you will gradually lose your leverage and the gap between you and the rest of the world will become much smaller (for activities that can be performed remotely or where there's too many workers available as we have to admit it's much easier to push some paperwork around than fix plumbing).

Here is my 2 cents on the topic. Young people leave developed countries because of the internet and because it’s totally normal for a young adult to want to see the world. I am now 61 yo, I am retired, I visited many countries but I haven’t found a better place to live than where I’ve lived all my life and that is Canada. I know there are comparable countries where the quality of life is similar. The internet makes it so much easier to travel, find a place to stay, work abroad, etc. One thing is certain however, most developed countries have become expensive places to live, especially real estate is expensive. I enjoyed every country I have visited and in many cases, local people were living a good life. However, it is delusional to think that life is better somewhere else. Why did over 1 million young people migrated to Canada from poorer countries every year for the past several years? To have a better life I suppose? Also, one must never compare a salary of $40,000 in America and what you can buy in Costa Rica with that kind of money. The average net salary in Atlanta, Georgia is $5,800 per month whereas it is $880 per month in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica!!!

How do you think that people in rich countries have felt since the massive influx of people from poor countries into rich countries began after WWII. Many of them have been low skilled, have not assimilated, have driven down wages and driven up house prices. Also the numbers of people going from poor to rich countries have always been and still are much larger. And given the fact that these people are poor, they are much more likely to need to depend on the state for assistance. Whereas a six figure digital nomad living in Thailand does not.

@@plainvanillaguy I don't see how the immigration of poor people would cause housing prices to go up. If anything, their cheap labor reduces the overall cost of living. People with money are who make housing prices go up, along with contractors who won't build homes if they don't make a lot of money off of them from rich buyers. The only way America is going to beat a demographic death spiral as we baby boomers die off is to increase immigration, not fight it. Thank goodness for immigration! Everything you're saying basically proves that we shouldn't be calling "developed" "developed" anymore. Literally all of the problems you are numbering are problems most of the "third world" (another term I think is super outdated) has had for 100 years already. The lack of affordability, the crime, the stress, the having to work yourselves to death. You remove the advantage of the dollar and earn the same as a local for the same job and you'll see how North Americans and Western Europeans are starting to live similar to how people in developping (I mean second tiers, not like Burundi in Africa, I mean your Brazils and your Mexicos of the world) have been living for the past 100 years already.

The American Dream still exists to some extent. We lead the world (and growing) in advanced semiconductor technology and software. It is not advisable to move offshore, where you are not a citizen and have secondary rights to citizens. Your ability to create income is severely limited. You will need to learn another language. Services operate at 50% of USA efficiency. It is no panacea. My sons lives and works in Santa Barbara, CA. He is a tech worker in his younger 30's. He is in the California state income tax bracket at 9.3%. He has a job offer in Seattle. Washington has 0 state income tax, and housing costs about 25% less than Santa Barbara. Yes, remote jobs help, but not nearly everyone can get one of these fully remote jobs. Austin can speak of this phenomenon because he has a job that is essentially totally remote. As technology increases, so does the expectations to utilize technologies to produce more work in the same amout of time. Jobs now involve competing more tasks and more different tasks than before. The pay is not magified by the same proportion of increased productivity, but the profits are realized for the company owners and shareholders. Workers are against each other. Fellow citizens are against each other because of greed and lack of economic security. Stress really does shorten your life. I'm so glad I don't live in the US anymore.

Good video but the reality is most jobs in the US are now hybrid and some are 5 days per week. Lot of companies are laying off remote workers so this may not be possible. The only true way to become a nomad is go into freelance where you are the boss and do anything you want. Remote jobs are getting harder and harder to find and I'm sure corporations want to make sure they have control over you. One way to do that is kill remote work so you cannot escape. Also lot of digital nomads are making roughly 20k to 25k per year which is still great for overseas and very few make over 50k or more.

In the end, I would be afraid to give up my American birth rights. I am striving to live on less and become simple. Hi Austin, I enjoyed watching this video. However, there’s a few points you touched I believe aren’t quite right. You mention the fact that you’d struggle with the culture of the host country and wouldn’t fit in. This is true for migrants all over the world. Yet, people live and thrive in different countries with completely different cultures. Your view is a very US centric, you probably think your country is the best place in the world, which it isn’t. I am not trying to put you down Austin, but as a migrant myself living in London. I am South American, I can tell you, there isn’t such a thing as gentrification in our countries. Rich people live in rich neighbourhoods and poor people live in poor neighbourhoods. As a foreigner most people would be able to afford more than the local people, so basically, they wouldn’t be able to experience what local people would have to, such as no access to vehicles, reduced public transport links and more importantly living in segregated communities. Unfortunately, you Americans are too full of yourselves and think the world revolve around you. I have lived in England for nearly 20 years, sure I miss my country, but I am not depressed, nor do I dismiss the good things living in this country has brought to my life.

Taught English abroad in China and the benefits were exactly what you said. But another big negative factor you could add to this video is that was 10 years ago and my friends are still there because they can't come back to America since they didn't develop any skills to make above $30,000. Socially it's difficult to move back with your parents after you were so important and respected in another country, to be just a peon at home in America

The threshold is set for each tax year and is a little over $100k. Therefore, you won't have any additional tax liability for earnings under the limit for the tax year. However, you should always check the IRS site to confirm what applies to your individual situation. Hope this helps.

I think the American dream only existed for a very short time: from 1946 to 1971. At that time, a man could feed his family from one salary. At work, there wasn't that much of a difference between productivity and wage. There were still normal pension plans available then. House prices were not so far removed from the average salary as they are today. America has become a dystopia. And anyone who wants cheaper health care, cheaper housing, job support, will be accused of being a communist. In Europe, these are basic things, that's exactly why they pay the tax. And that doesn't make Europeans communists.

I am ben living in the US for 40 years integrate in the american culture And i find out were the American dream slogan came from . From the old timers or the old guys 80 and 90 years older. The old thing begins on the end of 1940 1949 and the idea was to show the american people that came out ww2 lots of families lost there sons and husband and american need it a gold something to believe on So Hollywood build a small town to perfection with beautiful homes and yards and amazing streets and they calll it THE AMERICAN DREAM they use this place to make movies and television shows true the 50 and 60 like happy days and lot more showing the perfect America but only in that small town in Hollywood some of famous people stay there during filming . So the slogan got real popular and it was use on tv adds build board for 20 years or more the american dream was on the mind of every Americans trying to forget the war. So that was it that was how you got a country to became the richest in the world true the industrial revolution. After 1960 the 1970 bring the binging of the end of that era and the american investors and entrepreneurs begin to take factories aout of the US looking for cheaper labor and no taxes on manufacturing and you know the rest you are living it . The never was the american dream not for the majority of Americans only the idea based on fantasies. Is time past that fantasies got far and far away to rich for the majority of Americans and today 2024 well you know

So -- in the end - cultural norms wins ? --- Maybe -- maybe not for everybody ? ----- Also - many in California - have transplanted to many other states and cities - driving up prices and displacing locals. -?- In fact - the wealthy have often done that within the state (?) - in certain desirable cities or areas ! - - - Perhaps it is better for some & not so for others ? Simply meaning - just get established - somewhere - that you really like - as opposed to slow traveling continually ? Perhaps citizenship ? Or repeat in only a few highly desirable places as often as possible - establishing local connections for routine repeat visits ? - - - There are 'many' ways to possibly pre establish a desired eventual retirement destination (?) if you plan for it wisely ? (for example) --- In short - it can become ''your dream" for your customized future -?- which could include yearly visits to friends and/or family in your home country ?

some are adopting a frugal lifestyle, others have an opulent life. At the end, we all want an opulent life, live with like-minded people and with the best possible weather. That's the new dream all around the world, not just in US

American digital Nomads should change themselves. Study thoroughly the local cultures and being respectful!!! Learning their languages and being humble and genuine without the economical colonizer mind!!

Even though you have to adjust to other cultures it could allow you to see the world from a from point of view. In America you only see the American way of life and work

Most Americans have little to no clue of the world. Watch the news there and it's clear. It's very isolated from a global perspective

The frugalist should go to somewhere safer- I feel Canada is not safe anymore and my social insecurity hinder me from any types of spending-My biggest spending is rental 800$ ,gas each month just 30-40$. Even i only get 2400$ a month i live the lowest spend but god i cook myself and hardly use car i still have to spend 1600 or more for everthing(i only buy discount food and each month is 400). I bought my shitbox Toyota corolla for 2000$ 2 years ago. It helped me save 1200$ on relocation. Shitbox is good investment especially when it comes to Toyota and Honda. I might leave Canada in the future but remote job also doesn't mean the best choice.......The best choice might be to improve yourself and always be patient and vigilant. And always concern about the safety because your health is your most valuable asset.... And should always learn the language where you want to spend your rest of your life well before decide to go there. And study the local cultures and local laws very well!!!!!!! It's not easy. And alienation is a constant issue and many other problems too!!!!

If you cant make it in a so called rich country, how do you expect to make it in a so called poor country where there are more people competing for a lot less resources.

I agree with all of this. But, aren't developing countries dangerous for those of us who have resources, or are perceived to live well in another country, without working?
